letter from Tressa Spears Jackson The statistics are astonishing. More women die of heart disease each year than from every other type of cancer combined. The crux of heart disease, however, is that the killer isn’t as easy to recognize. Most women don’t even know they’re having a heart attack, which is why heart disease is often referred to as being a silent killer. We all have someone in our lives who has been affected by heart disease. But despite the amount of education we receive, many of us still think it won’t ever happen to us. The truth is it can. That’s what makes A Modern Tea so important. And that’s why we’re bringing back the tea stronger than ever after a brief, one-year hiatus. The 2013 tea promises to be our best yet. Our theme – The Year Red Goes Green – signifies a rebirth of sorts, a new beginning. The event will have a new, fresh, organic vibe, all while incorporating many of the great features that keep our loyal guests returning year after year. We’re offering a few new workshops and other features that are highlighted throughout this book. We’re even mixing up the format in 2013 to promote more mingling among our guests. Because as you know, knowledge is power. So please, share your story with friends, both new and old. Let’s put an end to this silence. Our lives are in our hands. We can help prevent heart disease from claiming ourselves, our family, our friends and neighbors by sharing the truth. Together, we can be the difference between life and death.

CHNCT Foundation created A Modern Tea in 2006 as a way to raise heart health awareness among women, although men are welcome and encouraged to attend. The event was inspired by the American Heart Association’s “Go Red for Women” movement. Go Red helps millions of women understand that while heart disease is the number one killer of women, it is largely preventable and there are simple steps women can take to lower their risk.
As part of the campaign, women learn how to love their hearts. They also receive lifesaving information about how to prevent heart disease and manage risk factors, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, weight and cholesterol. By featuring the various elements that can contribute to healthy lifestyles - thus healthy hearts - A Modern Tea is able to support the Go Red movement. This is done by convincing participants that informing women about heart disease and its triggers are crucial to the health of our communities.

Tea Tasting
Green Tea Many teas like green, black and oolong are rich in polyphenols, which is a type of antioxidant. In this tea tasting session, you will learn about the detoxifying effects of antioxidants and how they protect cells from free radicals, which helps prevent blood clots, atherosclerosis and certain types of cancers.
Come take a tea journey at one of our signature workshops, Tea Tasting with Harney & Sons Fine Teas. Harney & Son’s Fine Teas are world renowned tea experts, who have been selling gourmet teas for over 25 years. They have tea shops in Millerton, NY and New York City. Today’s Tea Tasting Workshop will take place from 1:30 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. in the Main Ballroom. This tea tasting is great for all levels of tea enthusiasts. During the workshop, several varieties of teas will be prepared for tasting and may include white, green, oolong, black or rooibos. As the tea is served, Harney & Sons Fine Teas will discuss where the teas come from, how they are processed, and the health benefits of each tea. Brewing details will also be discussed including how long to steep the tea and optimal water temperature for the best tasting.
Stop by the Heart Boutique to purchase your favorite Harney & Son’s Fine Teas product or visit them on the web at www.harney.com.
