Perspectivesfrom the Executive Director March-April 2015 Sustaining a world-class orchestra in Cleveland requires that we continually push to adapt and transform ourselves without compromising artistic standards. In recent seasons, we have added new programming adventures including Fridays@7, ballet performances, film presentations, and innovative operatic experiences like last season’s Cunning Little Vixen. We have boldly sought out — and successfully brought in — tens of thousands of young people each year, proving that a great orchestra appeals to all ages. We have taken concerts out into the community by performing in schools, neighborhoods, homes, shops, and public spaces. With these, and many other innovations, we are now playing more music for more people than ever before in The Cleveland Orchestra’s history. As we approach the start of our second century in 2018, it is clear that our audience base is not only growing but shifting both demographically and culturally. As our patron base continues to diversify, so do expectations for enhanced experiences above and beyond the magnificence of what we do onstage. It is with this context that it became time for us to ask you directly, “What is your experience of concert attending and what can we do better?” Last season, we embarked on a significant new journey of discovery. We created a taskforce to study the “total orchestra experience” under the leadership of Cleveland Orchestra trustee Doug Kern. By email and in focus groups, we asked more than 60,000 of you for your opinions, and you responded with useful insights, clear suggestions, thoughtful commentary, and a high level of satisfaction. Whether you were longterm subscribers or first-time buyers, classical or celebrity attendees, students or seniors, you made it clear that you take great pride in The Cleveland Orchestra. We were gratified for your endorsement, and very proud that we have so many friends here in Northeast Ohio. But we also learned, in this modern world of change and transformation, that there are some aspects of the patron experience that you feel deserve attention and are open to improvement. When the taskforce’s report was presented to the board this past autumn, it gave us all much to reflect on and, more importantly, significant and focused work to do. The recommendations range in both size and scope, with some requiring longer-term planning and budgeting, while others are now in place. Already, I have seen many of you taking advantage of our new pre-ordering intermission drink service, for instance, or relaxing in Severance Restaurant for dessert after a concert. Going forward you can expect to see additional welcome enhancements to food service, more personalized online access, streamlining of the program book, and physical changes to public spaces. Enhancing the concert-going experience will be an ongoing and iterative process over the coming seasons. But we will continue to work hard each and every day to ensure that your expectations of the world’s favorite orchestra are exceeded.

Under the leadership of Franz Welser-Möst, now in his thirteenth season as the ensemble’s music director, The Cleveland Orchestra is acknowledged among the world’s handful of best orchestras. Its performances of standard repertoire and new works are unrivalled at home in Ohio, in residencies around the globe, on tour across North America and Europe, and through recordings, telecasts, and radio and internet broadcasts. Its longstanding championship of new composers and commissioning of new works helps audiences understand music as a living language that grows and evolves with each new generation. Recent performances with Baroque specialists, recording projects with internationally-renowned soloists, fruitful re-examinations and juxtapositions of the standard repertoire, and acclaimed collaborations in 20th and 21st century masterworks together enable The Cleveland Orchestra the ability to give musical performances second to none in the world. Serving the Community. Programs for students and community engagement activities have long been part of the Orchestra’s commitment to serving Cleveland and surrounding communities, and have more recently been extended to its touring and residencies. All are designed to connect people to music in the concert hall, in classrooms, and in everyday lives. Recent seasons have seen the launch of a unique “At Home” neighborhood residency program, designed to bring the Orchestra and citizens together in new ways. Additionally, a new Make Music! initiative is taking shape, championed by Franz Welser-Möst in advocacy for the benefits of direct participation in making music for people of all ages. Future Audiences. Standing on the shoulders of more than nine decades of presenting quality music education programs, the Orchestra made national and international headlines through the creation of its Center for Future Audiences in 2010. Established with a significant endowment gift from the Maltz Family Foundation, the Center is designed to provide ongoing funding for the Orchestra’s continuing work to develop interest in classical music among young people. The flagship “Under 18s Free” program has seen unparalleled success in increasing attendance and interest, and was recently extended to the Orchestra’s concerts in Miami. Innovative Programming. The Cleveland Orchestra was among the first American orchestras heard on a regular series of radio broadcasts, and its Severance Hall home was one of the first concert halls in the world built with recording and broadcasting capabilities. Today, Cleveland Orchestra concerts are presented in a variety of formats for a variety of audiences — including a popular Fridays@7 series (mixing onstage symphonic works with post-concert world music performances), film scores performed live by the Orchestra, collaborations with pop and jazz singers, ballet and opera presentations, and standard repertoire juxtaposed in Severance Hall 2014-15

meaningful contexts with new and older works. Franz Welser-Möst’s creative vision has given the Orchestra an unequaled opportunity to explore music as a universal language of communication and understanding. An Enduring Tradition of Community Support. The Cleveland Orchestra was born in Cleveland, created by a group of visionary citizens who believed in the power of music and aspired to having the best performances of great orchestral music possible anywhere. Generations of Clevelanders have supported this vision and enjoyed the Orchestra’s concerts. Hundreds of thousands have learned to love music through its education programs and celebrated important events with its music. While strong ticket sales cover just under half of each season’s costs, it is the generosity of thousands each year that drives the Orchestra forward and sustains its extraordinary tradition of excellence onstage, in the classroom and for the community. The Cleveland Orchestra was founded in 1918. Over the ensuing decades, the Orchestra quickly grew from a fine regional organization to being one of the most admired symphony orchestras in the world. Seven music directors have guided and shaped the ensemble’s growth and sound: Nikolai Sokoloff, 1918-33; Artur Rodzinski, 1933-43; Erich Leinsdorf, 1943-46; George Szell, 1946-70; Lorin Maazel, 1972-82; Christoph von Dohnányi, 1984-2002; and Franz Welser-Möst, since 2002. The opening in 1931 of Severance Hall as the Orchestra’s permanent home, with later acoustic refinements and remodeling of the hall under Szell’s guidance, brought a special pride to the ensemble and its hometown, as well as providing an enviable and intimate acoustic environment in which to develop and refine the Orchestra’s artistry. Touring performances throughout the United States and, beginning in 1957, to Europe and across the globe have confirmed Cleveland’s place among the world’s top orchestras. Year-round performances became a reality in 1968 with the opening of Blossom Music Center, one of the most beautiful and acoustically admired outdoor concert facilities in the United States. Today, concert performances, community presentations, touring residencies, broadcasts, and recordings provide access to the Orchestra’s acclaimed artistry to an enthusiastic, generous, and broad constituency around the world. Franz Welser-Möst leads a concert at John Adams High School. Through such In-School Performances and Education Concerts at Severance Hall, The Cleveland Orchestra has introduced more than 4 million young people to symphonic music over the past nine decades.

Franz Welser-Möst leads The Cleveland Orchestra in performances of Richard Strauss’s captivating opera about Daphne, a young woman who must choose between the love of men and her love for nature. Composed during the politically perilous period after the Nazis came to power and first performed in 1938, the opera had deep personal significance to the composer. Strauss knew that the myth of Daphne was the subject of the very first opera ever composed — and his own version can be viewed as a guarded demand for creative freedom in the face of political and worldly hindrances. marks Franz Welser-Möst’s thirteenth year as music director of The Cleveland Orchestra, with the future of this acclaimed partnership now extending into the next decade. Under his direction, the Orchestra is hailed for its continuing artistic excellence, is broadening and enhancing its community programming at home in Northeast Ohio, is presented in a series of ongoing residencies in the United States and Europe, and has re-established itself as an important operatic ensemble. With a commitment to music education and the Northeast Ohio community, Franz Welser-Möst has taken The Cleveland Orchestra back into public schools with performances in collaboration with the Cleveland Metropolitan School District. He has championed new programs, such as a community-focused Make Music! initiative and a series of “At Home” neighborhood residencies designed to bring the Orchestra and citizens together in new ways. Under Mr. Welser-Möst’s leadership, The Cleveland Orchestra has established a recurring biennial residency in Vienna at the famed Musikverein concert hall and appears regularly at Switzerland’s Lucerne Festival. Together, they have also appeared in residence at Suntory Hall in Tokyo, Japan, and at the Salzburg Festival, where a 2008 residency included five sold-out performances of a staged production of Dvořák’s opera Rusalka. In the United States, an annual multi-week Cleveland Orchestra residency in Florida was inaugurated in 2007 and an ongoing relationship with New York’s Lincoln Center Festival began in 2011. To the start of this season, The Cleveland Orchestra has performed fourteen world and fifteen United States premieres under Franz Welser-Möst’s direction. In partnership with the Lucerne Festival, he and the Orchestra have premiered works by Harrison Birtwistle, Chen Yi, Hanspeter Kyburz, George Benjamin, Toshio Hosokawa, and Matthias Pintscher. In addition, the Daniel R. Lewis Young Composer Fellow program has brought new voices to the repertoire, including Pintscher, Marc-André Dalbavie, Susan Botti, Julian Anderson, Johannes Maria Staud, Jörg Widmann, Sean Shepherd, and Ryan Wigglesworth. Franz Welser-Möst has led annual opera performances during his tenure in Cleveland, re-establishing the Orchestra as an important operatic ensemble. Following six seasons of opera-in-concert presentations, he brought fully staged opera back to Severance Hall with a three-season cycle of Zurich Opera productions of the Mozart-Da Ponte operas. He led concert performances of Strauss’s Salome at Severance Hall and at Carnegie Hall in May 2012 and in May 2014 led an innovative madeP H OTO BY S ATO S H I AOYAG I

for-Cleveland production of Leoš Janáček’s The Cunning Little Vixen at Severance Hall. They present performances of Richard Strauss’s Daphne in May 2015. As a guest conductor, Mr. Welser-Möst enjoys a close and productive relationship with the Vienna Philharmonic. Recent performances with the Philharmonic include a critically-acclaimed production of Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier at the 2014 Salzburg Festival as well as appearances at New York’s Carnegie Hall, at the Lucerne Festival, and in concert at La Scala Milan. During the 2014-15 season, he returns to Europe for a tour of Scandinavia with the Philharmonic, and will also lead them in a new production of Beethoven’s Fidelio at Salzburg in 2015. He led the Philharmonic’s celebrated annual New Year’s Day concert in 2011 and 2013, viewed by tens of millions as telecast in seventy countries worldwide. From 2010 to 2014, Franz Welser-Möst served as general music director of the Vienna State Opera. His partnership with the company included an acclaimed new production of Wagner’s Ring cycle with stage director Sven-Eric Bechtolf, and critically-praised new productions of Hindemith’s Cardillac, Janáček’s Katya Kabanova and From the House of the Dead, Puccini’s The Girl of the Golden West, and Verdi’s Don Carlo, as well as performances of a wide range of other operas, particularly of works by Wagner and Richard Strauss, including Tristan and Isolde and Parsifal, and Der Rosenkavalier and Ariadne auf Naxos. Prior to his years with the Vienna State Opera, Mr. Welser-Möst led the Zurich Opera across a decade-long tenure, leading more than forty new productions and culminating in three seasons as general music director (2005-08). Franz Welser-Möst’s recordings and videos have won major awards, including a Gramophone Award, Diapason d’Or, Japanese Record Academy Award, and two Grammy nominations. With The Cleveland Orchestra, he has created DVD recordings of live performances of five of Bruckner’s symphonies, and is in the midst of a new project recording major works by Brahms. With Cleveland, he has also released a recording of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and an all-Wagner album. DVD releases on the EMI label have included Mr. Welser-Möst leading Zurich Opera productions of The Marriage of Figaro, Così fan tutte, Don Giovanni, Der Rosenkavalier, Fierrabras, and Peter Grimes. For his talents and dedication, Mr. Welser-Möst has received honors that include the Vienna Philharmonic’s “Ring of Honor” for his longstanding personal and artistic relationship with the ensemble, as well as recognition from the Western Law Center for Disability Rights, honorary membership in the Vienna Singverein, appointment as an Academician of the European Academy of Yuste, a Gold Medal from the Upper Austrian government for his work as a cultural ambassador, a Decoration of Honor from the Republic of Austria for his artistic achievements, and the Kilenyi Medal from the Bruckner Society of America. He is the co-author of Cadences: Observations and Conversations, published in a German edition in 2007.

The Cleveland Orchestra’s third neighborhood residency is taking place on Cleveland’s southeast side. The Cleveland Orchestra At Home in Broadway Slavic Village began in earnest with a Neighborhood Summit on March 21, and continues with a variety of community activities, musical performances, and education presentations in the neighborhood to early June. The centerpiece is a free community concert by The Cleveland Orchestra on Friday, April 10 — broadcast live on radio WCLV 104.9, and recorded for delayed telecast on ideastream/WVIZ on Friday, April 17, at 10:00 p.m. Free tickets to the concert were soldout within hours of being released to the public on March 21. Broadway Slavic Village was chosen for this year’s residency as a Cleveland neighborhood that symbolizes both the history and the future of the city. The Broadway Historic District at the intersection of East 55th street has ethnic roots in the Czech and Polish communities with rich musical heritages. Broadway Slavic Village was not at home long ago a center of the foreclosure crisis, but today it is a national leader in reimagining urban land use and is home to people of all ages, races, and income levels, active families, young professionals, and empty nesters. “The diverse neighborhoods of Broadway Slavic Village are ideal settings for music and celebration,” says Chris Alvarado, executive director of Slavic Village Development. “We are thrilled to have been chosen to host the third annual Cleveland Orchestra neighborhood residency. We look forward to welcoming The Cleveland Orchestra and all who believe that music spans cultures and brings joy. Details of the 2015 Lincoln Center Festival this coming summer, including a week of concerts featuring The Cleveland Orchestra in residence, have been announced. Led by music director Franz Welser-Möst, The Cleveland Orchestra returns to Lincoln Center Festival with four concerts (July 15-18) focused on the exploration of the relationship of humanity with nature. The Orchestra offers two performances of Richard Strauss’s rarely-performed ”bucolic tragedy” Daphne, highlighting Franz Welser-Möst’s passion and expertise in the operatic repertory, along with two additional programs featuring works that probe humanity’s understanding of the natural world, by Messiaen, Dvořák, Beethoven, and Strauss. All of these works are being presented in concerts at Severance Hall in May. Richard Strauss’s seldom performed, one-act opera, Daphne, is among the great works of the composer’s later period. With a libretto by Joseph Gregor, the work was premiered in 1938, and retells the story of the beautiful nymph Daphne, with a plot derived from the familiar myth from Ovid’s Metamorphoses. In it, Daphne is an outsider who cherishes the beauty of nature, where she feels most at home. When the god Apollo betrays her trust and kills his rival, Daphne is inconsolable. Apollo is moved by Daphne’s profound grief and grants her immortality by transforming her into a laurel tree. This operatic gem has been called one of Strauss’s supreme love letters to the soprano voice. It is being presented at Severance Hall on May 27 and 30.

Cleveland Orchestra principal trumpet Michael Sachs joined together early in March with other principal trumpet players from many U.S. orchestras alongside trumpet legends from classical and pop genres — including Arturo Sandoval, Doc Severinsen, and Lee Loughnane (trumpeter from the band Chicago) — for a series of events and a special benefit concert to raise money and awareness in the fight against cancer. Titled “Cancer Blows,” the March 4 concert in Dallas was presented by the Ryan Anthony Foundation, created by Cleveland Institute of Music alum and Dallas Symphony principal trumpet Ryan Anthony. The evening featured live and video performances with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. Anthony was diagnosed with multiple myeloma cancer and went through a bone marrow transplant two years ago. His cancer is in remission and this special large-scale benefit concert was designed to raise awareness for this type of cancer and raise funds for research. Maltzes’ generosity being honored with special commemorative plaque at Severance Hall A special plaque is being dedicated at Severance Hall surrounding Saturday evening’s concert on April 11. The plaque permanently commemorates the generosity — and results — of the Maltz Family Foundation, created by Milton and Tamar Maltz, for their $20 million endowment gift to start The Cleveland Orchestra’s Center for Future Audiences. The plaque is located on the orchestra level of the Concert Hall, on house left (when facing the stage), just outside the auditorium in the stairway vestibule. The gift from the Maltz Family Foundation was announced in 2010, with the new Center designed to fund ongoing programs to encourage interest among young people to attend the Orchestra’s symphonic concerts. Center-funded programs focus on addressing barriers to attending Cleveland Orchestra concerts at Severance Hall and Blossom Music Center through subsidized ticket and promotional offers. Over 120,000 young people have attended Orchestra concerts since these programs began in 2011.

OrchestraNews Special memorial concert to honor Jamie Ireland on Sunday, April 12 A special memorial concert for former Cleveland Orchestra president James D. Ireland III is taking place on Sunday afternoon, April 12, beginning at 5 p.m. at Severance Hall. The hour-long concert features music performed by The Cleveland Orchestra under the direction of assistant conductor Brett Mitchell, and will also feature four speakers talking about Jamie Ireland’s accomplishments. The concert, which is free and open to the public, is a joint presentation by The Cleveland Orchestra and University Circle Inc. Jamie died at age 65 on January 20. He was a member of the Orchestra’s Board of Trustees for two decades and served as its President 2002-08. He served as the Chairman of University Circle 2008-13. Jamie loved The Cleveland Orchestra from

a young age, attending his first concert at age seven, and later becoming a devoted subscriber and an Orchestra Trustee. He was a tireless fundraiser and Orchestra advocate. He chaired the search committee that identified and in 1999 chose Franz Welser-Möst as The Cleveland Orchestra’s seventh music director. As President, he was integral to creating a transformative vision for the Orchestra’s future — combining a continuity of musical excellence with a renewed commitment to serving our region through quality programming and innovative thinking. Jamie advocated tirelessly for the Northeast Ohio community and held positions to advance that work on the boards of a variety of organizations across the years.

OrchestraNews Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra preparing for second international tour, with concerts in China in June 2015 Plans have been finalized for the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra to make its second international tour in 2015. The tour to China June 15-24 includes concerts in Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, and Hangzhou. The Youth Orchestra will be conducted by its music director, Brett Mitchell, who is also assistant conductor of The Cleveland Orchestra. The repertoire includes Dmitri Shostakovich’s Festive Overture, Wojciech Kilar’s Orawa, Samuel Barber’s Medea’s Dance of Vengeance, and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4. In addition to concerts, tour activities for the Youth Orchestra members include guided historic sightseeing tours of each city as well as visits to the Great Wall of China, the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, and the Temple of Heaven. The Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra tour is made possible in part through the generosity of the Vinney family. In 2011, the Jules and Ruth Vinney Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra Touring Fund was established to help cover costs of Youth Orchestra touring and to provide scholarships to eligible Youth Orchestra members. An endowment gift from the Jules and Ruth Vinney Philanthropic Fund, advised by their children Les Vinney, Margo Vinney, and Karen Jacobs, established this generous Touring Fund, which will provide perpetual support toward the Youth Orchestra’s ongoing touring program.

SEASON

Concert Previews The Cleveland Orchestra offers a variety of options for learning more about the music before each concert begins. For each concert, the program book includes program notes commenting on and providing background about the composer and his or her work being performed that week, along with biographies of the guest artists and other information. You can read these before the concert, at intermission, or afterward. (Program notes are also posted ahead of time online at clevelandorchestra.com, usually by the Monday directly preceding the concert.) The Orchestra’s Music Study Groups also provide a way of exploring the music in more depth. These classes, professionally led by Dr. Rose Breckenridge, meet weekly in locations around Cleveland to explore the music being played each week and the stories behind the composers’ lives. Free Concert Previews are presented one hour before most subscription concerts throughout the season at Severance Hall. The previews (see listing at right) feature a variety of speakers and guest artists speaking or conversing about that weekend’s program, and often include the opportunity for audience members to ask questions.

Cleveland Orchestra Concert Previews are presented before every regular subscription concert, and are free to all ticketholders to that day’s performance. Previews are designed to enrich the concert-going experience for audience members of all levels of musical knowledge through a variety of interviews and through talks by local and national experts. Mozart& the Concerto MOZART’S PIANO CONCERTOS

represent an exceptional body of work, unique in the classical music cannon. In writing them, Mozart was working within a general set of expectations (for the musicians and listeners), of do’s and don’ts. Understanding the rules, he gladly and gleefully stepped over the line for perfect effect. And, in writing so many examples he helped define what a concerto could be. Later composers would embellish and improvise in more personal and obviously emotional directions. But none would write so many perfect gems in this single genre — so clearly fi lled with passion and crafted in an identifiably Mozartian way. As Mitsuko Uchida ontinues to revisit some of the works from her performances of all the Mozart piano concertos here at Severance Hall (2002-07), we can be extraordinarily thankful. We are fortunate to hear these concertos again, with her clear and lucid playing illuminating the diversity of Mozart’s creativity within the concerto form. Mitsuko Uchida Mitsuko Uchida is a performer who brings deep insight into the music she plays through her own search for truth and beauty. She is particularly noted for her interpretations of Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert, both in the concert hall and on recordings, but has also illuminated the music of Berg, Schoenberg, Webern, and Boulez for a new generation of listeners. Ms. Uchida made her Cleveland Orchestra debut in February 1990, and since that time has performed with the Orchestra at Severance Hall, at its annual Blossom Music Festival, and on tour in Europe and Japan. She made her Cleveland Orchestra conducting debut in March 1998, and subsequently led performances from the keyboard of all of Mozart’s solo piano concertos as artist-in-residence across five seasons (2002-07). She is currently in the midst of an ongoing recording project with the Orchestra and Decca, revisiting select Mozart concertos. In February 2011, she performed in a special solo benefit concert at Severance Hall to raise funds to support the ongoing maintenance of The Cleveland Orchestra’s pianos. In the autumn of 2010, she travelled to Asia for performances with the Orchestra in Japan. A year earlier, she appeared as soloist during the Orchestra’s 2009 European Tour and Vienna Musikverein Residency with Franz Welser-Möst. Mitsuko Uchida performs throughout the world with many different partners. In addition to concerts with The Cleveland Orchestra, this season features engagements with the London Symphony Orchestra under Bernard Haitink’s direction, with London’s Philharmonia in collaboration with Esa-Pekka Salonen, and concerts conducting from the keyboard with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and this weekend’s performances here in Cleveland. She also performs a recital tour across Europe, and plays in Salzburg’s Mozart Week. Recent years have included a series of the five Beethoven piano concertos (spanning two seasons) with the London Symphony Orchestra and Colin Davis, performances with Amsterdam’s Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, a series of concerts in Spain and Portugal with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, and performances in Japan with the Hagen Quartet and with soprano Magdalena Kožená across Europe. Ms. Uchida was featured in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw’s Carte Blanche series, with the same programs also forming the core of series in Cologne and London. She was also the focus of a Carnegie Hall “Perspectives” series titled Mitsuko Uchida: Vienna Revisited. Mitsuko Uchida records exclusively for Decca. In April 2008, BBC Music Magazine presented its Instrumentalist of the Year and Disc of the Year awards to Ms. Uchida. certo recording. Four of her most recent recordings were recorded live at Severance Hall with The Cleveland Orchestra and feature eight of Mozart’s piano concertos. The album featuring concertos Nos. 23 and 24 received a Grammy Award in 2011 for “best instrumental soloist with an orchestra.” Ms. Uchida’s discography also includes the complete Mozart piano sonatas and piano concertos (with the English Chamber Orchestra), the complete Schubert piano sonatas, Debussy’s Études, the five Beethoven piano concertos with Kurt Sanderling and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, an album of Mozart violin sonatas with Mark Steinberg, the song cycle Die schöne Müllerin with Ian Bostridge for EMI, the final five Beethoven piano sonatas, and a recording of Berg’s Chamber Concerto with the Ensemble Intercontemporain, Pierre Boulez, and Christian Tetzlaff. Mitsuko Uchida has demonstrated a long-standing commitment to aiding the development of young musicians and is a trustee of the Borletti-Buitoni Trust. She is also co-director, with Richard Goode, of the Marlboro Music Festival in Vermont. In June 2009, she was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire. the second piano concerto Mozart wrote. The first four in the catalog are merely arrangements of other composers’ music. What is surprising about this early work is the extent to which many of the hallmarks of the later concertos are already present. The general formal outline is the same as in the mature works, and the 20-year-old composer has already found his own unmistakably personal voice. Mozart was to grow enormously in the years to come — the Concerto No. 26 from twelve years later, played after intermission, will clearly illustrate that growth — yet on a smaller scale, No. 6 is already perfect in every way. The dramatic passage in the central portion of the first movement is on a par with works from the later “golden years,” and the way he splits up the melody between the soloist and the orchestra at the beginning of the recapitulation is a true stroke of genius. The first and last movements are scored for two oboes, two horns, and strings, while in the second movement the oboes are replaced by flutes. In Mozart’s time, the same musician was able to play both flute and oboe, so this way of scoring — often found in the music of the period — did not require an increase in personnel. The change of instrumental color gives the second movement a sweeter, mellower character. And then, when the oboes return for the rondo finale, it is time for some serious fun. The dancelike main theme alternates with episodes sometimes lighthearted and sometimes more agitated. A surprise awaits us at the end: instead of the powerful confirmation of the home key that we might expect, we get something infinitely more subtle . . . —Peter Laki © 2015

in C major is the last symphony that Mozart wrote before his move to Vienna, the main turning point in his adult life. At the time he wrote this symphony, Mozart was at a crossroads professionally and musically. He had been making enormous strides as a composer, but was stifled in his job in the service of the unsympathetic Archbishop Colloredo in Salzburg. He had been trying to get away for years, without success. In 1780, he secured a commission from the Court Theater in Munich for the opera Idomeneo, his most prestigious project to date. Although this did not result in a new position of permanent employment, it contributed greatly to his growing reputation. Many features of Mozart’s mature style are anticipated in Symphony No. 34, completed in Salzburg in the summer of 1780, just three months before he left for Munich to write Idomeneo. The symphony opens with a fanfare gesture that Mozart would utilize in many works over the next decade. We find it in the Overture to Idomeneo, written the same year, but also in such later works as the “Prague” (No. 38) and “Jupiter” (No. 41) symphonies, as well as in the overture to Mozart’s last opera, La clemenza di Tito, written in the last year of his life. It is no coincidence that this fanfare appears in two operatic overtures, for many of Mozart’s later instrumental works have operatic connections. Many of these instrumental works contain themes that invite operatic associations, because of their sharp melodic profiles and through a definite “singing” quality that, like a number of things in music, is far easier to hear than to analyze. Indeed, several of the melodies in Symphony No. 34, across all three movements, fall into this category. This C-major symphony from 1780 has only three movements, instead of four. Mozart, in fact, wrote at least part of a minuet for this symphony, placed between the opening Allegro vivace and quieter Andante di molto. Most of it, however, was torn from the manuscript, leaving only the first 14 measures, which had been written on the back of the last page of the first movement. The reason why Mozart decided to delete the minuet is unclear. Perhaps he wanted (or was prevailed upon) to adhere to the earlier, three-movement symphony scheme. instrumental works, and it was an innovation not welcomed by everyone. Many musical authorities of the day were vehemently opposed to the inclusion of minuets in symphonies, on the grounds that they were “inimical to the symphony’s unity,” introducing an incongruous dance element into an otherwise serious composition. In any event, Mozart, who used both the three- and four-movement patterns in his early symphonies, tended more and more toward the four-movement scheme in his later works. Among the nearly dozen symphonies from his mature years, only No. 31 (“Paris”), No. 34, and No. 38 (“Prague”) feature just three movements. When Mozart arrived in Vienna in the spring of 1781, this symphony was his most recent representative work. As he reported to his father on April 11, 1781, “the symphony conducted by Bono [Imperial conductor Giuseppe Bonno] went magnifique, and had great success. Forty violins played — the wind instruments were doubled — ten violas, ten double-basses, eight violoncellos, and six bassoons.” This instrumentation seems enormous for the time. Indeed, six bassoons would be a luxury even today. It just goes to show that the makeup of “an orchestra” in the 18th century varied considerably according to the availability of musicians and personal tastes. In any event, the performance helped to strengthen Mozart’s reputation in Vienna, the capital of the Hapsburg Empire. He was acquiring friends and supporters, and could therefore face the final showdown with his Salzburg employer, which took place in May, just a month after his Viennese success with Symphony No. 34. The die was thus cast. Mozart was quite literally kicked out by Count d’Arco, a member of the Archbishop’s retinue. He did not return to Salzburg, but remained in Vienna instead, to be one of the first major composers not on the payroll of any royal court, aristocrat, or church. It was a bold experiment that met with a varying degree of success over the decade to follow.

At a Glance Mozart completed this Symphony in C major on August 29, 1780, in Salzburg, where it was probably performed during the first days of September. This symphony runs about 20 minutes in performance. Mozart scored it for 2 oboes, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, timpani, and strings. The Cleveland Orchestra first performed Mozart’s Symphony No. 34 in December 1950, under the direction of William Steinberg. The most recent performances were given in May 2003 under the direction of Franz Welser-Möst and in November 2007 conducted by Herbert Blomstedt.

THE MUSIC

The basic musical elements that Mozart utilizes in Symphony No. 34 are fairly simple in themselves — but the composer’s sophisticated handling of these components makes them highly complex. The repetition of part of the fanfare theme in minor adds an unexpected twist to the festive opening only seconds into the first movement. Similarly, the lyrical second theme, Severance Hall 2014-15

which starts in fairly regular metric groups of 4+4 measures, becomes utterly unpredictable in the repeat section, as the end of the phrase is repeatedly delayed by added measures. A new melodic idea begins before the previous one has been brought to a satisfactory close, leaving listeners in suspense, waiting for a musical cadence we know must be coming. Of course, the cadence does arrive with its musical feeling of “home,” but this reassurance is soon cancelled by a new kind of instability, in a series of modulations that take us to the darker region of the flat keys (C minor, A-flat major, F minor) for almost the entire duration of the movement’s development section. The subsequent recapitulation does just what its name suggests, yet there is another twist — the opening fanfare is substantially shortened and Mozart moves quickly to the lyrical second theme. He returns to the fanfare material at the end of the movement (minor-key extension and all) and fashions it into a highly effective coda. Indeed, movements in sonata form generally don’t end exactly the way they begin. This one does, and that is another theatrical gesture — the festive procession that entered at the beginning of the movement is now leaving the stage. (The fact that Mozart also did not repeat the exposition in this movement seems to be consistent with such a theatrical analogy, for the procession can’t enter the stage twice.) Mozart designated the second movement as Andante di molto (which can be translated, roughly, as “moving right along”). But he may have found that performers interpreted the Andante as an indication for slow, for he wrote in one of the violin parts advising that the tempo should be “Allegretto, rather” (più tosto allegretto). The movement is scored for strings alone, plus bassoons playing along with the cellos and double basses. The first measures of the movement are played by first and second violins, at first unaccompanied and in parallel motion. Later, the two violin sections go their separate ways, receiving support from the lower strings. Throughout the movement, unaccompanied violin passages alternate effectively with the sound of the full string orchestra. Like the first movement, the third-movement finale seems to evoke an operatic scene. The themes — in the tempo and meter of the quick Italian tarantella dance — follow on one another’s heels like actions and situations in a quick-paced, surprise-fi lled opera buffa. Interestingly, Mozart later used one of this movement’s characteristic harmonic progressions almost verbatim in the last movement of his “Linz” Symphony (No. 36), written in the same key of C major three years later. —Peter Laki Copyright © Musical Arts Association

completed the second to the last of his more than two-dozen piano concertos in February 1788. (As can be seen in the chart on page 53, a complete list of his “twenty-seven” piano concertos includes one for two pianos and one for three pianos, as well as four works from his youth, which were “learning exercises” that the young composer did by arranging the work of other composers.) Many of Mozart’s earlier concertos had also originated in late winter because the composer was in the habit of presenting a concert series each spring during the religious Lenten season. The traditional closure of the city’s dramatic theaters during Lent increased concert attendance. There is, however, no evidence that Mozart actually presented such a concert series in 1788. By this time, in fact, the Viennese public had lost their taste for Mozart and he was having difficulty garnering audiences for his works. Thus, it is probable that the new concerto in D major was not first performed until April 13, 1789, when Mozart played it during a concert appearance in Dresden. As he wrote soon afterward to his wife, Constanze, at home in Vienna, “I played my new concerto in D at court; and the following day, Wednesday, the 14th, in the morning, I received a very pretty snuffbox.” A month later, he was up the road in Leipzig, where he played the concerto again, together with a number of other works, at the city’s famed Gewandhaus hall. Writing once more to his wife, he observed, “The concert was a splendid success as far as applause and honors go, but it was all the more disappointing in terms of income.” This was nothing new to Mozart, however, for he was often greeted by acclaim without adequate fiscal compensation. The next year, in October 1790, Mozart visited Frankfurtam-Main to attend coronation festivities for Leopold II. His older, childless brother, Joseph II, had died earlier in the year, and Leopold, third son of the late Austrian empress Maria Theresa, was being crowned Holy Roman Emperor — ruling a loose assemblage of central European states, mostly Germanic, that would soon dissolve, in 1806, under the rule of his own son, Francis II (who would retain control over only Austria as Franz I). In October 1790, Mozart visited Frankfurt to attend coronation festivities for Leopold II. Mozart hoped to obtain a lucrative royal appointment, but the concert he performed in Frankfurt (featuring his new Piano Concerto in D major), was poorly attended — and the desired imperial post didn’t materialize.

Knowing of Leopold II’s high connections, Mozart hoped to obtain a lucrative royal appointment, the sort of post that had eluded him since moving to Vienna nearly a decade earlier. To his wife, Constanze, he optimistically wrote, “I am firmly resolved to make all the money I can here and then return to you rejoicing. What a fine life we shall live then!” (Mozart and his wife — and father — were frequent correspondents when apart, and their surviving letters provide a rich trove of firsthand insights to the way they perceived the composer’s life and career.) Yet Mozart was to be sorely disappointed. The concert he performed in Frankfurt-am-Main, featuring his new Piano Concerto in D major, as well as his Concerto in F major from 1784 (No. 19) and one of his symphonies, was poorly attended. Mozart wrote to Constanze, “As luck would have it, some prince was giving a big dinner just at the time of the concert and the Hessian troops were all out on a large-scale maneuver. . . . Yet in spite of it all, I was in such good spirits and delighted my audience so much that they pleaded with me to give another concert this coming Sunday.” Again, it was a case of applause without significant income. And, more importantly, the desired imperial post did not materialize. Mozart had no option but to return to Vienna almost empty-handed. He would live for barely one more year. Like many of his other works, this concerto was not published during Mozart’s lifetime, and it wasn’t given its “Coronation” nickname until three years after his death. In 1794, the publisher Johann André saw fit to print the score, but felt it would sell better with a descriptive name. Given the work’s slight association with Leopold’s crowning, André chose the title “Coronation,” perhaps as much for the work’s festive character as for any real historic connection. Whether Mozart’s widow, Constanze, approved the name is unknown — although she was the person most interested in trying to market as many leftover manuscripts as possible in order to bring some money into the house for herself and Mozart’s sons. As befits a work associated, however peripherally, with a coronation, this concerto’s first movement begins with drama, as the orchestra (complete with timpani) grabs our immediate attention. More reflective, contrasting passages follow until, at last, the stage is set and the piano joins in with a light, gracious, flowing theme that sings like Mozart’s best. The interAbout the Music

Mozart’s Piano Concertos Altogether, Mozart created more than thirty separate works for orchestra and piano. Although a few were published during his lifetime, many did not become widely available until efforts in the 19th century to organize, catalog, and publish the composer’s output. Ludwig von Köchel reconstructed the chronology of Mozart’s compositions in the mid-19th century and published his cataloging of Mozart’s works in 1862. Following Köchel’s chronology, the music for Mozart’s complete works was published by Breitkopf & Härtel, with the piano concertos numbered chronologically from 1 to 27. The first four numbered concertos are early works now known to be arrangements of keyboard sonatas by various other contemporary composers (including Raupach, Honauer, and C.P.E. Bach). Not included in the list printed here are three additional concertos that Mozart completed in 1772 from music by J.C. Bach. NUMBER

change between orchestra and soloist is well-balanced, with the pianist getting the flashiest moments, but both having music worth playing and the spotlight regularly shifting from one area of the stage to another. The lengthy solo cadenza late in the movement, which Mozart himself would have improvised in concert, opens the door for a bold orchestral statement at the movement’s end. The second movement of any Mozart concerto tends to be a period of rest for the performers and the audience alike, with a chance to clear the ears with gentle sounds. Here, the piano begins with a poignant and lyrical melody, which is then handed off to the orchestra, in the reverse of the method used in the first movement when it had been up to the orchestra to open the debate. Though less well-known than the second movement of Concerto No. 21 (remembered in modern times for its prominence in the film Elvira Madigan), this music is no less lovely and memorable. The third movement begins with a light, prancing theme for the piano, which subsequently moves to the orchestra and builds toward strong statements reminiscent of the first movement. The movement is built on variety, with contrasting themes alternating one another in close order. Throughout, Mozart remembers not to let the piano and strings steal the show; he writes well for the brass and woodwinds, too, especially the oboes, who find much to be grateful for in the score. About the Music

At a Glance Mozart wrote this Piano Concerto in D major in early 1788. The first known performance was on April 13, 1789, at a concert in Dresden, with the composer as soloist. The nickname “Coronation” was given to the concerto by publisher Johann André in 1794. This concerto runs approximately 30 minutes in performance. Mozart scored it for flute, 2 oboes, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, timpani, and strings, plus the solo piano. The Cleveland Orchestra first performed this concerto at concerts at Severance Hall in March 1950, with George Szell conducting and with Robert Casadesus as the soloist. Christoph Eschenbach was the soloist in 1970 at the only Blossom Festival performance, under Pierre Boulez’s direction. The Orchestra performed it most recently here at Severance Hall in November 2006, with Mitsuko Uchida conducting from the keyboard.

His father takes Wolfgang (and his sister, Nannerl, four years older) on the road as child prodigies. Over the next four years, they will visit and perform before royalty in Vienna, Paris, and London.

He begins writing his first operas, completing four in two years.

Wolfgang (age 14) and his father visit Italy for the first time, and are exposed to Italian opera in its native land.

1771

At age 15, he begins his service with his father’s employer, the Archbishop of Salzburg.

1778

While he and his mother are in Paris looking for lucrative employment for Wolfgang, Anna Maria is taken ill and dies. Wolfgang must bury her alone, and then tell his father and sister back in Salzburg the news.

1781

After looking for a job in Vienna, Wolfgang is dismissed from his post with the Archbishop and decides to begin life as a freelance artist.

1782

Marries Constanze Weber on August 4. They will have six children, but (typical for the era) only two will survive to adulthood (and neither of them will have progeny of their own).

1783

Over the next several years, he writes and performs a series of mature piano concertos and creates six string quartets dedicated to Haydn, making for himself both a name and a good living.

1785

Meets Haydn, who praises Mozart as “the greatest living composer.”

The Marriage of Figaro premieres in Vienna on May 1.

1787

He travels to Prague early in the year to see Figaro, where it is acclaimed a masterpiece. Prague asks him to write a new opera. Father Leopold dies on May 28. Don Giovanni, his second collaboration with librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte, is premiered in October in Prague. Wolfgang is appointed to the relatively minor (and not very well-paid) post of “chamber composer� by Emperor Joseph II.

1788

Mozart composes what become his last three symphonies (Nos. 39, 40, and 41) in anticipation of a series of benefit concerts that never take place. His finances are increasingly limited and problematic, and he moves around Vienna several times in the next few years to find lodgings he can work in or afford.

1790

CosĂŹ fan tutte is premiered in Vienna. Mozart attends the coronation of Emperor Leopold II.

1791

Composes the operas The Magic Flute and La clemenza di Tito, and begins work on his Requiem Mass. Dies on December 5 at the age of 35. After a simple funeral service, he was buried in an unmarked grave (following customs of the time in Vienna).

What’s his name? Mozart was baptized as Johannes Chrysostomus Wolfgangus Theophilus Mozart. His first two baptismal names, Johannes Chrysostomus, represent his saints’ names, following the custom of the Roman Catholic Church at the time. In practice, his family called him Wolfgang. Theophilus comes from Greek and can be rendered as “lover of God” or “loved by God.” Amadeus is a Latin version of this same name. Mozart most often signed his name as “Wolfgang Amadè Mozart,” saving Amadeus only as an occasional joke. At the time of his death, scholars in all fields of learning were quite enamored of Latin naming and conventions (this is the period of the classification and cataloging of life on earth into kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species, etc.) and successfully “changed” his name to Amadeus. Only in recent years have we started remembering the Amadè middle name he preferred.

Education and community programs date to the Orchestra’s founding in 1918 and have remained a central focus of the ensemble’s activities for over ninety years. Today, with the support of many generous individual, foundation, corporate, and governmental funding partners, the Orchestra’s educational and community programs reach more than 60,000 young people and adults annually, helping to foster a love of music and a lifetime of involvement with the musical arts. Each season’s Family Concert series at Severance Hall offers world-class music with outstanding singers, actors, mimes, and more to families from across Northeast Ohio. A recent “Under the Sea” concert featured music from Disney’s The Little Mermaid with The Singing Angels.

Through the PNC Musical Rainbows series at Severance Hall, Cleveland Orchestra musicians introduce nearly 10,000 preschoolers each year to the instruments of the orchestra.

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has awarded The Cleveland Orchestra a grant of $2.5 million to support artistically ambitious programming such as performances of opera and ballet each season. Of the Mellon Foundation’s commitment, $1.25 million will be awarded as part of a one-to-one challenge lasting through June 2016. This means that any gift to The Cleveland Orchestra designated to support special artistic initiatives will be doubled by the Mellon Foundation. Building Audiences for the Future . . . Today! The Cleveland Orchestra is committed to developing interest in classical music among young people. To demonstrate our success, we are working to have the youngest audience of any orchestra. With the help of generous contributors, the Orchestra has expanded its discounted ticket offerings through several new programs. In recent years, student attendance has doubled, now representing 20% of those at Cleveland Orchestra concerts. Since inaugurating these programs in 2011, over 120,000 young people have participated. Introduced for Blossom Music Festival concerts in 2011, our Under 18s Free program for families now includes select Cleveland Orchestra concerts at Severance Hall each season. This program offers free tickets (one per regular-priced adult paid admission) to young people ages 7-17 on the Lawn at Blossom and to the Orchestra’s Fridays@7, Friday Morning at 11, and Sunday Afternoon at 3 concerts at Severance. STUDENT TICKET PROGRAMS

In the past two seasons, The Cleveland Orchestra’s Student Advantage Members, Frequent Fan Card holders, Student Ambassadors, and special offers for student groups attending together have been responsible for bringing more high school and college age students to Severance Hall and Blossom than ever before. The Orchestra’s ongoing Student Advantage Program provides opportunities for students to attend concerts at Severance Hall and Blossom through discounted ticket offers. Membership is free to join and rewards members with discounted ticket purchases. A record 6,000 students joined in the past year. A new Student Frequent Fan Card is available in conjunction with Student Advantage membership, offering unlimited single tickets (one per Fan Card holder) all season long. All of these programs are supported by The Cleveland Orchestra’s Center for Future Audiences and the Alexander and Sarah Cutler Fund for Student Audiences. The Center for Future Audiences was created with a $20 million lead endowment gift from the Maltz Family Foundation to develop new generations of audiences for Cleveland Orchestra concerts in Northeast Ohio. In celebration of the critical role individuals play in supporting The Cleveland Orchestra each year, donors of $2,500 and more are recognized as members of special Leadership Giving Societies. These societies are named to honor important and inspirational leaders in the Orchestra’s history. The Adella Prentiss Hughes Society honors the Orchestra’s founder and first manager, who from 1918 envisioned an ensemble dedicated to community service, music education, and performing excellence. The George Szell Society is named after the Orchestra’s fourth music director, who served for twenty-four seasons (1946-70) while refining the ensemble’s international reputation for clarity of sound and unsurpassed musical excellence. The Elisabeth DeWitt Severance Society honors not only the woman in whose memory Severance Hall was built, but her selfless sharing, including her insistence on nurturing an orchestra not just for the wealthy but for everyone. The Dudley S. Blossom Society honors one of the Orchestra’s early and most generous benefactors, whose dedication and charm rallied thousands to support and nurture a hometown orchestra toward greatness. The Frank H. Ginn Society honors the man whose judicious management of Severance Hall’s finances and construction created a beautiful and welcoming home for Cleveland’s Orchestra. The 1929 Society honors the vibrant community spirit that propelled 3,000 volunteers and donors to raise over $2 million in a nine-day campaign in April 1929 to meet and match John and Elisabeth Severance’s challenge gift toward the building of the Orchestra’s new concert hall.

the world’s most beautiful concert halls, Severance Hall has been home to The Cleveland Orchestra since its opening on February 5, 1931. After that first concert, a Cleveland newspaper editorial stated: “We believe that Mr. Severance intended to build a temple to music, and not a temple to wealth; and we believe it is his intention that all music lovers should be welcome there.” John Long Severance (president of the Musical Arts Association, 1921-1936) and his wife, Elisabeth, donated most of the funds necessary to erect this magnificent building. Designed by Walker & Weeks, its elegant HAILED AS ONE OF

Georgian exterior was constructed to harmonize with the classical architecture of other prominent buildings in the University Circle area. The interior of the building reflects a combination of design styles, including Art Deco, Egyptian Revival, Classicism, and Modernism. An extensive renovation, restoration, and expansion of the facility was completed in January 2000. In addition to serving as the home of The Cleveland Orchestra for concerts and rehearsals, the building is rented by a wide variety of local organizations and private citizens for performances, meetings, and special events each year.

BE FO R E T H E CO NC E R T GARAGE PARKING AND PATRON ACCESS Pre-paid parking for the Campus Center Garage can be purchased in advance through the Ticket Office for $15 per concert. This pre-paid parking ensures you a parking space, but availability of pre-paid parking passes is limited. To order prepaid parking, call the Severance Hall Ticket Office at 216-231-1111. Parking can be purchased for the at-door price of $11 per vehicle when space in the Campus Center Garage permits. However, the garage often fills up well before concert time; only ticket holders who purchase pre-paid parking passes are ensured a parking space. Overflow parking is available in CWRU Lot 1 off Euclid Avenue, across from Severance Hall; University Circle Lot 13A on Adelbert Road; and the Cleveland Botanical Garden.

FRIDAY MATINEE PARKING Due to limited parking availability for Friday Matinee performances, patrons are strongly encouraged to take advantage of convenient off-site parking and round-trip shuttle services available from Cedar Hill Baptist Church (12601 Cedar Road). The fee for this service is $10 per car.

REMINDERS Please disarm electronic watch alarms and turn off all pagers, cell phones, and mechanical devices before entering the concert hall. Patrons with hearing aids are asked to be attentive to the sound level of their hearing devices and adjust them accordingly. To ensure the listening pleasure of all patrons, please note that anyone creating a disturbance of any kind may be asked to leave the concert hall.

LATE SEATING Performances at Severance Hall start at the time designated on the ticket. In deference to the comfort and listening pleasure of the audience, late-arriving patrons will not be seated while music is being performed. Latecomers are asked to wait quietly until the first break in the program, when ushers will assist them to their seats. Please note that performances without intermission may not have a seating break. These arrangements are at the discretion of the House Manager in consultation with the conductor and performing artists.

SERVICES FOR PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES Severance Hall provides special seating options for mobility-impaired persons and their companions and families. There are wheelchair- and scooter-accessible locations where patrons can remain in their wheelchairs or transfer to a concert seat. Aisle seats with removable armrests are also available for persons who wish to transfer. Tickets for wheelchair accessible and companion seating can be purchased by phone, in person, or online. As a courtesy, Severance Hall provides wheelchairs to assist patrons in going to and from their seats. SECURITY For security reasons, backpacks, musical instrument cases, and large bags are prohibited in the concert halls. These items must be checked at coat check and may be subject to search. Severance Hall is a firearms-free facility. No person may possess a firearm on the premises.

CHILDREN Regardless of age, each person must have a ticket and be able to sit quietly in a seat throughout the performance. Season subscription concerts are not recommended for children under the age of seven. However, Family Concerts and Musical Rainbow programs are designed for families with young children. Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra performances are recommended for older children.

T IC K E T SE RV IC ES TICKET EXCHANGES Subscribers unable to attend on a particular concert date can exchange their tickets for a different performance of the same week’s program. Subscribers may exchange their subscription tickets for another subscription program up to five days prior to a performance. There will be no service charge for the five-day advance ticket exchanges. UNABLE TO USE YOUR TICKETS? Ticket holders unable to use or exchange their tickets are encouraged to notify the Ticket Office so that those tickets can be resold. Because of the demand for tickets to Cleveland Orchestra performances, “turnbacks” make seats available to other music lovers and can provide additional income to the Orchestra. If you return your tickets at least 2 hours before the concert, the value of each ticket will be treated as a tax-deductible contribution. Patrons who turn back tickets receive a cumulative donation acknowledgement at the end of each calendar year.
