Deuteronomy z6:4-to / Romans ro:B-r3 / Luke 4ia-a3

It's said that people sometimes have to hear a message seven times before it actually sinks in. l'm not sure the Church leaders who constructed the Lectionary knew this rule, but they obviously believed there was something important for us to hear in Jesus'temptations by the devil, because we hear a version of this story every first Sunday of Lent. This story is a good check as to whether last Wednesday's ashes have truly sunk in-and whether we're indeed ready to fully enter into Lent. We may not think temptations to turn stones into bread and to rule all the kingdoms of the world are particularly relevant, but Jesus'temptations were all about control and the desire to do for ourselves what only God can do' ln that lighq they're completely relevant. l'm not sure a day goes by when l'm not tempted to take the reins of control from God. Yet Jesus, in his tired and hungry state, managed to resist these temptations. The words of Scripture were easily on his lips and helped him stay focused solely on God. He modeled the quote from Deuteronomy that we hear in today's reading from Romans: "The word iS near you, in your mouth and in your heart." Most of us likely have favorite Scripture passages which, when we hear them at Mass, refresh and renew Us. Perhaps we can Commit some of these words of "the Word" to memory and hold them particularly close every day this Lent. Keeping God's Word near us, readily on our Iips and in our hearts as Jesus did, can help us release control and stay rooted in God' J ane

We are producing a professionally made historical video to celebrate the Soth Anniversary of St. Stephen Parish. To assist with the production, we need YOUR help! Do you, or anyone in your family, have any old photos, old home movies (Super 8, r6mm, VHS), or old church literature (bulletins, flyers, special event programs, etc.) that show anything from the past at St. Stephen Parish? We'd love to include scenes in our video from your Baptisms, Confirmations, Weddings, or any special events in our Church's history. Don't be shy -- please share what you have and we'll try to include as much

Minus the Sundays, Lent is exactly forty days from fuh to Holy Saturday. That number is precious

Wednesday

becauseJesus fasted in the desert for forty days.

During Irnt we're urpd to three holy matters-prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday oblige us to fast and abstfit from eating meat; the other Fridays of Lent oblige us only to abstain from eating meat (no fasting).

You're correct about Sundays:'We're free to give ourselves a break from the penance or sacrifice we're making for tent. Freedom and spontaneity are an important feature of Christian living. Weddings aren't forbidden durrng knt, but I share your unease about dances during Lent, especially as parish events. Lent is the penitential season ofthe Church yezr, a season of prayer and reflection. True religion should form people to a sense of seasons and hours----of when to celebrate and when to tone things down for reflection and penance. F r.
