GOOD NEWS Acts 8:5-8, r.4*ry / 1 Petâ‚Źr 3:15-a8 / John r4:r.5-ze

Taken by the story of the saint and the old movie (not so old then) Song of Bernadette, I took Bernadette as my confirmation name. -The sister who taught us in fifth grade (yes, we were that young) had talked about saints as people we wanted to be like-our heroes who were constantly before God in heaven and looking out for us on earth. She also talked about the Holy Spirit and the gifts and fruits of the Spirit which we had to memorize. I confess, I was far more interested in getting the new name and curious

about the light slap on the cheek from the bishop that would herald the arrival of the afore-mentioned Holy Spirit. We're a couple of weeks from the celebration of Pentecost, and today's readings begin to tell us how the Holy Spirit enabled Jesus'followers to do miraculous things and helped them witness to theirfaith in Christ. Jesus calls the Holy Spirit the Advocate, which is a legal term, but it can also mean spokesperson, comforter, or intercessor. One thing is certain: The Spirit witnesses to the truth of Christ, who lives in us and with us. The Holy Spirit guides and teaches the Church, which is the Body of Christ. ln confirmation, the grace of the Spirit becomes fully manifested in us, enabling us to tell the world that we follow Jesus and have become new people in Christ. The saints who were our heroes and our namesakes allowed the Spirit of God to change their lives so they were more like Jesus. No wonder we were invited to be like them. Maybe it's time to work on that again. MARY KATHARINE DEELEY sundaybulletin@liguori.org

COUPLES RETREAT Living in Love Mini-RetreatJune z;r'22,2ol4 Often we say that we want to live our lives as Jesus would want us to. Sometimes we hear about Pope John Paul ll's Theology of the eody and wonder how to incorporate his divine plan for couples into our everyday lives. Some days we feel like we wantto love our spouse and make him or her feel loved and special. But it can be such a mystery to know and be able to actually make this real for us with our busy lives. A Living in Love Weekend will be presented by the best-selling authors of Passionate Parent Passionate Couple, Ed and Betty Coda, pleasejoin us here on June zt'zz- After they experienced this mini-retrea! they learned ways to solve this mystery for their own marriage and now they want to share this good news with others. Please join them. See the website www.livinginlove.org for more information and to register. Or call 839-o837.

Catholics receive most of their religious education as children. Even at the high school level, teachers are not able to explore religious topics with the same breadth and depth that occurs during the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) process. The Bible, for instance, is taught to children as stories, but adult faith requires us to read and understand Scripture as more than a story.

ffi ffi ffi

ffi ffi

Adults learn differently from children; adults ask different questions. The facts and contents remain the same, but it's not possible for your early religious

ffi

education to have the same content and depth as that of an adult who is converting to Catholicism.

ffi

Most Catholic parishes need a faith-formation program for adults who want to take their faith to a deeper level. If yours doesn't offer adult-education programs, many publishers offer programs that can be used for individual study. Let your own interest and curiosity be your guide.
