On the reality TV show The Amazing Racet participants race around the world and compete in physical challenges to win a million dollars. The host gives this "benediction" to the racers at the start of each season: "The World is waiting for you. Good luck. Travel safe. Go!,, The racers take offfor the airport and their first destination.

Jllthai different. Disciples gather, Jesus gives final instructions, and off they go. With little luggage, slower means of travel, and instructions to not greet anyone along the way, they may not have had as thrilling an adventure as The Amazing

The scene in today's Gospel isn't

Race contestants, but there was probably enough drama

for a first-century

reality show called The Amazing Evangelization. Of course, the disciples weren't pursuing a million-dollar-prize' lnstead, they sought to cure the sick, bring healing, and spread the Good News of Jesus. That raises a question for us-how outward-directed is our faith? Some denominations place a particularly intense focus on the "Jesus-and-me" relationship-how Jesus has saved me, how he is my "personal" Savior'

Of course, a personal relationship with Jesus is extremely important. But unless that relationship le.ads us outward to serve God's children, then I'm not sure we're truly following Jesus' example. Jesus is clear that discipleship requires trusting God and going outto bring hope and healing to others. What are we doing each day to bring God's loving touch to those in need? How "amazing" is our evangelization? Janel Esker

Yet, living longer on a fixed income with chronic conditions and diseases presents unique challenges. Call the office for more information.

de ar PAD Rf, Some of our Christian friends don't belieue in purgatory because it's not in the Bible. When did thc Catholic Church adopt this belief

"All who die in God's grace and friendship, but [who are] still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation; but after death they [must] undergo purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven" (Catechism of tLrc Catlnlic Church, 1030). This process of purification is purgatory.

Genesis

purgatory may not appear in the Bible, but it does capture a truth found there. Scriptural imagery of figuratively passing through fire for spiritual refinement (see 1 Corinthians 3:15) helped formulate the doctrine of purgatory in the patristic period. Forgiveness of sins after death is also suggested in Matthew 72:32 and 2 Timothy

By the Middle Ages, purgatory had been defined at the Second Council of Lyons (1274), the Council of Florence (1,439), and in the Decree on Purgatory at the Council of Trent (1563). The doctrine of purgatory is part of our Tradition and deposit of faith. At one of his weekly general audiences in 201,1, Pope Benedict )CII said, "Purgatory is like a purifying fire burning inside a person, a painful experience of regret for one's sins. A soul stained by sin cannot present itself to God" (see Revelation
