Bodegas Lanzaga Rioja, Spain This summer, Will and I were delighted to be invited on a trip to Discover Rioja. During our 3 day trip we were keen to visit some wineries that are looking to do things differently in Rioja and move away from excessive oak aging. One such winery and a real hidden gem was Bodega Lanzaga.
Located in the village of Lanciego amongst six hills and three valleys. The Sierra Cantabria shields the vineyards from the Atlantic winds and rains from the north, creating a unique microclimate with low rainfall. Soils are stony with a palm-deep layer of iron-rich calcareous clay overlaying the mother rock. The whole estate is dry-farmed and worked organically, it’s the second largest organic certified estate in Rioja – the largest being its parent estate – Remelluri. Production is relatively small in comparison to the big brands: they currently produce between 180-250,000 bottles a year, compared to many of the more well-known estates that produce several million.
BUY NOW 2016 CORRIENTE - £15.95 My wine of the year, delicious and unbelievable value. The Bodega use a Burgundy style classification for the wines: Corriente is their négociant wine, they use the grapes that don’t go into their village wines and also buy some grapes for this from next door village Labastida. The term Corriente was used in the early 20th Century to describe good, approachable everyday wines drunk by ordinary people, that reflect their region. They’re particularly pleased with the 2016 vintage.
BUY NOW 2013 LANZAGA - £27.50 Lanzaga is their village wine from older vines, it’s 90% Tempranillo plus Graciano which adds structure and a herbal, liquorice note, Lanzaga is aged in old foudre. Proprietor Telmo Rodriguez isn’t a fan of new oak: “oak is a cosmetic, it masks the taste of the village and the grapes”. The nose is super expressive, nuanced and elegant, mixing flowers with wild berries, cured meat, spices and minerals. The wines have incredible freshness, and here, there are very elegant and refined tannins.
91 POINTS – Robert Parker Always a sure value, but the 2016 is truly exceptional, possibly the finest vintage they have bottled to date. It’s floral and aromatic, very elegant and balanced. There are fine tannins, a chalky minerality and a supple finish.
93 POINTS - James Suckling Classically styled with dried cherry, tobacco and earthy notes giving rise to dried roses and red cherries. The texture is supple on entry, the fine-grained tannins carrying fresh blueberry and cassis flavors. Very fresh, long and soulful. Compact finish. Drink or hold.

This wonder is made from Italian grape varieties grown in a region of Australia called Riverland, traditionally known for its bulk wine. Tim Wildman MW is the creative genius behind this wine. Pale candy pink, aromas of strawberries and cream with soft, persistent foam, peach and nectarine in a light body with a refreshing, watermelon-like wetness and a bone-dry drinkability. Serve cold and get natural! Cortese Vanedda Organic 2016, BUY NOW Sicily Italy - £15.95 Sicily is a place I want to visit, however in the meantime I’m just going to have to enjoy
the wine produced there! A blend of two local hero varieties; Catarratto 50% and Grillo 50%; surprising and serious style from Sicily that’s reminiscent of Burgundy. Made from an organic field blend, co-fermented on their skins in old 30-litre Slavonian oak botti. Fresh, tropical-tinged aromas and a beautiful richness on the palate. Depth and structure underpinned by clean, crisp acidity and a touch of spice. This was a pleasure to discover and a great addition to the Love Wine cru! Broc Cellars Love Red 2017, Solano County Green Valley, USA - £23.95 BUY NOW Minimal intervention and sustainable farming. An elegant and seductive blend of 50% Carignan, 36% Valdiguié, 8% Syrah, 6% Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine making process is complex, as is the wine; yet it still manages not to confuse matters by delivering something smart, lively and natural! Slightly chilled, this works a treat; this may even be California’s equivalent to a Cur Beaujolais. Pegasus Bay Aria Late Picked Riesling 2014, Waipara Valley New Zealand - £22.50 BUY NOW Standing proud in a traditionally shaped 70cl Riesling bottle this Riesling is luscious, rich and complex yet carries great acidity keeping this 2014 super fresh. If you need a reassuring word, then turn to the Pegasus Bay website and just cast an eye over the vintage write-ups... this is a great value sticky, I fully recommend! TOP TIPS FOR BUYING CRAFT BEER Ask questions. Tell the experts what you usually like drinking and they’ll come up with suggestions for similar yet (hopefully) better options. Try, try, try. There’s a whole world of different beer styles and sub-styles out there that could be completely alien to you at first. But don’t scoff at the notion of a sour beer such as a saison or run scared from a murky, eight per cent double IPA before you’ve given them a try. Your new favourite beer could be just a few hops away. Stick to a budget. At first glance, craft beer can seem crazily expensive. For a very strong, limited edition 500ml can you will sometimes be expected to pay upwards of £7. We have said it before and we will say it again, Port isn’t just for Christmas but for many of us it is the only time of year we buy a bottle. So, if you are making your annual Port purchase read our updated Port profile first to remind yourself of the best way to enjoy a glass and what we have to offer. Port originated in Portugal in the 18th Century. It first became popular in England when the English were at war with France and no longer had access to French Wines. Port was a good wine to import as it is fortified with brandy, acting as a preservative the brandy made the wine stay fresh on oversea voyages. It’s also the brandy in Port that gives it a higher alcohol content than most other wines. How to drink Port Ideally Port should be served in a narrow wine glass at around 18 degrees (just below room temperature). Only fill the glass
half-way so the wine can aerate and you can appreciate its aroma. That being said (and with any drink for that matter), drink it however you want to as long as you enjoy it! Cheese and Chocolate To best enjoy your Port as a digestif, we recommend pairing it with either a sweet or savoury treat. A strong veined blue cheese like Stilton, Roquefort, Gorgonzola or a well-aged Cheddar are the best cheese companions. These pungent cheeses offset the sweetness of your Port creating the perfect balance. If you want to take it to the next level add some grapes, walnuts and quince to your Port experience to perfectly compliment your palette. Dark Chocolate between 50%-70% is a good match for drinking Port. Port’s sweetness makes the chocolate taste even more decadent, don’t go too dark or too light though as the balance will be off.
QUICKLY, BRING ME A BEAKER OF PORT SO THAT I MAY WET MY MIND AND SAY SOMETHING CLEVER. Peter Lanberg LBV and Vintage These are two common types of Port you will come across. But what is the difference? LBV (Late Bottled Vintage) are vintage wines that have been aged for between four and six years in large oak vessels before they are bottled. This helps to make these wines more approachable on release, compared to Vintage Ports. They are similar in style to a Reserve (higher-quality) Ruby Port which are ready to drink from release and rarely benefit from ageing. For Vintage Ports, all ageing prior to bottling takes place in large oak vessels or stainless steel and are unfiltered, meaning that you should decant before drinking. Whilst Vintage Ports are tannic and concentrated in youth, they will mellow over many decades.
Colheita Ports Colheita Ports are great as they are a little less heavy then a traditional vintage port. They are tawny ports aged in small oak barrels from a single vintage. Colheitas change dramatically during this extended time in cask and take on flavours of dried fruits, nuts, citrus and exotic spices, while becoming very smooth and complex the older they get. They are also amazing with cheese and a game of Pictionary!

The Method A general rule for measurements with this cocktail starts with 50% gin, 25% vermouth & 25% brandy, the size of your cocktail will not matter if you follow the percentages. To batch it up, use a bigger vase to complete the dilution process. In your mixing glass add your three ingredients and stir over ice until the burn of the alcohol has left, fine strain the mixture into a nice chilled coupe or martini glass and manipulate the oils of the pink grapefruit out of the skin and over the drink for a lifted aromatic finish.
The Method Moisten the rim of a cocktail glass with the extra clementine juice.Sprinkle some cinnamon onto a plate, invert the glass, dip the rim in the spice, then set aside. Shake all the remaining ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice and strain into the glass.
