VIENNA CITY OF DREAMS

Page 2

THUR 7 – FRI 8 FEBRUARY 7.30PM MATINEE FRIDAY 2.30PM less is MORE in association with Middlesbrough Theatre

YOUR HOME IN THE WEST by Rod Wooden Winner of the 1990 Mobil International Playwriting Competition and the 1992 John Whiting Award

with the Scarborough Spa Orchestra 2

Everyone loves a good tune – and no-one can be more relied on to provide one than the Strauss family. Their lilting waltz melodies, breath-taking polkas and stirring marches always put a spring in the step - even when sitting in the theatre! Add to these favourites a host of other composers who found fame and fortune in Vienna – such as the glorious melodies of Franz Lehar – and first class musical entertainment can be guaranteed. Middlesbrough Theatre’s annual Strauss evenings have been one of the highlights of the calendar for over ten years. Add the theatre’s favourite orchestra to the mix - and you have the perfect start to the New Year. Unmissable!

Following the success of Miss Crispy 1988 less is MORE returns with a pulsating tragi-comic drama. On a run-down Newcastle housing estate, Jean - divorced from the violent, foul-mouthed Micky - rules over a household that teeters on the edge of disaster every time her ex-husband bursts through the front door. Once again, less is MORE combines professional actors with local raw talent to create a piece of theatre that shows just how diverse, dire and ultimately wonderful life can be!

Please note the production contains very strong language and scenes you may find distressing.

WHAT THE DICKENS? The Misadventures of Charles Dickens

THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST by Oscar Wilde

6

From the producers of I’m An Aristocrat, Get Me Out Of Here comes another inventive and gripping comedy. Three actors play over 20 roles in 80 minutes of fast-paced fun and thrilling action, brimming with unfeasibly quick costume changes, stupidly surreal characters and wonderfully daft jokes.

“To lose one parent, Mr Worthing, may be regarded as a misfortune; to lose both looks like carelessness.”

Young Charles Dickens is a rookie reporter on The Morning Chronicle. Whilst investigating the foggy slums of Ye Olde London Towne, he accidentally stumbles on a story that could make his reputation.

Widely acknowledged as one of the greatest comedies in the English language, Oscar Wilde’s theatrical masterpiece has it all - wonderful characters, sparkling dialogue, gloriously improbable plot twists and a sprinkling of romance – all brought to vivid, extravagant life with LCT’s customary flair.

Jack is in love with Gwendolen. Algernon is in love with Cecily. But when an identity crisis spirals out of control, the previously separate worlds of town and country collide and delicious mayhem ensues.

Expect a world of pockmarked pickpockets, cobwebby convicts, teeming slums and empty marshes, dark secrets and convoluted plots. And lots and lots of fog….

‘Extremely funny…it is as if a grand Victorian dame has finally been allowed to unloosen her corset.’ - THE STAGE

FEAR OF MUSIC by Barney Norris

Wild Night Out!

Chris Packham goes wild across the country with an entertaining and informative look at some of nature’s most popular and interesting species. Illustrated with his superb photographs from around the world and from his beloved UK, he explains the fascinating ecologies and behaviours of a range of creatures from Leopards to Barn Owls, from Cheetahs to Pond Skaters, from Polar Bears to Peregrines He tells of close shaves, the often bizarre lengths he’ll go to getting the picture and challenges people to think again about the conventions of conservation. His conversational style, irreverent humour and sometimes controversial opinions make for a hugely rewarding evening’s entertainment. chrispackham.co.uk £14/Concessions £12.50 CALL 01642 81 51 81 TO BOOK

Packed with beautiful observation and outrageously good jokes, this is a brilliant burst of a play from an upand-coming young writer. Luke is the first in his family to go to university, and he’s determined to stop his irritating fireball of a brother from following in their father’s footsteps by joining the army. Two boys with starkly different futures, surrounded by mixtapes, guitars and ambitions, discover how easy it is to get lost in a country that doesn’t look after its own. ‘Roars of laughter of recognition from the enthusiastic audience. A highly impressive evening’ - REMOTEGOAT This production is supported by Out of Joint. Running Time 75 minutes Contains strong language

RUSSIAN COSSACKS Performed to a live orchestra

Queen’s Greatest Hits 8

300 costumes, 40 world-class performers and 1,000 litres of Vodka can only mean one thing – the Russian State Dance Ensemble is here! The Cossacks‘ fiery dances and songs are as true and honest as the souls of their country folk. Particular attention has been paid to the detail of the Cossacks’ wonderfully traditional and elaborate costumes. The highlight of this spectacular show is the Great Cossack Dance for which special sabres have been made of titanium, ensuring sparks really do fly!

MAGIC - the first and still the best tribute to Queen - perform all of their greatest hits plus some you may not have heard for a while, in their latest show for 2012. It’s refreshing that in these days of prerecorded backing tracks, Magic perform completely live. With five vocals to back up the powerful lead vocal of the dynamic Roger Brown, along with two guitars, bass, drums and the brilliant piano and keyboard skills of Dave Chapman, Magic produces a sound that is second to none.

Come and witness the glowing vitality and immense warmth to live a Russian Cossack's life, if only for a night.

While not attempting to emulate Queen visually, Magic creates all the excitement of a Queen live show - not to be missed.

Words Don’t Come Easy

Inspired by his fascination with the vagaries of the English language, Dave’s hilarious new show examines many of life’s situations where words really don’t come easy. These include tongue-tied parents explaining the facts of life, newspaper stories, magazine poems, adolescent chatup lines, TV news speak and an extended selection of song lyrics that range from the lazy through surreal to the ridiculous. A rich and spicy comedy casserole or as Dave would describe it “a sort of Lexiconcarne.... sorry!” davespikey,co.uk

Celebrate the Bard’s birthday with the show that does what it says on the tin: there are songs, they are silly and they are based on Shakespeare. Spend an evening with ‘Fearg & The Sonnettes’ - four singers who will serenade you with hilarious “synopsongs” of some of Will’s most famous works and illuminate a weird corner of Shakespeare’s world with their witty and catchy tunes. ‘They can really, really sing. Ugly Duckling is Northern Ballet’s first production especially for children.
