The Cornwall Blind Association (CBS) exists purely to ensure that the blind/  visually impaired people in Cornwall have support as needed be it advice, assessment, training and supply of aids, and encouraging an arranging socialising. The CBA relies on the generosity of local people not only for financial support but also for volunteers.

The Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association Forces Help provides practical support to those who serve; those who used to serve and the families of both. Trained caseworkers, operating through a local branch network, specialising in sourcing funds from assistance providers.

Support Our Soldiers was formed in March 2003 to encourage and provide support for members of the British Armed Forces serving overseas and their families at home. Since that time, thanks to the overwhelming kindness and generosity of the British public, over 100,000 morale boosting care parcels have been sent out to those on the frontline, and countless families helped through the very difficult time with their loved ones away on tour.

A WARM WELCOME TO ARMED FORCES DAY CORNWALL The Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall, Colonel Edward Bolitho OBE, is Her Majesty The Queen’s personal representative in Cornwall. He has extensive links with the Armed Forces having joined the Grenadier Guards in 1978, serving with them for 20 years in numerous parts of the world and commanding the 1st Battalion over the period 1993-95, during which time he was awarded the OBE.

IN THE AIR Venom Display Duration: 8 mins Designed to replace the Vampire, the Venom was developed by deHavilland in 1948 and boasted a thinner, more swept back wing as well as a more powerful Ghost engine. The first of its type flew on 2 September 1949 and entered service in 1952, lasting until 1983. It had four 20mm cannons in the nose and could carry rockets or bombs beneath the wings.

Avro Anson Display Duration: 6 mins An historic aircraft that first went into operation in 1936 and were last used by the Royal Afghan Air Force before withdrawal from service in 1972. With only a handful still flying today, she is indeed a unique piece of aviation history.

Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Duration: 10-12 mins A Spitfire and Lancaster, two of the most iconic and historic aeroplanes ever built will take to the skies over Falmouth for a 10-12 minute display. Best vantage points? Waterside as the display will take place over the inner harbour.

ON THE WATER

Two fantastic ships A Royal Navy Minesweeper HMS Brocklesby and RFA (Royal Fleet Auxiliary) ship Lyme Bay will be alongside Queen’s Wharf in Falmouth Docks throughout the day (10am-5pm). There will be FREE ferries in operation to take you from Prince of Wales Pier to the ships, where you will then be able to take a tour round. An opportunity not to be missed!

SEA & AIR Search & Rescue Display Duration: Approx. 15 mins Appreciate the incredible role our search and rescue teams play. An inshore and Severn Class all-weather lifeboat from Falmouth RNLI Station will undertake a mock rescue in the inner harbour accompanied by a Sea King helicopter from RNAS Culdrose 771 Air Sea Rescue Squadron.

THE MOOR One of the key venues throughout the day, the piazza will come alive with all sorts of exciting things to do, see and touch! From a life-sized replica of a Spitfire plane, to the cockpit of a Harrier Jump Jet there will be a host of activities to enthral the whole family.

10 tonne logistic vehicle – 232 Squadron No 232 Squadron was formed on 20 August 1918 from Nos.333, 334 and 335 Flights of the seaplane station at Felixstowe and was engaged in anti-submarine and reconnaissance patrols until the Armistice. The squadron disbanded on 5 January 1919. On 15 November 1944, 232 reformed as a transport squadron.

RNAS Culdrose play a key role saving lives around the Cornish coast.

THE MOOR Replica Spitfire – RAF Association To accompany the fly-by and indeed the Spitfire on Prince of Wales Pier, visitors will have the opportunity to get up close to a plane that of course played a vital role within the Battle of Britain.

Climbing wall – Falmouth Platoon Army Cadets Got a head for heights? Free to the public, have a go at scaling an approx. 15m climbing wall!

PRINCE OF WALES PIER Make a beeline to the Pier to view an actual Spitfire or get a free ferry across to the two ships mentioned earlier (see page 4). The plane is in the process of being restored in Cornwall and is on display today. A must see!

MARKET STREET & CHURCH STREET We have activities and displays throughout the town to really celebrate Armed Forces Day Cornwall 2013. As you’re walking along Market and Church Street, look out for an armoured personnel carrier and a variety of other military vehicles plus the surf display tent provided by Surf Action charity.

CHURCH STREET CAR PARK Falmouth’s town centre will be closed for traffic between 09.30am-5.00pm meaning that Church Street Car Park will be transformed for the day with a huge variety of things going on! There’ll be piped bands playing, display tents for the Royal Marine Commandos, a climbing wall, an un-armed combat display, media trailer and a host more besides.

Weapons Dome - Royal Naval Commandos Team The RMCRT will demonstrate today’s modern weapons and kit. Come and try on a Royal Marines weapons harness and bergan, see the new Sniper rifle and compare with the Soviet AK47 assault Rifle.

Climbing wall – Royal Naval Commandos Team Come and see if you have a head for heights, our climbing wall stands at 24ft high, see if you can reach the top with the Royal Marines Commandos? The wall has 4 climbing faces and each is slightly more difficult. A height restriction exists.

EVENTS SQUARE With a host of activities inside and around Events Square area, culminating in the FREE Royal Marines Band Concert in the evening (7pm), do make sure you have made enough time to see and visit all the Armed Forces Day venues across the town.

The Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines The Royal Marines Band Service is renowned as one of the finest musical organisations in the world. The training they receive is second to none and covers every aspect needed to become a Royal Marines Musician or Bugler. Our Bands are the public face of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines, distinctive in white helmets and blue uniforms - drawing huge crowds whenever they perform. Join us at the performance in Falmouth. Let’s not forget the RM Bands have a war role as well, many of the men and women seen today have been employed in places like Afghanistan as stretcher bearers, ambulance drivers and first aid parties.
