Teddy Bear Create this enduring Teddy Bear to be someone’s special friend. He will reward his owner with lots of love and loyalty. He would also make a special gift for an adult bear fan.

Materials Rowan Yorkshire Tweed DK: 4 x brown fleck 353 (for Bear), 2 x pink 350 (A) Rowan 4-ply Soft: 1 x white 376 (B) (to be used double throughout) 2 small buttons Black embroidery thread for eyes and mouth Pair 4mm (UK 8) knitting needles Toy Stuffing

Teddy Head Cast on 6 sts. Work in garter stitch throughout. Row 1: Knit. Row 2: Inc in every stitch (12 sts). Row 3: Knit. Row 4: K1, inc into each of the next 10 sts, k1 (22 sts). Row 5: Knit.

Shape Nose Row 6: K1, m1, k7, m1, k6, m1, k7, m1, k1 (26 sts). Next and every odd row: Knit. Row 8: K1, m1, k9, m1, k6, m1, k9, m1, k1 (30 sts). Row 10: K1, m1, k11, m1, k6, m1, k11, m1, k1 (34 sts). Row 12: K1, m1, k13, m1, k6, m1, k13, m1, k1 (38 sts). Row 14: K1, m1, k15, m1, k6, m1, k15, m1, k1 (42 sts). Work 2 rows in garter stitch. Row 17: (K1, k2tog) six times, k6, (k2tog, k1) six times (30 sts).


Shape Head Row 18: K11, m1, k1, m1, k6, m1, k1, m1, k11 (34 sts). Next and every odd row: Knit. Row 20: K12, m1, k1, m1, k8, m1, k1, m1, k12 (38 sts). Row 22: K13, m1, k1, m1, k10, m1, k1, m1, k13 (42 sts). Row 24: K14, m1, k1, m1, k12, m1, k1, m1, k14 (46 sts). Row 26: K15, m1, k1, m1, k14, m1, k1, m1, k15 (50 sts). Row 28: K16, m1, k1, m1, k16, m1, k1, m1, k16 (54 sts). Row 30: K6, (m1, k1) thirteen times, k16, (k1, m1) thirteen times, k6 (80 sts). Work 13 rows in garter stitch.

Shape Back Row 44: (K8, k2tog) to end (72sts). Next and every odd row: Knit. Row 46: (K7, k2tog) to end (64 sts). Row 48: (K6, k2tog) to end (56 sts). Row 50: (K5, k2tog) to end (48 sts). Row 52: (K4, k2tog) to end (40 sts). Row 54: (K3, k2tog) to end (32 sts). Row 56: (K2, k2tog) to end (24 sts). Row 58: (K1, k2tog) to end (16 sts). Row 60: (K2tog) to end (8 sts). Cast off.

Arms (make 2) Cast on 7 sts. Row 1: Knit. Row 2: K1, (m1, k1) to end (13 sts). Repeat the last 2 rows once more (25 sts). Row 5: Knit. Row 6: K6, m1, k1, m1, k11, m1, k1, m1, k6 (29 sts). Work a further 28 rows garter stitch without shaping.

Shape Top of Arms Decrease 1 st at each end of this and every following 6th row until there are 17 sts, then on every following 3rd row until there are 11 sts. Next row: K1, (k2tog) to end (6 sts). Cast off.

Legs (make 2) Body (make 2) Cast on 9 sts. Work 2 rows in garter stitch. Row 3: Increase 1 st at each end of row (11 sts). Row 4: Knit. Repeat the last 2 rows four times (19 sts). Row 12: K9, m1, k1, m1, k9 (21 sts). Next and every odd row: Knit. Continue to increase in this manner (either side of centre stitch) on every

Cast on 46 sts. Work 12 rows in garter stitch. Next row: Decrease 1 st at each end of row (44 sts). Cast off 2 sts at the beg of the next 2 rows (40 sts). Cast off 4 sts at the beg of the next 2 rows (32 sts). Work a further 31 rows in garter stitch without shaping. Cast off 4 sts at the beg of the next 2 rows (24 sts).

Cast off 4 sts at the beg of the next 2 rows (16 sts). Cast off remaining stitches.

Paw Pads (make 2) Cast on 5 sts. Work in garter stitch. Row 1: Knit. Row 2: Increase 1 st at each end of this and every following alt row until there are 13 sts. Work a further 6 rows in garter stitch without shaping. Next row: Decrease 1 st at each end of every alt row, until there are 8 sts. Cast off.

Ears (2 pieces each ear – make 4 in total) Beginning at the top of the ear, cast on 16 sts. Work in garter stitch. Row 1: Knit. Row 2: Increase 1 st at each end of row (18 sts). Row 3: Knit. Repeat the last 2 rows until there are 24 sts. Work a further 2 rows without shaping. Next row: Decrease 1 st at each end of this and every following alt row, until there are 16 sts. Cast off.

To Make Up the Bear Darn in all loose ends. Join head seam and stuff firmly. Sew ear sections together and position on head as illustrated. Leaving neck open, join all body pieces and attach head. Join both leg seams, inserting pads at

the base, and stuff firmly. Repeat with arms. Attach arms and legs to body, ensuring that Teddy will sit steadily! Embroider on the eyes and nose.


Teddy’s Jumper

Neckband

Using A, cast on 50 sts. Work 8 rows in k2, p2 rib. Continue in st st and work 40 rows.

Join right-hand shoulder using mattress stitch. With right side facing and using A, pick up 54 sts evenly around the neck. Work 5 rows in k2, p2 rib. Cast off in pattern.

Cast off 15 sts at the beg of the next 2 rows (20 sts). Cast off remaining sts.

Catch left side shoulder together at sleeve edge (approx 2.5cm). Using A, pick up 32 sts evenly from neck edge, down to sleeve edge and back up to the other side of neckband, and knit Next row: Purl. Next row (buttonhole row): K23, yfwd k2tog, k3, yfwd k2tog, k2 (30 sts). Next row: Purl. Cast off.

Back

Front Using A, cast on 50 sts. Work 8 rows in k2, p2 rib. Continue in st st and work 4 rows. Work in stocking stitch. Using Fair Isle technique and B double where indicated, work the next 11 rows from the chart. Continue in st st until 34 rows have been completed from top of rib.

Divide for Neck Next row: K20, cast off central 10 sts, k to end. Using the first set of 20 sts only, work p 1 row. Next row: Decrease 1 st at neck edge on this and following two alt rows (17 sts). Work 3 rows in st st. Cast off. Rejoin yarn to remaining 20 sts and work to match first side, reversing shapings.

To Make Up Jumper Darn in all ends and sew buttons to shoulder. Fold sleeves in half lengthways and, starting at the centre of the shoulder, sew on using mattress stitch. Join side and sleeve seams.
