Flag atop grain elevator inspires Brother Ed

Ed Sandefur

One day while traveling to Perry I noticed atop a grain elevator at the Everidge Farm the American Flag. I can really appreciate the statement made by placing the flag for all to see passing by the farm.

As I drove on, my thoughts turned to the Pledge of Allegiance we all have spoken at school, ball games, VBS and many other gatherings and what it means to me as an American. I’m certainly proud of what the flag stands for and caught myself reciting the pledge as I drove. “I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all”. Interestingly, the Pledge of Allegiance was written in 1892 by Francis Bellamy (1855–1931), who was a Baptist minister. With the words of the Pledge revolving around in my mind I soon began to connect biblically. “One Nation under God” spoke to me through the scripture 1 Peter 2:9 “But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness intoHis marvelous light”. What a marvelous thought Peter gives us in belonging to the Lord and chosen at that! He says we are chosen generation, royal priesthood and a chosen nation by Holy God. A special people God loves and calls His own! Praise His Name! The pledge continues with “indivisible” meaning unable to separate apart. Another wonderful thought and scripture reference from Paul in Romans 8:35 “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ”? and

again in verses 38 & 39 “For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord”. Ending “with liberty and justice for all” speaks of the freedom not only as Americans living in the freedom we have but also speaks of the freedom in Christ we have. The Bible says in John 8:36 “Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed” and this scripture reminds me of another pledge with a promise of liberty. I pledge allegiance to the Christian Flag and to the Savior for whose Kingdom it stands. One Savior, crucified, risen, and coming again with life and liberty to all who believe. Bless His name! Bro. Ed

About the cover Ten years ago Cathy Mitchell and her family stopped at BBC while riding bikes. (They spend a week riding bikes in Georgia during March.) Our pastor at that time, Dennis Phillips, graciously entertained them and even gave the boys toy camels. The editor thinks that they came by again sometime during Andy Blankenship’s pastorate. Their picture was on the front of the August 2003 Blessings from their first visit along with a thank note to Pastor Phillips for his hospitality. Anyway, they came and worshiped with us Easter Sunday and brought friends. They filled two pews in the center section. The boys (top row) have grown quite a bit of course, and Caden Mae, who Cathy was pregnant with during their 2003 visit is the girl on the top. Cathy is the adult in the cover picture. Cathy and her family are from Louisville, Kentucky.

Congratulations to Matt Youngblood Matt placed first in extemporaneous speaking at the state literary competition last month.

RUSH or “Reaching Unchurched Students for HIM” was organized in 2004, originally a weekend event held in LaGrange with several local churches. RUSH grew into a premiere gathering of students for one purpose...TO WORSHIP GOD! In 2009 founder Marc Prichett took RUSH Weekend to a new level by partnering with S. Truett Cathy’s The Rock Ranch. In cooperation with The Rock Ranch, over 1200 students come together at this new venue to worship God, with over 128 decisions made for Christ!!! With each passing year, RUSH Weekend is reaching new heights. In 2012 over 4000 students came together and 600 decisions were made. The mission of RUSH is to motivate and equip students and student pastors to reach other students in their communities for Christ. The goal is to effectively and creatively convey the truths of God’s
