Gromett’s late strike earns point Saturday 2 November 2013 Sussex County League Division One Chichester City 2 -2 Newhaven
By Chester Browton A LATE GOAL from Joe Gromett earned Chichester a 2-2 draw against Newhaven in an exciting match of changing fortunes. City, who were playing against a forceful wind in the first-half, took the lead after 10 minutes with a brilliant goal from Morgan Forry. The left-winger stole the ball from an opponent on the edge of the box and then swivelled round to rifle in an unstoppable shot for his fifth goal of the season. Newhaven, who were missing their regular strike-pairing of Tyler Goatcher and Ebou Jallow, took time to work their way into contention. On 25 minutes a
neat cross-field ball found Lee Robinson who had a clear run on goal, but his angled shot was narrowly wide. And then right on the stroke of half-time the Dockers drew level. The Chichester defenders found themselves stretched during a period of sustained pressure and when the ball was cannoned out of a bunch of players to the unmarked Mark Probert he had no trouble converting – despite loud appeals for offside. Spectators were treated to aggressive attacking football throughout the second-half. A Newhaven move on 51 minutes finished with the ball hitting the post and rebounding away off keeper Anthony Ender. City weren’t so fortunate three minutes later when Newhaven playmaker James Rhodes squared the ball to Jayson Sowter, whose shot took a deflection and wrong-
footed Ender to make it 2-1. Dockers’ Jake Buss did well to block a powerful shot from Alex Ansa on 68 minutes, the follow-up going agonisingly wide with the keeper still lying in the mud. The turning point of the game arrived with 13 minutes remaining. Robinson went down in the box despite there being minimal contact, but justice was done when Probert’s spot-kick was fired over the top. Had it gone in, there would have been no way back for Chichester but instead they went on a frenzied assault during the dying stages, with Gromett causing havoc for the exhausted Newhaven backline. On 89 minutes Gromett’s trickling ball somehow found a path through a crowd of players for the equaliser. Straight from the
Sussex County Football League Tables
Division One restart the same man charged at the opposition like a rhino and his shot went just outside the post. By now, the Dockers’ players were reeling and Frazer Smith spearheaded one last attack with Gromett in his slipstream. For a moment it seemed Chichester had clinched an incredible victory with Gromett easily netting Smith’s pass, but the linesman’s flag came to Newhaven’s rescue and immediately after the final whistle sounded. City: Ender, Heath, Prior, Cody, Boniface, Blatchford, Tallant, F Smith, Burbridge, Ansa, Forry. Subs: Gromett, Groom, Watts.

City hammer the Wombles Sunday 3 November 2013 FA Cup 3 Qualifying Round Chichester City Ladies 8 – 0 AFC Wimbledon
LAST WEEKEND saw the start of Chichester City Ladies FA cup campaign. Chichester entered the competition at the 3rd qualifying stage knowing a win would see them in the first round proper. AFC Wimbledon’s development squad were the opponents after winning in their previous two qualifying rounds. Chichester started the game slowly and were put under pressure by the ‘dons attacking players for the first 10 minutes of the game. The deadlock was finally broken on 18 minutes when a Chichester corner was not cleared and Lauren Cheshire put the ball in the net with a volley over the top of her head. After the restart Chichester continued their dominance and created several goal scoring opportunities
from both forward players and midfielders again the only thing missing was the finish. With the amount of chances being created by Chichester it was only a matter of time before the second goal came, Cheshire again came up with the goods scoring a fine volley with the outside of her boot after some excellent build up play throughout the Chichester midfield. Ambler, who was working tirelessly upfront, then had several chances to get on the score sheet herself but a combination of good goalkeeping and strong defending kept her at bay. On 37 minutes Ambler eventually got her reward for her efforts when she slotted the ball past the keeper after a precision through ball from the centre of midfield. Chichester went in at the break 3-0 up and were looking to build upon the fine attacking football they had shown in the first half. The second half began much as the first half had ended with Chichester enjoying the lion’s share of possession in the Wimbledon
half. Fowlie and Wride built on impressive first half displays in the middle and were combining well to create chances for the Chichester forwards. The fourth goal again came from Ambler with a great strike from the edge of the area that flew into the top right hand corner. Cheshire and Ambler soon completed their hat tricks and put Chichester 6-0 up. With Chichester six in front there was still no sign of them taking their foot off the gas. Starkey, a substitute for the impressive Symonds, scored Chichester’s seventh with a fine
individual effort, starting a run in her own half past several opponents and coolly placing the ball into the bottom corner of the net. t was then left to Ambler to get her fourth and Chichester’s eighth with a fierce shot from the right hand side, clipping the post as it went in. A fine Chichester performance and one that sees them into the next round of the FA cup where they will face Gloucester City Ladies at home on 1 December. The team are back to league duty this weekend and travel to the IOW to face Shanklin.
