St. Bernard’s / Lourdes Alumni SPRING NEWSLETTER 2017 Dear Lourdes Alumni, Greetings in Christ Jesus! I pray you are well. At the end of my first year as President of Lourdes, I would like to share with you some of the ways that God has blessed our school family with new and exciting initiatives. On the academic front, our Pre-School through Grade 12 teachers have been implementing strategies and resources obtained through the book, “The Art and Science of Teaching,” by Dr. Robert Marzano. Trainings on enhancing student relationships and engagement have been the focus for the school year. We have also instituted the John Baylor Prep for our freshmen, sophomore and junior classes in order to better prepare them for the ACT tests that are used for college admissions. We believe this additional preparation will help our students earn more scholarships to help offset the rising costs of college. We have also made crucial upgrades to our 1:1 iPad program that will enable our student to have access to the ever -changing world of technology and prepare them for a future of success. In addition, our Academic Decathlon Team placed first in the state –AGAIN, and our boys’ basketball team won the state championship—AGAIN. The basketball team is only the fourth D-1 team to go back-to-back since the class was created in 1983. GO KNIGHTS! On the Advancement front, we have successfully launched a three year Strategic Plan to ensure stable long-term funding. We will be successful in this area due to the many sacrifices made by our parents, donors, and alumni. As we continue to plan for the future, I am excited about all the many possibilities that are continuing to open up to us.

Additionally, we will soon be announcing our expanded Alumni board. We also launched the Knight Legacy Mission and our Annual Appeal this spring. Our Alumni Appeal last fall was very successfully, but will now become a part of the spring Annual Appeal. The Knight Legacy Mission and the Annual Appeal are crucial components to our Strategic Plan, and will ensure our ability to fund the operations of our school, especially in the area of Tuition Assistance. We have accomplished a lot this year, and the future at Lourdes is very bright. We are so blessed to have you as an important part of our school family. Please know that you and your family will continue to remain in my prayers, and I humbly beg that you keep me and our whole community in your prayers. Sincerely yours in Christ, Fr. Mark Cyza President

Big Changes for The Alumni Banquet Due to all of the exciting changes happening at Lourdes over the past school year, the annual alumni banquet will be postponed until next year! Look for more information to follow in the fall. Why not join us at the alumni golf outing instead!

attended Mass as a team the next day to show their gratitude to the Lord for their great season. A BIG THANK YOU TO THE ALUMNI The coaches, players & students would like to thank the alumni for their great support throughout the state basketball tournament. Your strong attendance and your enthusiastic support was very much a deciding factor in the outcome of the games. THANK YOU! GIRLS BASKETBALL Twenty one students along with Fr Miller, theology teacher at Lourdes and pastor of St. Joseph’s church at Paul, spent 6 days traveling to Washington, D.C. and attending the prolife march the end of January 2017. Bishop Conley of the Lincoln Diocese joined them for the picture.

The girls’ basketball team also had a great season. After winning two sub district games, they advanced to district finals only to lose to Meridian. It is the first time the girls have made it to district finals since the class of 2000. Way to go Lady Knights! “THE LITTLE MERMAID” 2017 LOURDES MUSICAL Under the direction of Ms. Lesley Gould, the musical “ The Little Mermaid” will be performed Friday, May 5th, at 7:00 PM, Saturday, May 6th at 7:00 PM & Sunday, May 7thst at 2:00 PM. Tickets are available at the door or on-line beginning April 24th at www.Tix.com. If you need assistance purchasing your tickets, please contact Lesley Gould at 402-713-9319. Hope to “sea” you there!

The boy’s basketball team accomplished a feat that puts them in the history book. No other team from St Bernard’s/Lourdes has won two straight State championships. In fact, Lourdes put itself on a short list of only four schools to have ever repeated as the Class D1 State Champions. The basketball team along with their coach, Joe Tynon,

James O’Neill ’13 In February James received his assignment for the next stage of seminary studies from Bishop Conley of the Diocese of Lincoln.
