Having completed the undergraduate and Graduate program of architecture at the University of Waterloo, I wish to pursue a career that will allow me to utilize and develop my creative abilities. Through the co-op internship and exchange programs, I have gained professional and academic experience both in Canadian and international contexts. My work reflects a range of design techniques as well as my exploration of the architectural world.

Diplômé du Baccalauréat et de la Maîtrise en Architecture de la faculté d’architecture de l’Université de Waterloo, j’aimerais poursuivre une carrière qui me permettra d’utiliser ma créativité et de la développer davantage. Grâce aux programmes de stages et d’échange, j’ai pu acquérir de l’expérience en milieu professionnel et académique au Canada et à l’étranger. Mes travaux reflètent un éventail de techniques de conception ainsi que mon exploration du monde de l’architecture.

Half a century of emigration from the Azores to North America has seen the abandonment and decay of many traditional houses throughout this Portuguese archipelago. Today, as members of the Azorean diaspora seek to return to their homeland, these ruined houses present a potent opportunity for renovation and reoccupation. Those who return, however, bring with them new domestic expectations and contemporary, urban needs at odds with the abandoned built fabric. Through an extensive photographic and qualitative survey of the over 1,600 abandoned buildings of the islands Terceira and Graciosa, and in-depth analysis of current conditions, historical precedents, and case-study design experiments, this thesis proposes a series of architectural principles and strategies for adapting these vernacular ruins to support the returning diaspora, while simultaneously restoring their spatial, material, and historical connection to traditional cultural practices for future generations. This design research tests vernacular architecture’s ability to adapt temporally and culturally, and exemplifi es a way of reconceiving building - and rebuilding – in the limited, cyclical context of island urbanism.

Meio século de emigração dos Açores para a América do Norte gerou o abandono e a degradação de muitas casas tradicionais por toda parte deste arquipélago português. Hoje, se os membros da diáspora açoriana procuram voltar às suas ilhas de origem, essas casas arruinadas representam uma forte oportunidade de renovação e reocupação. Aqueles que retornam, no entanto, trazem consigo novas exigências domésticas e necessidades urbanas contemporâneas em desacordo com o tecido construído abandonado. Através de um extenso levantamento fotográfi co e qualitativo sobre os mais de 1.700 edifícios abandonados das ilhas Terceira e Graciosa, e de análise aprofundada das condições atuais, precedentes históricos e experiências de design de estudo de caso, esta tese propõe uma série de princípios e estratégias arquitectónicas para adaptar essas ruínas vernáculas com vista a apoiar a diáspora que volta, ao mesmo tempo que devolve a sua conexão espacial, material e histórica às práticas culturais tradicionais para as gerações futuras. Esta pesquisa de design exemplifi ca uma maneira de repensar a construção – e a reconstrução - no contexto limitado e cíclico do urbanismo insular.

THE ARMADILLO PROVIDES AN EASY TO TRANSPORT SHELTER THAT ALLOWS, NOT ONLY FOR THE EXPERIENCED TRAVELLER BUT ANYONE SEEKING TO GET AWAY FROM EVERYDAY LIFE, BASIC SPACE FOR READING, WRITING, SLEEPING AND EATING. PROJECT: DESIGN A HOTEL FOR DOWNTOWN CAMBRIDGE, ONTARIO. THE HOTEL HAD TO ACCOMMODATE FIFTY ROOMS, A POOL AND SPA FACILITIES AS WELL AS AN INTERIOR LOBBY SPACE AND RESTAURANT.

PROJET: CONCEVOIR UN HÔTEL POUR LE CENTREVILLE DE CAMBRIDGE, EN ONTARIO. L’HÔTEL DEVAIT COMPORTER CINQUANTE CHAMBRES, UNE PISCINE ET UN SPA, AINSI QU’UN HALL DE RÉCEPTION INTÉRIEUR ET UN RESTAURANT.

THE CAMBRIDGE COURTYARD HOTEL IS DESIGN TO PROVIDE A MAIN PUBLIC OUTDOOR SPACE AND PRIVATE OUTDOOR SPACES FOR ITS GUESTS. THE MAIN COURTYARD ALLOWS FOR ACTIVITIES TO TAKE PLACE WITH THE GUEST AND HAS FIVE STOREY GREEN WALL AS MAIN FOCAL POINT. FURTHERMORE, THE THREE ROOM FLOOR PLATES ARE SHIFTED TO ALLOW FOR EACH ROOM TO HAVE A SUNLIT COURTYARD.

L’HÔTEL CAMBRIDGE COURTYARD EST CONÇU POUR OFFRIR UN ESPACE EXTÉRIEUR PRINCIPAL OUVERT AU PUBLIC AINSI QUE DES ESPACES EXTÉRIEURS PRIVÉS POUR LA CLIENTÈLE. LA COUR PRINCIPALE PERMET LA TENUE D’ÉVÉNEMENTS ET COMPORTE UN MUR VERT DE CINQ ÉTAGES COMME POINT FOCAL. DE PLUS, LES TROIS DERNIERS ÉTAGES DE CHAMBRES SONT DÉCALÉS AFIN QUE CHAQUE CHAMBRE POSSÈDE SA PROPRE COUR ENSOLEILLÉE.

“THIS STUDIO EXPLORES THE THEME OF HOUSING, AND LOOKS SPECIFICALLY AT THE MIXTURE OF TYPOLOGIES OBTAINED BY THE JUXTAPOSITION OF DIFFERENT VOLUMES. INSPIRED BY THE FIRST STUDIES CONDUCTED IN THE EARLY 20TH, SPECIFICALLY IN GERMANY, THE PROJECT STUDIES THE PRINCIPLE OF MISCHBEBAUUNG.”

“LE THÈME DE L’ATELIER EST LE LOGEMENT DANS LA PERSPECTIVE D’UNE MIXITÉ TYPOLOGIQUE OBTENUE PAR LA JUXTAPOSITION DE VOLUMES DIFFÉRENTS. THE HOUSING PROJECT IN SÉBEILLON MATERIALIZES THE THRESHOLD THAT IS THE PLATEAU OF SÉBEILLON BETWEEN THE CITY AND THE LAKE, THE UPPER AND THE LOWER. THE HIGH-RISE BUILDING STRETCHES OUT ALONG THE ARTERIAL ROAD TRACING OUT THE THRESHOLD AND PROJECTS ROWS OF HOUSES TOWARDS THE EDGE OF THE PARCEL. THE SPINE OF THE PROJECT IS A COLLECTIVE GREEN SPACE BETWEEN THE HIGH-RISE AND THE LOW-RISE. THE TRAIN STATION, CONVERTED INTO A FARMER’S MARKET IS IN ITSELF A MANIFESTATION OF A THRESHOLD BETWEEN THE CITY AND THE LAKE, HOLDING ON ONE SIDE A PUBLIC SQUARE AND ON THE OTHER SIDE, A PARK.

LE PROJET DE LOGEMENTS À SÉBEILLON MATÉRIALISE LE SEUIL QU’EST LE PLATEAU DE SÉBEILLON ENTRE LA VILLE ET LE LAC, LE BAS ET LE HAUT. LE FRONT BÂTI DE HIGH-RISE LONGE L’AXE ROUTIER ET REFERME LE PLATEAU, MARQUANT AINSI LE DÉBUT DU SEUIL ET PROJETTE LES RANGÉES DE MAISONS VERS LE BORD DE LA PARCELLE. L’ÉPINE DORSALE DU PROJET EST UN ESPACE COLLECTIF VERT ENTRE LE HIGH-RISE ET LE LOW-RISE. LA GARE, CONVERTIE EN MARCHÉ FERMIER, EST EN ELLE-MÊME UNE MANIFESTATION D’UN SEUIL ENTRE LA VILLE ET LE LAC, D’UN LIEU DE TRANSITION, EN TENANT D’UN CÔTÉ UNE PLACE PUBLIQUE ET DU CÔTÉ DU LAC, UN PARC.

GRAFTING PROJECT: LOCATED NEXT TO THE PORTA SAN SEBASTIANO - MUSEO DELLE MURA THE CASA-TORRE RECONSTRUCTS THE MEMORY OF WHAT WAS ONCE A DEFENCE TOWER OF THE AURELIAN WALLS. LA CASA-TORRE IS BUILT IN A CONDITION OF ‘IN-BETWEEN’: IN BETWEEN THE GATES OF SAN SEBASTIANO AND A NEARLY COMPLETE DEFENCE TOWER, IN BETWEEN THE INNER ROMAN CITY AND THE WORLD BEYOND THE WALLS, IN BETWEEN EARTH AND SKY. THESE CONDITIONS HAVE BEEN EMBRACED TO PROVIDE A WRITER WITH AN ENCLOSED SPACE THAT OPENS ONTO THE CITY AS WELL AS THE EXISTING PATH ON THE AURELIAN WALLS.

PROJET : GREFFE SITUÉE À COTÉ DE LA PORTA SAN SEBASTIANO - MUSEO DELLE MURA, LA CASA-TORRE RECONSTRUIT LA MÉMOIRE DE CE QUI FÛT UN JOUR UNE TOUR DE DÉFENSE DES MURS AURÉLIENS. LA CASA-TORRE EST CONSTRUITE DANS UNE SITUATION D’ENTRE-DEUX: ENTRE LA PORTE SAN SEBASTIANO ET UNE TOUR DE DÉFENSE INTACTE, ENTRE LA VILLE DE ROME ET LE MONDE EXTÉRIEUR, ENTRE LE CIEL ET LA TERRE. CES CONDITIONS PARTICULIÈRES ONT PERMIS DE DONNER LIEU À UN ESPACE FERMÉ QUI S’OUVRE SUR LA VILLE ROMAINE ET SUR LE PASSAGE EXISTANT SUR LES MURS AURÉLIENS.

INSPIRED BY THE VERNACULAR HOUSES OF ICELAND AND THE VOLCANIC STONE CONSTRUCTIONS OF THE AZORES, THE LODGE AT DREKI OFFERS TRAVELLERS COMING FROM GREAT DISTANCES THE SIMPLE COMFORTS AND SHELTER NEEDED IN A VERY HARSH VOLCANIC LANDSCAPE. THE PROJECT MAKES USE OF FUNDAMENTAL PASSIVE ENERGY STRATEGIES TO MAXIMIZE NATURAL DAYLIGHT AND HEATING ENERGY GAINS AS WELL AS PASSIVE VENTILATION. THE GEOTHERMAL STATION WILL PROVIDE FOR THE BUILDING’S ENERGY REQUIREMENTS AS WELL AS PHOTOVOLTAIC PANELS INTEGRATED INTO THE WEST, SOUTH AND EAST FAÇADES OF THE BUILDING. AT ITS ESSENCE, THE LODGE AT DREKI PROJECT USES THE IDEA OF THICK VERNACULAR STONE WALLS TRANSFORMED TO CREATE MODERN SPACES AND SUPPORT MODERN STRUCTURAL AND MECHANICAL SYSTEMS.

INSPIRÉ PAR LES MAISONS VERNACULAIRES DE L’ISLANDE ET LES CONSTRUCTIONS DE PIERRE VOLCANIQUES DES AÇORES, L’AUBERGE À DREKI OFFRE AUX VOYAGEURS AYANT PARCOURU DE GRANDES DISTANCES LES CONFORTS SIMPLES ET LA GITE NÉCESSAIRE DANS UN MILIEU VOLCANIQUE HOSTILE. LE PROJET MET EN ŒUVRE DES STRATÉGIES ÉNERGÉTIQUES PASSIVES AYANT COMME BUT DE MAXIMISER L’ACCÈS À LA LUMIÈRE NATURELLE ET LA RÉTENTION DE CHALEUR AINSI QUE LA VENTILATION NATURELLE. UNE STATION GÉOTHERMIQUE PRODUIRA L’ÉNERGIE ÉLECTRIQUE NÉCESSAIRE AU FONCTIONNEMENT DU COMPLEXE ET DES PANNEAUX SOLAIRES SERONT INTÉGRÉS DANS LES FAÇADES OUEST, SUD ET EST. ESSENTIELLEMENT LE COMPLEXE DE L’AUBERGE À DREKI S’INSPIRE DE L’UTILISATION DE LARGES MURS VERNACULAIRES EN PIERRE TRANSFORMÉS POUR CRÉER DES ESPACES MODERNES ET COMME SUPPORTS STRUCTURELS ET MÉCANIQUES.
