Sissejuhatus

Introduction

Näitus „KAHN. Saarlane“ on mõtteline jätk 2006. aastal Kuressaares peetud Louis Kahni päevadele. Nagu tookord esitame ka nüüd küsimusi arhitekti ja tema sünnipaiga seoste kohta. 2006. aastal toodi Riias asuvast Läti Riiklikust Ajalooarhiivist välja Kahni üllatuslik sünnidokument, mis on rahvusvahelistes publikatsioonides saanud tema elulookirjelduse osaks. Eestis on aga seejärel ilmunud kaks Kahnile pühendatud ajakirja erinumbrit: Ehituskunst nr 47/48, 2007 ja kunst.ee nr 1, 2012.

KAHN. The Islander is a conceptual sequel to the Kahn Days that took place in Kuressaare in 2006. As then, we are again posing questions about the connections between the architect and his birthplace. In 2006, Kahn’s surprising birth record was retrieved from the Latvian State Historical Archives in Riga, which has been included in Kahn’s biographies in international publications. After 2006, issues of two magazines have been dedicated to Kahn – Ehituskunst no. 47/48, 2007 and kunst.ee no. 1, 2012.

Ükski Louis Kahni arhitektuuriteos ei asu Euroopas. Küll aga on Euroopa vetes sõitnud tema projekteeritud kontserdilaev Point Counterpoint II (ehitatud 1976), mille ostmiseks Eesti riigile on pingutusi teinud nii Louis Kahni Eesti Sihtasutus kui ka Kahni sõbrad USA-s. See oleks põhimõtteliselt ainus võimalus tuua tema looming reaalselt Euroopasse ja tema sünnimaale.

None of Louis Kahn’s architectural works are located in Europe. But Point Counterpoint II, the concert ship designed by Kahn (built in 1976) has sailed in European waters. The Louis Kahn Estonia Foundation and Kahn’s friends in the U.S. have worked hard to buy the ship for the Estonia. The subject of Kahn started to be dealt with in Estonia during the Cold War, quite soon after his significance as a contemporary architect started to be noticed in the U.S. In 1967, engineer Tiit Masso, translated the monograph on Kahn by Vincent Scully Jr. published in 1962 into Estonian at his own initiative1. Scully’s book was part of the Makers of Contemporary Architecture series published in New York, which included works on Richard Buckminster Fuller, Philip Johnson, Eero Saarinen, and Kenzō Tange.

This was an extremely symbolic real-time recognition of Kahn.

Praegu võib kõrvuti panna Kahni essee „Form and Design“ (1960) kaks sõltumatut eestikeelset tõlget: Tiit Masso variant 1967. aastast (pealkiri „Vorm ja kujundus“) ning Epp Aareleiu tõlge ajakirjas Ehituskunst 47/48, 2007 (pealkiri „Vorm ja kavand“). Kahe vastandliku ühiskonnaparadigma tingimustes tehtud tõlget ühest ja samast tekstist võiks olla huvitav võrdlevalt analüüsida nii keeleliselt kui ka terminoloogiliselt.

It could be interesting to make a comparative analysis – both linguistically and terminologically – of the two translations made under conditions of two such diametrically opposed social paradigms.

Yet, the question of Kahn’s birthplace is still perturbing. Was he really born in Pärnu as the document found in 2006 indicates? Or in Kuressaare, which was the accepted truth during previous decades; or even on a boat so that the birth was only recorded in Pärnu as the most important local administrative center? Also perturbing is the question regarding the connection between the Kahn’s birthplace or beginnings and his architecture.

In short, this is the core of the analysis in this exhibition and catalogue. .

However, which authors and researchers can we rely on in a situation where there is little archival material pertaining to the earliest period of Kahn’s life, and therefore there is little interest among international researchers in this period?

The art historian Michael Lewis, who has consistently analyzed Kahn’s early period, has searched for the footprints of Kahn’s travels and the dotted lines connecting the few definite facts in this diffused landscape. In his writings to date, he has not had any reason to mention Kuressaare.

The newest anthology Louis Kahn – The Power of Architecture appeared in 20123 concurrently with a large exhibition of the same name, which is continuing to travel through important architectural institutions in Europe and the U.S. By the spring of 2016, the exhibition will have arrived at the Bellevue Arts Museum in the State of Washington in the

Louis Kahn was very succinct when talking about his origins: he came from an island, with a castle. “Kahn’s castle” – the bishopric castle or the Kuressaare Castle as it is popularly known – exists. The structure is located on the territory of the Republic of Estonia, on an island called Saaremaa, in a town called Kuressaare. It dates back to the 14th century. It has survived in extremely good condition. It represents the late Gothic style of architecture. Its floor plan is that of a convent building.

It is built of local dolomite. The façade has two towers – the more slender Tall Herman watchtower and the stockier defensive Sturvolt tower.8 The corners of the older Sturvolt tower are straight, but the corners of the Tall Hermann tower, which was built later, are rounded. The medieval bishopric castle is surrounded by bastions and moats filled with water, which date back to the 16th—17th centuries.

However, it is ironic that during the Soviet era “Kahn’ castle” was actually built into something that could be called a fairy tale. Between 1970 and 1985 a massive “renovation” took place in the Kuressaare bishopric castle10, during which the exterior of the structure was reconstructed and work was carried out on the inside. Kalvi Aluve, the architect that designed the reconstruction, based it on drawings made in Kuressaare in the early 20th century, in 1907, by Hermann Seuberlich. And Seuberlich, in turn, had based his drawings on unpublished drawings from 1688 in the Swedish Military Archives.11 Thus, during the 1970s, crenelation was added to the top of the Kuressaare Castle’s walls and a crenelated collar was added to the Tall Hermann tower. “In some ways, K. Aluve’s activity in Kuressaare could be compared to Viollet-le-Duc and Boeswillwald’s activity at the Castle of Carcassonne in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, or the restoration work conducted by Petrus Josephus Hubertus Cuypers, known as the Dutch Viollet-le-Duc, on the Kasteel de Haar,” writes Jaan Tamm.12 Kahn made drawings of the Castle of Carcassonne along with its crenelated wall in 1951 in France13, but this is castle architecture that belongs to a different school in a Niisiis kannab Kuressaare monumentaal- totally different country.

Arhitekti ja fotokunstniku Arne Maasiku kogemuse põhjal on selle linnuse fassaadi pildistamine mitmel põhjusel keerukas protsess: hoov on kitsas, ehitis massiivne ja fotograafil vähe taganemisruumi. Sajandi algul möödus Kahni varajane lapsepõlv Öseli saarel Arensburgi linnas Tsaari-Venemaa impeeriumis. Suvel 1928 külastas noor arhitekt Kahn Euroopaturnee alguses enda väitel ka kodusaart.

Sel ajal kehtisid seal Eesti Vabariigi kohanimed Saaremaa ja Kuressaare.

Pärast Teist maailmasõda nimetati Nõukogude Liidus linn taas ümber – seekord eesti punarevolutsionääri Viktor Kingissepa auks Kingissepaks. Täpselt sama nimi anti Nõukogude Liidus veel teisele linnale, mida ajalooliselt teatakse kui Jamburgi (vene keeles Ivangorod, eesti keeles Jaanilinn) ja mis asub Venemaa territooriumil, teisel pool Narva piirijõge.

Külma sõja lõpu ja Eesti Vabariigi taastamise järel muudeti Saaremaa linna nimi tagasi Kuressaareks.

Nime sage vahetumine on märk poliitilistest tõmbetuultest. Geopoliitiline keerukus ongi objektiivselt olnud selle piirkonna pidev konstant läbi aegade – keskajal ja hiljem. Miks muidu on terve Eesti territoorium kaetud keskaegse linnusearhitektuuriga? Ka keskaegsed kristlikud kirikud ehitati paksude müüridega kaitsekirikuteks.

Based on the experience of Arne Maasik, who is an architect and photographer, photographing the castle’s façade is difficult for several reasons. The courtyard is narrow; the structure is massive; and there is little room for the photographer to back up. The façade can only be photographed in overcast weather.15 The research on the history of the castle’s construction is also related to the “restoration work” conducted between 1970 and 1985, and is therefore based on the defective methodology16 of a closed society. New extensive field research on the castle territory was started in 2010 under the direction of Garel Püüa17 and is ongoing, therefore the process of correcting the historical writing on the castle continues.

Viewed from America, the frequent changes of the place names on the world map during the 20th century, caused by the changes in political regimes, forces the bishopric castle to be silent. In the early 20th century, Kahn’s early childhood was spent on the island of Ösel in the town of Arensburg, in the Tsarist Russian Empire. According to the young architect himself, he visited his home island while on a tour of Europe in the summer of 1928. At that time, in the Republic of Estonia, the place names Saaremaa and Kuressaare applied. After World War II in the Soviet Union, the town was renamed Kingissepa, in honour of Viktor Kingisepp, an Estonian Communist revolutionary. Exactly the same name was also given to another town in the Soviet Union, which is known historically as Jamburg (Ivangorod in Russian and Jaanilinn in Estonian); the town is on the other side of the Narva River and now in the territory of Russia. At the end of the Cold War, and after the restoration of the Republic of Estonia, the name of the town in Saaremaa was changed back to Kuressaare.

The frequent name changes are a sign of the political winds. And geopolitical complexity has objectively been a constant in this region throughout time – in the Middle Ages as well as later on. Why else would the entire territory of Estonia be covered with medieval castle architecture? And even the medieval Christian churches were built with thick walls to be fortress churches.

When researching Kahn’s work, architectural scholars relate minimally to medieval architecture. This is confirmed once more by Kenneth Frampton’s expected negative answer to a question about the possible connections between Kahn and medieval architecture.19

In his often quoted and referenced work “Monumentality” (1944), Kahn’s analysis of medieval architecture is rather pejorative – “Gothic architecture relying on basically simple construction formulas derived from experience and the material available, could only go so far. Lewis has chosen to make a separate analysis of Kahn’s two drawings that depict a medieval fortress in Italy with two towers, which Lewis believes may have influenced his work. He brings Kahn’s design for a Lenin monument in 1933, which has two symmetrical towers, as an example.23 However, the “Scottish castle” is generally recognised to have had an impact on the girls’ dormitory at Bryn Mawr College designed by Kahn. And in architectural literature, the term “Scottish castle” which comes from the architect himself is used, without the era being defined.

Are we dealing here with medieval architecture?

Kahn was silent when it came to concretising his childhood castle and generalised it into the keyword “castle.”

Starting and the beginning are part of Kahn’s rhetoric, his “language”. This can be interpreted in many ways. At the abstract-historical level, the beginning of architecture can be dated from the Egyptian pyramids and the architectural legacy of Europe’s earliest cultures, which Kahn studied and drew and painted during his travels. At the concrete level (the start of building design), Kahn proceeded from his own methods and way of thinking. At a personal level, becoming an architect was apparently a complicated and multistage process of constant analysis and synthesis, assisted by the image bank that constantly enriched his visual memory.

According to Olavi Pesti, the local history expert at the Saaremaa Museum, Arensburg had no Jewish congregation which is why the births were recorded on the mainland in Pärnu, the largest town in the vicinity26. In the early 20th century, the population of Arensburg (i.e. Kuressaare) was comprised of 63% Estonians, 26% German, 9% Russians and a fourth group, the Jews who numbered fewer than one hundred.27 Knowing the local conditions, of the three possibilities, Pärnu seems to be the least likely birthplace.

Tööde esimene etapp kestis aastail 1904—1906. Järgiti kõigiti tol ajal Saksamaal heakskiidetud muinsuskaitseprintsiipe.28 Alustati piiskopilinnuse vanimast osast, Sturvolti tornist, mis osutus tollal katusekõrguseks ja visuaalselt kuidagi vigaseks või ebaproportsionaalseks.

Anne Tyng toob esile monumentaalse linnuse mõju lapse psüühikale: „Loss pidi olema graveeritud viieaastase poisi mällu, olles muljetavaldavalt suur ja domineerides peamiselt ühe-, kahekorruseliste hoonetega väikelinna üle.“30 Kõrvalepõikena saab tuua psühholoogilise paralleeli mandril üles kasvanud sama põlvkonna arhitektiga. Võrumaalt pärit Arnold Matteus (1897—1986) räägib oma elumuutvast episoodist nelja-viie aasta vanusena. Ta mäletab, kuidas ema viis ta ühel pühapäeval Urvaste kirikusse, mis on keskaegne monumentaalne Eesti ainus maabasiilika. Metsade vahel kasvanud poisile tundus ehitis juba kaugelt „nii võimas ja nii kaunis“, kohapeal lisandus muljele orelimäng ja akendest tulvav päikesevalgus. Sellest ajast alates unistas Arnold Matteus arhitektiks saamisest.31 Kahni teine kokkupuude Kuressaarega oli tema enda sõnul 1928. aastal. Pennsylvania Ülikooli lõpetanud noor mees alustas oma pikka 1928.—1929. aasta Euroopa-õppereisi Londonist, sõites läbi Põhjamaade Tallinna ja sealt edasi Riiga. Namely, in 1904, the Saaremaa Knighthood commissioned a renovation from two members of the Riga Architects Society – the architect and art historian Wilhelm Neumann, who had previously worked on Estonia’s medieval castles, and Hermann Seuberlich, who did fieldwork and planning locally. The objective was to adapt the Kuressaare Castle as 0ffices for the Saaremaa Knighthood.

The first stage of the work was executed between 1904 and 1906. All the principles of heritage protection accepted in Germany were observed.28 The work was started in the oldest portion of the bishopric castle – the Sturvolt tower – the top of which was even with the roofline at that time, and seemed somehow visually disproportionate. Thus, an additional story and a half was added to the Sturvolt tower29, thereby making the façade more balanced and the towers more or less the same height.

In 1904 Louis Kahn was three years old.

Anne Tyng points out the impact of the monumental castle on the child’s psyche: “The castle must have been etched in the memory of a boy of five with its impressive scale dominating the small town almost entirely of one- and two-story buildings.” 30 An aside. A psychological parallel can be pointed out with an architect of the same generation who grew up on the mainland. Arnold Matteus (1897—1986) who came from Võrumaa, South Estonia, talks about a life-changing episode when he was 4 or 5 years old. He remembers how, on Sundays, his mother would take him the Urvaste Church (a monumental medieval church that is Estonia’s only rural basilica). To the boy who had grown up surrounded by forests the structure seemed “so grand and so beautiful” even from afar, and once inside, this impression was enhanced by the organ music and sunshine flooding in from the windows. Arnold Matteus said he dreamed of becoming an architect from that time, when he was 4 or 5 years old.31 Kahn’s other contact with Kuressaare occurs, according to the architect himself, in 1928. The young man who had graduated from the University of Pennsylvania set out on his long study trip through Europe, which lasted from 1928 to 1929, from London. He travelled through Scandinavia to Tallinn and from there to Riga. Anne Tyng writes that in 1928 the young Kahn spent almost a month – from mid-July to mid-August –

According to the passport stamps, the period in question was 19 July to 17 August 1928.33 Geographically, the easiest access to Kuressaare is by boat from Riga. According to Saaremaa historian Olavi Pesti, the ship traffic between Riga and Kuressaare was activated in 1875 and intensified starting in 1894.34 Anne Tyng also says, “at that time the most popular way to travel to Saaremaa was by boat from Riga”.35 The Louis Kahn Estonia Foundation has been unable to find any passenger lists in the archives that include Kahn’s name. However, this does not mean that the architect did not make the journey. The discrepancies between documentary inadequacy and actual events are vividly revealed by the fact that Kahn’s passport does not contain an Estonian visa or stamp36, and yet, an archival document confirms that Kahn was on Estonian territory in 192837.

What did the young architect Kahn do in Kuressaare for a month? All of this is also supported by the teachings of Professor Paul Cret, who made an impact on Kahn at the University of Pennsylvania. The neo-classicist Cret expressed his architectural principles in his essay “Modern Architecture” published in 1923. In Cret’s approach to architecture, Alexandra Tyng considers continuity and consistency to be important from Kahn’s point of view. Let’s repeat it in this context as well: Most striking was Cret’s sense of the continuity of architecture. He believed that there were certain principles inherent in architecture that remained constant through its history, and he considered the permanence of ancient monuments praiseworthy. /---/ Cret believed in what he called the „legacy of the past,“ that a seeming stylistic revolution was, in retrospect, only a slight change from what preceded it. 39

Kuressare is a convent-type castle, which dates back to the 2nd half of the 14th century.

Mida tähendab konvendihoone? See on ruudukujulise põhiplaaniga linnus, mille keskel asub ruudukujulise põhiplaaniga siseõu. Siseõue ümber on koondunud neli hoonetiiba, millel on kindel ruumiprogramm (kabel, kapiitlisaal, refektoorium ehk söögituba, dormitoorium ehk magamistuba jm). What is a convent building? It is a castle with a square floor plan and a square courtyard in the middle. The four wings of the building are assembled around the courtyard, each with a specific purpose (chapel, chapter house, refectory or dining hall, dormitory or bedroom, etc.).

One does not pass through the rooms, they are connected by a gallery or cloister on the side facing the courtyard.

Kuressaare linnuse ehitas oma residentsiks Saare-Lääne piiskop. Castles with convent buildings spread throughout the territory conquered by the Teutonic Order. This type of castle originated in Prussia in the period from 1280 to 1330, with its centre in Marienburg (currently Malbork in northern Poland), and arrived in Old Livonia, i.e. today’s Estonia and Latvia, in the 14th century. The castle type is based on the extremely strict way of life adopted by the Catholic order of monks.40 It was a totally male world – emphatically harsh architecture built by men exclusively for men.41 The Kuressaare Castle was built as the residence of the Bishop of Ösel-Wiek.

According to Kaur Alttoa, a researcher of medieval architecture, the bishop primarily based the architecture on the example of the local power centre of the Teutonic Order – the Viljandi Castle. The Viljandi convent building had been built during the 1st half of the 14th century and was the largest in Old Livonia – the sides of the walls measured ca. 55 meters42 (now destroyed). In comparison, the sides of the Kuressaare convent building were ca.

43 meters long.43 The master builders of the Kuressaare Castle came from Czech territory (not Prussia, as was the case with the Teutonic Order).44 It is not impossible that it was built by the same masters as those who built the Emmaus Monastery in Prague in 1347 for Charles IV – some of its elements and details are identical to the Kuressaare Castle, according to the researchers Kaur Alttoa and Garel Püüa.45 The bishopric castle in Kuressaare was built primarily of local Saaremaa dolomite. This grey rock is extremely easy to work immediately after it is quarried, and hardens later after it comes in contact with air. The quality of the stonework comprised of hewn dolomite blocks is excellent.46

Kuressaare Castle continued to be fortified in the 16th and 17th centuries. The construction of the bastions was undertaken by the Danes from the 1580s to 1640s, and continued by the Swedes in the 1670s. The castle underwent a general modernization between 1684 and 1710. Nevertheless, in 1710, the Swedish garrison surrendered the fortifications to the Russian forces without putting up any resistance.

Up to seven castles with convent buildings were built on Estonian territory.47 If we include the simpler square fortcastles and numerous Christian fortified churches and towers, one can see that this land was strategically and geopolitically important.

Kahni elutöö, Bangladeshi Rahvusassamblee hoone (1962—1982) projekti keerukuse aste on juba sedavõrd kõrge, et hoone on projekteeritud ilma rangete nurkadeta, koosnedes justkui omavahel kokkupandud geomeetrilistest üksustest.

Kahni üks rangemaid kloostriarhitektuuri näiteid on Pennsylvanias Bryn Mawri Kolledžile ehitatud tütarlaste ühiselamu, mis telliti arhitektilt 1960. aastal. Nevertheless, Kahn includes certain surprises in the designs with repetitive squares – especially in connection with the corner solutions. If, for military purposes, the medieval convent building was a closed fortress reinforced with strong corner towers, then Kahn’s thoughts moved in the opposite direction – from separation to openness. This can be interpreted as Kahn’s silent dissatisfaction with the severe monumental architecture that was built by men, exclusively for men. Kahn invented various ways of opening up the corners of the buildings – for example, there are no corners along the entire length of the Exeter Library façade. In the Trenton Bath House, the roof is supported by corners, creating an illusion that the roof is floating above the walls. In the Hurva Synagogue project, the conceptualized corner towers have become a “negative” and are totally lacking.

The degree of complexity in Kahn’s life’s work, the Bangladesh National Assembly building (1962—1982), is so great that the building is designed without rigid corners, as if it were comprised of assembled geometric components.

One of the most severe examples of convent architecture is the girls’ dormitory built for Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania, which was commissioned from the architect in 1960. The floor plan of the structure, is comprised of three squares, and approaches the spatial logic of the convent building. In the interior of the building, bare grey concrete dominates, just as harsh as medieval Saaremaa dolomite that has been toughened by the centuries. The nature of the entire Bryn Mawr project contradicts the spiritual reality induced by commerce and bourgeois wellbeing. An unexpected solution for the U.S. in the second half of the 20th century. Alexandra Tyng: “Kahn believed that this arrangement was an expression of the form, or essence, of Dormitory.”48 From here we arrive at light. Alggeomeetria on visualiseeritud matemaatika ja sellisena universaalne. Geomeetrilisi kujundeid peavad seetõttu enda omaks väga erinevad ajastud ja kultuurid ning täiesti vastandlikud filosoofia- ja religioonisüsteemid. Lahtiseks jääb küsimus, mis tingimustel on geomeetrilised kujundid lihtsalt need, mis nad on, vabad mistahes vaimsustest. Ja mis kontekstis kinnistub neile kujunditele teatud vaimne või religioosne tähendus koos kaasneva mõjuga? Kuidas suhestus selle teemaga Kahn?

Through the centuries, the simpler basic geometry shapes, such as the square, circle, triangle, etc. or the cube, pyramid, sphere, tetrahedron etc. have proven to be the “building stones” of the universal visual language of art and architecture.

Basic geometry is visualized mathematics and as such universal. Therefore, geometric shapes are claimed as “one’s own” by very different eras and cultures, as well as diametrically opposed philosophical and religious systems. It is an open question when geometric shapes are nothing more than that, i.e. not connected to spirituality. And in what context is spiritual or religious meaning, with its concurrent influences, attached to a geometric shape? How did Kahn relate to this topic?

In the anthology Louis Kahn: The Power of Architecture Eeva-Liisa Pelkonen deals with Kahn’s years at Yale University from 1947 to 1957, when his fellow faculty members Josef and Anni Albers introduced him to the Bauhaus and German modernist architectural thought.

The researcher draws parallels between Kahn’s architecture and Albers series of painting called Homage to the Square, where the motif of squares set inside each other is repeated in various colour combinations. The article ends with the thought that the Yale University Art Gallery (1951—1953) was “the first of Kahn’s buildings to explore geometry as the underlying principle of architecture in a manner that echoes Bauhaus principles”.54

However, if we want to claim that there is something strange about Kahn’s visual “language” compared to 20th-century modernist architecture, we should point to the Phillips Exeter Academy Library.

The floor plan is a square and it generally follows the spatial plan of a convent building. The building itself is almost a cube – the sides are 33 meters long and 24 meters high55. A huge structure is installed in the ceiling, which is based on a square and cross. The cross exactly fits into the square. And there are nine smaller squares behind it.

Standing in the middle of the building and looking up, we basically see the same thing that exists in a smaller scale in the chapter house of the Kuressaare Castle or any other Gothic cathedral around the world – a vault in the shape of a cross. In the case of a groin vault, the “groins” protrude from the vault. Kahn’s cross can be interpreted as a massive modernist and abstracted version of a medieval groin vault, but without the vault.

It was built of concrete, a modernist building material typical of 20th-century architecture. The cross in the ceiling is not decorative, its function seems to be to receive the “direct sunlight” flooding in

The number three is significant in Christian theology. Erwin Panofsky writes about the architecture of the Gothic cathedrals, which are constructed like a medieval tract – according to their homological parts and the system of these parts. A Gothic cathedral is comprised of a ternary division, in which the whole consists of all the smallest components.

The same thing is repeated in each groin vault, which is divided into four parts, of which the surface expanse is triangular and each triangle shares its sides with its neighbours. Analogous relations are preserved between the parts and the whole. 56

We can also see triangles as the pediments of church portals. A good example from the medieval architectural school of Saaremaa is the Valjala Church, with a portal surrounded by a pediment, i.e. the triangle is clearly outlined on the western façade.

Enigmatic triangles, which tower above the rectangles, are repeated on the exterior of Kahn’s Bangladesh National Assembly building. However, these are not portals – water stretches before the shapes, doubling the geometry in the reflection. The geometry seemed to have been purged of any symbolism.

Rose windows – the giant stained glass windows that classify images with theological meaning – are located in the middle of the western façades of Gothic cathedrals. A rose window has symbolic meaning that is both publicly manifesting, as well as hidden. For the viewer, this effect reveals itself at a spiritual, meditative and emotional level.

A round window is also an almost mandatory element in the stylebook of functionalist architecture.

Monumental circular openings occur in many of Kahn’s buildings, opening up the buildings from both the inside and outside. They seem to represent basic geometry, going back to the beginning, to where architecture gets its start and to the human need to be protected while also being able to survey one’s surroundings.

Näitus „KAHN. Saarlane“ Kuressaare linnuses suunab pilgu esmalt tagasi Saaremaa keskaegsele arhitektuurile ja siis edasi selle võimalikule seosele Kahni loominguga. Kontseptsioon küpses peaaegu kümme aastat, kuni lõpuks on näitus saanud teoks tänu Kahni Tallinna-sõprade ringi üha kasvavale veendumusele, et Kuressaare linnuse hüpoteesi57 tasub Kahniga seoses edasi arendada.

KAHN. The Islander at the Kuressaare Castle initially directs one’s gaze back to the medieval architecture of Saaremaa and from there to its possible connections to Kahn’s architecture. The concept has matured over almost ten years, and the exhibition finally became a reality thanks to the increasing conviction of a group of Kahn’s friends in Tallinn that the hypothesis of the Kuressaare Castle57 deserves to be developed further.

Näituse „KAHN. Saarlane“ väljapanekus on valik autentseid fotosid. Kaks neist on siiski läbinud suurema fototöötluse. Ajaloolane ja graafiline disainer Mart Kivisild viis linnuse fassaadi ja kapiitlisaali visuaali kujuteldavalt tagasi seisu, nagu see võis olla 20. sajandi alguses ehk enne 1970. aastate „renoveerimist“. And he continued with a new round of photographing in 2015 commissioned by the Louis Kahn Estonia Foundation, focusing on the architecture of the medieval Christian fortress churches in Saaremaa. Thus a high-quality photo archive of Saaremaa’s medieval fortress architecture got its start.

KAHN. The Islander includes a selection of authentic photos. But two of them have undergone photo editing. Historian and graphic designer Mart Kivisild conceptually restored the visuals of the castle’s façade and chapter house back to the way they could have been in the early 20th century, or before the “renovations” were carried out in the 1970s. He used authentic archival photos from the early 20th century as the basis for comparison.

Thus, on these two photos the crenellation has been removed from the upper portion of the wall. The Tall Herman tower has been freed of its crenelated collar. The shape of Tall Herman’s spire at the beginning of the 20th century has been restored. The pseudo-medieval drawbridge system has been removed from the castle’s façade. The flagpole in front of the castle has also been taken away. In the interior view, the cannonball-shaped lamp hanging from a chain in front of the window has been removed. The sign glued to the wall has been eliminated. The smoke detector has been erased from the ceiling.

After the foreign bodies were removed, the castle itself came to the fore, as it probably was when a 3-year-old boy saw it in 1904. Considering the boy’s

In February 2016, photographer Arne Maasik and art historian Tanel Murre flew to the U.S. to photograph Kahn’s buildings in New York, New Hampshire, Philadelphia, Trenton and Bryn Mawr, “through a Kuressaare filter”.

As a further illustration, a 3D model of the Phillips Exeter Academy Library, with its floor plan reminiscent of a convent building, has also been installed in the Kuressaare Castle.

In summary, what is most significant about this exhibition project?

Most significant is the aspiration to learn Louis Kahn’s language and vocabulary.

And the language and vocabulary of Saaremaa’s medieval fortress architecture. The aspiration to interpret cultures and epochs. To free the Kuressaare Castle of its excess baggage. To view Kahn’s work through the Kuressaare Castle filter. To view the Kuressaare Castle through the filter of Kahn’s architecture. To overcome provinciality. To follow a Kahn-centered line throughout.

To honor medieval architecture and to honor Kahn.

And finally, the goal is to position the Kuressaare Castle as the missing link in the current mosaic of Kahn interpretation.

Synthesizing thought was characteristic of Louis Kahn. As someone who perceived, who experienced, he searched for the spirit of architecture. Religiosity as an experience was more important to him than formal training. At this point, let’s also proceed from a Kahn-style synthesis, by looking for the components that can take us from meaningful reticence to considered speech.

Heie Treier PhD on kunstiajaloolane ja kunstikriitik, Tallinna Ülikooli Balti filmi, meedia, kunstide ja kommunikatsiooni instituudi õppejõud. Ta kaitses 2004. aastal Eesti Kunstiakadeemias doktoritöö eesti varamodernistlikust kunstist ning Karl Pärsimäe (1902—1942) maalidest. Tema Kahni huvi sai alguse 2006. aastal, kui ta läks ajakirja kunst.ee peatoimetajana Kuressaarde Kahni päevadele, et koguda materjale ajakirjas avaldamiseks. Esialgsest lihtsast ideest sai aga kümme aastat kestev väljakutse, mis viis ta 2007. aastal Philadelphiasse Kahni arhiivi, milliste materjalide põhjal ilmus 2012. aastal kunst.ee Kahni erinumber. Käesolev uurimus ja näitus sai valmida tänu koostööle arhitekti Toivo Tammikuga, fotograafi Arne Maasikuga, projektijuhi Ingrid Mald-Villandiga, graafilise disaineri Martin Pedanikuga ja produtsendi Ott Rätsepaga, kelle panus teemale kaasa mõtlemisel oli oluline.

Heie Treier PhD is an art historian and art critic, and member of the faculty at the Baltic Film, Media, Arts and Communication School of Tallinn University. She defended her PhD thesis on early modernist art and the paintings of Karl Pärsimägi (1902—1942) at the Estonian Academy of Arts in 2004. Her interest in Kahn got its start in 2006, when as the editor-in-chief of kunst.ee magazine, she attended the Kahn Days in Kuressaare to gather material for the magazine. The initial simple assignment turned into a ten-year journey that first brought her to the Kahn Archives in Philadelphia in 2007. Based on the materials gathered there, a special issue of kunst. ee dedicated to Kahn appeared in 2012. Collaboration with architect Toivo Tammik, photographer Arne Maasik, manager Ingrid Mald-Villand, graphic designer Martin Pedanik and producer Ott Rätsep has made a significant contribution to the research and to this exhibition.

Arne Maasik on arhitekti haridusega fotograaf ja kunstnik. Tema kunstnikukarjäär sai koos uue põlvkonna kunstnikega alguse 1995. aastal ambitsioonikal Saaremaa biennaalil, mis toimus Kuressaare lossis.

Arne Maasik on üks nõutumaid arhitektuurifotograafe Eestis. Ta on osalenud pikaajalistes projektides seoses mahukate teaduskäsitlustega ning samas teinud arvukalt isiknäitusi Tallinnas, Helsingis, Roomas, Veneetsias, Berliinis, Moskvas jm. Arne Maasiku kunstnikukäekirja iseloomustab metafüüsiliste allhoovuste tabamine ja leebe poeesia. Tema huvi fookuses kunstnikuna on niihästi suurlinnad kui ka agulid, vanad majad ja võsad, muidu perifeerne elukeskkond, mis muutub fotodel hingestatuks ja elusaks.

Arne Maasik is a photographer and artist with an education in architecture. His career as an artist started in 1995 along with a new generation of artists at the ambitious Saaremaa Biennial that took place at the Kuressaare Castle. Arne Maasik is one of the architectural photographers most in demand in Estonia.

He has participated in long-term projects involving large-scale research and had numerous solo exhibitions in Tallinn, Helsinki, Rome, Venice, Berlin, Moscow and elsewhere. Arne Maasik’s work is characterised by an awareness of metaphysical undercurrents and muted poetry. As an artist his focus is on metropolises as well as their outskirts, old houses and the underbrush, as well as other peripheral living environment that become animated and come alive on his photos.
