FROM THE

Our Changing

Demographics In

Colorado, the population of those aged 50-plus is expected to be 31 percent by 2040, with a total economic contribution of approximately 40 percent, according to a report by Oxford Economics and AARP. And a recent survey conducted by life insurance company Haven Life places Colorado 10th on the list of top places for early retirement. In Broomfield, our senior population increases each year and is expected to reach 28 percent by 2020. This month we feature several articles that reflect topics important to seniors, the people who love and care for aging adults, and a few thoughts for all of us as we look to our own maturity and future finances. See pages 20-25. Coupled with many great services offered by the City of Broomfield, in our community we are fortunate to have a great organization focused on meeting unmet needs of seniors in need of various forms of assistance. Senior Resources of Broomfield (SRB) helps seniors through nutrition programs, including Meals on Wheels, and community resource programs, such as loans of medical equipment, caregiver respite, and funding for hearing aids and dental work. SRB actively partners with the City of Broomfield’s Senior Services Department to connect with Broomfield seniors and provide vital financial support for urgent needs – enhancing the quality of life of Broomfield’s seniors. As I write this I am still smiling from attending the SRB Broomfield Days Street Dance which was a super fun event held in September to raise money for the organization. If you were not there, you missed an amazing night! Hats off to the SRB team for organizing and hosting this unique community-building event! The Broomfielder™ magazine is proud to be one of your partners. To learn more about SRB and how you can help visit www.BroomfieldSeniorResources.org.

Nominate Your Angel in Broomfield Do you know someone who selflessly gives to the community? Do you have a friend who you admire for their commitment to a cause or organization? Does your friend help others in the neighborhood and simply make their own corner of the world a better place? Is there someone who inspires you with their generosity of time, treasure or talent? We are looking for those quiet, unsung local angels who embody giving and deserve a round of thanks. We will feature as many short appreciations as space allows in the November issue. Inclusion will be determined by The Broomfielder™ magazine staff. Please see page 37 for submission details.

Thanks for reading,

Tina Eichner, Editor Correction: In September we published the date incorrectly for the upcoming Broomfield Trails Marathon. The first ever Broomfield-located marathon is sponsored by The Broomfield Rotary Club will be November 4. For full details and to register visit www.broomfieldmarathon.com.

Documentation is an important part of almost every aspect of our world today. We rely on powers of attorney, Wills and trusts to provide direction upon our disability or death. But we should not rely on documentation alone. The type of documents we have will not ensure an effective transition upon our disability or death. Even the best document from a legal technical perspective will fail if we don’t do these key things: The documents must be designed through personalized counseling. Your family is different than every other family and you have different goals, dreams, aspirations, and relationships that cannot be properly addressed through standardized forms. You must properly title your assets so they can be captured by your estate plan. If your assets bypass the instructions you prepared, your documents are worthless. You must update your documentation on a regular basis. Changes in the legal environment and in your personal situation can have a drastic effect on the outcome of your plan. Your family should control the process on your disability or death. Not only should you be organized so that they are not scrambling to put your affairs in order, but they should know what to do, how to do it, and how they should pay for any assistance they need. Preparing your family for the inevitable ensures things will go more smoothly.

CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) of Adams & Broomfield Counties will host its annual Light of Hope event and share the impact the organization is having in the community, including a mission moment highlighting former CASA Youth and their CASA Volunteer Advocates at Stonebrook Manor in Thornton on October 18. Guests can attend a free breakfast from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. or a luncheon from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. There is no fee to attend; however, guests will be encouraged to make a financial contribution to support

CASA and its mission. Funds raised from the event help support CASA’s mission to provide specially selected and trained community volunteers, or CASAs, to advocate for abused and neglected children in the pursuit of safe and permanent homes. The volunteerbased, nonprofit organization trains and supervises community volunteers to represent the best interests of child victims of physical, sexual or emotional abuse and neglect. Volunteer advocates are appointed by judges to be a voice for these children in court, eventually ensuring children are placed into safe, loving homes where they can thrive. CASA of Adams & Broomfield Counties serves more than 500 abused and neglected children in need of a caring CASA Volunteer Advocate. To RSVP for the breakfast or luncheon, or to make a financial contribution, please contact Anne Kerlin at anne@casa17th.com or at 303-835-5540, or visit casa17th.org to learn more.

Community Support Helps Broomfield FISH Grow to Meet Increasing Demands

Broomfield FISH is not only a thriving food pantry, the 501c3 also provides critical transportation assistance, rent and utility assistance, and numerous other services to Broomfield families and individuals in need. Since 1963 and throughout the past 55 years, FISH has grown into a vital community resource, serving approximately 6,000 people each year.

D

id you know 48% of the people FISH helps are children under the age of 18? Or that the cost of living in Broomfield has skyrocketed to the point where FISH families are spending 80% of their total income just on housing? Or that many seniors on a fixed income have to choose between purchasing needed medicines and food? To address such needs and dozens of others, on Thursday, November 15, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Broomfield FISH is hosting its annual Harvest of Hope Luncheon at the Omni Interlocken Hotel. “The Harvest of Hope is our primary fundraising event,” said Emily CrouseJoo, events and marketing consultant for Broomfield FISH. She added that in the past year, “We have seen a major uptick in requests for not only food but housing and utility support as well, so we are hoping for a very strong turnout.” Harvest of Hope is by far FISH’s largest fundraiser of the year. There is no cost to attend this inspiring event; guests instead are invited to donate however much they choose at the end of the program.

By supporting Harvest of Hope, guests help FISH meet several goals including: • • • • •

Ensuring that Broomfield residents do not go hungry Supporting family Resource Center activities Promoting stable homes for FISH families Promoting pathways to self-sufficiency Offering mentoring and resources

“We are very excited for this year’s luncheon presentation because we will feature our strong partnership with King Soopers on Miramonte Blvd. and Hwy 287, as well as hear from the store manager at our local Sprouts who was a client here at FISH several years ago. In addition, we will have Miss Teen Colorado, also a previous client of FISH, and her mom, Mrs. USA, present for the event,” said Crouse-Joo. There are many ways to support FISH including as a financial donor, as a volunteer, by hosting a food drive, or by participating in Adopt-a-Shelf. The Adopta-Shelf program allows families, groups, neighborhoods or businesses to adopt a shelf of food and refill it once a month with either a monetary donation or by purchasing items. Most adoptive groups spend between $40 and $200 to restock their shelves. It takes multiple adoptions for each item. Visit the website for information about items that are in highest demand, and shelves in need of a sponsor. Founded in 1963, Broomfield FISH helps neighbors in need with emergency food and financial assistance, while at the same time empowering them to become more self-sufficient. For more information on attending the Harvest of Hope and other ways to get involved with FISH, visit www.broomfieldfish.org. Community Resources Available for the

‘Sandwich Generation’ Squeezed by Multiple Caregiver Roles By Kristen Beckman

More and more middle-aged Americans are finding themselves taking on the role of caring for their aging parents while also still raising young children or financially supporting adult children. This phenomenon – known as the sandwich generation – is becoming increasingly common as America’s largest generation enters its golden years at a time when young Americans are struggling to gain a financial foothold in the face of high student debt loads and expensive housing markets. 20

THE BROOMFIELDER™ OCTOBER 2018

A

bout one in eight Americans are performing this dualcaretaker role, according to research conducted by the Pew Research Center in 2013. The share of middle-aged adults living in the sandwich generation has increased slightly in recent years, but the financial squeeze associated with caring for multiple generations has grown at an even greater pace. According to Pew, nearly half of adults aged 40-59 provide some financial support to at least one grown child and more than one-quarter of parents in this age group are the primary financial support for their adult child. About one in five middle-aged adults have provided financial support to a parent aged 65 or older. Not only do many caregivers provide financial support to both parents and children, but about 38 percent also said their parents and grown children also rely on them for emotional support, according to the research. Three-quarters of the 44 million unpaid elder caregivers in the country also work 35 or more hours a week. Trying to remain productive at work while juggling caregiver roles can lead to job stress or the need to change jobs to accommodate caregiving responsibilities, job loss, and difficulty maintaining a healthy work life balance. Devoting an increased amount of time to caregiving responsibilities can also lead to health concerns and mental and emotional health issues, including anxiety and depression. Caregiver burnout is a real thing. Experts recommend looking for resources within the community to help alleviate some of the stress of taking care of elderly family members. Broomfield has an extensive menu of services designed to improve quality of life for its senior residents, and these programs can also help caregivers provide the best possible care for their elderly loved ones while still being able to manage other responsibilities in their lives. Services provided by Broomfield Senior Services and the city’s Department of Health and Human Services include assistance with transportation, nutrition, and education.

Ben Vagher, president of Senior Resources of Broomfield, which provides support to many of the city’s programs, said seniors make up the fastest-growing demographic in Broomfield and their needs vary. One of the biggest issues facing the community’s seniors is basic housing concerns, including being able to afford to move when the house they’ve lived in for decades no longer works for them or making the decision to move into a retirement facility. Senior Resources of Broomfield helps with counseling and education to help seniors find solutions to their housing concerns. The organization also has a handyman program to help seniors deal with home repairs. Mobility is also a primary concern for seniors, many of whom no longer drive, as well as their caregivers who often pick up the responsibility for providing transportation. Broomfield’s Easy Ride program provides door-to-door, wheelchair-accessible transportation for doctor’s appointments, grocery store trips, errands, exercise classes, and social engagements by appointment. The city’s nutrition programs can also help eliminate stress around making sure seniors have access to healthy food. Vagher said the city’s lunch program at the Senior Center is typically well attended, and Meals on Wheels fills in the gap for seniors who aren’t mobile. Meals on Wheels is available to any Broomfield resident 60 years or older regardless of income, and provides affordable meals delivered to their door. Caregiving family members who reside at the same address may also qualify for Meals on Wheels. In addition, remaining socially and physically engaged with the community is important for seniors, said Vagher. “As individuals and couples age, they are very proud people, and they don’t want to bother other people for whatever their needs or are what they aren’t capable of doing,” said Vagher. “A lot close themselves up a bit and they don’t want to get out. They think they are a problem, so their world gets a lot smaller. We are working hard to make sure they are still part of the community.”

Good Nutrition Vital for Seniors By Chef Elizabeth Buckingham

Good nutrition is essential throughout life, but there are a few key periods when it’s even more important. Young children, pregnant women, and seniors must make an extra effort to eat well and get enough rest, in order to keep bodies and brains as healthy as possible. Older adults need extra vitamins and minerals to support healthy aging, and it’s also important to maintain a healthy weight, since excess weight contributes to a wide variety of health challenges. Perceptual changes, such as gradual loss of taste and smell, can have a huge impact on older adults’ overall enjoyment of eating. Making food preparation pleasant, eating with others, and using a wide variety of delicious herbs, spices, and citrus can help, as can experimenting with new foods and tastes gradually.

22

THE BROOMFIELDER™ OCTOBER 2018

Cook at Home Cooking at home is the best way to maintain a healthy weight; eating out should be an event reserved for special occasions, not an everyday occurrence. Aging adults should focus diet on good-quality whole foods: unlimited fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, such as brown rice and quinoa, heart-healthy fats, like avocado, nuts, and seeds, and minimal amounts of high-quality meat and dairy. Eggs can be a great simple source of nutrition as they’re inexpensive and easy to cook; buy eggs from a local farm, if possible. Limit cured and processed meats, canned soups, frozen meals, cereals, and just about anything that comes in a box or package.

Limit Sugar and Beware of Packaged Foods

Hydrate!

Above all else, limit sugar intake: sugar ages us prematurely, and many scientists believe that the monumental health crises our country is currently facing, including heart disease, diabetes, cancers, and more, are directly related to the massive quantities of added sugars we consume. Skip the soda and sweetened drinks and stick to black coffee, green tea, and water with a little lemon or cucumber. Make good nutrition easy by doing as much as possible at one time; for example, after you grocery shop, spend a couple of hours prepping and chopping. Peel and cut raw vegetables into easy, snack-size portions, then place them at eye level in the fridge so they’re the first thing you see. Avoid buying chips, cookies, candy, and other empty snacks; they provide zero nutrition and they’re easy to overeat. Fruits, vegetables, and whole grains contain lots of beneficial fiber, which helps our digestive systems work better especially important for older adults - and are thought to prevent many types of cancer. If your kitchen only contains healthy foods, then that’s what you’ll eat. Many seniors don’t feel like eating when they first wake up, and it’s important to listen to your body and eat when you’re actually hungry. If you take medication, however, it’s often essential to have a little food in your stomach. Make wholegrain toast and top it with peanut or almond butter and a sliced ripe banana. It’s not a heavy breakfast that weighs you down, but instead a good mix of healthy fats, protein and complex carbs to get your day started. Calcium intake becomes increasingly important with age, especially to keep bones healthy; whole-milk dairy and leafy greens are both excellent sources. Homemade smoothies are a great way to get lots of nutrition without complicated cooking techniques; a powerful blender makes this process much easier. Blend frozen fruit, whole-milk yogurt, a generous handful of spinach, kale or other leafy greens, and a handful of oats or nuts until smooth and creamy. Adding flax, hemp, or chia seeds boosts the nutrition content of this delicious drink even more.

Keep a reusable water bottle with you at all times and drink plenty of plain water throughout the day; dehydration is a serious problem that can especially affect older adults who may not feel thirsty. Proper hydration helps all the body’s systems function effectively and contributes to overall good health.

Many senior centers, libraries, and grocery stores offer cooking classes to help adults of any age learn how to take better care of themselves. Preparing and eating nutritious food shouldn’t be a chore, but should be something we do with joy and honor and respect for our bodies. Making an effort to eat well as you age might seem challenging at first, but the results are completely worth it. Your brain and body will thank you!

Simple Strategies

Can Ease Financial Anxiety in Retirement By Kristen Beckman

24

THE BROOMFIELDERâ„¢ OCTOBER 2018

For most Americans, retirement means the chance to enjoy all the things they haven’t been able to do while working, including relaxation, travel, spending time with family, and leisure activities.

But for many Americans, retirement also brings with it stress about finances and the ability to pay for both day-to-day and unexpected expenses. The increasing amount of stress associated with financial readiness in retirement is partly a result of an increasing life expectancy while the average retirement age has remained steady at about 65 years old. This means retirees and pre-retirees have to plan for their financial support for a much longer period of time – an average of 20 years today compared with just 12 years in the 1960s – according to data compiled by the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College. Meanwhile, the retirement landscape is changing. Pensions, once the primary tool many used to fund retirements, are all but obsolete, leaving today’s workers with the responsibility to save for their own retirement. And the Social Security safety net could also soon be weaker. The Social Security Administration estimates that benefit outlays will exhaust the Social Security trust fund in 2037, meaning benefits will have to be paid from ongoing tax revenues at an expected 76 percent of scheduled benefits. In Broomfield, seniors listed a variety of financial concerns in the Denver Regional Council of Governments Area Agency on Aging’s 2018 Community Assessment Survey for Older Adults. Among the reported concerns were having enough money to pay for daily expenses, being able to afford quality housing, and acquiring the skills needed to work. It’s not just day-to-day expenses that create financial stress among retirees. A recent study by Fidelity Investments estimated that the average couple retiring today at age 65 can expect to need $285,000 saved to pay for healthcare and medical costs in retirement. In Broomfield, an increasing number of seniors reported concerns about finding affordable health insurance, paying for needed medications and dealing with public programs such as Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. Knowing how much to save can be difficult. The top advice financial experts give to pre-retirees is to save as much as possible as early as possible. Compounding interest is a powerful force that can multiply savings over time and propel younger savers to greater wealth that older savers may not be able to catch up with. Experts also recommend fully funding 401k plans and taking advantage of automatic escalators that increase contributions annually. Experts also recommend thinking about retirement goals while you are still working so that you can determine how much you need to save now to fund the lifestyle you want when you retire. These goals can include travel and recreation goals, housing expectations, and whether you hope to make ‘dream’ purchases like a boat or a vacation home. Online calculators are widely available to help you evaluate your

current savings and expected Social Security benefits to give you a roadmap to achieve your financial goals. Understanding Social Security claiming strategies can increase your benefits. Depending on your age, you can delay Social Security benefits for several years, which increases your monthly benefit when you begin drawing benefits. Conversely, claiming Social Security benefits early reduces your monthly benefit. Having a plan for unexpected costs that could come up in retirement, including home repairs and expensive dental work, can help you avoid devastating financial impacts. Avoid using credit cards to manage unexpected expenses and consider the pros and cons of insurance products – such as dental insurance or longterm care insurance – that may help ease the burden of certain medical costs. Tap into local resources to learn about financial planning strategies or to get help when finances get difficult. The City of Broomfield offers classes year-round through the Senior Center to help pre-retirees and retires understand financial strategies for retirement. Classes are also available at the library that teach how to maximize Social Security benefits and learn about investment withdrawal strategies. In addition, the Department of Health and Human Services offers a variety of programs to help seniors who may be struggling to make ends meet. These include the Old Age Pension program, which provides financial assistance and, in some cases, help with medical benefits for low-income adults over the age of 60. The Prescription Discount Program helps residents save money on prescriptions not covered by insurance using a discount card accepted at participating pharmacies. THE BROOMFIELDER™ OCTOBER 2018

Hiring Perspective As the summer slowly slips away, and the kids go back to school, the workforce shortage in the Broomfield Area is becoming even more acute. Retailers throughout the area are suddenly without their summer help. One place that retailers should be looking at more than ever is to our senior population. Many seniors have either retired, or even though it is illegal, been downsized because of their age and are not ready to retire. This is a workforce that is trained and ready to work and has learned the value of treating people the way they want to be treated. As the CEO of the Broomfield Chamber, I hear from our member businesses about the difficulties in hiring qualified employees. Many businesses don’t have the time or budget to train their new hires in the skill they need, so they are looking to hire for these skills. A better process these days might be to hire for attitude and train the skills. One of my favorite motivational posters has a CFO asking, “What if we train them and they leave?” to which the experienced CEO responds, “What if we don’t train them and they stay?” Yes, training people involves a risk, but to keep employees, no matter what age group you are hiring from, requires a company to provide a work environment where people not only contribute to the bottom line, but are able to contribute to their own bottom line. As luck would have it, as I write this article, I am right in the middle of the hiring process for a membership position. I have applicants that are young and old, skilled and unskilled, and as I interview both by phone and in person, I find that every single one of them has something to offer. It is my job as an employer to look at the whole person and see how they would fit in knowing that a happy employee is a productive employee. As a small member driven organization, we can’t offer a big salary or a new company car, so I need to find someone that will be happy increasing the employment base and economic activity in the Broomfield area, not just working for a paycheck and the next raise. We won’t find anyone that will have all the skills, confidence, connections, and experience at the pay we are offering, but give us a person that truly loves their job promoting our local businesses and the Broomfield Chamber will continue to thrive.

Healthy

Brought to You by Fall Harvest By Sara Baker, MS, CSCS

H 28

alloween is the top candy holiday with Americans spending $2.7 billion on candy alone. Though Halloween is only one day, there seems to be endless Halloween activities with copious amounts of candy for weeks prior to the actual day. Halloween also seems to kick off the holiday season with weeks and weeks of leftover candy followed by the indulgent holiday season.

THE BROOMFIELDERâ„¢ OCTOBER 2018

Since kids and adults will be getting plenty of candy everywhere, why not serve up some healthier options? Whether it be for a school party, work potluck, or your own Halloween festivities, many will appreciate healthier fare amongst all the sugary treats. There is so much amazing produce this time of year, so take advantage of the incredible fall harvest when planning your menu. It can be a challenge to get kids to eat fruits and vegetables on a regular basis so making them a bit more appealing and holiday-themed can be fun for everyone.

There are plenty of fun food ideas to get into the Halloween spirit which are great for school parties or even just a fun after school snack. Quarter an apple, cut out the middle to make a mouth, fill the mouth with nut butter and place sunflower seeds for the teeth and 2 chocolate chips ‘glued’ with honey for the eyes. A few extra minutes turns an ordinary apple into a Silly Apple Bite. Another easy crowd pleaser can be made by taking a small piece of celery and placing it into the top of a peeled clementine to make a kid sized snacking ‘pumpkin.’ If you are hosting a Halloween party, making candied apples is a fun activity for everyone. Most candied apples are loaded with sugar as after it is dipped in caramel, it is often then dipped in candy pieces, coated with chocolate syrup and then topped with more candy. For a healthier twist, dip the apples in a thin layer of dark chocolate (dark chocolate has less sugar than milk chocolate) and then use a variety of healthier toppings such as pomegranate seeds, nuts, or coconut flakes.

If you are looking for fall treats that are a bit more sophisticated, you cannot go wrong with baked apples or pears. Halving either an apple or pear and topping with a small amount of pure maple syrup, a dash of cinnamon and a splash of vanilla make a delicious fall treat that also contains vitamins and minerals, not to mention a much healthier choice than a handful of candy. You can also top these with a small bit of granola to make a variation of apple or pear crisp.

If you are looking for something a bit more savory for the kids and want to get some vegetables into their tummies before they fill it with candy, try roasting seasonal vegetables such as sweet potatoes or beets. Cut sweet potatoes and white potatoes in half, width wise. With a small paring knife or with a pumpkin cookie cutter, cut jack-o-lantern shapes into the sweet potatoes and make witch’s hats with the beets and then roast until soft. Another sweet potato option is topping roasted and sliced sweet potatoes with cinnamon cream cheese and maple pecans, which makes a nutritious bite sized dessert.

Grapes also taste fantastic in the fall. Try placing grapes on a large skewer and freeze until hard. Remove from freezer and drizzle with dark chocolate for a very delicious yet simple dessert that kids and adults will both love. Figs are also in season this time of year and if you have never had the pleasure of a fresh fig, then now is the time. Dipping figs in melted dark chocolate is an amazing combination that will give you a healthy dose of antioxidants as well.

Halloween is such a fun holiday but the insane amount sugar consumption can really take a toll on your health. Next time you need a food item for a school party, work potluck or your own social event, consider healthier options using the delicious produce available at this time of year. Your body will thank you!

Exciting New Season With Shows for Everyone!

C

reative Broomfield launched its new 2018-2019 Creative Season with an aim toward providing new performances with appeal to Broomfield’s broad demographics. “This launch is taking a step toward expanding and improving arts programming in Broomfield. The Cultural Affairs staff have worked creatively and diligently to bring together this line-up,” said Broomfield’s Education and Cultural Enrichment Manager Mickey Love. “Discussions of changing over to a season format for our programming, allowed us to continue with many of the successful performers that we have had in the past, as well as open up new doors and explore different ones. Some of the performers we had been in talks with for years, and we finally were able to work them into this format. Others were brand new finds. “We’ve worked hard to ensure that there is something for everyone’s taste, from classical comedy to a Johnny Cash tribute; Big Screen Favorites to jazz; plus short films; a holiday Bluegrass performance; an Oscar-nominated feature, and more,” he enthusiastically shared. All events will be held at the Broomfield Auditorium.

This month, enjoy The Music of the Big Easy, on Wednesday, October 3 at 7:00 p.m., with tickets on sale for $10 in advance and $15 at the door. The University of Colorado Thompson Jazz Studies Faculty will perform New Orleans style jazz classics such as “Basin St. Blues,” “Do You Know what it Means (To Miss New Orleans),” and “Struttin with some Barbecue.” For the Biggest Hits, they will present Big Band classics such as “Woodchoppers Ball,” “April in Paris,” and “One O’clock Jump.” Join John Gunther, Paul McKee, Jeff Jenkins, Bijoux Barbosa, Paul Romaine, and others for these phenomenal programs.

THE BROOMFIELDER™ OCTOBER 2018

Also in October, the series features Cash’d Out on Saturday, October 13, at 7:00 p.m., with tickets on sale for $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Cash’d Out channels Johnny Cash in about as close a manner to the real thing as it gets, with critics declaring Cash’d Out the “next best thing to Johnny Cash.” The show respectfully references the late, great Man in Black’s Sun Records and early Columbia era sounds, combined with the energy of the classic multi-platinum live recordings from Folsom Prison and San Quentin. Love explained why the team is particularly enthusiastic about bringing Cash’d Out to Broomfield. “We had been looking at them for about a year. Then read that Johnny Cash’s family and friends endorsed Cash’d Out as the next best thing to Johnny Cash, so we knew they were something special. We are excited to give Broomfield the opportunity to hear them,” he said.

Lil’ Friends:

A Respite Care Solution for Families with Special Needs Kids In Broomfield, families with children with special needs are fortunate to have local access to several unique resources and programs such as programs through our public schools, Bal Swan Children’s Center, and FRIENDS of Broomfield. But for many families, more is needed. Lil’ Friends is a new Broomfield-based statelicensed childcare facility for three- to sixteen-year-olds that aims to fill the gap by providing respite care for special needs children and families.

Photo submitted by Ange Shores (Photo credit to our friend, Aimee Hansen)

What is respite care? It is short-term care provided for a person in need of special support so that the person who usually cares for them can have a break. The unique new program is being launched by Shelly Cox and Ange Shores this fall in Broomfield. Lil’ Friends is dedicated to helping kids with developmental and physical disabilities by providing parents and caregivers periods of rest while children are taken care of in a safe and fun environment. Shores is the mother of a now adult daughter with special needs that require a high level of care and support. “If Lil’ Friends would have been around when my kids were younger, I would have gotten some much needed relief. As a young family, we could not afford to pay someone to watch Brittany – if I could even have found someone to watch her, it’s extremely hard to find someone to watch our special kids – and our extended family members were becoming worn down,”

she explained. “With Lil’ Friends, I would have gotten a break, whether it be spending more quality time with my other children, a movie, shopping, a doctors appointment or even a nap. I would have been a much less stressed Mom of three,” she said. Shelly Cox described how the ideas was born: “I had the opportunity to attend a fundraiser at FRIENDS of Broomfield, which provides programs for adults with developmental disabilities. At that fundraiser, I realized that what they do for the adult population is an absolute gift to their participants and families. Their program inspired me to form a similar type of program for children.” Lil’ Friends will provide respite care, family and community networking, and support. Children will participate in a playbased developmental model to strengthen life, motor, social, and communication skills, while being cared for in a safe and nurturing environment. To begin with, Lil’ Friends is offering limited hours throughout the week on a space available basis. Families will enter the program and then set up a schedule. A program will be set for each client from a regular weekly schedule to use based on appointments or special circumstances. Cox explained that they are already getting great feedback from new clients, “Several families have already expressed excitement about having a date night once a month. These families especially need this much needed time.”

Lil' Friends is partnering with Holy Comforter Church and will be located in one of its facilities. "Holy Comforter is honored and excited to host the Lil' Friends program on our campus. Their much needed offering will add strength to our community; and, we look forward to welcoming all of the families," said Reverand Kim Seidman. Lil’ Friends will provide much more than just short-term care. They are also offering therapies to really help maximize the time and experience. One-on-one and small group therapy services including occupational therapy, physical therapy, and speech language pathology are planned in the near future. “As a Pediatric Occupational Therapist for the majority of my career I have witnessed the amount of time it takes to care for a child with special needs. These parents love their kids so very much and spend an enormous amount of time caring for them, going to medical appointments, filling out paperwork, attending meetings, and making sure that their child has the best programming possible based on their needs. It is extremely time consuming and can be stressful and tiring, said Cox. “These amazing parents need a break from time to time in order to recharge and be the best parents they can be! There are situations sometimes too where a ‘regular’ babysitter does not have the training needed to care for a child with special needs. Then the entire family unit can be worn down.”

Fire Prevention Week

Focuses on Home Safety and Preparedness By Sara Farris

Today’s home fires burn faster than ever. In a typical home fire, you may have as little as one to two minutes to escape safely from the time the smoke alarm sounds. Knowing how to respond takes planning and practice. North Metro Fire Rescue District is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) to promote this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, “Look. Listen. Learn. Be aware. Fire can happen anywhere™,” which works to educate the public about basic but essential ways to quickly and safely escape a home fire. NFPA statistics show the number of U.S. home fires has been steadily declining over the past few decades. However, the majority of fire deaths happen at home, and that rate was 10 percent higher in 2016 than in 1980. This can be attributed to many factors, including the lack of working smoke alarms in a home and the composition of new homes and furnishings that burn more quickly. The best way families can get out safely if a fire occurs in their home is to ensure they have working smoke alarms and to practice their home escape plan. A smoke alarm is often the first warning a family gets when there’s a fire in the home, especially if it occurs during

the night when everyone is sleeping. The fire district recommends that parents test their smoke alarms monthly and replace the batteries twice a year. Additionally, the District suggests practicing a fire drill in the middle of the night to see if children are really prepared and can get out quickly. North Metro Fire wants to help families prepare by hosting two fire safety days during Fire Prevention Week, October 6 to 13. The District will have an inflatable safety house where kids will learn about fire hazards in the home, hear the sound of a smoke alarm and practice crawling low under smoke to their designated meeting place. They’ll also get to practice calling 9-1-1 with firefighters to test that they know their address and what to say to an emergency dispatcher.

Do you know someone who selflessly gives to the community? Do you have a friend who you admire for their commitment to a cause or organization? Does your friend help others in the neighborhood and simply make their own corner of the world a better place? Is there someone who inspires you with their generosity of time, treasure or talent? We are looking for those quiet, unsung local angels who embody giving and deserve a round of thanks. We will feature as many short appreciations as space allows in the November issue.
