WELCOME The 2021 Lotus Cup Europe season turned out to be somewhat of a success, against the pandemic odds! The opening round at Hockenheim was caught foul by Covid restrictions and then Spa cancelled mid-meeting due to the wellpublicised flooding we then somehow ran all remaining events to the end of the year. Thanks must go to DTM as they pulled off three fantastic events at Monza, Zolder and Nurburgring. Arguably the visit to the spectacular Monza circuit was the highlight of the season, with a hard core of drivers and teams following no end of travel and event restrictions to get to Italy. The racing at the following rounds, especially at Zolder in terrible conditions was top class with the live tv commentator getting carried away on more than one occasion. After the three DTM rounds we moved on to Le Mans joining the FIA & French truck championships before Paul Ricard in October was cancelled with just a couple of weeks’ notice. The racing gods were on our side though and along with support from the circuit we managed to hold a very private event at the French home of F1, finishing the season with three races. The title went down to the final weekend in the south of France with Hungary’s Bence Balogh taking the overall and V6 honours for a record third time from the UK’s Toby Goodman who took the Production crown and runner up slot in his Elise S2. Jean-Pierre Genoud-Prachex took the 2-Eleven title while ex-double champion Tamas Vizin finished third overall and provided the main competition to Bence, the pair swapping race leads numerous times during the season. Looking forward to 2022 arguably the seasons highlight will be the trip to Imola with DTM, a first visit to the Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari for LCE. We also return to Spa-Francorchamps twice, first off for a 50 minute race and then with DTM whom we also join again at Nürburgring. We’ll start the season by joining our friends at the Championnat de France Camions at Paul Ricard on the full F1 circuit and join them again at the Le Mans 24 Heures Camions for the season finale. After the opening round at Paul Ricard we have a very welcome return to the Hockenheim Historic - Jim Clark Revival. Of course, it would not be possible for any of us to compete without the hard work of our volunteers and the marshals, and we are hugely grateful for their contribution. Arguably more than ever before in 2021 we were grateful of the support of teams and a hardcore of drivers. We are always happy to help with any further queries you may have and we look forward to welcoming you to our events this season! Paul Golding Championship Coordinator

Europe’s finest coming together Lotus Cup Europe is firmly established as one of the continent’s strongest single-marque championships. Originally set up by Lotus as a direct response to customer and dealer interest for a fun but professionally-run series, it has attracted competitors from across the continent. Lotus Cup Europe was granted FIA International Series status in 2013, similar to prestigious Championships such as DTM and GT World Series. To include as much of the Lotus range of sportscars as possible, entries are split into four classes: • GT Cup – Evora GT4 & Emira. • Exige Cup – Exige V6 Cup cars. • 2-Eleven/Open – for the four-cylinder supercharged open-top 2-Eleven, four-cylinder Exige Cup cars, the Elise Cup PB-R and other cars based on the Elise chassis that are not eligible for the other categories. • Production – for normally-aspirated Elises and the Elise Cup R. Championship points are scored according to class position. This means that drivers from all four classes have an equal chance of competing for the overall title. Current champion Bence Balogh won from the V6 Cup ranks last year in his Evora GT4 whilst Toby Goodman was runner up in his Elise S2 – K-series.

For the 2022 season there will be three races at Paul Ricard and the season finale at Le Mans, just two of the classic circuits visited by Lotus Cup Europe, all of which have featured on present or past Formula 1 Grand Prix calendars. The 2022 championship will open in the south of France at Paul Ricard as part of the Grand Prix Camions du Castellet truck racing event. It will then move on to Germany for Hockenheim Historic, which is one of the venue’s biggest events of the season and incorporates the Jim Clark Revival. From there the series will visit the historic and emotional Imola circuit in Italy, the first of three rounds supporting the prestigious and hugely popular DTM championship. Next up is the first of two visits to the majestic and challenging Spa-Francorchamps for a one-off 50 minute race. We then head right into DTM heartland, with huge crowds expected at the Nürburgring for our second event with Germany’s premier race championship. For the penultimate rounds we will return to Spa Francorchamps, this time with our normal double race format, again alongside DTM. The season comes to an end at Le Mans as part of the 24 Heures Camions event that see’s the World’s largest truck racing event come together. The champions will be crowned on the famous La Sarthe podium. Lotus Cup Europe will be broadcasted live for the majority of its rounds with a highlights programme also being available after the events. The championship also enjoys unrivalled support from the Lotus community, with many owners and enthusiasts attending events. This is backed up by social media activity, where well over 60,000 Facebook followers gave the Lotus Cup Europe page over 3 million views and a quarter of a million likes in our last pre-C19 season.

Classes

GT Cup (Emira & Evora) The GT Cup (Evora GT4 & Emira) class is home to the most powerful cars in the Lotus range; the all conquering Evora GT4 and the new Emira. Max power 360bhp, max power-to-weight (including driver) 285.7bhp/tonne. Two models are eligible for this category: Evora GT4 – The race-prepared variant is normally-aspirated, but tuned by Cosworth and built to GT4 regulations. Emira GT4 – The Emira GT4 (subject to homologation) which uses a supercharged Toyota V6 engine. Both cars are equalised on power-to-weight to ensure parity on track.

Exige Cup

The Exige Cup class is specifically designed for the factory specification Exige V6 race cars. Max power-to-weight at the hubs of 340bhp and with a maximum power-to-weight (including driver) of 285.7bhp/tonne. A single model is eligible for this category: Exige V6 Cup – The Exige V6 Cup car has a supercharged Toyota V6, and is tuned for road and track performance.

Classes

2-Eleven/Open The 2-Eleven and Open classes stay combined for the 2022 season, with both equalised on power-to-weight. Several cars are eligible for this category: 2-Eleven – Powered by the four-cylinder, supercharged Toyota engine, the 2-Eleven is an uncompromising, track-focussed open top car. Max power 250bhp, min weight (including driver) 815kg. 4-cylinder Exige – The previous generation of Exige Cup cars powered by the four-cylinder, supercharged Toyota. Whilst they are heavier than the 2-Eleven, these cars have a more aerodynamically-efficient shape. Elise Cup PB-R – Upgraded Elise S3. Sequential box & more power. Open class cars – max power 260bhp, max power-to-weight (including driver) 285.7bhp/tonne.

Production The Production class is primarily for Elises, and whilst these are around 100bhp down on the other two categories, the racing here is even closer and more frenetic, with several cars and drivers capable of winning races. Eligible cars, equalised for power-to-weight, include: Elise Cup R & Elise S3 – The latest track-focussed incarnation of the Elise is powered by a four-cylinder, supercharged Toyota engine, but Lotus Cup Europe regulations ensure that rival machinery is able to compete on even terms. Max power 195bhp with series-spec engine map, min weight (inc.driver) 975kg. Elise S2 – Both K-series and Toyota-engined cars have competed in the Production class, with K-series cars allowed to carry a little less weight to make up for the power deficiency to the Toyota machines. K-series max power 161bhp, minimum weight 790kg. Toyota max power 180bhp, min weight (including driver) 885kg. Elise S1 – The lightest and oldest cars competing in Lotus Cup Europe, Series 1 Elises run the K-series engine and regularly compete for race victories in this class. Max power 161bhp, minimum weight (inc.driver) 790kg. www.lotuscupeurope.com

Season Review

Lotus Cup Europe 2021 - Season review Bence Balogh wins third championship title Bence Balogh was crowned Lotus Cup Europe champion for the third time in 2021 after a fantastic season of racing taking in some of the best circuits in Europe. Following cancellation of the Hockenheim opener due to Covid restrictions and severe flooding at Spa Francorchamps, the season eventually got underway in style at Monza, the first of several rounds supporting DTM.

the 211/Open class’ battle of the spouses as well as Goodman’s Production defence from Mick Edwards and his son Bailey. Balogh continued his winning form into the next rounds at Zolder, prevailing in two spectacular duels with Vizin, both of which were only decided late on after a relentless fight for victory between the pair. Daniel Palma secured third in both races, the second of which took place after a heavy rain shower delayed proceedings for a short while but leaving treacherous conditions for the drivers to contend with. There were also double wins for 211/Open’s JP Genoud-Prachex - after fending off wife Nathalie and compatriot François De Witte - as well as Production’s Toby Goodman, who held both Edwards and Cai Cederholm at bay.

This was the first time Lotus Cup Europe had visited this fantastic historic Italian circuit and it certainly did not disappoint with some close racing across all three classes. Balogh got his campaign off to a fine start with victory in race one, an all-Hungarian affair for overall honours with reigning champion Tamas Vizin and Egon Burkus challenging for the V6 class. The 211/Open category saw Jean-Pierre Genoud-Prachex leading the way home ahead of his wife Nathalie, while in Production, Toby Goodman drove a faultless race to lead from the start to the flag. Race two produced a similar result, however the racing was equally as frenetic, in particular 10

www.lotuscupeurope.com

The third and final DTM-supporting rounds of the year were held at Germany’s Nürburgring, where Vizin finally got revenge on his compatriot, holding off Balogh and Jason McInulty to take the flag in race one. The top two were reversed in the second race, however, in which Nikolaj Ipsen occupied the final step on the podium.

Season Review Elsewhere, JP Genoud-Prachex and Toby Goodman both continued to dominate their respective classes, putting pressure on Balogh’s title bid. Two triple-header rounds in France would decide the 2021 title, the first of these being held on the Le Mans Bugatti circuit, where Balogh would commence an inexorable run to championship victory. Resisting further pressure from Vizin, Balogh recorded a hat-trick of wins, while German debutant Sven Barth claimed a podium finish in two of the encounters, with Daniel Palma completing the set.

family honour in the season finale. In the other classes, race one honours were shared between Balogh - who had a straightforward run to the flag when Vizin’s challenge faltered with a mechanical issue – and Goodman. The pair repeated the trick in race two to set up a thrilling title decider. With Vizin back up to speed, the overall win was a tense fight between the two Hungarians, but Balogh was wise to the challenge and crossed the line to take his 11th win of the season – one short of a clean sweep. By contrast, Goodman had a disastrous race - albeit still a podium finisher - third behind Cederholm and Bailey Edwards. Thus Balogh held the Lotus Cup Europe title aloft for the third time. The ongoing effects of the Covid pandemic continued to present a huge challenge for the championship organisers and drivers alike during 2021, with restricted travel, regular testing and quarantining becoming the norm, but once again the championship fulfilled its objective of providing a fun, sociable and safe environment for Lotus enthusiasts to compete on track.

With Balogh back in control, the other two classes saw their respective leaders successfully challenged. David McInulty scored a 211/Open victory in race one, while Mick Edwards topped the Production podium. Normal service was resumed in the following two races, but the title momentum had headed towards Balogh. Moving south to Paul Ricard, Balogh, JP Genoud-Prachex and Goodman were set for the title decider, all determined to bring the overall crown to their respective classes. First to fall was JP, with engine failure in qualifying ending his challenge and leaving the door open for David McInulty to take two class wins, before Nathalie Genoud-Prachex restored

We wish all the drivers, teams and their families as well as everyone else who has supported Lotus Cup Europe in 2021 a safe and healthy winter and look forward to the new season, which is scheduled to commence at Circuit Paul Ricard in April. www.lotuscupeurope.com

BENCE BALOGH

LCE Champion - Overall & V6 How does it feel to win the Lotus Cup Europe championship for a record third time? It honestly feels incredible. The team and I have put a lot of effort into it over the years and it’s great to see it coming to fruit like this. You seemed more emotional this year, having your partner as well as dad at events. What does it mean to have them alongside you at the races? We always went racing together with my dad. It’s our shared hobby and his support means a lot to me. It’s the first time I was accompanied by my love. It honestly is an amazing experience to have her with me. You won every race apart from the first Nurburgring race, how do you manage to stay so consistent throughout the season? Lots of practice. I meticulously prepare for every track at home in the simulator with a car model I prepared myself. We’re used to seeing the clinical Bence over the years, the utmost professional. However, what else do you do to relax? Other hobbies and interests? Most of my other interest I guess are mostly generic (books, videogames, movies, etc…). Something a bit more unique that I do for fun is 3D printing. There 14

TOBY GOODMAN

Production Champion & overall runner-up Your first full season in LCE and you’ve taken not only the Production championship but finished runner up over all. How do you feel about that? Yes, it’s been a great year and I’m obviously very proud of what we’ve achieved. It definitely wasn’t easy by any means and a lot of learning had to be done in a very short space of time. Taking the production championship was our main goal, but to be second overall as well…. We couldn’t have asked for more! Your success was achieved in not only the oldest car on the grid but arguably with the smallest budget – what was the secret to your consistency as well as reliability. Reliability and consistency go hand in hand. Without a car that you know as a driver will not only make it to the line, but can also be pushed to the limit with confidence no matter the conditions, you’ll really struggle as a driver to keep the results up. That’s where my team this year really out did themselves. Rob Sanderson took on the challenge of building that car and, although it may be the oldest, it managed to survive whatever was thrown at it all year, which is a testament to his level of preparation. The same can be said with Guy Janssen, he stepped in and helped us out with maintaining and transporting the car in Europe and supported us at every race weekend after Monza. The car was spot on for every round and made my job much easier! So, if there is a secret… you’ll have to ask them both! In the last race at Paul Ricard it was a bit touch and go whether you would make it to the finish line! What was going through your mind in the final laps? In all honesty I did my best to ignore it! I had radio communication with my team and they assured me everything was fine and to crack on so I did. I could feel it getting worse though, and right 16

TOBY GOODMAN

Production Champion & overall runner-up on the last lap the engine dropped and I was forced to complete the race at a crawl. With hindsight we were pretty lucky! Had the problem arisen in the first race we’d have struggled to complete the weekend and that would have cost us the championship, so at least the car was polite in its final moments. You carry Motorsport UK Academy stickers on your Elise – What is this and how are you involved? I’ll be going into my second year of the Motorsport UK Futures programme in 2022 and so far, it has been a real privilege. Motorsport UK select a dozen drivers who they feel have potential and have performed at a high level over an extended period of time. The aim of the programme is to provide these drivers with the knowledge and expertise required to reach their goals and perform at a higher level. I was selected to be a part of the programme just after my 2019 season in the MINI Challenge Trophy and it’s been an honour to have them on my car since. Obviously, you’re a very talented young driver, what are your plans for the future? My goal has always been to become a professional driver. It’s always a difficult sport to try and plan for as its always progressing and changing at rapid rate (quite literally) but with Lotus’ new Emira GT4 car announced, it gives me something to work towards. To race a Lotus in the first place is something very special, but to get behind the wheel of their latest and greatest would be a step beyond. It’s a really exciting time for motorsport, with electric and biofuel technology offering a captivating incentive for big manufactures to enter the sport in different categories especially in endurance racing. To stand on the top step of the podium at the Le Mans 24 is a dream I’ve always had but, for the time being two times Lotus Cup Europe Production Champion would be nice! www.lotuscupeurope.com

JEAN-PIERRE GENOUD-PRACHEX 2-Eleven/Open Champion

You moved back to your 2-Eleven in 2021, after a couple of seasons in the production class. How have you found being back in a faster car? It was always the plan to come back to 2-Eleven class. I had significant reliability problems with the 2-Eleven, and it required a quite expensive and time consuming rebuild to become again a winner. I decided to “pause” a couple of years in Production to provide the time and money required to cleanly rebuild and upgrade the 2-Eleven. In the mean time, I raced in production class and really enjoyed these years, but once the 2-Eleven was finished, I also enjoyed coming back with it. I raced 8 years in 2-Eleven class prior to my stint in production. 2-Elevens are fantastic cars to drive, light, reactive and smooth with their tyres. To me, it’s the ultimate expression of Colin Chapman’s “light is right” rule. We mentioned your reliability for the majority of the season, one of the reasons you originally moved from 211 to your Elise S3 was for reliability. What have you done to your 211 to improve its reliability? Overall, the car was in a quite “used” condition, and required a full rebuild. But above all, it had multiple oil pump failures in the past. Oil pumps on the standard Toyota engine are placed at the end of the crankshaft, and rotates at very high rpm which is not good. When used in combination with the SADEV gearbox, they are also affected by vibrations which make them prone to failure. We rebuilt a brand new engine equipped with the original race dry sump it had when racing under Lotus colours, a solution which eliminates these problems. I had to trace the equipment back to where it was in UK, as parts were no longer available ! Together with the full rebuild of the gearbox by SADEV, the car became mechanically sound and reliable. You found yourself in a few battles this year, not just with the other cars in your class but with the Exiges as well. However, until the final weekend you had great consistency & reliability along with getting the required results. How have you done this? With such a car and my 12 years of experience in LCE, it’s no wonder we are quick! The experience also counts when setting up the car, and I must say we were quite good this year at finding very quickly the good balance. That allowed me to fight with the slower V6s, but I am far from being able to get the quickest ones! We have to remain realistic: the 2-Eleven 18

Class Winners

rules have not been changed for years and Exiges and Evoras are quicker and quicker, and are much more powerful. The introduction of Motorsport ABS braking for them killed the advantage a 2-Eleven had in this phase, for instance. Even with similar power to weight ratios, V6 cars are much quicker in straight lines. We are talking about 20 km/h advantage, not easy to stay ahead with such a difference! Unfortunately, you had engine failure at Paul Ricard which must have been disappointing as you were pushing for the overall championship, how did you feel at that point? Quite frankly, I was devastated. The car up to then had perfect reliability and performance, I had best time in my class in qualifications and the engine broke for a very unusual reason. To be honest, even with a perfect score at Paul Ricard, I could not have won the championship, as Bence did also a perfect score there. The LCE rules provide a small advantage to the top racer in V6 class, as they give additional points to overall race leaders. So at similar performance in our class, a V6 would always be ahead, which I understand. Bence has been extremely competitive in its class as well and he fully deserves his title. On my side, I was nevertheless able to clinch the Class title, which I already did in 2020 but this time, it was over a full season! You obviously enjoy racing in the Lotus Cup Europe championship, what makes it such a great championship for you? First of all, I have been a Lotus fan forever. I managed the French Lotus Club for 12 years, 6 years as Secretary and 6 years as President. Another factor is that my wife Nathalie is also a great fan, so when we realized we could afford it, we both decided to go for it, each one in our own car, both on 2-levens. 11 years later, we are still here, enjoying to meet each year our friends and appreciating the competitive ambiance but always with respect from all competitors. We will never have enough time to thank Paul Golding and his crew for making this possible, thanks a lot for all of you guys and girls! www.lotuscupeurope.com

Paul Ricard returned to the F1 calendar in 2018, two years after Lotus Cup Europe held its first event at the Mediterranean venue. Paul Ricard hosted the French Grand Prix on many occasions from 1971 to 1990. Lotus drivers Ronnie Peterson and Mario Andretti won there, whilst future Lotus Cup Europe driver Martin Donnelly made his GP debut there 30 years ago. The Grand Prix Camions du Castellet is a hugely popular event at the venue, headlined by the Championnat de France Camions. French truck racing events are a carnival of colour and noise, and the venue is taken over by devotees to the freight cause, with a huge on-track parade on both days. The result is a big crowd for all three of the Lotus Cup Europe races. Location France Calendar Opened 1970 Length 5.821 km

Located close to Mannheim and Frankfurt, Hockenheim is the current home of the German Grand Prix and has hosted the event many times since its introduction to the Formula One calendar in 1970. Future Lotus World Champion Jochen Rindt won that event, but the annual Hockenheim Historic celebrates the life and legacy of Lotus icon Jim Clark. Lotus Cup Europe has been the only modern race series on the Hockenheim Historic bill for several seasons and has traditionally opened the season. The event also features racing from a variety of categories that has included BOSS GP for 90s and 00s F1 cars, Historic F2, classic sports and touring cars and much more. Le Mans returns as our season closer in 2022 as we once again visit as part of the huge 24 Heures Camions event. Whilst better known for the famous round the clock sportscar race, the venue in north west France also hosted the French Grand Prix in 1967 on the Bugatti circuit. Close to 60,000 fans attend the 24 Heures Camions event, which features both the Championnat de France Camions and the FIA European Truck Racing Championship, in fact Lotus Cup Europe brings the only car racing to the event.
