The winter blues! They always get me late January, early February. Our New writer, Mike Pratt has advice about getting out and about to fend off those depressive feelings, See his article on page 8.

I always think that I need a sunshine holiday mid winter but I can’t afford that luxury. I can afford a summer one though and I’ve just booked one!

Winter Wonder Wanders This on the face of it is not an easy time of year to like compared to say the spring or summer - long sunny days, new life everywhere and nature at its abundant best. Autumn too has its lovers with its ever changing colours, the array of fungi, deer and migrant birds. Yet I love January and February, the true winter months. When, on the surface it often appears both drab and unexciting. Look closer however and you may be surprised what encounters may come your way.

So far we have not had a traditional hard winter; more like one where you think climate change is very much here with all its inherent threats to species including our own. It is still winter however, stark and cold with the threat of storms or freezing temperatures either present or expected.

It’s my favourite time of year for general countryside walking, the time when it is most satisfying to walk all day in the cold and enjoy sitting by the fire and eating large amounts in the evening! Having travelled a lot in Iceland, Greenland and Scandinavia I have become accustomed to the art of ’hygge’, enjoying convivial times around a camp fire or indoor blazes while the weather rages or freezes around you.

This is all greatly enhanced by winter wildlife wonders you have seen that day, maybe photographed or even sketched. It is lovely to reflect on the day as you slide into a feeling of after dinner mellow peace.

Across the Tyne Valley and beyond there are many things to be seen each winter as well as a varied landscape to enjoy and immerse ourselves in.

Here are some of the things I’m looking out for or have already seen this winter: First off, waxwings! These exotic looking Scandi-migrants come in from Finland if the berry crops there are inadequate and look from a distance like starlings. Close up these are crested cinnamon coloured birds with a black eye mask. Their wings have red and yellow dabs. Every winter when I was a child they used to show up on the honeysuckle berries in our garden and I was allowed to stay off school to watch and draw them – thanks Mum! Maybe that’s why they are one of my favourites?

Redwings and fieldfares add more variety to our local thrushes, as do mixed flocks of finches and tits moving from tree to tree whilst ever communicating with their singing. Look out for siskins, crossbills, the odd redpoll, groups of bullfinch and maybe bramblings. These are all winter delights of the bird world. Possibly most satisfying of all, are the snow buntings! I’ve seen them breeding in Iceland and Svalbard and in winter they visit our shores along Druridge bay and towards Lindisfarne.

Sadly though now in their teens and not in their thousands as was the case fifty years ago. Just one small sign among very many that the state of our nature is in a steep decline.

I can hardly believe for example that there were 30 million hedgehogs in the UK when I was born and now there are only 1 million! My efforts to help nature along with the many thousands of other nature lovers have failed to stop the trend for many species. It’s just that all of human life has got more intense from industry to agriculture - even up here there is less unadulterated clean space for nature and the pressures continue to mount. We are living in a time of big changes in the natural world both locally and globally.

Even without snow we can get part ermine stoats (a winter white coat).

One of the best places I know to see them is the car park and environs at our Hauxley Wildlife Discovery Centre. These are stunning winter mammals, looking a little out of place in the warmer weather so far!

Last February, I was surprised to encounter an otter, crossing a minor road just outside Corbridge, you just never know at this time of year what will turn up.

At this time of the year many people can suffer from depression / illness / seasonal adjustment syndrome and other ills brought on by the feeling that we are in the dead of winter with little light. This is understandable and can affect us all in varying degrees. But science is now proving what we always knew, that the best cure for this is a dose of nature itself!

Getting out and about, walking or just sitting in the wild countryside lifts our energy and our spirits. So if the winter blues have caught you then make the effort and get outside whatever the weather. Fresh air and the great outdoors will give you a fresh view and perspective – promise!

It’s not as if it’s difficult to find a nice place to visit in the Tyne Valley!

People are surrounded by and defined by the diversity of the habitats and landscape they dwell in. So let it define you. The river corridor itself has all you could want in good walks and wildlife. I’ve seen otters, kingfishers, goosanders and many birds of prey all along the Tyne Valley. Last winter I watched in awe a fox catching freshly arrived redwings in the snow near Hexham. You have to be in it to win it!

Not that far away we have the whole of Kielder Forest to explore, which is as deep and wild as you can get in England. I like to visit Tarset, Sidwood, Kielderhead, Whitelee and Harbottle. They all have a great mix of edgy landscapes; hills, outcrops, woods, wet areas, moor and bogs - a varied microcosm of all that upland Northumberland has to offer.

Just go and look, don’t leave it till spring has sprung, get in early and start to enjoy your ‘wild winter wonder wanders’ and see what happens. It will freshen your mind, exercise your body and most important of all, replenish your winter spirit.

How I found my ticket to Hogwarts…

As pantomime season draws to a close and the season of good intentions and resolution’s is upon us I wanted to talk about kindness.

Why is it when things fall apart there is so much internal and external commotion whilst when things come together it’s always much softer?

Are we then therefore more prone to honing our attention on the rebuffs, sometimes never even really noticing the subtlety of grace all around us.

I recently had an experience in Kings Cross Station with a homeless lady that qualified as such. She approached me asking for money. I smiled explaining I had only just realized I was short myself for my journey once I get to Newcastle from London. Without hesitation she reached into her pocket and asked me “how much do you need?”

I laughed and said, “This is ridiculous, I cannot possibly take from you.”

She insisted, and after a lot of dialogue she threw the amount I needed into my open rucksack and walked away. I was flummoxed. I ran after her.

Her name was Jodie. Jodie had succumbed to life on the streets due to domestic violence and drug addiction. Jodie knew the value of home, and therefore the importance of my getting there safely.

I was so humbled by her gesture I decided to then hand back the money she had given me and all that I had left to get home. I knew in that instant, due to the absolute purity of her heart and mine that something would intervene in the meantime and ensure I was able to meet the Newcastle to Hexham train fare. After some gentle persuasion and my absolute assurance that the universal energies would conspire to support my journey home she left with the cash.

Later after some time watching the world go by, as I was walking towards the platform to catch my train she returned to hand me back all the money. I was surprised to see her again. She told me to take it as well as the extra she had given me, put simply she just wanted to know I would be safe. I knew to refuse her offering would be rude, she wanted to gift it to me. I trusted the exchange of the energies between us, giving, receiving and abundance. Besides it had God written all over it. It felt clean, it was honest and so I took it with a grateful heart.

“You have more kindness in your little finger than some people have all together.”- from the 2015 remake of Cinderella Those exchanges between Jodie and I were truly a series of quiet moments of true connection, compassion and grace. This intimacy was certainly magnified by the fact we were stood in the hustle and bustle of the UK’s busiest train station. What I find interesting is that nobody around us even noticed, had she become hostile there would have been an audience. But seemingly, there was nothing to see between Jodie and I? I want you to think about how the simple act of either giving or receiving kindness has the ability to impact your life. Can you observe how you felt when someone did something unexpected? How did it transform your day, week or month? How do you feel when your kindness is received, seen and appreciated by another?

Bob Kerry once said “unexpected kindness is the most powerful and underrated agent in human change.”

It is an example of the quantum law of energy in motion, positive and loving actions generating feel good experiences of connection between human beings. Kindness is contagious and with sincere intention, transformative.

In a world that can sometimes feel so hostile (especially if you use the news as your benchmark) do we dare run the risk of rejection or humiliation through our actions being ill received or misinterpreted? Might our politeness be seen as weakness? Our gentleness perceived as feeble?

We have to start somewhere but you are naïve if you believe being kind is a one off payment to a charity, pennies in a tin or even a time spent volunteering for a worthy cause. It’s more about the intention we actually have when we do those things, energy is everything. Being present in the truth of the moment connecting genuinely with another is what brings kindness to the action. The act itself does not make the action good, the energy you bring is the key. It’s like going to church once a week doesn’t somehow make you immune from being a cruel or selfish person.

In the beginning of creation when humans first came across each other, I imagine the most fearful one said “you are different go away.” This was the seed of separateness and division and when placed in fertile ground grew into ignorance and fear. I like to imagine instead they said “you are different come here and teach me,” creating space for respect, empathy, tolerance and awareness. Jodie taught me so much in those precious minutes we spent together. I felt cleansed, I remembered who I was, I had connected with my soul.

Later that evening as I arrived at my front door I had already begun to write the story I am sharing with you right now. Jodie’s actions had reminded me of a parable I had connected with during my private prayers in previous months at Hexham Abbey.

“And he sat down opposite the treasury and watched people putting in money to the offering box. Many rich people put in large sums. And a poor widow came and put in 2 copper coins, which make a penny. And he called his disciples to him and said to them, “Truly, I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the offering box. For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all that she had to live on” (Mark 12:43-44).”

Although the rich gave large quantities it still didn’t amount to as much as the widow for hers was of a different type of currency, faith. All the money on the planet could not compete with her penny in that moment, through her purity she was protected.

In a world that can sometimes leave us broke or broken (or both) and where good deeds can seemingly go amiss or worse, rejected, take courage in the knowledge the widows mites were heard in heaven.

God always see us.

Besides ask JK Rowling yourself, whilst the Harry Potter books might have glorified the world of magic it actually had a much simpler message at the heart of the story a theme that repeats throughout, loving sacrifice.

Seaweeds - food for free in our rock pools

The winter months may seem a frugal time for the wild food forager but there is still food to be found, even in these bleak months. The seashore is a good place for a winter forage, including seaweeds, a much under-used food source in modern day Britain. Being plants seaweeds are not growing much at this time of year and are better in the warmer months but you should still be able to collect enough for a meal even in winter.

The great thing about foraging for seaweeds is there aren’t any poisonous ones; you should still take care to identify them properly to avoid disappointment (a good seashore identification book will help you do this) but you won’t harm yourself if you get it wrong! We’ve been eating them for thousands of years and they’re rich in vitamins and minerals such as iron and iodine, contain protein and are low in calories.

There are three tasty, easy to identify and generally plentiful seaweeds that you’ll find up and down the Northumberland coastline: laver, sea lettuce and bladder wrack. With all the seaweed you collect, give it a good rinse in a rook pool to remove any sand and wash off any rock pool beasties. I usually collect in a bucket lined with a bin bag half filled with seawater. This helps keep your seaweed stay fresh and you can tie the top of the bin bag to stop it slopping around on the way home.

Everyone’s heard of the Welsh delicacy laver bread. Laver is one of the brown seaweeds, although it can vary in colour. You’ll find it amongst the rock pools floating like a floppy brown cabbage leaf with a slightly seethrough look to it. Out of the water it lies flat looking like a piece of dark cellophane.

Try this recipe for laver bannocks. After careful washing in fresh water bring to the boil and simmer slowly for two to three hours in a little water to soften it. It reduces down when cooked. Give it a quick whiz in a liquidiser and mix the puree with a little bit less than the equivalent volume of medium ground oatmeal, add a touch of seasoning, make into flat cakes and fry gently in a little butter until golden brown on each side. Serve with shellfish or a nice bit of mackerel.

Sea lettuce is stunningly bright green and is wonderful raw in a salad or can be added chopped to soups and stews. If you like sushi use it raw to wrap round the food. Alternatively, dry it gently in the oven or on your clothes line and add it crushed as a flavouring ingredient to soups, stews, sauces, rice dishes and anywhere else your imagination suggests.

Bladder wrack is familiar to anyone who visits the seashore; it has airfilled bladders that pop when you stand on them. Rich in iodine, it is reputed to speed metabolism and so aid weight loss as well as to help with arthritis but don’t rush out and overdose on this; there can be side effects if you take too much iodine in your diet. The occasional tasty meal is fine however and it is a great addition to stir fries, soups and stews. If you cut off a few of the fronds from a plant about two thirds of the way up you’ll get the tenderest bit and the plant will continue to grow. Wash thoroughly then soak in fresh water for about 20 minutes. Chop into two to three centimetre lengths and then add to your dish. Don’t add to dishes that take a long time to cook as it will become gelatinous; it shouldn’t be cooked for more than 20 minutes so add to this type of dish part way through the cooking.

People in the Far East make much wider use of seaweeds in their diets than we do and there are some wonderful recipes. Try this tasty one from Korea; it’s a seaweed soup traditionally served for your birthday in Korea just like we’d make a birthday cake.

Miyeok Guk 3 cups of mixed seaweed 150/200 grams of stewing steak (you could use shellfish instead and alter the process below accordingly) 2 cloves chopped garlic 1 tablespoon sesame oil 2 tablespoons soy sauce 2 pints of water salt and pepper • Thoroughly wash the seaweed in fresh water to get rid of any sand and cut into bite sized pieces • Cut the stewing steak into thin bite sized pieces and marinate with 1 tablespoon of soy sauce, the garlic and a pinch of pepper • Sauté the meat with the sesame oil for 3 or 4 minutes • Add the seaweed and 1 tablespoon of soy sauce and sauté for 4 or 5 minutes.

• Add the water and bring to the boil. Salt and pepper to taste. Simmer for 20 to 30 minutes until the meat is tender.

Serves 4 to 6 For your safety Only collect from a clean shore where the water is constantly being moved and changed by waves and tide. Check the Environment Agency’s web site www.environment-agency.gov.uk for bathing water quality information on your stretch of coastline. Blue Flag status is the highest level of cleanliness.

Avoid collecting anywhere where there are outflows into the sea; this includes industrial as well as sewage outflows; streams flowing into the sea should be treated with suspicion too.

SPETCHELLS CONSERVATION INTEREST GROUP We need help to protect this beautiful and unique chalk grassland which is situated in the Tyne Riverside Country Park at Low Prudhoe. Contained within this habitat are 14 species of butterflies and many unusual solitary bee populations. Unfortunately the area has become threatened by an invasion of Cotoneaster shrubs which are shading the grassland and threatening to overwhelm native plants. More volunteers are needed to remove the invaders!

He then went on to work in Special Effects and worked on films such as Labyrinth, Indiana Jones, Aliens and the Harry Potter films, with some of the biggest names in film such as Steven Spielberg and Ridley Scott.

The event will be hosted by Red Carpet and TV Presenter Andy Oliver and Stormtroopers from the 501st UK Garrison will be patrolling the area.

European angelica also protects against radiation (ultra- violet) by strengthening skin collagen and protects the liver from alcohol damage.

Key ingredients Chinese angelica contains ferulic acid and the key bioactive butylidenephthalide, which is also a flavouring agent. European angelica contains valeric and pungent angelic acids and the increasingly studied bioactive imperatorin.

How to use it European angelica grows well in damp spots - use the root (thought to have more medicinal benefit), leaves or seeds to make a tea or tincture. A tincture is simply the plant (chemical ingredients) extracted by alcohol. Spirits such as gin or vermouths are flavoured with angelica. Roots and seeds can be dried and seeds in soups give a delicious earthy, juniper-like flavour. Crystallised stems make the green confection. The essential oil can be inhaled from a diffuser or massaged in a carrier oil.

As herbal medicine grows in popularity, it’s crucial there is science to support its efficacy, not least to inform clinical practice. The physic garden is rooted in medicinal plants with science to back their traditional use and today it’s an angelic plant. One which, like mugwort, marigold and frankincense, is associated with stories of religious beliefs, but its use from magic to medicine is equally backed by science.

Consult a registered medical herbalist before taking any plant at a medicinal level and inform your health care provider if you are taking medication or have any medical condition. Be sure of the identity of your plant and take only at the recommended dose.

Angelica This majestic herb, in the same family (Apiaceae) as carrot and celery, has over 60 species. The main ones used medicinally are the perennial Chinese A. sinensis and its larger (3m) European biennial sibling A. archangelica (syn. officinalis), which grows well in Northumberland - its purple marked stems, fragrant divided leaves and large umbelliferous cream flowers make this one of the most beautiful medicinal plants.

History & folklore Chinese angelica, known as ‘female ginseng’ or dang guai (meaning proper order) has been used for ‘maintaining perfect health’ and for menstrual and menopausal problems, increasing female sexual desire, as well as treating malaria. European angelica was named as a result of a dream - of an archangel holding out what was then known as wild celery to a monk, who then used it to treat people with the plague in London. The roots were incorporated into the ‘King’s excellent plague recipe’ and the plant was then renamed Angelica archangelica on account of the monk’s dream. Herbalists today use European angelica as a medicine for colds, coughs, pleurisy, rheumatism, urinary diseases, menopause, poor circulation and digestive complaints.

What scientists say Human studies Chinese angelica has a few preliminary studies - it improved pulmonary function in pulmonary hypertension, immunity during cancer chemotherapy and normalised platelet function as well as reduced hot flushes and treated dysmenorrhoea. European angelica has two studies in humans so far, improving mental function in people with Alzheimer’s in one controlled trial, and in another (not controlled) trial in people with other kinds of dementia, it reduced psychotic symptoms like hallucinations.

Lab tests Chinese angelica deters mosquitos – its main chemical BP (butylidenephthalide) is insecticidal. BP has a variety of other biological effects which include killing microbes like bacteria. Though not yet tested on the plague-causing bacteria (Yersina pestis) - usually transmitted via fleas - it stops the growth of bacteria like Clostridium difficile and Enterococcus faecalis, as well as fungi like Candida albicans and viruses like herpes simplex. In lab tests European angelica lowers anxiety - due to the chemical imperatorin, which

Safety European angelica is considered safe, but not recommended at medicinal dose in pregnancy, diabetics or for long-term use. Chinese angelica’s various contraindications (increasing effects of anticoagulants, potentially abortive and phototoxic) mean it should be used only with professional guidance - as for other Chinese herbal medicine. Neither are to be confused with similar looking but deadly hemlock. Dose As a guide the quantity recommend of European root is 2-5g and Chinese root 0.5-5g daily - consult a reputable publication or medical herbalist for exact dose.

Science scares 2: what’s in a name?

Last time we looked at some scare stories that arise from misunderstanding of science. This time we focus on just two words that rightly raise some concerns but often generate more fear than they should because of their associations in many people’s minds.

The first is ‘nuclear’. The really negative image here is of nuclear weapons: their threat hung over the years of the Cold War between the western nations and the Communist USSR and continues today in political tensions and a desire to prevent their wider availability, especially to terrorist groups. The bombs dropped on Japan at the end of World War 2 were devastating and horrifying at the time, but far more powerful weapons have been developed and stockpiled since then. I’m sure most of us would wish them all away.

Nuclear weapons represent a deliberately uncontrolled release of some of the huge amount of energy that holds together the ingredients of atomic nuclei, the dense tiny centres of atoms that make up all the elements of the physical substances around and within us. Some atomic nuclei, especially the heavier ones such as uranium, are naturally unstable and change into other nuclei with the release of energy. If this is carefully controlled, the energy can be peacefully and constructively used, and this is the basis of nuclear power stations. These, of course, generate not only electricity but also strongly polarised opinions: while nuclear energy has much in its favour compared with burning fossil fuels, it does raise issues of security and safety, as we saw in the major incidents at Chernobyl and Fukushima, as well as the problem of dealing with the radioactive waste products. This is one of many examples of science and technology that are morally neutral in themselves, but can be used for both good and evil.

Unfortunately the negative aspects make ‘nuclear’ a scary word. But it actually just means something to do with a nucleus: atomic nuclei have other interesting and useful properties too, and there are other kinds of nucleus (it just means core or centre) – we can talk of a nuclear family without implying the parents and children are radioactive! Some atomic nuclei can behave as tiny magnets and this leads to a scientific technique called nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), a way of exploring the surroundings of these atoms in a material. It’s widely used in physics, chemistry and biology. In medical applications its main target is water molecules in the body, which give different NMR effects for different tissues and can be used in all sorts of diagnoses. It uses large magnets together with radio waves, and many people have experienced and benefited from this. It’s completely harmless if you don’t have any metal implants in your body. To avoid scaring people, however, the N word is avoided and it’s called magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) instead.

The second scare word is ‘genetic’, which means to do with genes, the inherited sections of our DNA that control the production of proteins and other ways in which our bodies work. We considered the ‘genetic code’, the information content of DNA, in an earlier article. Scientists also talk about genetic disorders (inherited problems), genetic

manipulation, and genetic engineering. This gives the impression of interfering with natural processes. While such intervention has been made for generations in medical and surgical procedures and most of us have no objection to the use of operations, medicine and anaesthetics, tinkering with DNA at the molecular level worries many, because it raises images of unnatural creatures, designer babies, and ‘playing God’ with life. Concern is expressed about genetic modification of food crops, especially in the UK and EU, though traditional plant (and animal) breeding is also a form of genetic modification, albeit it slower and less finely controlled: the fruit, vegetables and particularly cereals we eat now are very different from those of much earlier ages.

Just as with nuclear energy, genetic engineering is morally neutral in itself: it is an ability we can put to good or bad use. Developing food crops that are resistant to diseases, give better nutrition or higher yields, or without harmful side-effects is a good thing, and making them less susceptible to pest damage is preferable to widespread use of chemical agents that have other undesirable impacts – it will be difficult to feed a growing world population without such changes; but deliberately making crops infertile so that new seeds have to be bought every year from the rich multinational companies controlling the industry is morally questionable or worse. Much objection to some recently developed medical genetic procedures is fuelled by lack of understanding, misinformation, or inflammatory and misleading descriptions. These new techniques raise serious ethical issues; because something becomes technically possible does not mean it should be done. Unfortunately a society that is losing its acceptance of values such as objective truth and universal standards in favour of individual choice and relative truth is poorly equipped to address those issues, and science cannot generate its own ethics without other input; where should they come from?

Tynedale retirees go for broke Retired? Fancy a bit of walking in the countr yside, but not on your own. Or perhaps you’d like to have lunch out in convivial company? You sound like an ideal member for one of the five U3As in the Tyne Valley Express circulation area.

U3A? It stands for University of the Third Age, but it ’s by no means as formidable as it sounds. There are no syllabuses, no tutors, no exams, no grades or certificates, just ordinar y people doing things they enjoy and learning as they go. As we know, all kinds of activity, physical, intellectual or social, help to keep us healthy and stave off the problems of loneliness.

Our local U3A branches are at Whickham, Ryton, Ponteland, Prudhoe and Tynedale (Hexham). They all have websites which explain how they work and what activities are available. Each U3A organises a monthly meeting with a speaker and all members are welcome. In addition the members organise their own activity groups. A good mental model is of a circle of participants, all of whom share their knowledge, skills and experience. It is fully democratic, each group deciding where and when to meet, choosing a person to be the informal leader (often called a convenor) and deciding on the group’s programme.

Some activities are popular in most U3As – languages at various levels, music appreciation, walking, carpet bowls, scrabble, art appreciation. Others are slightly more exotic.

You can play in a jazz group at Prudhoe, spend days

exploring and researching Hadrian’s Wall in Tynedale, enjoy trips out using your bus pass in Ponteland or take part in bird watching at Ryton or Tynedale.

Each U3A is a member of the national Third Age Trust which runs summer schools, there is a regional committee with its own activities, specialised talks and the like, and the whole is part of an international movement. But you don’t need to worr y about all that, just get involved with your local branch and enjoy the group activities which suit you. And if an activity is provided at a neighbouring U3A but not in your own you can attend that group as a guest.

The U3A slogan is “Learn, laugh and live, meet people, learn new skills and have fun.” So get cracking.
