Dear Zoo Friends, A lot can happen in a year, especially at a living institution such as a zoo. Distilling 365 days’ worth of animal news, events, and accomplishments into a single report grows more challenging every year—as our staff reaches new heights of innovation, our conservation efforts expand within and beyond our gates, and we forge new and diverse partnerships throughout the community. The highlights presented on these pages are not exhaustive, but a sampling of the amazing work that takes place here every day. The past year was one of transition in leadership for both the Zoo and GLAZA. Each of us began our current roles as the 2018–19 fiscal year was coming to a close. Together, we are committed to continuing the Zoo’s tradition of excellence in animal care while charting the course to an even more exciting future. That future will be guided by the Zoo’s Vision Plan, which recently entered its environmental impact report phase. We are now setting the stage for a major fundraising campaign that will bring this transformational, visionary plan to fruition. This summer we also welcomed Dr. Jake Owens as our new Director of Conservation—the first position in the Zoo’s history dedicated solely to wildlife conservation. Jake is helping us develop a strategic plan that will broaden the Zoo’s conservation efforts, which you’ll learn more about in these pages over the coming year. As you peruse this review, please know that everything on these pages was made possible because of you—our members, donors, and friends. We thank you for your leadership support.

NEW ARRIVALS LEFT TO RIGHT: Notable newcomers to the Zoo include a caiman lizard, a green aracari, and a maned wolf. Many of these acquisitions were transfers recommended by Species Survival Plan programs coordinated by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). These programs are necessary to ensure genetic diversity in zoo populations. The Zoo also provided refuge to several Asian songbirds, including oriental magpie-robins and red-whiskered bulbuls, that were confiscated by wildlife authorities after being smuggled into LAX.

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: The year’s notable births and hatchings include 14 knob-tailed geckos, two Coquerel’s sifakas, two southern pudu, three Cape porcupines, and twin Tadjik markhors. Due to illness, one of the “porcupettes” (as baby porcupines are called) was hand-reared by nursery staff.

HIGH-RISE HANGOUT The crew from Animal Planet’s Treehouse Masters created a fantastic, multilevel treehouse for the François langur troop. Watch the monkeys (and their keepers) react to the big reveal on the Zoo’s YouTube channel: youtube.com/TheLosAngelesZoo.

FISCAL YEAR 2018-2019

ur commitment to conservation extends from local classrooms to distant countries, encompassing everything from fieldwork to funding to educational endeavors. Among last year’s efforts, nine students and three L.A. Animal Keeper Roxane Losey traveled to KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, to help establish an equine anti-poaching unit to safeguard rhinos and other wildlife—an extension of work she has performed with the nonprofit Global Conservation Force. With funding from the Zoo Conservation Fund and the L.A. chapter of the American Association of Zoo Keepers (AAZK), Losey provided equipment, training for riders, and expert advice.

As part of the AZA’s annual Party for the Planet celebration, the L.A. Zoo partnered with the Aquarium of the Pacific to coordinate a series of “Spring into Action” projects. A grant from Disney helped underwrite the cost of the events, which encouraged public engagement in environmental projects. PICTURED ABOVE: In June, two groups of Zoo recruits ventured to Santa Cruz Island to assist with habitat restoration.

CONSERVATION KUDOS

Bird Keeper Samantha Derman was honored by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) for five years of conservation service for her work as studbook keeper for the sacred ibis. Studbook keepers document all births, deaths, and transfers for their particular species in AZA-accredited zoos, but their duties go beyond recordkeeping to encompass population analysis and breeding recommendations.

The Los Angeles Zoo continued to lead the charge in California condor conservation with the implementation of a double-brooding technique not previously attempted by any other zoo. The new approach allows the adult birds to foster more than one chick, thus increasing the number of condors that can be released into the wild with a high chance of success. The Zoo tested this process in 2017, when there was a surplus of chicks. Instead of hand-raising these chicks, staff placed two chicks with a foster female, Anyapa, who successfully raised both. Those chicks have since been returned to the wild and have adapted well to their new surroundings. “Parent-reared birds tend to be better prepared for release,” says Curator of Birds Mike Maxcy. The six chicks hatched during the 2019 breeding season were all double-brooded. They will remain at the Zoo for the next two years under the care of condor foster parents, with the goal of eventually being released to the wild.

C E N T E R S TA G E California condor Hope made her public debut as part of the World of Birds Show cast on February 28, 2019. She is the first of her species to participate in a free-flight demonstration. Due to a wing injury sustained as a chick, Hope is unable to fly well enough to survive in the wild. Sharing her unique story with Bird Show guests helps spread awareness about this critically endangered species.

T

he Los Angeles Zoo continued to expand its outreach and community engagement efforts. New partnerships with the Los Angeles Public Library, the California Science Center, and the Community Nature Connection allowed us to provide members of underserved and underrepresented communities with access to the Zoo. In January 2019, our staff supported area parents affected by the LAUSD teachers’ strike, providing free admission to students (and $5 tickets for chaperones). Special sessions of the all-day Safari Days program were added, providing a nurturing, supervised space for 264 children during the six-day strike.

POINTS OF PRIDE CLOCKWISE FROM TOP: The Zoo hosted 129,577 children and their chaperones on field trips last year. GLAZA raised more than $121,000 for scholarships, sending 43 kids to Zoo Camp and providing free transportation and admission to 5,383 students through Zoo Pals. An additional 3,033 Title 1 students attended our Animals Up Close school program free of charge. The Learning & Engagement Division introduced new programs to help people feel welcome in nature, including Self-Care Saturdays and Family Nature Club. The L.A. Zoo demonstrated its support of the LGBTQ+ community by lighting the front entry in rainbow colors during Pride Month in June. The dazzling display conveyed the Zoo’s embrace of diversity and its role as a safe and welcoming place for all.

FISCAL YEAR 2018-2019

E

ach year the Zoo hosts numerous special events designed to enhance visitors’ enjoyment, attract new guests, raise money for Zoo programs, and provide unique educational opportunities. Always the biggest bash of the year, the Beastly Ball raised about $1.2 million. The gala honored world-renowned oceanographer Dr. Sylvia Earle, a National Geographic Explorer in Residence and the first female chief scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Also honored at the event were retired GLAZA President Connie Morgan, and Glen Curado, founder of World Harvest Charities and Family Services, a local nonprofit that provides food and other essentials to Californians in need. World Harvest Food Bank has surplus produce that cannot be distributed quickly enough to people, so they donate tons of it to the Zoo each month to help feed our animals and prevent food waste.

PUDU & POP STAR When the Zoo posted a pudu birth announcement last December, online commenters pointed out that the fawn bore a likeness to Korean pop star Haechan. The Zoo capitalized on the buzz by crowdfunding the newborn’s naming rights. The fundraising goal was quickly exceeded, and the diminutive deer was named Haechan. The pop star met his namesake during a Zoo visit in May 2019. The innovative social media campaign earned the Zoo a trophy at the 55th Annual Prism Awards, honoring the best in Los Angeles-area public relations.

$1.2 MILLION RAISED AT THE 2019 BEASTLY BALL

PARTIES WITH A PURPOSE Keeper Elaine Chu and gopher snake Griffin delight Beastly Ball guests. Zoo-goers took to social media to show #TonsOfLove for pachyderms during Asian Elephant Awareness Month. Families stroll through the ZooLights’ Twinkle Tunnel. Curator of Mammals Candace Sclimenti had the rapt attention of chimps and guests at Cocktails with the Curator. e are deeply grateful to the individual, corporate, and foundation donors who generously support the Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association and the Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens. With ever-increasing pressure on wildlife worldwide, our work has never been more important nor donations more critical. We applaud the dedication and patronage of our donors, members, and partners who have invested in one of our community’s shining assets.

A new home for endangered Cape Griffon vultures is in the works thanks to a $2.7 million gift from the Fritz B. Burns Foundation.

C U M U L AT I V E G I V I N G The Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association proudly recognizes the following individuals, corporations, and foundations who have contributed cumulative gifts of $25,000 and above from January 1, 1985, to June 30, 2019. These generous gifts include cash, grants, bequests, and/or securities. They represent the highest level of philanthropy and commitment to GLAZA and the Zoo. These donors enable us to build state-of-the-art animal exhibits, support critical species conservation programs at the Zoo and around the globe, provide funds for innovative animal health care and education programs, and secure the future of the Zoo by building a strong endowment. We celebrate and thank these generous benefactors.
