FORT WORTH STOCKYARDS LONGHORN AUCTION

Welcome

to this Historical event, bringing the Texas Longhorns back home to the original Fort Worth Stockyard Auction Arena, where the west began. More than five million cattle a year were traded at this Auction Arena in the early 1900s, with as many as 2,600 pens. It is especially exciting to reopen the Auction Arena with a Texas Longhorn Sale, after being closed for more than a decade. There are 100 head of spectacular Longhorns consigned to this historic sale. We thank our wonderful consignors for bringing an exceptional showcase of animals. The Sponsors of this sale are dynamic leaders in the Industry and community, and have consigned extraordinary selections from their programs that will have an impact on the Longhorn Industry. This is the first sale to ever offer four 90+" horned animals under one sale roof. The Hudson and Valentine mission of bringing new marketing opportunities to the industry, along with marketing elite cattle, continues to be strong. We thank each of our Consignors for supporting and participating in this mission. A special thanks to the UMB Bank of Fort Worth, the Majestic Realty Group, Fort Worth Heritage Development Group, Superior Livestock, and the Hyatt Hotel. We are grateful for their support on this tremendous journey of “Bringing the Texas Longhorns Home to Fort Worth. Enjoy your time in the Historic Fort Worth Stockyards. It is packed with things to do and see, and we hope you take advantage of seeing it all.

Dear Friends, It is with great delight that we celebrate with the Fort Worth Stockyards Longhorn Auction in Fort Worth on September 30 – October 1, 2016. For over 100 years the Fort Worth Stockyards have been the center of the cattle trading industry in the south. As we move forward with Majestic Realty to redevelop the Stockyards we welcome the chance to once again host Longhorn cattle in the Historic auction arena. The Fort Worth herd established in 1999 has been a wonderful tradition seen by thousands of visitors each year. Twice a day we drive the majestic Longhorn steers down Exchange Avenue just as they did at the turn of the century. Fort Worth owes a great deal of its original development to the cattle industry and no other breed has made more of an impact than the longhorn. Our city logo even carries the distinctive image of a Texas Longhorn. We hope that all of you will savor your time and enjoy the unique mix of cultural activities found only “Where the West Begins.” On behalf of the city of Fort Worth we welcome you back home.

Sincerely,

Betsy Price Mayor

THANK YOU TO THE SPONSORS OF THIS YEAR’S FORT WORTH STOCKYARDS LONGHORN AUCTION

UMB Financial Corporation The story of UMB Financial Corporation is a success story in the best tradition of American free enterprise. From a storefront bank in Kansas City, Mo., with first-day deposits of $1,100 in 1913, it has grown to become a diversified financial services holding company with multi-billion dollar assets. Much of UMB’s success can be attributed to the leadership of multiple generations of the Kemper family.

Jeanne and Richard Filip-Bentwood Ranch Jeanne and Richard began their journey into Longhorn cattle in 2000 when Jeanne gave Richard a Longhorn steer for his birthday to celebrate his years at the University of Texas (yeah Bevo). At that time, they were raising Charolaise cattle. It wasn’t long before their eyes turned to the color and unique personality traits of Stormy, their Longhorn steer, while the Charolaise cattle soon became bland and uninteresting. Within two weeks, they dispersed the herd and began their fascinating and rewarding experience of raising Registered Texas Longhorn cattle.

Rebecca and John Wampler-T BAR W Situated in the East Texas Piney Woods, the T BAR W Longhorn herd has grown benefiting from temperate seasonal climate, improved pastures of sandy loam soil, deep well water filled ponds, and irrigated pastures of coastal Tifton Bermuda grass. Pastures and alley ways are secured with slick wire leading to purpose built working pens all designed with the gentle quality of life for the herd at the forefront. Over the last seven years, select cows and heifers have been acquired whose prodigy has been sired by T BAR W owned proven horn producers, SDR Spartacus and RML Lone Star. Not only bred for horn, but more importantly gentle temperament. With results confirmed and proven by five figures sales at auction and private treaty, along with the acceptance of T BAR W branded Steer Imperial Chex (85” TTT) into the Fort Worth herd to participate in twice daily cattle drives and the Texas History education programs at the Historic Fort Worth Stockyards, T BAR W Ranch strives to further develop a successful tradition. T BAR W’s “sexed” embryo program will soon be introduced and is expected to create a major impact on Longhorn breeding selection. The program is set to reduce the generation interval for animals with a specific desirable trait.

Ursula Allen-Allen Ranch Allen Ranch, Raising Cattle with History. The ranch is located in Harper, Texas which is in the beautiful Texas Hill country. The Allen Ranch has been raising Longhorn cattle since 1992, and during that time, they have built a magnificent set of cattle. They are recognized in the Longhorn Industry as breeding and raising some of the best Longhorn cattle.

Debbie Bowman- End of Trail Ranch The ranch is located in the famous Flint Hills south of Latham, Kansas that has some of the richest bluestem grass in the country. At “End of Trail Ranch,” they are breeding and raising Longhorn cattle to meet the growing demand for the total package animal. They have acquired and raised some of the top genetics in the Longhorn breed today to achieve this goal. They have 300 breeding age cows and heifers in their herd that have some pretty impressive horn measurements. Their herd sires have produced some of the rising stars of the Longhorn breed today in Longhorn events. All of their cattle are eligible for all Futurities.

Bow Carpenter-BC Cattle Company Bow is a strong supporter and participant at Texas Longhorn events including the Longhorn World Championship and the Texas Longhorn Legacy Sale. Bow is a selective buyer, adding excellent genetics to his breeding program. His sale consignments always bring top prices. If Bow is not out in the pasture with his Longhorns, he is out pursuing his other passions which include hunting and auto racing.

Mark D. Gilliland MD- Gilliland Ranch LLC The Gilliland ranching history is a blend of a Scotch Irish ancestry – a banker/rancher, three cattle ranchers, and a doctor/rancher. Mark’s great grandmother’s brother, JJ Willson (1856-138), was president of the local bank and first purchased property in 1890 just south of the prairie town Hooser. The town thrived on the commerce of the Missouri Pacific Railroad which ran a daily train through Hooser shipping cattle (10,000 head/year) and prairie hay (15,000 tons/year) out of the Flint Hills. When cattle and hay started being shipped on trucks instead of trains, the railroad closed and Hooser became virtually extinct. Mark’s grandmother’s lifetime bachelor brothers, Mike and Brady Meldrum (1888-1962), bought the town real estate in 1951. They became wealthy buying undernourished yearlings in Eastern New Mexico and shipping them to the Flint Hills tall grass where they gained 3-4 pounds/day. They taught the ranching business to Mark’s father, Jim Gilliland (1925-2010), and he subsequently managed the ranch for 50 years. He was a major innovator in rotational pasture grazing and grass management to maximize weight gain in commercial cattle and simultaneously improve grass quality. This was the primary reason that he was inducted into the Kansas Cowboy Hall of Fame in Dodge City for ranch management. After spending 30 years in Texas practicing medicine, Mark returned to the ranch to carry on the 4th generation of ranching tradition. They currently have a herd of over 100 registered Texas Longhorns and have a strong CV Casanova foundation. They recently sold Casanova to the Bill Hudson/Tyson Leonard Partnership and now use the herd sires RC Tsunami 2, Monaco Chex, JBR Eclipse, and JBR Networth. Their plan is to continue to strategically stack pedigrees with other promising outcross bulls and continue to maximize horn growth.

Linda and Tom Harman-TK Ranch TK Ranch Cattle Company, is home to a “team” of quality registered Longhorns! They are located on the scenic Willow City Loop, just north of Fredericksburg, Texas. Much research has gone into “drafting” their “A” team of quality Longhorn cows with great “stats” of pedigrees and massive horns. These Longhorn cows are championship quality and are currently bred to some topnotch “1st string” bulls, which have been their foundation in kicking off this adventure. Although it was not in their game plan to retire from the game this soon, they need to step aside from coaching and let some other fellow Longhorn Breeders take them to the Super Bowl. God Bless Texas and Hook ‘em Horns!

Tyson Leonard-Leonard Ranch Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of southwest Virginia along the scenic New River, Leonard Ranch is home to some of the most elite Texas Longhorns in the breed. The ranch is home to over 100 Longhorns and registered Paint and Quarter horses. It is one of the prettiest places east of the Mississippi. The rustic décor and the mountainous environment is why Tyson Leonard loves to call the ranch his home. Tyson was heavily involved in the horse business for years, and he won his first Longhorn. While attending a horse sale in Gettysburg, PA, he wound up in a card game with a fellow at the sale. Tyson won and instead of money, took a Longhorn. He brought the old Longhorn home, and he ended up liking him. While horses had been his focus at that point in his life, he grew up around cattle. His father had three stockyards, and from the time he was five, he knew how that “stuff will go through your toes.” He met the late Paul Babington at the Gilley Production Sale, and they went on to be lifelong friends. Paul turned out to be one of the best friends Tyson ever had.

Judy and Bill Meridith- Tall Grass Cattle Company Bill and Judy Meridith are the owners of Tallgrass Cattle Company in Wellington, KS, where they maintain a select herd of Longhorn cattle. They have acquired some of the industry’s most elite cattle, including the record-setting purchase of EOT Outback Beauty at the Legacy II and SDR Candy Cane at the Legacy IV. In addition to Texas Longhorns, the Meridith’s have various other successful business interests. Among their proudest is the building of the Christian school WCA. Enrollment at WCA in the past years has reached 100+ students, a dramatic increase from the original enrollment of 4 students. Bill and Judy look forward to another year of success within and outside of the Longhorn industry.

Lynn Struthoff & Josie Becker-Struthoff Ranch Struthoff Ranch has been breeding registered Texas Longhorns since 1996. They have always had interest in the Texas Longhorn breed. When they needed an agricultural exemption on a small ranch they bought near Blanco, Texas, they decided to purchase 10 head to meet the requirements for the exemption. From that time on, their herd has grown to 250 head plus. They are continually adding new genetics to their herd, in addition to blending with their older genetics with successful results. Their main herd sire is Hubbell’s Rio 007, a son of the great JP Rio Grande. “007” has sired over 180 calves for them and all are very correct. Two junior herd sires, SR Clout, a Jamakizm grandson and SR Proficient, also a Jamakizm grandson, are currently breeding several heifers. Both will be breeding the many great Hubbell’s Rio 007 daughters. Please view their website for further information. www.struthoff-ranch.com

For the drovers herding longhorn cattle up the Chisholm Trail to the rail heads, Fort Worth was the last major stop for rest and supplies. Beyond Fort Worth, they would have to deal with crossing the Red River into Indian Territory. Between 1866 and 1890, more than four million head of cattle were trailed through Fort Worth, which was soon known as “Cowtown. The new Livestock Exchange Building in its present location, as well as the pens and the barns were also started in 1902. The new building was designed to house the many livestock commission companies, telegraph offices, railroad offices and other support businesses. Business boomed with the opening of the packing houses. Armour and Swift bought 265,279 cattle, 128,934 hogs and 40,160 sheep, which brought over six million dollars into the local economy. A livestock market that drew local farmers and ranchers had finally arrived in Fort Worth At the height of World War I in 1917, the Fort Worth Stockyards was the largest horse and mule market in the world. Military officers from Allied countries came to purchase the animals to support their war efforts. During World War II, the Fort Worth Stockyards processed 5,277,496 head of livestock making 1944 the peak year of the entire operation. In later years, sales at the Stockyards began to decline and by 1969 had dwindled to a mere 1,045,158 head. By 1986, sales reached an all-time low of 57,181 animals.

8

FORT WORTH STOCKYARDS LONGHORN AUCTION

Many reasons for the decline of the Fort Worth Stockyards can be given, but one of the largest factors was the rise of the trucking industry on the newly paved roads after World War II. Because of their lower operating cost and greater flexibility, much of the advantage that railroads had in bulk shipping was lost. The market moved to the shipper with the creation of local livestock auctions and feedlots. It was a completely new way to market livestock. Not only was Fort Worth affected, all the major packers in the United States struggled with this new way to market livestock. While local auctions continued to be held in the Stockyards, the volume diminished until it was unprofitable to continue. This vibrant part of Fort Worth history fell on hard times as the Stockyars area continued to decline. Weekly livestock auctions ceased many years ago, Now a revitalization of the stockyards is underway with a private public partnership . Majestic Reality and the Hickman Family have joined together creating the Fort Worth Heritage Development along with the City of Fort Worth. This project includes the improvements for over 70 acres of Stockyard multi use development. Many thousand head of cattle are still sold in the Stockyards every week via Superior Livestock video/satellite sales originating in the Exchange Building. The livestock legacy lives on.

More than history, we are Texas Heritage. You might think after 94 years of making handcrafted, custom boots, we would have taken a few shortcuts. On the contrary, we still make our boots in the same time-honored way M.L. did when he first began as a young, energetic Texan in the 1920s. He set a standard of quality that just can’t be matched in any other way. Alongside our boots, we also have the most impressive selection of men’s and women’s fashions, jewelry, belts, buckles, hats, accessories, and tailored clothing anywhere in the Western world. We invite you to come in for a visit, and we’ll show you the passion that goes into every pair of Leddy’s custom, handmade boots.
