Choose a proportional flat-screen TV Viewing distance matters Lisa Evans Postmedia News A family room staple, the size of the TV is often a source of disagreement and largely depends on whether the man or woman of the house is making the decision. But, ultimately, screen size should depend on a number of factors, says interior designer Linda Nolan, including how far away you’re sitting and where the TV is in the room. Consider these four factors when choosing a new TV.

Housing boom still ripe for growth

Rid yourself, and your car of those awful odours Reena Nerbas For Postmedia News Q: Is using vegetable oil on a new butcher block a good idea? Or, do I need to use some mineral oil or something like that? A: For everyday cleaning, wipe butcher block with dish soap and water, and rinse with water. To sanitize, combine one part white vinegar into a spray bottle with four parts water. Spray and leave for 10 minutes, and then wipe. When the time comes to oil butcher block, food-grade mineral oil is recommended. It prevents the wood from smelling rancid over time. Butcher block is beautiful and durable, and can last for many years if cared for properly. Q: I needed to replace a vehicle and my husband was kind enough to do the search and find a preowned one that is in good repair. But it smells of cigarette smoke and possibly pets. The cigarette smell is the primary concern because I don’t find it easy to tolerate with mild allergies. I don’t know how to get it out. A: Begin by thoroughly vacuuming and cleaning the interior of the vehicle including all vinyl, leather, carpet and upholstery. You may want to take this project on yourself or hire a professional. After the interior is clean, place an open bag of activated charcoal or cat litter in the vehicle for several weeks. Also, instead of using car fresheners, store an open bar of soap in the car. When the fresh soap smell fades, grate the side of the soap with your keys, and the soap will once again freshen the air inside your vehicle. I do this, and my vehicle smells great. Feedback from Readers Who Care: Another trick for peeling hard-boiled eggs quickly is to cool eggs with cold water, drain and then give the pot a good shake to crack the egg shells. Then immerse the eggs in cold water for easy peeling. Normally, I have to wear nonsynthetic socks and leather shoes to avoid foot odours. However once in a while I’ll slip and wear a pair of gift socks or such, and then there’s trouble. One day, after my mor ning shower I rubbed a bit of antiperspirant on my finger and applied it between and under my toes. There was a bit of a tingling sensation at first, but later in the day the evidence was in: no foot odour. What a simple and elegant solution — no more baking soda foot baths or messy foot powders. Underarm deodorant is also “undertoe” deodorant. Amazing! Timely Tips for Cleaning Water Bottles The bottom of your water bottle is caked with crumbs and debris from dishwasher sediment. Gross! But, help is on the way. ■■ Fill the bottle with a small amount of vinegar, dish soap and water. Close the lid and shake (not yourself, the bottle). Open the lid and rinse. ■■ For plastic bottles, use a long knife with a rounded end to dig out any stuck on food. Rinse with water. ■■ For metal bottles, use a rubber band to secure a small rag onto the end of a narrow handle of a plastic spatula. Scrub the bottom of the bottle and rinse with water. ■■ Do not use boiling water on a metal bottle as it could misshape the bottle. ■■ Buy a baby bottle brush for cleaning water bottles, if this is an ongoing chore. Stu Niebergall Following two very strong years in 2012 and 2013 with new housing starts of over 3,000 each year, all the forecasters are predicting we will have a more moderate year in 2014. However, when we put their prognostications into context, we can see that, in fact, 2014 should be another very active and exciting year for the new home building industry in Regina. In January of 2013 there was not an economist in the nation who predicted Regina’s new housing starts would exceed those of 2012. Since the Regina & Region Home Builders’ Association (RRHBA) has been keeping records, the 3,122 starts in 2013 has only been exceeded by those in 1974, when there were 3,497 housing starts that year. As such, 2013 was a very good year for housing starts in Regina. This has also been one of the rare years that Regina housing starts outpaced Saskatoon’s, which also had a strong new housing market of 2,980 starts in 2013.

Single detached home starts were slightly lower in 2013 than they were in 2012. However, they were still over 30.6 per cent higher than the five year average and 37.5 per cent above the 10 year average. The multi-unit market exploded over the past few years with a record 1,876 starts in 2013. In 2013 multi-unit housing starts, which are made up of a diversity of housing forms, made up 60 per cent of the housing market in the Regina area, with single detached homes constituting the other 40 per cent. That, in comparison to the record year 40 years ago, in which single detached homes made up 71 per cent of the new housing market, demonstrates how our city building form continues to evolve and become more diverse. In sharp contrast to that of Saskatchewan, for the overall Canadian housing market, 2013 was actually a disappointing year, and some economists and pundits are predicting the Canadian housing market will be worse in 2014 than it was in 2013. However, others are expecting some growth as interest rates are expected to continue to stay low through 2014. Bank of Canada Governor Stephen Poloz is suggesting a “gradual slowing of housing sales and starts” or

what is often called a soft landing. However, Royal LePage CEO, Phil Soper, says “Talk of a ’soft landing’ for Canada’s real estate market in the new year is misguided.” Soper goes on to say, “We expect no landing, no slowdown, and no correction in the near-term. Conditions are ripe for as strong a market as we saw in the postrecessionary rebound of the last decade.” What is Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) saying? They are forecasting that the prairie provinces will remain stable in 2014. They predict that Alberta will see slight gains from the 34,200 starts in 2013 to 34,900. Manitoba is expected to also increase from 7,100 in 2013 to 7,400 in 2014. And for Saskatchewan, they predict new housing starts will moderate from 8,400 in 2013 to 8,000 in 2014. CMHC has stated that for Regina, “Heightened supply levels and lower net migration will inhibit new home construction this year and next. Given these factors and the addition of higher active listings in Regina’s resale market, local builders will be motivated to scale back production of new homes as we move into next year.” CMHC has set its 2014 forecast at 1,150 single detached and 1,600

multi-unit new homes starts, for a combined 2,750 housing starts in Regina for 2014. To put all of this into perspective, even if CMHC is accurate in its forecast, you can still count on a continuation of a very healthy new housing market in Regina in 2014. Putting a ‘slow down’ into context, one can see that new housing starts in 2014 would need to be reduced by 35 per cent to be consistent with the five year average, which was very healthy, and would still be 12 per cent over the 10 year average. As such, 2014 should be another very active and exciting year for the new home building industry in Regina. Wherever the 2014 housing starts finish up, you can still count on this — members of our association will continue to respond to the demand for quality housing in a diversity of options to fit the entire market. Staving off the big chill indoors Lauren La Rose The Canadian Press TORONTO — Plunging temperatures have the potential to create a headache for homeowners who may face the risk of freezing pipes if appropriate measures aren’t taken. Ralph Suppa, president and general manager of The Canadian Institute of Plumbing & Heating (ciph. com), shares tips on how to help prevent the problem from arising.

Insulate exposed pipes “In some cases, people in the basement have one of those laundry tubs, and you usually have pipes running up the wall that are connected to another pipe upstairs,” said Suppa. Insulation can be purchased inexpensively for pipes in the basement touching an outside wall or one located outside and not properly covered, he adds. Insulation is “the shape of the pipe — which is usually half-inch copper — and there’s a slit down the (middle) … so all it does is it wraps it around automati-

cally for you,” he said. Have a hose hooked up in the backyard? Remove it. Suppa says there is usually a shut-off valve located inside underneath the sink where the hose is connected. “They should shut off that valve and open the valve outside so all of the water drips out. This way, you’re not going to be concerned about the pipes bursting.”

Turn on your taps “There’s pressure built up in the pipes, and if the water’s not moving and that pipe is exposed to cold, then it could freeze,” said Suppa. “So what you’d need to do … is you open up the faucet a little bit … Because the water’s moving, it’s not going to freeze as rapidly as it could have if it was just sitting in the pipe.” He suggests opening faucets about one-quarter of the way to help relieve pressure in the pipes. Turn off the main shut-off valve. In the event of a prolonged power outage — say two or three days — Suppa recommends turning off the main shut-off valve which controls water coming into the house.

You might have heard of the new federal regulations that came into effect Jan. 1. Basically, manufacturers can no longer supply 75- and 100-watt incandescent light bulbs to Canadian retailers. Retailers can sell off any stock they have left, but once that’s gone it is lights out for those bulbs. Next on the chopping block are 40- and 60-watt incandescent light bulbs, which will no longer be produced come Dec. 31, 2014. Is this a step in the right direction? Absolutely. The ban might be a shocker to some homeowners — sales are slightly up for the bulbs since the Jan. 1 regulations came into effect as homeowners stock up — but it’s old news for British Columbians. Their provincial government started to phase out 75- and 100-watt incandescent bulbs back in early 2011. The U.S. has already started to phase out 40- and 60- watt incandescent bulbs this year, and they seem to be doing just fine with the adjustment. There has been some resistance to the switch — you can find at least half a dozen blogs where people are complaining about paying more to light up and make the switch. But like it or not folks, this is what the industry is moving toward. And it’s not a bad thing. The phase-out might seem sudden, but it’s been coming down the pipeline for a while now. It was originally scheduled for 2012 but got pushed to 2014 to give manu-

The new Canadian ban on incandescent light bulbs, which came into effect on Jan. 1, encourages homeowners to use more energy-efficient lighting around the home, like LEDs. facturers time to adjust and develop product alter natives. The result? More options for homeowners interested in saving on their energy bill, better, more innovative products and a drop in price for alternative lighting options, such as compact fluorescents, known as CFLs, and halogen bulbs. But which ones get my vote? Light-emitting diodes, or LEDs, all the way. Halogen light bulbs are the most like incandescent but they don’t last as long and aren’t as energyefficient as CFLs and LEDs. And CFLs, which contain mercury and can emit ultraviolet radiation, are cheaper than LEDs but they aren’t as safe or as efficient as LEDs. When it’s cold, CFLs take time to warm up and are sometimes too dim. Plus, most CFLs can’t be used on a dimmer, and when they can they don’t work as effi-

ciently. I’ve been using LEDs for years now and in my home, in the homes of the people we help on the show. We also started to use LED work lights on my job sites — my crew loves them. And we even use LEDs to light some sets for the show. With average use, LEDs can last at least 22 years or 25,000 hours. CFLs last only about 8,000 to 10,000 hours and halogen bulbs a measly 2,500 to 5,000 hours — but they’re still a better choice than incandescent, which last only 1,000 hours. And when it comes to product innovation, LEDs lead the way. Most LEDs can be used on dimmers, which use about 20 per cent less energy, so the energy savings are twofold. You can also get LEDs for under-cabinet lighting, which is great for the kitchen and bar. There are also plug-in, battery-operated LED night

lights that are motion-activated. They stay off during the day, detect movement up to 30 feet, have glow modes and last about one year. There are even LED-lit back plates that are mini LED fixtures that live inside the junction boxes of single-gang outlets and light switches. They stay on 24 hours a day but use less than one watt of energy. I’ve heard of a lot of people complain about how expensive LEDs are. Yes, they cost more to buy, but they pay for themselves. The money you save on energy and not having to buy more bulbs — not to mention the benefits to the environment — don’t compare.
