Check details in extensive makeover White trim helps lighten things up Jeffrey Fisher Postmedia News Q: My husband and I are planning to renovate our two-storey house that we have lived and raised our children in for the past 25 years. It’s a traditional house with a separate living and dining room with stained wooden baseboards and casings. We are moving out of the house for six months while the reno is being done. I want to get rid of the dark wood trim and have white baseboards and door casings but my husband isn’t on board (no pun intended) with that idea. We are going to open up the main floor so that it will no longer have a closed off formal dining and living area. I want a less traditional look that’s not so heavy and dark.

Do you have any photos (or words) that might help convince my husband it’s time for a change? Thank you. A: I admire you for renovating your current home rather than selling and moving to a new house. Instead of living with someone else’s redo that may not necessarily be to your tastes, you and your husband have the opportunity to renovate based on how you have lived in your home for the past 25 years. Take a look at the photo from which I’m drawing my inspiration for you. This Chicago home was designed by Michael Abrams (michaelabrams.com) and, for me, reflects the look I think you should explore. The main floor of this house is open and spacious while at the same time encompassing a floor plan that has a defined foyer, living room, dining room and kitchen. The decor is ele g ant, while being neither traditional nor modern; it’s a style referred to as transitional. The clean, straight

Scott Shigley Michael Abrams

This Michael Abrams-designed home has open sightlines but the spaces are defined. White trim keeps it looking light. lines of the furniture (with the exception of the antique secretary) and the neutral palette of the wall colour and fabrics create a space that is not too masculine or feminine, making it comfortable for all. I think this look would suit your renova-

tion nicely. And now to address the white elephant in the room: I agree with you, Christine, in regard to painting your wood casings and baseboards white. I think this photo perfectly demonstrates to you and your hus-

band how fresh your home would look if you were to lighten up and use white paint for the trim. I also love the addition of the white panelling in the entryway and then again in the dining room. It pays homage to the traditional bones of

the house without looking stuffy or heavy. You may choose to wallpaper above the panelling in either of these areas, just as Abrams has done. Use a neutral grasscloth paper for texture, as shown here, or a subtle tone-on-tone damask if you want a bit of pattern without being bold. Either will work nicely in your new space. Your renovated home will serve you for many years to come with what sounds like an extensive makeover, so I strongly recommend you and your husband think carefully about every last detail so you don’t miss anything or — heaven forbid — make a mistake. Take the time to collect magazine tearsheets or start a Pinterest board of every room and detail that remotely appeals to you so you can then narrow down the ideas to how you want your home to look. And remember, the process should be enjoyed as much as the end result. Best of luck. Send your design question to askjeffreyfisher@gmail.com.

Nation-building more than playing politics

Alan Thomarat

CEO and President Canadian Home Builders’ Association — Saskatchewan The Canadian Home Builders’ Association — Saskatchewan offers high marks for governments that commit to sustaining the economy and action plans to keep the country strong on the global scale. Attention to issues such as productivity, debt-to-GDP ratio and expanding markets for Canadian goods and services is, without a doubt, a direction for long-term nation building. These statements have been presented before and need to be reinforced from time to time. It is concerning for us, though, when politics and perceived public opinion drive government agendas more than practical public policy considerations. Everyone here is fully aware of the elephant in the room we know better as the greying demographics and the related labour market challenges resulting from a surging economy and looming retirements of millions of Canadians. There are many issues impacting employment levels in communities and, more often than not, there are few similarities from market to market. Employment Insurance is a valuable program in Canada and in times of declining employment in some regions the EI system can be a key tool that supports families. This support serves to mitigate the hardship of job losses and assists workers and families, and to appreciate that we are all Canadians and we are free to seek employment and quality of life from coast to coast to coast. This program can be used to encourage individuals to take advantage of opportunities in different parts of the country. The residential construction industry is committed to engaging communities in economic development to benefit individuals, communities, regions and industry in Saskatchewan. We are committed to professionalism and unrelenting in

our desire to ensure there is a place to call home for everyone, a job to build esteem that helps one have and keep that home, and opportunities for everyone to share the fruits of Canada and Saskatchewan. Everyone, whether an Irish immigrant, a family from East Asia, a Canadian looking for better opportunity in other parts of this vast country, should have the opportunity to participate in the economic benefits that Canada’s inherent wealth offers. It is important to develop policy that is based on sound consideration and to change policy carefully, maybe even incrementally, to correct loopholes and abuses. We don’t need to kill a fly with a sledge hammer, yet we often do if we act or react without considering the unintended consequences for different regions. We have witnessed this recently in the Bank of Canada’s changes to mortgage amortization term limits last summer and now the changes proposed for several immigration programs add to the labour market pressure felt in many communities in Western Canada. Indeed, we need to demand compliance and it is right to expect employers to respect the intentions of adaptive labour market opinions and the Temporary Foreign Worker Program. Some changes may indeed address abuses and loopholes, yet markets, regions and industries such as ours, which are truly experiencing labour shortages in skilled trades, will pay the price because a few employers didn’t comply with the rules. We need to continue to work across the many regions in Canada to understand differences in both housing and labour market needs to identify and address priorities within policy considerations. Canada is so much more than a single labour market or a single housing market. In fact, there are dozens of housing markets and labour markets in urban centres and regions all across Canada. Canada and public policy is not easy, it is complex and diverse and a one-size policy does not fit all regions. Alan Thomarat is the president and CEO of the Canadian Home Builders’ Association — Saskatchewan and the Saskatoon & Region Home Builders’ Association.

Tips for pest prevention Kelly Kent Postmedia News Just as we become more active as the weather warms up, so too do animals and creepy-crawlies emerging from their winter hiding places in search of food. Keep them from becoming a nuisance in and around your home with these tips from Angie’s List, (angieslist.com), a site dedicated to reviewing service providers. Trim trees and bushes: Cut back tree limbs and branches that hang over your roof, since ants, squirrels or other rodents may find these overhanging branches are convenient ways to enter your home. Clean up wood or debris: Piles of wood, leaves or other scraps near

your home look very inviting to pests. Seal windows and doors: Bugs can fit through the tiniest of holes, so repairing cracks or other openings in windows, doors, screens and siding can go a long way toward preventing a pest problem. Outdoor lights: Moths and other bugs are attracted to light and will gather around almost any source. Keep bugs from swarming your doorways by turning off outdoor lights when they aren’t needed. Or, switch to a coloured bulb, which is less attractive to insects than white bulbs. Secure containers: To keep rodents and other animals from turning your garbage can or green bin into an all-hours buffet, make sure its lid is sealed tightly or keep it in a closed garage or shed.

Opening up walls, windows and even patios is popular in renovations, particularly as baby boomers age. But these type of structural changes can involve quite a bit of work and requires a building permit.

Let in the light with a permit mIKE HOLMES Make it Right

Most people would agree that open space and natural light are good things to have in a home. They are also two of the top requests I hear when it comes to home renovations. But projects to bring both of these into your home can cause a lot of problems if they aren’t planned and done right. Knocking down interior walls and cutting into exterior walls to add more windows or make doors wider are not easy jobs. But they sure look easy on TV, don’t they? That’s part of the problem. People get these great ideas for their homes after watching a design show. They’re inspired, excited, and can’t wait to have it. Then they hire someone to do it. Before they know it, they have a demoed home, no money and no options. I’ve seen it happen a thousand times! Don’t fall into this trap. Learn what it takes to do it right. For example, you need a permit to move windows and doors, or to make them bigger. Not many people know it, but any time you change structure you need a permit. If you’re cutting new openings for windows and doors, guess what? You’re changing structure.

stacked one on top of the other, so both sides of the doors lined up with each other. That meant the door headers were supported by block. The homeowners were renovating the second floor and part of the renovation was moving the doors on the second floor. They hired a contractor who did it wrong. They moved the door not thinking about structure. Now only one of the point loads was supported by block; the other one was supported by the glass of the door below. Can you imagine all that weight held up by just glass? Talk about showing the cracks of poor construction. When you bring in someone who doesn’t know what they’re doing, all they do is contaminate your home and screw things up. Knocking down one wall the wrong way — not to mention the wrong wall — can open up a can of worms. The way the laws are set up, it would take years and boatloads of cash to go after poor contractors and tradespeople. Save yourself the time, trouble and money. Do your homework — even if it takes months — to make sure you hire the right pros. No exceptions, no excuses. Catch Mike Holmes in his new series Holmes Makes It Right on Tuesdays on HGTV. Moving, adding or changing windows and doors are becoming popular projects. For instance, now that baby boomers are getting older, doorways will need to get wider so wheelchairs can get through. And moving windows or making them wider increase natural light coming into your home. Plus, if the windows are of good quality, installed and insulated properly, it can also reduce your energy bill. But, like I said, these aren’t easy jobs. You can’t just move a door. You have to think about the structure — above and below it. Each side of a door carries a point load, which is weight that is focused at a specific point in a structure. So when you move a door, you move the point loads. It is crucial that both point loads are properly supported. To do that you need to bring in a pro who can look at what’s holding up either side of the door. They should be able to tell what needs to be done so that the door can be moved without compromising structure. What you want is for the weight to be properly transferred to the foundation. But if moving the door moves one of the point loads over an area that can’t support the weight of the point load, you’re in trouble. Recently, I was working on a house that was of brick and block construction. It had two sets of doors — one on the first floor and one on the second floor. They were

Plants, fruits add life to your home Flowering Plants

You can add beauty, fragrance and a sense of springtime to your home by decorating with lush plants and potted trees. Decorating with plants “kind of fell out of vogue” for a time, says California-based interior designer Molly Luetkemeyer. “It was such a ’70s thing, or I think people associated it with the ’70s,” but it’s become popular again in recent years. Today, “designer spaces pretty much always include some element of life,” says interior designer Brian Patrick Flynn, founder of decordemon.com. “While that can be anything from coral to tortoise shells, pressed leaves or even a tiny bowl with a goldfish, the most common way to add life is with potted plants and trees.” We’ve asked Flynn, Luetkemeyer and Betsy Burnham of Burnham Design in Los Angeles for advice on choosing the right plants, potting them perfectly and keeping them blooming.

“I love plants that flower in the spring,” says Luetkemeyer, who recommends daffodils, narcissus and hyacinth. She also loves gardenia plants for their heady fragrance and shiny leaves. “Any plant that’s a woody plant, with a wood that’s exposed, is going to be a little bit trickier,” she says. Consider researching gardenias online to learn how much water and how much light your plant will need.

Countertop Herbs “This might be a great time to put some herbs in your kitchen,” Luetkemeyer says. Many grocery stores and nurseries sell herb plants such as mint or basil that are already blooming in small plastic pots. You can re-pot them into more attractive containers, then cluster several together on a countertop.

flanking a fireplace or focal point without growing out and over it.”

Melissa Rayworth The Associated Press

“Talking to someone at a nursery is a really good idea,” says Burnham, because employees at garden stores and plant nurseries are usually glad to answer questions about choosing and caring for plants. You can choose plants based on the spot in your home where you’d like to keep them (sun-drenched windowsills, shady corners or in-between spaces that get a mix of sun and shade). Or you can select a plant you love and then ask for advice on where to place it. If you have pets or small children, ask whether a plant you’re considering is poisonous. And if you want plants that need very little attention, don’t be shy about saying so.

Brian Patrick Flynn, Sarah Dorio/The Associated Press

To add life to dark, well-shaded rooms, Brian Patrick Flynn is a fan of the fiddle leaf fig tree. such as the maidenhair. “They’re so delicate and soft,” says Luetkemeyer. “They’re fresh, and they’re that pale green that’s the beginning green of spring.” Maidenhairs are fairly easy to care for: “They need to be watered,” she says, “but if you water them, they hang around.” Consider grouping several together in small pots or buying just one large fern. “They can g round a space grouped together in odd numbers in pots of varied heights on the floor,” Flynn says. Or “you can use them to add life high up in a room with hanging basket planters. And then they also look excellent potted and placed on a pedestal, coffee

table or console table.”

Potted Trees “A statement tree,” says Burnham, “adds height to your room, and plays with the light at a window.” Her clients often opt for the colour and fragrance of small citrus trees in their homes or at the entrance to a patio or yard. “They require light and require water,” Burnham says, “but they have fabulous floral blooms in addition to the colour of the fruit. Flynn also suggests fig trees: “They’re super architectural and almost kind of minimalist. Since these grow straight upwards, they’re perfect for cor ners or

“What you plant something in makes just as much of a statement as the tree or plant itself,” says Burnham. Take time shopping for exactly what you want. “Add a little extra effort,” she says, “and you get a really chic little addition to your room.”

Non-Plant Greenery If you don’t wish to commit to even a low-maintenance plant, Flynn suggests you “work in fruits in decorative ways.” “Oranges, clementines, apples and limes ... look excellent grouped in vessels,” he says. “The key to getting it right is to separate them, and not have different types of fruit within the same grouping.” Whatever kind you choose, Flynn is sure you’ll be happier if you add some kind of greenery to your home.

clean sweep

Dyson miniaturizes ball technology after 1,859 tries as nearly 2,000 prototypes were developed by more than 100 engineers over a three-year period. The result is a 5.4-kilog ram ball vacuum with a self-adjusting head that maintains constant suction across various flooring types. The suggested retail price is $549.99 — which includes precise cleaning: Every angle of each airway is honed to ensure microscopic particles, as tiny as 0.5 microns or 1/5000th of a pin head, are spun out of the airflow and captured in the bin. No more standing over the spilled Cheerios, wondering which have been sucked up and which have escaped to live another day.

Postmedia News When it comes to vacuuming, Dyson has always been on the ball, but that ball has just become a whole lot smaller. The company’s new DC51 compact vacuum is designed to be as powerful as a full-sized model, but with miniaturized components. “Dyson engineers have concentrated our patented technology. The brief was to produce a small, efficient, powerful machine that performed like a full-sized one,” Dyson founder, industrial designer James Dyson, says in a press release. Little effort was spared in efforts to achieve this goal,

Dyson’s new DC51 compact vacuum is as powerful as a full-sized model.

HARBOUR LANDING HOMES Cindy Taylor/Pottery Barn

This Bon Appetit scene at a Parisian bistro storefront by Cindy Taylor is part of a new collection at Pottery Barn.

The Masters of decor Kim Cook The Associated Press There is an artistic vibe to decor this spring, touching everything from dinnerware to drapery, art photographs to textiles. Manufacturers are now able to reproduce artwork with impressive detail and precision. Originals that may have been painted or inked retain evidence of brush and pen. Computergenerated designs have greater depth of colour and pattern than in the past. And photo prints are even more striking. Zara Home has a bouquet of lovely throw pillows for spring with vintage prints or botanical ones reminiscent of paintings by the Masters. Mariposa features a flock of Edouard Travies-esque exotic butterflies on a white background; Lula evokes a Renoir still life; Spring has a sweet cottage floral; Lannion, Hawaiana and Hojas tropical motifs have a retro vibe. (www.zarahome.com ) A spring walk through the Chicago Botanic Garden inspired artist Matthew Lew to create an exuberant burst of white and tan blooms on a bright orange

background, rendered at CB2 on a hand-tufted rug. The retailer’s got another moder n rug featuring a graphic brush stroke of linen white on tonal carbon grey. And artist Katherine Finn-Gamino’s colourful multimedia geometric pillow is abstract art for the sofa. (Botanical rug, Swoosh rug, pillow, www.cb2.com ) Watercolour paintings of many popular dog breeds, including Labs, golden retrievers and little terriers, are available from Pottery Barn on linen throw pillows with personalized monograms. The needle arts are showcased here, as well, on linen lampshades stitched with tonal ikat or floral motifs, and a pillow depicting a vintage bird postcard in finely-detailed embroidery. Photographic art is an excellent way to bring a creative or unusual element to your room. Pottery Barn continues to expand its wallart series this spring with a coterie of photo artists who have made intriguing works at a price not easily matched in the market for great photography. California photographer Lupen Grainne creates imagery that combines a pensive Instagram quality

with professional composition. She captures dreamy San Francisco street scenes and beautiful fruit still lifes that draw you in. San Francisco-based Ana Ramirez’ shell photographs in stark black and white highlight the sculptural beauty of nature. And Prague-born photographer Michal Venera’s expressive black-and-white Tanzanian animal prints depict the textural grace and beauty of the natural world. You’ ll also find some amazing work from pro photogs Cindy Taylor and Rebecca Plotnick. (www.potterybarn.com ) At Crate and Bar rel, there’s the Monet-like watercolour floral of the Myrtle pillow, while the dramatic Landscape pillow, featuring a winding road through wild countryside, brings Turner to mind. (www.crateandbarrel.com) Bird’s eggs writ large — in fact, 32-inch-square (81-cm-square) large — are the powerful focal point of a series of wall art at Wisteria this spring. The eggs themselves are softly hued, but the scale of the photographic imagery is so remarkable that one or more would be a central feature in any room. (www.wisteria.com )
