Choose the right white Pro’s choices make it easy for you SAMANTHA PYNN POSTMEDIA NEWS Q: I’m painting our condo white again. I made a horrible choice three years ago. I painted test patches and thought I’d chosen well, but after I’d paid the painters the walls looked peach. I cried like a baby! I want the right white this time. Please suggest the perfect white. A: I find white can go two ways: flesh-toned or science lab. Neither shade’s a winner. I asked a few design friends to tell me their favourite whites. Here’s what they said. Anne Hepfer of Anne Hepfer Designs: “Pointing No. 2003 by Farrow & Ball is a warm clean white that beautifully complements white linen, and doesn’t yellow over time. I painted my living room walls this colour

10 years ago and it still looks fresh and inviting.” Brian Gluckstein, Brian Gluckstein Design: “I use Benjamin Moore Cloud White (CC-40) with neutral colours and Benjamin Moore Distant Gray (OC68) with cool colours. This warm white with a slightly yellow undertone looks crisp, inviting, and it creates a perfect backdrop to display art work.” Sarah Richardson, Sarah Richardson Design: “I’ve always been a fan of Natural White by Glidden/ ICI. Not too stark, not too yellow, just the right tone to complement all the fabulous colours you’ll dress your walls in!” As for me, for traditional spaces, I like Farrow & Ball’s off-white Slipper Satin No. 2004 (walls and trim) and Pointing (ceilings). For modern spaces, I’ve been using Oxford White because House and Home designer Joel Bray used it in his New York-style apartment and I liked it. Design trends for broad range of homeowners White — Cabinets, flooring, backsplashes, counters, fixtures and appliances are beginning to lighten up. Layering white on top of white is a new approach in many kitchens and bathrooms that is giving way to a fresh and light feeling. To achieve clean lines and a modern feel, designers and builders are selecting European cabinetry, adding shiny surfaces via appliances, backsplash and countertop choices, and even incorporating glass walls. Design Trend #2 — Bold Exterior Colours are making their way to the exterior of homes. Whether it’s through paint, a mix of cladding materials, doors, windows, porches, shutters, or trim, an extra layer of drama is being added to the design of elevations, further enhancing curb appeal. Design Trend #3 — Interior Courtyards are popular in all housing types right now, including in single-family homes, multi-family complexes, and within communities. The primary differences are scale. Gardens are popular with homeowners and often occupy community courtyards, while multi-family projects use interior courtyards to showcase private amenities such as pools and fire pits. Within single-family homes, courtyards provide private and safe outdoor living areas and are being shifted to side yards. Design Trend #4 — Out-of-the-

STU NIEBERGALL I just returned from the International Builders’ Show which covered over 600,000 square feet of trade show and featured over 100 speakers on every subject from community design, +50 housing to the latest technology in green building. One of my favourite sessions throughout the week was the Best in American Living Awards, which showcased the leading trends in home and community design. Design trends that make their appearance at these prestigious awards often become standard features, sought after by home builders and consumers in the years to come. The awards covered a broad range of housing built forms, including production and custom single-family homes, multi-family homes, and homes that were remodelled, as well as including community designs from across the country. What a showcase of some of the hottest trends in residential construction! Here are some of the trends to watch for: Design Trend #1 — White on

Box Amenities. Both single-family and multi-family communities and multi-family projects are being designed fully loaded, with over the top amenities that appeal to home buyers. Residents want to feel as though they are living in a four-star hotel, so builders and developers are offering features such as communal kitchens for cooking classes, pools with added wow factors such as a lazy river, a pool for dogs, and dog parks, electric car charging stations, spas, and a concierge service, just to name a few. Design Trend #5 — Specialty Lighting such as specialty pendants and fixtures are “lighting it up” this year. Regardless of whether it involves a custom or a stock fixture, designers are finding ways to showcase them as pieces of art rather than just a functional element. Lighting is being paired with wood ceiling details to further enhance the room’s design and create a feeling of warmth. Design Trend #6 — Historic Styling with Modern Flair. New or remodelled homes, be they Craftsman, Prairie, Mid-Century Modern, or another historic architectural style, are adding modern flair to their traditional designs through colour, finish, fixtures and lighting selection, while continuing to be influenced by the past through the use of reclaimed building materials and classic proportions and detailing.

Design Trend #7 — Blurring the Lines between Inside and Out. Lines continue to be blurred between the inside and outside of homes. No longer limited to areas with warmer climates, this is being seen all across the country. Both production and custom homes have movable glass walls, gourmet outdoor kitchens, and interior courtyard pools, adding more everyday living space. Design Trend #8 — Dual Master Baths. Dual master baths are all the rage. They are glamorous, yet extremely functional. Surprisingly, this can be achieved even in a smaller space. While remaining simple, functional and clean, dual baths often have a shared shower and continue to feature fixtures, colours and finishes with a spa-like feel. Rushing roulette with hurrying jobs No. 1: You hire the wrong contractors. Hiring the right person for the job takes time. You have to check references, track records and speak to past clients. Do everything you need to do to know who you are hiring, who you are trusting with something very valuable and who you are handing money over to. No. 2. You can turn good contractors into bad ones. I’ve seen it happen. People hire good contractors or sub trades, but something happens, the schedule changes and contractors are forced to make bad decisions just to get the job done by a certain date. I know what you’re thinking: A good contractor sticks to the schedule. But sometimes things happen that are out of contractors’ control: there might be a back order of a certain product and they can’t get in on time; or maybe the job exploded and now all of a sudden it’s a lot bigger than expected. Maybe they found mould or bad electrical and the entire house needs rewiring. You don’t want a contractor or sub trade to ignore problems and cut corners. Otherwise, you will pay for your job twice if it isn’t done right the first time. But if you are firmly set on a fin-

The 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi kicked off last week. Unfortunately, the competition wasn’t the only thing people were talking about. As soon as people started arriving, pictures of the building conditions and hotels created a social media frenzy. You’ve seen images: Toilets side by side, not separated by stalls; fire hoses for showers; unfinished hotel rooms and lobbies; half constructed venues — all signs of a rushed job. Now, I can’t tell you what went wrong — I’m not there. That’s like quoting a job only looking at pictures — you can’t do it, but if you do it’s probably wrong. What I can tell you is that many construction problems are avoidable, and the best way to avoid them is by slowing down and not rushing into or through a job. What kinds of problems do we run into when we rush?

When you do this the end result is a gamble — you don’t know what you’re going to get. And who pays for it in the end? You do. You might save on time but you won’t on money. Rushed jobs are always more expensive. No. 3. More — and pricey — problems. For example, some products and materials need time to cure or set, such as spray foam or concrete. Rushing a renovation or building project creates the perfect conditions for stupid mistakes to happen, such as not taking proper measurements, cutting corners on proper installation, or burying live wires in the walls. My best advice is make the quality of the job your top priority, not when it’s supposed to be done. Obviously, you want to make sure there is some kind of work schedule being maintained. While many projects can require a significant investment, designers say homeowners can achieve dramatic results without breaking the bank. “Window treatments are a big-ticket item now,” says Sheri Peterson, an interior design consultant in Victoria. “I find if you have the

budget and you really want to do the windows nicely, custom blinds and drapes are the way to go.” But she says homeowners can get a similar look on a smaller budget. Pre-made drapery panels can be purchased at many decor stores and with some basic alterations can be used to create dramatic looks. Natalie Fuglestveit, principal designer at Calgary’s Natalie Fuglestveit Interior Design, says single-panel drapes with hardware are quite affordable. “One option on how to save money is by selecting a fabric less than $20 per yard for side panels. Usually only six yards (5.5 metres) will be required,” says Fuglestveit. “The side panels will be

non-functioning, but this will still provide a powerful impact in a room and help finish it off. Homeowners can always purchase roller blinds to help provide privacy in the evenings or when away from their home.” According to Peterson another timeless window treatment is the use of sheers, particularly in patterns and colours. “Right now grey is our neutral, so a smoky grey sheer with a pattern would look really nice,” says Peterson. “The pleats on all drapes and sheers are very loose.” Like Peterson, Fuglestveit has seen trends in window treatments include fabric drapery with beautiful hardware, roller blinds for a clean, modern and sleek fin-

ish, or fabric Roman shades with trimming for a fun doit-yourself look. “I am currently loving doing floor-to-ceiling, sheer, ripple-fold and double-European-pleats drapery,” says Fuglestveit. “It is fun to play around with mixing hardware finishes and using a combination of fabrics.” Homeowners don’t have to worry about the timeconsuming chore of dusting metal venetian blinds anymore. “Some of the new blinds have anti-static paint on them so they don’t collect the dust as much,” says Peterson. “The polyester fabrics used on some blinds is so easy to vacuum or spot clean if they need it. Blinds are not nearly as tricky to clean.”

With the advent of tablets, phones and e-readers, could the book-lined home library go the way of the formal dining room? Not a chance, designers and retailers say. Digital and print books can coexist, says House Beautiful’s editor in chief Newell Turner. “When there’s an endless river of (digital) content, the words, text and images we choose to print and bind into a physical book will make (it) even more special,” she says. And books, in their variety of shapes and sizes, can be art in their own right, she says. Certainly, many people display richly illustrated coffee table books. And at Hearst’s October 2013 Designer Visions show house in New York, Jamie Drake took the books-asart notion literally. For his House Beautiful apartment, he turned large books spine sides in and stacked them geometrically in wall recesses to flank a fireplace as sculptural art. “Books are precious and beautiful, both their contents and materials. I was inspired to provoke thoughts, placing the bulk of the spines away from the viewer, thus highlighting the thousands of paper pages and creating a sense of desire to discover what lies within,” he says. For Elle Decor at the show house, Alessandra Branca created a warm, intimate library with just two bookshelves and a chrome easel for a flatscreen television. A large Candida Hofer photograph of Dublin’s Trinity College Library provided a trompe l’oeil effect, as if the library extended into the image. Branca imagined the space, which included walls covered in chocolatey faux bois (woodgrain appearance) sateen and a plump sofa blanketed in tartan, as a room where you could store favourite vintage books but also use a digital reader. “Nothing can replace the wonderful feel of sitting curled up with a book, or the happenstance of discovering a book on the shelf that you haven’t seen for a while, particularly books on art, architecture or design,” she says. “I think we’ll always love the physical aspect of a book in hand, but I’ve found I buy more and more of my new fiction online.” New York interior designer Elaine Griffin sees the role of home libraries changing. “We’ve come a long way from the English country
