Q: We are about to do a complete kitchen renovation, having lived in our current house for 30 years. My husband and I raised three children here and the kitchen looks it. We love our neighbourhood and instead of moving we’ve decided to improve on what we have. Now that it’s just the two of us we are going to redesign the kitchen to accommodate an island. My question to you regards sinks. I’ve been looking online and there seems to be an infinite amount of choices. Do you have any advice on narrowing my choices? A: You are so right about infinite sink choices. Continued from F1 You don’t mention if you intend on plumbing the island. If you are going to include a sink you might consider installing a small troughstyle or circular sink. Both of these styles are ideal when entertaining as it allows you to set the bar area up on your island while keeping your main sink free for food preparation and dirty dishes. With regard to your primary sink (whether you intend to put it in the island or not) there are two camps of sink people: those who prefer a divided sink and those who don’t. Typically, those who like divided sinks feel liberated with the ability to have dirty dishes on one side while still rinsing, straining and so on, on the other side. In my opinion, with all the sink accessories on the market today, that argument has weakened. There are cutting boards, colanders and dish-drain trays that sit over the sink that render the single sink as purposeful as a divided one, with the added benefit of being able to soak the lasagna pan at the end of the night. There are double sinks with a lower divide that enable you to fill both sinks with water, and submerge a large pan to soak across the divide. But will you actually ever do that? You may even choose a divided sink in the main counter and a large single sink in the island. That way you have the best of both options. Next, decide if you want an under-mount or top-mount sink. I’ve always preferred an under-mount both visually and practically, though admittedly, the Blanco Attika (blancocanada.com) sink, pictured here, with the raised ledge is pretty sexy. It may not be as practical for cleanup as an under-mount (or even a regular top-mount) sink, but it looks worthy of making the sacrifice.

Blanco Attika single sink with raised edges. Stainless steel has always been my go-to when specifying sinks, but take a look at granite composite as well. They’re popular with households with hard water because they don’t show spots or stains and resist scratches and chips. Cassandra Datt with Blanco Canada tells me she has a Silgranit (Blanco’s branded name for their granite composite sink) and would never have any other sink. Silgranit sinks are 80-per-cent granite composite,

20-per-cent acrylic, come in various colours and are made in Canada. I probably have confused you even more, by saying I love my under-mount rectangle stainless steel sink. But I would not recommend 90-degree corners, as I find cleanup tougher than if they were rounded. Challenging new rules govern windows, doors mIKE HOLMES Make it Right

As of Jan. 1, 2014, the new 2012 Building Code requirements came into effect for windows, doors and skylights — for new construction and any renovation that requires a permit. We had a three-month grace period to catch up, but that time is over. Now my question is: Are we prepared? We used to follow CSA A440 guidelines (Canadian Standards Association), but now we have this Harmonized Standard — specifically NAFS-08, which sets out the new standards for all windows, doors and skylight products sold in Canada, including products made in the U.S. The Building Code has “har monized” Canadian and U.S. standards and testing for windows, doors and skylight construction. And it’s doing this through the North American Fenestration Standard or NAFS, which covers most factorybuilt products. What are these new standards about? Making sure windows and doors are strong enough to stand up to the environment where they’re installed. In Canada, the new NAFS standards have to be used along with the Canadian Supplement (CSA A440S1-09). Why? Because not everything could be harmonized, such as material requirements, water penetration, and certain tests and testing, for instance, maximum water test pressures and air leakage testing requirements.

The new standards for windows and doors are about making sure they are strong enough to stand up to the environment where they’re installed. And that changes depending on location, even within the same city. The Canadian Supplement understands these differences, and uses that information to figure out the specific standards windows, doors or skylights going into those different Canadian environments must meet. For homeowners, the big change with the new standards are the labels going on new windows and doors — they’re more detailed, and might be too complicated. That means you will need a supplier and installer you trust who can explain why you might be paying more for windows and doors.

For manufacturers, the big change is the testing. Under the NAFS, a product’s performance is established through testing only, which means manufacturers will need to retest their product lines to the new test sizes and pressures. This raises a few issues. First, it will cost manufacturers a lot of money and time. It’s a huge investment, and it’s easier for bigger window and door manufacturers to bite the initial cost than it is for medium to smaller manufacturers. A n o t h e r i s s u e, s o m e manufactures might be NAFS certified, but only for single units — so no mulled

or combined units, which is what most bigger-sized windows are. (Those are windows that have a partition between two or more units of glass.) According to these new regulations, those mullion bars have to be tested and labelled, too. Also, testing isn’t always straightforward. Sometimes a certain product will be a one-off item — something custom, and it can’t be tested because of its size or shape — it might not fit into the testing chambers. And there aren’t performance ratings on the label anymore — now we have Performance Grade (PG). It combines a product’s struc-

tural resistance and water penetration resistance based on design pressure, which is determined by the architect, municipal building department and Canadian Supplement. There are a few challenges here. Architects will need to figure out how much testing they will accept from suppliers, and how long they’re willing to wait for it. It’s also going to be a challenge for builders and contractors. How will they bid on jobs if a window or door manufacturer doesn’t have the specific products they need — tested and

with the proper labels and performance requirements? They need to lear n what the new NAFS performance r e q u i r e m e n t s a r e, a n d what manufacturers are meeting them — the right way. It always comes down to education; not just for contractors, builders and suppliers, but for homeowners too.
