Along with business partner Bertrand Charest, Mailhot runs ThinkGlass, creating stunning pieces for national and international clients, from underlit countertops and bars in Ottawa to a soaring chocolate fountain for the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas. Staircases, floors, murals, furniture, almost nothing is off limits for this imaginative pair, who began in 1999 in the basement of a suburban Montreal home and are

The 57-year-old Mailhot describes glass as a “light magnet,” saying its relationship with light creates a key distinction among materials. A piece of glass on a sunny morning won’t reflect light the same way it does at sundown, he says. “Glass is living through light.”

To create his pieces, he uses a process called thermoforming, which involves fusing sheets of glass together with heat, then cutting, shaping and polishing. Each custom piece is handcrafted and often inspired by nature. It’s durable, nonporous and 100 per cent recyclable.

Every year people around the world shut off their lights for one hour, from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., all in the name of Earth Hour and saving our planet. This year Earth Hour is on March 29. I know I’ll be flicking off, and I’m counting on millions of Canadians to flick-off, too! With every passing year Earth Hour gets bigger — more organizations and countries participate, more people get involved and the stakes get higher. This is great because it means we’re taking bigger steps toward building a sustainable future. Earth Hour has become the largest mass participation event in history. What does that tell you? That people care about the planet, climate change and that they’re willing to do something about it. A lot of us want to build a sustainable future, and thankfully, it’s not just

people stepping up to the plate. Governments are, too. Proper programs are being developed that support homeowners as they try to make their homes more green and energy-efficient. For example, solar leasing is a good way to start weaning homes off non-renewable energy. Using solar energy to power your home is smart, but the initial investment is beyond what most households can afford — solar electric systems aren’t cheap. Upfront costs include solar panels, installation and any changes or upgrades that need to be made to the home so these systems can be properly (and safely) installed. Once everything is said and done, the total cost of adding a solar electric system to your home can be anywhere from $30,000 to $40,000. Instead of putting this money in yourself, out-ofpocket, a solar leasing program can cover the cost of the installation, operation and maintenance of the solar power system for you. This is done through companies or organizations, like PURE Energies, that work with local governments to make it financially easier for homeowners to install solar energy systems on their home.

Programs such as solar leasing and financing for energy-efficient home renovations and retrofits support homeowners interested in making their homes more sustainable. The way that most solar leasing programs work is that the energy generated by the solar panels on a home feed into the electric grid, and the homeowner gets a credit for that energy. So any time the household uses electricity, they don’t pay for the amount of energy that their panels have already contributed to the power grid. The great thing about solar leasing is the security. Homeowners never have to worry about not having enough electricity or power. Solar panels can’t generate electricity when it’s cloudy or at night. But with solar leasing, households

pull energy from the power grid while feeding it with solar power. Solar leasing also saves homeowners the trouble of maintaining or repairing the system — solar experts check and monitor the system for them. Plus some companies, like PURE Energies will also monitor other systems in the home that affect energy efficiency. For example, they will check a home’s HVAC system to make sure it’s working efficiently, given the weather conditions and temperature. Another great initiative is financing for energy-efficient

home renovations or retrofits. This helps homeowners replace bad windows, add more insulation or replace an old inefficient furnace. Toronto recently launched a new pilot project called the Home Energy Loan Program (HELP), which means 1,000 homes will be retrofitted over the next three years to help make them more energy and water efficient. Homeowners will still need to pay the money back on the loan — in instalments on their tax bill — but they will be saving money monthly, thanks to lower energy bills, and helping reduce their carbon footprint.

They get homeowners to start thinking about the long-term — the stuff that will make their homes last longer, save energy, save water, save money, and ultimately, save the planet. They put the focus back on making homes better — not just better-looking, which often just creates more waste. It motivates people to care about things like a subfloor system that will keep their basement warm and dry, rather than just worry about the flooring that goes on top; or the best kind of insulation instead of getting the cheapest. These programs change peoples’ thinking, which changes the future. I hear a lot of moaning and groaning about the costs of green initiatives but that’s short-term thinking. Building and renovating right is not just about today — it’s about tomorrow and the things you’re willing to do to make it right. There are a number of golf courses well within reach of the project, including Kaanapali Golf Courses and Kapalua Golf Resort. Gombik calls both courses world-class. Coming from landlocked Calgary, surfing didn’t come naturally for Gombik. But he found skills from a popular Canadian sport transferable when he hit the waves off Maui. “Surfing is somewhat similar to snowboarding and, of course, when you live in Calgary, you’re close to the mountains. So it’s just a great sport that gives you a lot of exercise and it’s a heck of a lot of fun,” he adds. Other favourite pastimes for visitors to Maui include zip-lining, fishing and sailing tours, dinner cruises, local festivals and soaking up the area’s rich cultural arts and theatre scenes. “The snorkelling is some of the best I’ve seen, right in front of the resort,” says Erika Alm of Powerplay Desti-

Beyond the weather, water and golf courses that originally brought an Alberta couple to Maui, they say there’s a quality that sets the big island apart from other sun-soaked getaways. Les Gombik and Cathy Choo of Calgary have a second home at Honua Kai Resort and Spa in Kaanapali, Maui. This project consists of 628 luxury units across two U-shaped buildings on an oceanfront location. It’s on a 15-hectare stretch of land along Ka’anapali Beach, which is about a fiveminute drive from Kapalua commuter airport and 50 minutes away from Maui’s main airport. “My wife calls it the ‘Aloha spirit,’ ” says Gombik. “I would say when you come to Maui, everybody is happy. It’s not just the locals, it’s not just the tourists. Wherever you go, people are just much more laid-back and friendly and happy because they’re either on vacation or on their honeymoons. They’re just much more relaxed.” That suits Gombik and Choo just fine. He’s a corporate recruiter and she’s a pipeline corrosion specialist. Gombik makes it out to Maui three or four times a year, while Choo’s work schedule lets her get away more often. “I have been visiting Hawaii for probably the last 15 to 20 years. It’s just a beautiful place,” says Gombik. While the couple embraces the opportunity to unwind at their second home, staying still for too long isn’t their style. They both golf and surf. “There is a lot of surfing and golfing, but there’s also a lot of going for hikes (and) snorkelling and going on the catamaran tours,” says Gombik. “It’s just an outdoor paradise.”
