what is WHAT IS COLOR? COLO color Color is a perceived subjectively according to an individual’s region and ethnicity. The “blue” that one designer speaks of many be a different blue from the one imagined by a manufacturer on the other side of the world. The situation calls for a lingua franca of color, an objective standard for identifying specific colors.

When a group of people look at a single color, are they really seeing the same thing?

olive · spruce · almond · mauve wood

Intuitively speaking, it doesn’t´t seem likely. The color red can become countless different rods depending on how it is described and styled. Take the works of the impressionists. Rejecting solid colors, these artists sought instead to capture color’s fluidity, it’s constant shifts with respect to angle, temperature and time. They applied unending layers of paint on their canvases to express colors that would not be rendered by one shade alone. In a similar way, PANTONE took the color we call red and mapped it onto a spectrum, defining a panoply of reds in the process. It developed a language for standardizing color. With an understanding of the Pantone System, or with Pantone color chips, a group of people looking at a single color can identify it as one and the same. Any color around us can be identified as such.

How might this change how we approach color?
