THE ARCOS

INDEPENDENCE PALACE LISBON | PORTUGAL Within Lisbon the Independence Palace holds an historical importance for the city. The design project asked for students to develop the Southern and Eastern facades to whatever they thought was necessary for the envelope of the building. The choice between going for a more modern look, opposed to continuing on with an historical look halted the progress on this project until the choice was made to incorporate them both into the actual design. The ground floor of the building was kept the same in regards to the facades. I wanted to make sure to keep a relationship to the previous building in some way and decided that this would be the best move to do it. In contrast the upper floors were given a more modern feel to push the building into a new direction.

1 The previous building imprint was used to develop the massing for the new building.

Arcades added to develop a pathway for circulation for the design.

2 Emphasize was placed on keeping the plaza from the previous building present within the new design.

6 Curtain wall system used for upper floors to create a constrast between new and old.

3 The corner of the design was given a difference in height to place more emphasis on that location.

7 Screen placed on Southern and Eastern facades for shading purposes.

4 Ground floor facades of the previous building were used to develop new facades (Arched windows).

8 Fractal parametric approach used for the screen to give the design a more modern statement.

PAS DE DEUX

MIXED USE MIAMI | FLORIDA The objective called for the opportunity for students to pick their own sites as long as it met within the requirements given. Furthermore the idea had to include an atrium to assist with controlling the amount of natural light that enters the building. A different approach was asked to be taken into consideration for the design process, students were asked to begin designing through the use of models rather than working by means of design software. The site of choice was the design district of Maimi which is known for its sleek modern architecture, upscale interior design stores and art galleries. The overall idea followed the same direction as the design district, which is a modern approach to architecture.

The proposed square site was divided into two masses to act as a building imprint.

2 The idea of an atrium was introduced as a floating mass between the two main bodies

3 A shift in hierarchy was made to give each mass its own identity within the design.

4 The atrium and southern facades were equipped with shading devices to control the amount of light

ATRIUM Acts as a device that controls light. Houses the bridges which connects the two masses.

BRIDGES Used to connect both masses to better utilize circulation in regards to fire escape options.

VERTICAL CIRCULATION Fire escape stairs placed from the center of the building to allow for better accessible escape routes while elevators are located at noticeable locations.

SOUTHERN FACADES Planer elements introduced to provide shading for the southern facades of the building.

TRANS-AM STATION

RAILROAD AVENUE TA L L A H A S E E | F LO R I D A For the 2018 ACSA Steel Competition students were asked to design a train station that would correlate to the open category of the competition. The design requirements of the competition was to utilize the material steel within the overall design, showcasing any characteristics of the material that the student deemed important. The site for the development was the Tallahassee train station located on Railroad Avenue near the Gaines street District of Tallahassee. Besides the train station, the design was to include a retail center that would increase the pedestrian use of the area, a hotel that would benefit the retail center and train station and lastly a connection between railroad square and the indicated site by means of a bridge or pathway.

OVERALL FINAL SITE SCHEME

TUNNEL - SCHEME 2

1 Firstly pedestrian spaces had to be determined for the overall site

3 The roof of the train station and retail district conformed to the overall structural columns that supported it.

2 Buildings were kept close to the eastern boundary of the site and pedestrian plazas were created at the center.

4 Green spaces were placed around the site to incorporate the idea of nature within the final design.

STEEL

DESIGN

STRUCTURAL COLUMNS

The Basis behind the final result for the project in regards to Strcture. The idea of a T became the frame of what would hold the entire building together.

01

Steel Y Columns At first straight forward steel columns were considered for use but the idea shifted towards a variation of Y columns. The reason for this was because the train station and retail sectors needed some sort of element that would set itself apart from its surroundings.

A more dyanmic design was desired. The T began to shape itself more towards incorporating a butterfly roof into the final design.

02

Steel Ribbons Train tracks play an important role in the overall process of a train getting to and from its destination. The idea of taking the tracks and placing them onto the southern facade of the train station was one of the overall ideas for the use of steel in regards to the design.

Ceiling heights were the next consideration with designing the structural columns of the building. A difference in heights became the final choice.

03

Realistic heights were then applied to the overall shape which brought it to human scale.

SOUTHERN FACADE - STEEL RIBBONS

Train tracks placed on southern facade of building.

Random tracks where selected and removed to break the continuous look.

A select few are picked and bent to create portals (openings) from the interior of the train station to the platform within the tunnel. Tracks cut to conform to the shape the tunnel.
