This long documentary will tell the story of a person undertaking the Camino de Santiago from Almeria with bare feet, 1.420 km long and 80-day trip. A struggle against the elements and against themselves, a way of overcoming that will culminate with the arrival of the Plaza del Obradoiro. “It is said that mother is only one. One day I was said I would lose mine. I can not describe the helplessness I felt. Then I made a promise. If it healed I would be able to walk thousands of miles barefoot, pushing the boundaries of endurance and pain. From Almeria to Santiago de Compostela is 2,000,000 steps. My mother was cured and now I have a long road ahead.

DIRECTOR’S NOTES 2.000.000 steps. Story of a promise. It is not just a documentary about someone walking in one direction, but a walk on the other side of our geography, through ravines and roads real trees. The visit to the villages and its people is a constant that provides another view of the Spanish territory far from the conventional tourist. The enormous natural wealth and historical heritage will be our geographical references. Making such a long way, on foot and in harsh conditions provides an extra incentive to the viewer (as occurs in other formats such as “The Last Survivor”) empathize with the protagonist’s personal circumstances. The increasing proliferation of new media formats that increasingly attempt to bring the viewer is one of the foundations on which rests this documentary. Web 2.0 is a cornerstone of any project today and it does not stay on the sidelines as the outreach and follow-through this medium will be basic before, during and after execution.

Story Of A Promise By Antonio Salvador Asensio Ruiz

2.000.000 steps. Story of a promise

“The love for my mother and the helplessness of feeling that I could lose her because of a horrible disease, I promised to walk thousands of miles beyond the limits of endurance and pain if she healed.” This is my story. First, I am going to explain something in order you to know me and my im mediate environment. My name is Antonio and I was born in Almeria, I am the son of José Asensio who, unfortunately for my brothers, my mother and myself, died in 1999. His death left a huge void in the family and Maria del Carmen Ruiz, my wonderful mother who I will tell you later, and who is the real engine of this story that I am going to live. I currently live in Aguadulce, a coastal village that belongs to Roquetas de Mar, Almeria, in an apartment for which I will be committed during my life. I live with my girlfriend since 5 years ago. Her name is Natalia and I think she is a heart with legs, with good feelings, the woman I love. Although we sometimes have some small problems like all couples, I could not have had better luck than to have her as partner. Well, as I said, I feel like a normal person... well, I am a rather large size, but a common person, at least I think so. I have always liked sports, cycling, swimming, but I opted for basketball that I played at a certain level. I also love walking, probably due to my time as a goat herder in our farmhouse in Pechina when I was a child and I heard, by chance, about the Camino de Santiago. My story starts in late 2003. I knew that my mother was going to be operated of a stomach reduction in June 2004 and in May of that year I decided to make my first pilgrimage to the north of Spain. I prayed for my mother to come out the operation and improve her quality of life, because she had entered a sort of lethargy, since the death of my father. Then, I decided to start from Puente la Reina to Santiago de Compostela by the “French Way”. It was the first promise I made for my mother... And this promise, made me discover the Camino de Santiago.

19

2.000.000 steps. Story of a promise

I guess I should say something. People like me who have done the Camino and who know what I mean: the Way is hard, suffering, not a vacation, but maybe this shared suffering is what makes such strong ties between the pilgrims are created. That is why it is said that the Way “hooks” (honestly, I think the Way will be linked to me all my life). Well, after that first pilgrimage, I have made many more, I think I have run about 5.000 km in total (always in northern Spain and southern France). Well, before speaking of the Way and tell you the journey that awaits me in the very near fu ture, I want to tell you about my family, I mean my mother and my brothers. I have a large family, somewhat complicated and totally wonderful. My brother David is a guy that looks serious, but fun and he loves all us a lot but never says it, but I know that it is. Then there’s my brother Alejandro. He would die for his family and his friends although he seems too independent. He is a great guy and if you really need to always be there. My brother Pepe is a “child” (25), he is loving and good person until he says “stop”, but when we lost our father, he was 12 and I think that it marked him forever as he feels a bit lost in the world; but he is slowly finding his way, he is a fighter. My sister Carmen is a very strong, hardworking, feisty woman. She loves us all very much, although I must say that because of her way of being, (a tough woman), our personalities are not much compatible. We adore and we fight each other in equal measure. And finally, but for me the most special (I must say) in my family is my mother. I mean, my mother started working about 10 years because my grandmother ask her. She worked and li ved in a well-known doctor’s house. She was engaged in cleaning, ironing, washing and lived with them there because my mother’s family was very poor. Actually, my grandmother, rest in peace, told me that my mother was fed as a baby... with chewed Bacon! My mother grew up with nothing. She had to work since childhood and has always lived very humbly. My mother’s experiences always moved my heart and I have always felt a special tenderness and a sense of protection towards her that it is difficult to explain with words, especially since my father died. My father was the only man in my mother’s life. Their love story began when my father was 35 and my mother 18, but never married because for one reason or another did not find the moment. In fact, I have been present in some time that date was set, but always 20

2.000.000 steps. Story of a promise

something happened that made them alter their plans. My father was a man of the world, a strongman, big (my physique is part of their genetic inheritance), an entrepreneur and a real hustler. For me it was like Superman, so when he died I had great difficulty accepting it, but I had to take care of my mother and I did not give option to sink. The truth is that when my father died I enjoyed a good economic situation and that made me much easier to care for my mother. Unfortunately, this situation has not followed through the years. Well, from this moment I have always tried to help my mother in everything I could, before too, but now much more, but not just myself, but my brothers. The fact is that we were, more or less, holding the life circumstances, and of course, time passed, we grew older, we were leaving home... life went up unstoppable.

After around 9 years since the death of my father, our family life does not seem like it was before. My mother lived alone and without a pension, as they had been denied for not being married to my father, although they had 5 children together. In 2009 I experienced an event that led to the story that I want to tell. This is short but explicit. Begin at the beginning. In early January 2009 my mother had a pretty bad time with severe pain in the bones and it had us all extremely worried. She went to a specialist doctor and they made her some medical test. The test results stated categorically in his diagnosis that what my mother suffered was an advanced metastases due to terminal cancer spread throughout their bone mass. 21

2.000.000 steps. Story of a promise

The radiologist stated and no doubt his diagnosis was correct 100% (this happened because we insist endlessly that possibility that it would otherwise because we do not want to believe that our mother were to die). Seeing this and thanks to my Aunt Modesta, my mother’s sister and the person who care for her (it is something to be always grateful), we begin to apply for any kind of test in order to locate the tumour which had caused the bone metastases. We spent two months for that. I was desperate and made a promise. I promised that if a miracle happened, if my mother came out of it, if it happened by divine intervention, I would do so mething very special, so I promised to walk barefoot from Almeria to Santiago de Compostela and I would no mind what it might mean for me. Well, in mid-March, a Saturday morning, my mother had a paralysis throughout the body and could not move or speak practically. An ambulance took her to the hospital Torrecárdenas and she was tested. Calcium levels were below minimum. First, the tumour could not be located anywhere, and now this. My brother David, who was the only one who could make a major cash outlay at the time, phoned to make an urgent private test at Granada because public health system took about six months and waiting for us was unbearable. She had to take a P.E.T. TAC or so, proves that if there is a tumour, leads to clearly see its exact location. So she was moved by ambulance from the hospital Torrecárdenas to Granada to take this test. A week later we had the results (advantages of private medical care). The tumour does not exist! For me it was an incredible news. He had a severe decalcification due to the reduction of her stomach. Her body did not absorb enough calcium and was in a critical situation due to this, but it was not cancer... It was indescribable the feeling that someone up there heard me and accepted my promise. For me it was a miracle. It is likely that it was a blunder of the radiologist, but I had returned to my mother and I was in debt. So I only had one thing to do: paying my debt, because someone up there fulfilled what I asked. My mother is now quite recovered from the bones and with their treatment can make an almost normal life. I have enough experience, as I have done several pilgrimages on foot, and I know I can. Now I should begin to prepare me to pay my debt. 22

2.000.000 steps. Story of a promise

This trip is sure to become an experience for me, immense gratitude and joy, great sacrifice, a huge improvement and enrichment inside, sure, mark me for life. I should pay my debt and overcome my limits to do so I can not afford to fail in this, as everyone, impossible journey.

ANNEX I - CROWDFUNDING http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crowd_funding Mass Financing (English crowd funding), also called collective financing collective microfinance, and micromecenazgo is the collective cooperation, carried out by persons performing a network to get money or other resources, the Internet is often used to finance efforts and initiatives of other persons or organizations. Crowdfunding can be used for many purposes, from artists seeking support from his followers, political campaigning, funding of the birth of companies or small businesses. Some opinions say that crowdfunding not include investments, and only includes donations, and that they have no financial reward. There are other opinions that say crowdfunding be limited to the sharing of resources to initiate projects. Most finance platforms contain a safety mechanism, because if the project's economic goal is not reached within the required donations are not charged to investors, this system was baptized by Kickstarter such as Pledge. However, other Micropatronage used as a system in which the public directly supports the work of others, making donations via internet. The term was popularized by blogger Jason Kotke, when he gave up his day job as web designer and began to live on their blogs that are funded through donations from its readers. Crowdfunding concept is based on sharing the funding of a project among all those who wish to support. That is, left to a collective work usually performed by a person or entity. An example of this system is the producer Riot Cinema, author among other works of the film The Cosmonaut, its corporate motto is to bring the film to all places, why opt for Creative Commons licenses that allow sharing of their productions. In this case, the crowdfunding allows anyone to become a micro-film producer and appear as such in the credits of the film. It is a way to fund projects that allow the network, regardless of major industries.
