Reflecting on SigEp Experiences Brother Jay Dostal reflects on his time as an undergraduate and how the SigEp cardinal principals remain an integral part of his life today. Being out of college for the last 10 years has really allowed me to reflect on what a profound impact Sigma Phi Epsilon has had on my life. Not a day goes by that the cardinal principles of virtue, diligence, and brotherly love shape the way that I live my life. I am extremely grateful to be a part of an organization that is committed to the development of young men so that they grow to be positive and productive citizens. When I think back on my experiences at UNK and SigEp, there are some very vivid memories that will stick with me forever. I remember pledging the fraternity in 1996 when there were only 15 active members. Over the next four years, that number grew to 75 due to the implementation of the Balanced Man program. I remember spending Homecoming week at Doc Meyers building the homecoming float and working together with my brothers to build something out of nothing. I will never forget my football games at Foster Field and seeing my brothers in their SigEp gear being the loudest group in the end zone. This also includes the group of guys that went out to Golden, Colorado for the Colorado School of Mines game and had to be asked by the PA announcer to leave the Oredigger goat mascot alone. I will also never forget working with Brother Steve Ell on the 1st Annual Augie Nelson Classic to get it off the ground. It is such an honor to see the tournament still flourishing today. There are so many memories that filled up a short amount of time and all of them involve working with my brothers in one way or another. This camaraderie and fellowship taught me how to effectively work with all different types of people and has carried over to my professional life. On a daily basis, I encounter numerous issues and face many decisions that I tackle head on with the values that I learned growing up in our great Fraternity. As the years have passed, my fondness of SigEp continues and that is why I continue to be involved. I have made it a goal of mine to get others involved in some capacity and I urge those who are considering volunteering to do so. I know that when I was an undergraduate, I always questioned whether or not alumni really were interested in what was going on in the house. Now that I am an alumni, I want that question to be answered in the affirmative. I sincerely thank all of you that have had an impact on my life. I never had a brother of my own, but I am proud to say that I belong to a brotherhood committed to the values and ideals of Sigma Phi Epsilon. HFF Jay Dostal Sigma Phi Epsilon ’01

SigEp Alumni Now On Facebook Recently, the Nebraska Gamma Chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon created an alumni group on the popular social networking site Facebook. With millions of members worldwide, Nebraska Gamma has been able to branch out to alumni brothers who have not been in the communication loop. The group already has 128 members and more are signing on. If you aren’t familiar with Facebook, it is a great way to get in touch with friends from the past and to catch up on what they are doing now. The NE-Gamma Alumni Group is open to all and can be accessed after a Facebook account has been set up.

Augie Nelson Classic

Annual golf tournament in Kearney a huge success in its eleventh year. On April 18th, the UNK SigEp chapter put on the 11th Annual Augie Nelson classic. The tournament was a huge success and all participants had a great time. Once again, the tournament was completely full and a huge donation was made to the Nebraska Kidney Foundation. Following the tournament, there was an alumni get-together at Fanatics in downtown Kearney. Alumni gathered for drinks, food, and fellowship and voted on a new alumni board for the undergraduate chapter. The golf tournament proved, once again, that it is an excellent way for brothers to gather on an annual basis to reflect on their time as members of Sigma Phi Epsilon.

Undergraduate Spotlight A new feature that highlights undergraduate and their career pursuits.

Burke Wilson Well hello there. My name is Burke Wilson and I am currently a junior at UNK studying Biology and Pre-Pharmacy with a health emphasis. This past summer and fall, I served as the Vice President of Recruitment and recruited upwards of 30 some members. Those members have turned out to be an outstanding group of young men, and I am proud to call them my brothers. This year has been a blast, but I am sad to call it my last. I have recently been accepted to Creighton’s Pharmacy program for the fall of 2009. I have received early alumni status from the chapter, and am proud to be an alumnus from a chapter that has accomplished so much this past year and is definitely the top chapter on campus. I plan to move to Omaha with my fiancÊe Kendra Francke where we will get married in the summer of 2010. It has been a great ride and I hope to continue to contribute to the betterment of my brothers and my Alma mater in the future.
