Reflecting on SigEp Experiences Brother Brent Wieck reflects on his time as an undergraduate at UNK and as a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Brothers, I can not believe that it has been already been 12 years since my days as an active SigEp. I still remember, like it was yesterday, showing up at the SigEp house with my cousin, Jay Jakob, and a friend, Rob Morrow, to see if we could become members. At the time the only thing I knew about fraternities I learned from watching the movie Animal House. To be quite honest, our first semester was a pretty big party, but like every guy starting out at college you quickly realize you have to study also or you won’t be there very long (or too long). I’ve had some great memories, met some great friends, and went from being a naïve kid out of high school to a young man ready to make my contribution to society because of my SigEp experiences. I could write many pages on those experiences but have to keep it to a page, so I’ll just touch on how they now apply to my life. Today, I reside in Omaha, Nebraska with my wife Paula, and our 1 ½ year old daughter Lauren. My daughter keeps me pretty busy. I’m sure all of you who have little ones know how active they can be at that age. I’ve been in the financial industry for ten years now, and have been a financial advisor for about two years. How do the three cardinal principals of virtue, diligence, and brotherly love pertain to my life today? I deal with them on a daily basis professionally. In this field, I work with individuals to help them reach their financial goals, or protect their financial well being, through investments and insurance so all three of those principles are very important. Virtue is very important, as it should be if you are dealing with an individuals financial well being. As for diligence, when you’re building a practice, you have quite a few ups and down, especially early on, and during times like we are experiencing with the recent economic state. Brotherly love has actually played a bigger role professionally for me than what you probably think it would in this industry. I was recently involved in the delivering of a life insurance (death benefit) check to a widow of a man that unexpectedly died. They had two young kids. I may not have been the one who comforted her and her kids with a hug like her extended family was, but I was there for her financially. Because of that check she could grieve without having to worry about where they were going to live or how the kids were going to afford college when they get older. Their lives will be forever changed, but it hit me really hard how much more difficult their lives would have been without the proper insurance coverage. In my personal life, being married and having a kid have really shifted my focus, and the principles I learned as a SigEp to me are as important as ever. The principles are very evident at home as my wife and I are just in the beginning stages of teaching, protecting, and giving our daughter the love and support she’ll need as she gets older and has new experiences in life. To this day I still regularly keep in touch with a number of my SigEp Brothers. The positive impact those values had on my life and how much I enjoyed the time I had during those years created some lasting relationships I feel fortunate to have. I hope life is treating everyone well. Feel free to email me, brentwieck@msn.com. HFF, Brent Wieck

Sigma Phi Epsilon Educational Foundation Website is Off and Running Recently, the National Headquarters of Sigma Phi Epsilon has established the Educational Foundation website to allow alumni and undergraduate members to network with brothers both in their home chapter and nationally. Nebraska Gamma is off and running and has established its homepage. In the event that the current alumni website goes down due to the webmaster moving or changing internet providers, the Educational Foundation site will still be running and can be moved easily to another brother to maintain it. The site is very useful in that it contains many of the same features that modern social networking sites like MySpace and Facebook have. The Educational Foundation site will allow registered users to blog, post pictures, display resumes, and keep up to date with what other alumni are doing. It is important for all alumni and undergraduate members to sign up today, so that communication can continue to thrive. Initial participation in signing up is very promising. A number of members of the Nebraska Gamma chapter have signed up, but there is a lot of work to be done. A simple search on the site under the link Site Members Only lists over 800 brothers from the UNK/Kearney State Chapter. Please take a look at the list and if you know the email address of that person, invite them to join. The goal is to get as many brothers involved. Currently we are at about 100 registered alumni/ undergraduate members, but we need to get in touch with more. Register today at http:// www.sigepfoundation.org/. Once you have done this, an email will be sent to you so that you can join the network of Nebraska Gamma brothers.

Invest in SigEp at UNK Educational Foundation allows alumni to donate to their specific undergraduate chapters By joining the other Brothers of the Nebraska Gamma chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon in registering on the Educational Foundation website, you can contribute directly to the UNK undergraduate chapter. Periodically, the Fraternity needs items that will help them exercise fraternal business. This might include scholarships, computers, and a number of other items. In order to help them, you can make a difference today. Register on the Educational Foundation website and select the link Support SigEp Now. From there, choose the option Giving to your Chapter and fill in the required information. The goal is to initially have every registered member donate $25 to the undergraduate chapter. That donation would currently raise $2,500 for the undergraduate chapter. Please consider making a donation to the chapter today and reaffirm your belief that the Fraternity truly does have an impact on the lives of young men.

Undergraduate News At this time, the undergraduate chapter is holding rush parties and signing up new members for 08-09 school year. They are also working on a new website that is more user friendly and will allow them to keep a better database of alumni. The website should be up and running in the fall, so check back soon. As soon as the URL is available, it will be linked to the alumni website.
