Life Story MELAE AUTUMN EDMONDS

Melae Autumn lovingly called “Mooda” was born February 13, 2016. Trademarked by her big brown eyes, perfectly sculpted eyebrows, and never ending lashes, she was doted on by everyone who encountered her as a real doll baby. However, Melae was quite the diva known for her infamous side eye and other faces that never hid how she felt. She was very particular about who she wanted to hold her and spend her time with. Two of her favorite people were her Mom-Mom and her Daddy! As a certified Daddy’s Girl, Melae was called “Chipmunk” by Shawn and Shawn alone! Her love for worship music started while she was still in the womb, and became a staple in her daily routine as well as story time with some of her cousins. Her favorite artist was Travis Greene who paid her a special birthday visit in 2019. As the first born, Melae would be how the family came to know about Leigh Syndrome and would set the tone on how they battled through the disease.

Early on, Melae could often be found with a smile on her face and her hands raised. Her parents knew then that this would be no ordinary battle. She was the epitome of strength in such a tiny frame fighting through some of her worst times with grace. ZECHARIAH AMIR EDMONDS Zechariah Amir, “Deuce” born on July 23, 2017, came into the world in the most dramatic fashion. Melicia would often say that his exaggerated reaction to things deemed him worthy of an Oscar! Zechariah was strong and stubborn, he refused to let what was happening around him change who he was. Full of personality, Zechariah could lighten your mood with his amazing smile and break your heart with his pouty lip. Zechariah was handsome, charming, and silly like his Daddy, he always had a way of getting what he wanted! A true cuddle bear indeed, Zechariah loved snuggling with his Mommy and had a fit whenever he wasn’t being held. This continued even after being admitted to The Children’s Hospital Of Philadelphia and the nurses obliged! In addition to Leigh Sydrome, Zechariah also battled with a form of Sickle Cell Disease, making his battle just a little more challenging than his Sister’s. He was strong

and brave throughout his entire journey as he was determined to fight things on his own terms until the very end. THEIR JOURNEY TOGETHER The Edmonds babies spent most of their journey at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. After being placed in the same hospital room, Melae and Zechariah developed an impenetrable bond so tight that even their heart rates would often sync up. At times it would seem like in their own way of communicating, they enjoyed taking turns keeping Mommy and Daddy on their toes! On the day of January 2, 2020, the Edmonds babies peacefully transitioned from the hands of their parents into the arms of Jesus. Our prayers for healing were answered. They leave behind to continue the fight their parents Shawn and Melicia Edmonds, G-Mom Sharon Jenkins, Uncle Tyree Edmonds and Tyrone Finney, Aunts Mercedes and Erica. Special Great Aunts Valerie Finney, Dana Coleman, Niesha Finney, Tamika Jenkins. And a host of cousins who loved them dearly and many others who loved them and followed their journey. They join at rest their Gam, Felicia and two great grandmothers, Geraldine and Marcellaine. By the grace of God, Melae and Zechariah will always be remembered for their smiles, strength, courage and teaching us that we don’t do defeat. #WeDontDoDefeat.

Poem by Mommy My daughter made me feel like a super hero. Her birth unlocked something inside of me that I never knew I had. Presented with a special assignment as her mother, I instantly became better than I was before. She deserved it! Her smile encouraged me Her strength propelled me The grace of God kept me all the while preparing me for the battle ahead

Heaven's Very Special Child by Edna Massimilla A meeting was held quite far from Earth It was time again for another birth. Said the Angels to the Lord above -These special children will need much love. Their progress may be very slow Their accomplishments may not show. And they’ll require extra care From the folks they meet down there. They may not run or laugh or play

Their thoughts may seem quite far away So many times they will be labeled different, helpless and disabled. So, let’s be careful where their sent. We want their life to be content. Please, Lord, find the parents who Will do a special job for you. They will not realize right away The leading role they are asked to play. But with these children sent from above Comes stronger faith, and richer love. And soon they’ll know the privilege given In caring for their gift from heaven. Their precious charge, so meek and mild Is heaven’s very special child

The only thing that hurt me was the very thing that made me want to fight to begin with... Her pain, her pain that I couldn’t take away I didn’t let it cripple me but instead, it fueled me It fueled me to search when no answer

was given It fueled me to try even when it seemed impossible It fueled me to hope in the midst of what appeared hopeless And even when all else failed, and my imperfections got the best of me, With her, I still felt super Because She only knew me as love She only knew me as strength She only knew me as protector She knew, that no matter what came our way, I was standing guard ready to do whatever necessary to keep her safe So now, I stand Bolder Stronger Wiser Knowing that by no means will I ever be defeated because I became a superhero the day I gave birth to one! For Mommy’s Mooda; the strongest person I know... Thank you!
