Two from two for plucky Pigs STOCKSBRIDGE RUFC maintained their 100% record, defeating a committed but limited Sheffield Oaks side at a blustery Coal Pit Lane at the weekend. Eventually running out winners by 27-0 to secure second place in the league table on points difference. With former skipper Pete Newton injured and Matt Nesbitt unavailable, Stocksbridge welcomed back the mercurial Paul Kelly at centre, with Liam O’Leary switching to the back row to accompany returning club captain Ricky Rowett. Ben Westby, Ricky Christopherson and James Booth made for an experienced replacement bench.

Stocksbridge were on the front foot from the kick off and the home side had 80% possession along with 90% territory and camped on the Oaks goal line.

Through a mixture of stout determined defence, some poor handing in the difficult conditions and over playing it in the pack, they were made to wait until 15 minutes in for scrum half Adam Frith to sneak through a gap and touch down for the first try, just too wide for Bowskill to convert. There followed a procession of Stocksbridge attacks and just before half time Frith crossed to bag his second, again sniping at the back of a dominant pack of forwards, to jink past a couple of would be defenders, but again too far out for Bowskill to add the extras in a growing gale. The visitors were certainly relieved to hear the half time whistle with only a 10 point deficit to contend with. The second stanza followed almost exactly the same pattern as the first, with the home forwards totally dominating their opponents and it seemed just a matter of time before the floodgates would open. Liam O’Leary made the most of an attacking scrum, where Oaks did have some success, and broke on the blind side to cross in the corner for another unconverted

Stocksbridge 27-0 Sheffield Oaks try. In truth Stocksbridge Rugby were never in any danger or under any periods of pressure from their beleaguered opponents, who never threatened the home side’s try line in 80 minutes of rugby. Stocksbridge were however, guilty of making unforced errors and taking wrong attacking options, which in turn kept the scoreline almost respectable. When the Piggies did move the ball wider, fly half Bowskill was on hand to finish a sweeping move, going in unchallenged in the corner. Ryan Smith crossed

the line soon after but failed to ground the ball correctly. Sam Whitaker capped another strong performance with a barnstorming, bonus point try almost on the final whistle, Bowskill was able to add the conversion to leave the final score 27-0. It was quite a frustrating afternoon for all still led to another five-point victory as head Coach Keenan declared afterwards: “Whether we had won by 80 or by 27 points, we still only get five competition points, so there are positives to be had. We nilled them too, showing a mean defence.”

Keenan will be well aware that Stocksbridge Rugby will need to improve on this performance to seriously achieve their goal of challenging for the league title this year.

Stocksbridge are scheduled to take a break from their league fixtures this weekend and are due to entertain Dronfield seconds at Coal Pit Lane with a 3pm kick off. Coach Keenan will want to use this match to run the rule over some of the fringe members of the squad, so everyone has the opportunity to stake a claim for a shirt.

War Memorial Ladies flying start

At Ollerton it was Bex Shaw and Kathryn Mudge (pen) with the goals but it was the defensive performance that really took the eye to ensure a hard earned clean sheet. At home on Sunday Oughtibridge pressed from the start but didn’t get the goal their play

deserved with Woodlands playing effectively on the break, the pacey Jody Scott looking dangerous up front.

of a threat after half time but the game wasn’t over until Mudge smashed home from a tight angle on 68 minutes.

From a great move Oughtibridge took the lead on the half hour, new signing Millie Kenyon volleying home Mudge’s sweet cross. All the hard work was undone immediately with a super finish by Scott to make it 1-1.

Both sides worked hard to the final whistle with youngster Emma Wall coming on for a promising home debut. This Sunday, September 16, Oughtibridge welcome Eastwood Town Ladies to the War Memorial at 2pm. The following week they have a glamour home FA Cup tie against FC United of Manchester Ladies.

As half time approached Oughtibridge got the break they needed, Kenyon’s corner was spilled by the keeper on her line with Jen Selman stabbing home for 2-1. Woodlands became less

Oughtibridge made the best start when Adam Duckworth tapped in from close range after Wilson Coupe’s header across the area caused problems. But a second followed when Strachan Sampson beautifully set up Ross Brown who made no mistake firing in and David Hudson’s team looked in control. Yet Norton scored twice in the early stages of the second half to draw level, Callum Frith setting up Jack Waymouth to tap home and then Michael Gibbons centred for Harry Mitchell to finish.

With the game evenly poised, the next goal was crucial, and it went Oughtibridge’s way when Duckworth glanced home a header for his second of the game. Norton pushed on for a third but were caught on the break and the excellent Danny Booth added the fourth with just five minutes to go.
