GULF AIR LAUNCHES DOUBLE MILES PROMOTION FOR AIRLINE’S NEWEST DESTINATIONS
ulf Air, the national carrier of the Kingdom of Bahrain, announced the start of a “Double Miles Promotion” to coincide with the launch of its newest destinations, giving its frequent flyer program (FFP) members the opportunity to fly to Al Maktoum International Airport in Dubai, Thiruvananthapuram in India, or Mashhad in Iran and earn double miles. Kavita Sharma AlJassim, Gulf Air’s Senior Manager of Customer Experience, commented on the promotion: “We constantly strive to make every facet of our FalconFlyers’ travel experience more rewarding. This FFP promotion celebrates the launch of our newest destinations and
gives our members the opportunity to travel to them while earning even more miles.” Gulf Air will become the first full-service network carrier to fly into Al Maktoum International when it commenced a daily evening service on December 8, linking Bahrain to the new airport. Starting on the December 14, Bahrain’s national carrier also operates four weekly flights to Iran’s second most populous city, Mashhad, while flights to Trivandrum International Airport commenced on December 15 with five weekly flights. Gulf Air’s FalconFlyer programme, with its incentives and benefits for the airline’s frequent flyers, has garnered positive feedback and been well embraced by Gulf Air passengers with growth across its different network countries. ETIHAD AIRWAYS CROWNED WORLD’S LEADING AIRLINE FOR THE FIFTH CONSECUTIVE YEAR Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, enjoyed stunning success at this year’s World Travel Awards last night, taking top honours for the fifth year in a row. At a ceremony in Doha, Qatar, Etihad Airways took home the prestigious titles of World’s Leading Airline, World’s Leading First Class, and World’s Leading Airline Cabin Crew. TURKISH AIRLINES ADDS SITA KIOSKS AS PASSENGER NUMBERS RISE Turkish Airlines will install 80 new self-service check-in kiosks from SITA in three of Turkey’s busiest airports to enhance customer service for its 38 million annual passengers. With the new kiosks, SITA reaches a landmark 2,000 S3 AirportConnect kiosks delivered worldwide, bringing efficiency and flexibility to airlines, airports and passengers. Mehmet Buyukkaytan, Senior Vice President, Ground Handling Operations, Turkish Airlines, said: “Turkish Airlines is growing at double-digit rates, while maintaining its strong reputation on service quality. SITA’s kiosks shorten aircraft turnaround time and help us optimize our resources. Most importantly, they support increasing passenger satisfaction by reducing queues and offering more flexibility to the passengers on their travel experiences.” To celebrate the 2,000th S3 kiosk deployed globally, SITA has presented Turkish Airlines with a black kiosk specially-branded with the airline’s logo and a floor decal reading “2000th SITA S3 kiosk.” The special kiosk is located at Turkish Airlines’ headquarters in Istanbul. GULF AIR BECOMES THE FIRST AIRLINE IN THE WORLD TO BRING TRADITIONAL MIDDLE EASTERN GAMES TO ITS NEW INFLIGHT OFFERING Gulf Air, tthe national carrier of the Kingdom of Bahrain, unveiled its new inflight entertainment (IFE) games offering becoming the first airline in the world to launch six traditional Middle Eastern games aboard its flights. The new games include the regional favorites of Tawle, an Arabian-style backgammon game, Basha, a popular regional card game as well as a modern creation, Moosiqar, which offers players the chance to create melodies with one of the Middle East’s oldest instruments, the “Oud,” using familiar and intuitive controls. The new set of games, distributed by Ensemble Media contain a sub-set designed by Quirkat, an independent Emirati multiplatform video games developer. The Quirkat games were created specifically with the Middle Eastern consumer in mind, with highquality graphics and exciting content that are sure to make them a hit among all the airline’s passengers. Basha, Moosiqar, MENA Speed, Quirkat and two versions of Tawla, along with fourteen other new games, supplied to Gulf Air by Ensemble Media, have now been successfully installed across the airline’s entire fleet. Gulf Air’s Acting Chief Commercial Officer, Ahmed Janahi commented: “As one of the oldest carriers in the region Gulf Air has always tried to maintain links with tradition. Throughout its 63-year history the airline has become renowned for its traditional Arabian hospitality. NOK AIR AND SCOOT TO ESTABLISH NEW LOW-COST CARRIER Nok Air and Scoot have signed a memorandum of understanding to establish a new low-cost airline to be based in Bangkok. The new airline will be named NokScoot and will be based at Don Mueang International Airport. It will operate widebody aircraft on medium and long-haul international routes. Nok and its alliance will have a 51% stake and Scoot will have 49%. The initial investment will be THB 2 billion. “We are excited at the prospect of expanding Nok’s presence overseas, and to be doing so with the assistance of Scoot. It has always been Nok’s goal to offer Thais more choice and more value, of which this venture is yet another example. We’re also excited at the opportunity to encourage more inbound tourists, to boost the Thai economy,” said Nok Air CEO, Patee Sarasin. Added Scoot CEO, Campbell Wilson: “Thailand is Asia’s premier tourist destination and logical hub for Scoot to expand to. We at Scoot are very pleased to be working with Nok, an established and respected Thai low-cost airline, on the establishment of NokScoot. In supporting Nok with Scoot’s experience in medium-haul widebody operations, we look forward to developing a new market segment and offering Thai consumers and travellers to Thailand more travel options.” The establishment of the new airline is subject to regulatory approvals. Details about its fleet, products and route network will be announced at a later date.
ETIHAD AIRWAYS TO INCREASE GLOBAL FOOTPRINT WITH INTRODUCTION OF EIGHT NEW DESTINATIONS IN 2014 Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, has announced plans to introduce three more destinations to its core international network in 2014. Continuing the growth of its first decade, the airline will commence daily services to Rome (Italy) and Jaipur (India), together with four flights per week to Yerevan (Armenia). The new routes will join a previously announced daily service to Los Angeles and three flights per week to Dallas (United States), plus daily services to Zurich (Switzerland), Perth (Australia) and Medina (Saudi Arabia), all of which are scheduled to commence in 2014. The eight new routes will increase Etihad Airways’ worldwide network to 102 destinations next year. James Hogan, President and Chief Executive Officer of Etihad Airways, said: “This is part of a measured and strategic growth plan, which will reinforce the future of the national carrier of the UAE and the vital role it plays in the emergence of Abu Dhabi as a global aviation hub. “Together with our codeshare and equity alliance partners, we have created a virtual network of more than 375 destinations. This collaborative model gives us scale and enhanced global market access in constrained regions. But more importantly, it strengthens our customer proposition by offering more choice and better connections across our hub in Abu Dhabi.” Etihad Airways’ equity alliance airlines presently include airberlin, Aer Lingus, Air Serbia, Air Seychelles, Darwin Airline (subject to regulatory approval), Jet Airways, and Virgin Australia. The 2014 network plan also makes provision for increases in frequency and connectivity on existing routes, with more than 20 per cent growth expected in weekly departures. To support the next phase of its global network expansion, Etihad Airways will receive 20 aircraft deliveries next year, including the much-awaited arrival of its first 787-9 Dreamliners and Airbus A380s. The airline will also receive five Boeing 777-200LRs, one Boeing 777-300ER, three Airbus A320s, three Airbus A321s, four Airbus A330-200s and one Airbus A330 Freighter in 2014.
