“New Voice”, the first ever bilingual platform wherein students of all year groups are welcomed and invited to reveal their inner thoughts, to speak out their opinions, and to be heard. If you ever had a wish to express yourself, to shout out what you think, YCIS can now provide with the perfect opportunity and to inspire more aspiring minds within our school. This new magazine will include many diverse aspects including news, reviews, interviews and much more, where students are given the freedom to put into words their thoughts on current world events, or even merely just on a recent album they have heard. We hope that “New Voice” will encourage all to think further, and will provide to you, the Yew Chung students and faculty, a new source of entertainment and will act as a doorway to many new and exciting things. —— “New Voice” Chief Editor of English Department Jasmine Harris

THE THE NEW NEW BIRTH BIRTH OF OF THE THE NEW NEW VOICE VOICE

Esther Ng For the past several months, you may have played host to a small emerging thought bubble in your mind. Your idea may have been about the better use of space in the school library, allowing students access to the fitness room, changes to the uniform policy or many others. However, because your idea was still in its uncertain state, you thought it unworthy to share with others and left it at the back of your mind. Or in another scenario, that thought bubble might have already shaped itself into a well-formulated proposal. But you hesitated when you tried to put it on pen and paper. Your idea was so rare, and perhaps so daring, that you though others would dismiss it as a fantasy rather than an achievable dream. Once again, the thought is locked away, waiting for its moment to shine. “New Voice” welcomes all ideas. Whether or not it will blossom in the end, we believe that all ideas are priceless, that they should be given consideration and the opportunity to be explored and to mature. There is no requirement for how these ideas are to be packaged; the only requirement is respect for the opinions and suggestions made by other readers.

“New Voice” is not simply a suggestion forum, it is a place where ideas from students can be shared with and heard by the rest of the Yew Chung community. Other readers may be able to offer their own flare of imagination and suggestions to your idea, helping to build it into something possible. All juniors and seniors are welcome to join in these discussions on school life, as there is no age limit to thinking outside the box. Although the idea to create “New Voice” was conceived by the student council and several other Year 12 students, the magazine does not represent any particular student organisation or year group. It is representative of the entire student community in Yew Chung.

“New Voice” hopes that all students will actively embrace this opportunity to engage themselves in healthy debate and discussion about school life, facilities and policies.

BIG SHOUT OUT!!!

YC's Got Talent 2015

This is it! The most thrilling event everyone is looking forward to - YC’s Got Talent 2015! With the various talents showcased by Yew Chung students, I bet all of you went to see it. If you miss the first auditions, don’t worry, you can come to see at least the Final Auditions at the end of March. Please come and join us and see how our students come out of their comfort zone and show off their talents!

TEDx YCIS HK Ideas Worth Spreading Almost a hundred people filled the auditorium to watch the first ever TEDx YCISHK. Organized by Mrs. Poon and other dedicated students, TEDx YCISHK invited four speakers who all had interesting ideas that they wanted to share with the audience. Euan Seow, a promising young computer programmer, shared how he expresses himself through coding and how he overcame obstacles to achieve his dream. Dr. Lyso, Vice Principal of YCIS HK Secondary, spoke about how you should help those in need and ask yourself "Why can't we do more?", no matter how big or small, you can always make a difference. Johnson Li, an aspiring young piano player shared how the little things matter and being meticulous in what you do can make a big difference. Gabriel Hackman, an alumni from YCIS HK, shared his first hand experience of finding his identity and what matters most is how you identify yourself, not what others call you. Apart from the speakers, there were also a few other highlights of the event. At the Blue Gallery, popular food vendors provided snacks and refreshments, and a few of our teachers and students played Jazz. Karan Chainrai, one of the organisers of the TEDx event, told The Pulse that it was one of the most inspirational events that he had witnessed and was proud to be a part of it.

Senior students and junior students in collaboration

Richard Kong

One of the issues within our school is that there is not much interaction between senior students and junior students, as students tend to stay within their own year groups. This may not deemed to be a big problem as everyone is content with socialising with their own circle of friends and classmates, however this may bring some disadvantages. There is the possibility of students’ social skills decreasing, and junior students will also miss the opportunity to gain help and support from senior students. On the other hand, as more experienced learners, senior students can always assist junior students in terms of academics or other areas, so we believe that interaction between the two groups should be further encouraged within YCIS. In order to achieve this, there should be more meetings and events between them, so junior students may be able to feel more at ease around senior students and will approach them for help. Already the new CCA system, where the activities are made compulsory and are held during school hours, has forged friendships between year groups. Meetings can also take place with the aid of the student council, whereas the house can take charge of organizing fun events so that junior students would like to join these. Previously, the house had already attempted to organize such events (e.g. Running man), which turned out to be successful, and we hope to see more of these events in the future. If more of events are organized, it is likely to bring about a harmonic interaction between seniors and juniors, which is beneficial for the school’s well being.

House

我們隻有每年在Sports day和Founder’s day才會想到House的存在。

house unicorn yellow house sabertooth red house phoenix green house dragon

The The Music Music Scene Scene

Christy Ho

Discovery College has the Battle of the House Bands, Renaissance College has Amplify Rock Concerts, International Christian School has Cabarets and Jazz Cafes, Island School is the host of their Battle of the Bands/Vocalists, which features a musical showdown between all five ESF secondary schools. Even YCIS Shanghai has their own Battle of the Bands event. So where are our own school bands? Where are our drummers, bassists, vocalists and guitar players? Other than our annual music concerts and violin, cello and piano filled showcases, we don’t seem to have much of an edge to our music scene. The truth is more students in our school are trained in classical instruments. Many Asian parents have their children learn classical instruments at a young age. You have probably never had a friend who played electric guitars when they were 5 years old, but for many Asians, they probably would have already mastered the basics of piano at that age. This occurence is as bizarre as it can ever be. Many parents believe that this as a way to get ready for their child’s university applications. Playing musical instruments show how well-rounded their child is, and it is a brilliant way to gain achievement awards in their child's in other areas outside school. Classical instruments have exams that are verified all across the globe, and are internationally recognised by many universities. Those ABRSM music grade certificates are the direct representation of your musical talents, which is why many parents train their children rigorously in these classical instruments. This is a completely difference case for instruments such as electric guitars and keyboards. Mozart played his classical piano more than 250 years ago, whereas electric guitars and bands only became popular mainly in the 80’s. There are exams available for these rock instruments at the Trinity College of London and Rock school, but their awards aren’t accepted everywhere by universities. Today, everyone seems so invested into classical instruments, the rockier and grungier side of music seem to have disappeared completely within our school, and causing students to miss out on a completely different, brilliant side of music.

012

We need a stage where students can rock out with their guitars, jam on their bass and hammer on their drums. When it comes down to it all, it is up to the students themselves to create their own high school music scene.

MATTHEW WONG

A: Althea, M:MATTHEW

A:

As one of the most important people of the prefect team, your post has always been regarded as one of the dullest positions. You and your team are always ex pected to take great responsibility in taking charge of the students’ behavior at YCIS. Taking into account all the previous factors, how do you and your prefect team try to perform your duties under all that weight?

M:

My job always leaves people with the impression of being dull and dry, but the truth is otherwise. We, the prefect team as a whole, actually have helped run many in teresting activities. For example, although one of our jobs as prefects is to help en sure that the primary Open Day runs smoothly and prevent any accidents from oc curing, we also play with our “young pupil friends” at the campus playground. I would say that it is a great experience working with my friends and classmates.

A:

What will your guys do when there is bullying?

M:

We actually do not have frequent encounters with bullying or similar incidents during school or after school hours. But if we do, it is very difficult for us to decide whether the students push and shove each other for fun or whether they are really having serious spats. Even if we were met with a bullying situation, it is equally hard for me to prevent them to stop and resolve the situation with perfect impartiality.

A:

I can merely say that the prefect team has many academically outstanding and also attractive girls, like the current head girl Daisy. I know that although many people have different roles to play among the prefect team, there are still many chances and opportunities for members to communicate and interact with each other. Is there anything interesting or amusing for you to share with us?

M:

Yes, as you said, there are many beautiful girls among our team and I really appreciate the time I spend with them. But that doesn’t mean that I treat them with any priority, I judge all my members with equal eyes. When we renewed the school bulletin board, those girls played an important role to fill the board with many color ful elements and that was a really memorable moment, at least for me.

A:

The last question, when we decided to use you as one of the front elites for the first edition of “New Voice”, we received overwhelmingly positive responses from students. Among them are fellow girls who are curious about your state of relation ship. In order to give them a few clues, can you briefly talk about your “preference” when it comes to girls?

M:

I don’t have a girl since I take the IB course as my top priority, and it is so nerve-racking I hardly have any extra time. But I guess I would like a girl who is respectful to both her parents and relatives, strong-minded and independent.

A:

Thanks for your excellent devotion. We hope to see our promising prefect team bringing up Yew Chung to a whole new level of both fun and harmony!

A:

A:

A:

A: h

M: A:

NICKY MAC CALLUM

A: Althea N:Nicky

A:

A:

A:

A:

A:

A:

016

A:

How you feel about being the president of student council? Do you have hard time when you need to give consideration to both student council and to studying?

N:

I believe the former student councils have done the outstanding jobs but I do believe there’s a huge space improvement. I wanted to do something new to enrich students’ lives. This prompted me to take up the role of the student council’s president. As I have mentioned before, I believe that I could do something more; many others hold the same ideal but they refused to go one step further. Finally, I decided to set my heart and take up the role of president. As one of the members of the student council, I try to cooperate with other members in order to provide the greatest service to the students. However, it is common that students would not be satisfied or even disagree with our proposals and activities, and those experiences really push me to wards the brink of giving up the job. For example, I remembered at a con ference we had a while ago and we discovered that there were an unthinkable amount of things left to do and this really struck at our team as a whole.

A:

I would say that IB is a nerve-racking course to learn, and the position of the president of Student Council is another tough task to undertake. How ever, you have decided to put them all in your pocket at the same time. Have you ever had the thought or whim to give them up? And have you tried to make any compromises? And what is that?

N:

Honestly, I am not a model student and I can say that I meet the basic IB course requirements. However, I decided that I should put more attention towards my studying and use the time that others spend socializing to do my job in the student council. Ideally, I would find a perfect balance between those two, but that is normally not the case. When I tune myself to the student council my mind is so fully packed with it that it wouldn’t stop.

A:

As the current president of student council, do you have any suggestions on what aspects to improve on when it comes to the daily life at school?

N:

Among the chief principles of the student council, there is actually one dedi cated to the improvement of the school’s infrastructures. However, for us we primarily put our attention on having new activities to enrich school life. That’s because other student organizations and former student councils have im proved the school’s infrastructure up to a high standard, giving our students a good studying environment. But if I were to be really critical about it, I would say that the school should serve better quality foods to make up for the high price.

A:

Thanks for your cooperation! “New Voice” wishes the student council a good run this academic year, and for them to be able to create fulfilling memories for both the students and teachers at Yew Chung International School!

NICK SU

A: Althea N:Nick

A:

As a well-known student in Yew Chung, you own the title of the Red House Cap tain. On top of that your influential public speaking tactics leave audiences with a deep and long-lasting impression. Now that you have been chosen to be one of the front elites for the first edition of “New Voice”, I believe you have something to say, don’t you?

N:

I am really honored and appreciative that so many students leave such positive feedback for my public speaking skills. I also want to say that it is the school that gives me these opportunities for me to hone my skills.

A:

You have done many speeches, are there still some people who give you suggestions to improve your speech?

N:

I do hear many people saying that my speeches are too long. People have even said that the school has made new regulations to restrict the time of each an nouncement to one minute and the content to be squeezed into only one page of PowerPoint! As a result, I always take several announcements and present them at the same time so that I can have more time to express myself.

A:

Everyone has noticed that in your presentations or announcements you make frequent mentions of your girlfriend. For example, you have previously recalled the masquerade experience between you and your girlfriend to promote students to go for the Christmas ball this year. I’m sure that your girlfriend is a rather big part your life, so would you call yourself a “hen-pecked” person?

N:

Like many people, I have my own undesirable history so to speak, and I was once a quite plump. I became too excited when seeing someone I liked and I followed her so closely that I frightened her away. Similarly, even when we became closed friends, she still wouldn’t agree to a relationship and that really affected me. As a result when I arrived in Hong Kong, I soon started to jog back and forth from school to my home everyday and climbed hills almost every weekend.

A:

As the current Red House captain, do you consider yourself as being committed to something that you feel quite comfortable and qualified with, or something that is outside your comfort zone?

N:

I would say I am acting within my comfort zone since I was the Red House vice-captain last year and I’m quite familiar with the basic procedures. However, one notable difference is that I have to come to school every Tuesday at 7:30 to conduct presentations and that is quite out of my comfort zone. But Dr. Lyso has helped not only me, but House as well; he always gives good advice so we don’t have to do things in a roundabout way, which increases the efficiency of our work. Because of this, I feel that I am under less pressure than last year..

A:

Thanks for your participation and patience. We hope that Red House can have another wonderful year. Go Red House!!

A:

A:

A:

A:

A:

A:

What should Japan do?

Ryan Cheng

Last month, the beheading of Japanese journalist Kenji Goto and pilot Lt. Moaz al-Kasasbeh shocked the world, causing outrage around the globe. Yet, surprisingly, President Shinzo Abe did not decide to accept ISIS’s demands for pilot Sajida al-Rishawi nor the $200m ransom. He merely called the beheading a “heinous act”, and has said that he would work with other countries to bring justice to the beheaders of Goto. Though this may seem like a needless sacrifice, especially when the beheading could have been prevented, it was actually what Abe needed to do. Many people forget the way in which ISIS works. Media has always been a way in which ideas and thoughts can be influenced. Even everyday media seeks to present an image or influence ideas, or at least does so without active intention. For example, advertisements wish to present an image of their product that will make that product attractive to its target market. ISIS’s videos are no different, intentionally or otherwise, as they cause fear and influences decision and thought. In fact, in an analysis by the BBC, they state that through the fear deployed by these videos, it has caused Jordanians to question the air raid policies that later caused the burning of Lt. Moaz al-Kasasbeh. ISIS needs to win a media war, but more importantly, so does Japan. Wars on terror are now characterised by the media landscape. Charlie Hebdo, as an example, is seen as an example of free speech against terrorism, and one of the major motives behind republishing the cartoons are to stand up against violence. Comparatively, Japan at the same time cannot appear weak against ISIS and submit themselves to their demands or show themself to be influenced by ISIS’s use of media. In the media war, to show which side is the strongest, they must be willing to sacrifice a few lives. However in the end, war costs lives, and this is no different. Similarly, ISIS is trying to win a media war; by committing violent acts; it is acting as someone that stands up against the so-called “enemies of Islam”. Japan cannot risk letting itself become yet another victim of ISIS. But whether Japan can bring Goto’s murderers to justice is another question. Japan must do this, or it seeks to present itself as a country willing to sacrifice its citizens’ lives. The landscape of international politics may not result in cooperation that Abe desires. Very few others hold stakes in this issue, and it remains to be seen whether Japan can change the situation. In fact, it is possible that it may not happen and the defeat of ISIS by diplomatic or military means may be the only way. In the end, as Japan tries to act, the shockwaves of the event have already affected many, and Japan’s decision to not do anything will be constantly questioned.

#duang

—The new slang word flood across the Chinese Internet Ellisa Lin Have you noticed that the word “duang” has spread all over the internet over the past few days? Massive numbers of the hashtag “duang” has appeared on instagram, weibo and many other Chinese Internet forums. The word “duang” (pronounced “dwong”) originated as the imitation of a sound that appeared in a shampoo advertisement, where famous Hong Kong actor, Jackie Chan was featured.

Chan has been the spokesperson for this shampoo for many years. During the advertisement, after the usage of the product he described his hair as just…. duang! This advertisement was recognized as one of the most classic Chinese commercials after its release in 2004. However, the word “duang” did not become viral at that time, and instead has resurfaced after eleven years. Someone on the Internet found this nonsensical word hilarious, and recently created a musical parody of the new Mandarin hit song, “My Skating Shoes” featuring a voiceover of Chan in the commercial. The constant “duang” sound appeared throughout the parody, and this brain washing soundtrack caused the be lated reaction of the public in regards to the advertisement itself to rise.

Anti Parallel Traders Scuffle Broke Out in Yuen Long

Sunny Wu

Clashes have recently happened in Yuen Long, near the China border where 400 protestors, mostly teenagers against parallel traders abusing visa obligations held protests. The protesters originally marched on peacefully, as a show of their discontent with parallel traders from mainland China misusing visa obligations. However when the police started interfering, the attempted to contain the situation by forcefully using pepper sprays and batons. Violence soon erupted, resulting with many injuries, the worst case being a female protestor who was left heavily bleeding when hit by a police baton. As a result of the chaos, many shops were shut down and traffic of the main roads was halted for a brief period of time. Early on Monday, a police spokeswoman has said that 36 people aged 13 to 74 have been accused of possessing offensive weapons, assault, disorder, and fighting. The demonstration was really a mirroring of the recent resentments against Chinese tourists and is ripples from the Occupy Central movement, where the police displayed a similar show of force. Demonstrators complained it was the increasing overflow of parallel traders who started inflation and congestion within New Territories. Some protestors even raised the Crown Colony flag during the scuffle, calling for greater independence from China and Hong Kong nationalism. "There is a lot of anger from other people on Chinese smugglers because we just don't like how they drive up all the prices, drive up everything, create a lot of chaos, and we aren't benefiting from it,'' said protester Kelvin Lee, from Hong Kong Indigenous, one of the two groups that organized the demonstration.

MOVIE REVIEW Kitty Lai d *may contain mild spoilers* “So, are we going to stand here all day? Or are we going to fight?” -Harry Hart The spy comedy “Kingsman: The Secret Service” is a good choice if you are looking for action, comedy and relaxation all rolled in one. Harry Hart (Collin Firth), top agent in the secret intelligence service, sponsors the talented young rebel Eggsy (Taron Eggerton) to participate in the Kingsman selection. Meanwhile, billionaire Valentine intends to use advanced technology to conduct a massive culling of the human race. The plan is soon discovered by Harry who is killed as a result. Now Eggsy not only has the task to avenge his friend and life mentor, but also to save the world from destruction. The movie is definitely a good choice for the holidays or even the weekend. The plot of the movie is not only tightly constructed, graced with witty and humorous lines, but is also deeply thought provoking. On one hand, Valentine manipulates human beings to kill one another by the emission of sound waves, betraying the modern technology by the abusive use of electronic goods. On the other hand, Eggsy’s determination to keep on living proves to others that one may succeed regardless of one’s class or origin. In addition to the captivating plot, the charming costumes stayed in my mind even after watching the movie, as the agents insist on wearing classic and smart suits even when fighting. All the attractive wear and detailed accessories on the agents, together with their black-rimmed glasses make them look stunning and refined. However, there is excessive violence in the movie, although it is neither gory nor bloody; the director included a scene towards the end in which peoples’ heads exploded into fireworks was surprisingly humorous but yet no less disturbing. Be mentally prepared before watching this fantastic film.
