Who Are We?

What Are We Doing?

SkyLight Paths Publishing is creating a place where people of different spiritual traditions come together for challenge and inspiration, a place where we can help each other understand the mystery that lies at the heart of our existence. Through spirituality, our religious beliefs are increasingly becoming a part of our lives— rather than apart from our lives. While many of us may be more interested than ever in spiritual growth, we may be less firmly planted in traditional religion. Yet, we do want to deepen our relationship to the sacred, to learn from our own as well as from other faith traditions and to practice in new ways. SkyLight Paths sees both believers and seekers as a community that increasingly transcends traditional boundaries of religion and denomination—people wanting to learn from each other, walking together, finding the way.

SkyLight Paths recognizes that believers and seekers of different faith traditions, or no specific tradition, want to listen to and learn from each other as never before. We want to help them. This does not mean that our readers leave their own religious traditions behind. It does mean that they are open to one faith enriching another. SkyLight Paths will help believers deepen their faith and help seekers in their search. We will succeed only if our books make a difference in your life. We are all walking together, finding the way.

Inspiration—NEW BOOKS

THE HEARTBEAT

OF GOD Finding the Sacred in the Middle of Everything Katharine Jefferts Schori

K AT H A R I N E

Insights from one of the premier women in world religion, on the intersections of the sacred and the secular. “We are all connected,” writes Katharine Jefferts Schori, “as human beings with each other, as one nation with all other nations, and as the human species with the whole of our environment. At a population of 7 billion we can no longer, if we ever could, afford to ignore those interconnections. The welfare of the least among us and around us will eventually be our own.” In this book, Jefferts Schori explores those connections as she looks at the intersections of faith with the major issues of our day—poverty, climate change, the economy, health care. How does faith speak to those issues, and what is the faith response? How can believers from an astonishing variety of faith traditions find common ground while honoring the divine, serving one another and creating a deeper community? The Heartbeat of God will be an upclose look at the “secular” issues of our day that have profoundly religious roots. Adapted from Bishop Jefferts Schori’s many speeches and sermons delivered around the country and around the world, the chapters in The Heartbeat of God will look at the many ways our faith and our lives are intimately woven together. The author of course writes from the perspective of her Christian tradition, but also reaches out with sensitivity and grace to an interfaith audience.

Self-Help / Spirituality—NEW BOOKS

SPIRITUALLY HEALTHY DIVORCE

Navigating Disruption with Insight & Hope Carolyne Call

How to chart a course to wholeness in the aftermath of divorce. This practical and soul-strengthening resource serves as a spiritual map for regaining your bearings, helping you move through the twists and turns of divorce in a spiritually healthy way. Drawing on her work as a pastor and counselor— and her personal experience of divorce—Carolyne Call proposes a three-pronged approach to help you reset your compass on a new destination—wholeness. She looks at how and where divorce-related disruptions take place; identifies the potential for each disruption to trigger self-defeating emotions and behavior; and explores how to heal in each disruption’s wake. Supported by first-person accounts from men and women of a variety of faith traditions who have found their way through divorce, Call helps you identify: • Where you want to go—“I want to be true to who I am” • Where you don’t want to go—the “cul-de-sacs” of bitterness, resentment, victimization and guilt • What you can do to get there Each chapter includes reflective questions and practical exercises. Appendices offer a structure for group sessions for use in churches or faith-based groups.

Family / Relationships 6 x 9, 224 pp (est), Quality PB Original 978-1-59473-288-1 $16.99 Avail. September 2010 Author’s Home Area: South Bend, IN

Carolyne Call, an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ, is director of the Office of Civic and Social Engagement and a lecturer in psychology at Saint Mary’s College in Notre Dame, Indiana. She serves as a spiritual adviser for those in the process of divorce while also conducting workshops and retreats on spiritual, psychological and moral development.

Personal Growth—NEW BOOKS

DECISION-MAKING & SPIRITUAL DISCERNMENT The Sacred Art of Finding Your Way Nancy L. Bieber

A companion for staying spiritually grounded and open to divine wisdom as we shape our lives. When it comes time to make important decisions in our lives, it is very human to want to feel that the decisions we are making are good. When we approach decisionmaking as a spiritual practice, we are recognizing that we need the aid of the wise and loving Spirit whose Light exceeds our own. This is the practice of spiritual discernment, the traditional religious name for listening and attending to God’s guidance. While traditional religious language speaks of finding “God’s will,” the approach in this book is that we are active participants, co-creators with the Divine in shaping our lives. Drawing on twenty-five years of experience as a psychologist and fifteen years of experience as a spiritual director, Nancy L. Bieber presents three essential aspects of Spirit-led decision-making: Willingness—being open to God’s wisdom and love Attentiveness—noticing what is true, discerning the path right for us Responsiveness—taking steps forward as the way becomes clear

Self-Help / Spirituality 51⁄2 x 81⁄2, 192 pp (est), Quality PB Original 978-1-59473-289-8 $16.99 Avail. September 2010 Author’s Home Area: Philadelphia

With gentle encouragement, Bieber shows us how to weave these themes together so that they strengthen our decision-making process and help us find our path. Each chapter is enriched by detailed and practical spiritual exercises, which serve as tools for our process of decision-making. An appendix includes a guide for using this book in groups, with reading assignments, practices and meditations for each session.

Nancy L. Bieber is a teacher, psychologist and spiritual director with thirty years of experience in working with individuals and groups in transition and change. A core leader with Oasis Ministries for Spiritual Formation, she leads spiritual formation retreats and workshops around the country. She has taught at Lancaster Theological Seminary.

Bible—NEW BOOKS

ECCLESIASTES

Annotated & Explained Translation and Annotation by Rabbi Rami Shapiro

Living with joy in an insecure world. Twenty-three hundred years ago an unnamed Hebrew sage known only as Koheleth, the Teacher, rocked the ancient Jewish world with a critique of society that shattered conventional notions of God, piety, politics and power. Beginning with its opening broadside, “Hevel havalim!”—not futility or vanity as most translations would have it, but “breath, vapor and impermanence,” Ecclesiastes teaches you how to live in a world where nothing lasts and justice is illusory; a world devoted to accumulating power, wealth, pleasure and even knowledge that leaves you drowning in anxiety and needless suffering. Neither revelation nor prophecy, Ecclesiastes is a rational and countercultural guide to living with joy in the midst of uncertainty and insecurity. Ecclesiastes’ God demands neither sacrifice nor adherence to commandments, but offers instead a practical lifestyle rooted in moderation, meaningful work, and friendship. Rami Shapiro’s translation of and commentary on Ecclesiastes restores this ancient text to its timeless place as a guide to living sanely in an often insane world.

NEW IN PAPERBACK—Religion WHO ARE

THE REAL CHOSEN PEOPLE? The Meaning of Chosenness in Judaism, Christianity and Islam Reuven Firestone, PhD

What does it mean to be “chosen” and why did God have to choose? New in paperback! Religious people who define themselves as monotheists have often advanced the idea that their relationship with God is unique and superior to all others. Their relationship supersedes those that came before, and is superior to those that have followed. This phenomenon tends to be expressed in terms not only of supersessionism, but also of “chosenness” or “election.” Who is most beloved by God? What expression of the divine will is the most perfect? Which relationship reflects God’s ultimate demands or desire? In this fascinating examination of the religious phenomenon of chosenness, Reuven Firestone explores the idea of covenant, and the expressions of supersessionism as articulated through the scriptures of the three major monotheistic religions: Judaism, Christianity and Islam. He explores how and why the ongoing competition and friction between these religions came about, and offers thoughts about how to overcome it.

Are you: Feeling anxious? Feeling depressed because of the loss of health, a relationship or a job? Grieving the loss of a loved one? Grieving loss by a suicide? Feeling hopeless? Concerned about a friend who has suicidal thoughts? This wise and helpful resource explores the nature of personal suffering and brokenness and the potential for personal crisis as a source of strength and renewal instead of despair and death. Examining the personal journeys of biblical and historical figures such as Moses, Maimonides, Abraham Lincoln and Martin Buber—as well as the author’s own personal experience with despair—it looks at brokenness as an inescapable element of the human condition. It traces the path of suffering from despair to depression to desperation to the turning point—healing—when firsthand knowledge of suffering can be transformed into blessing. Whether you have encountered despair and depression personally—through illness, loss, trauma or betrayal—or you know someone who is struggling with brokenness, this book will provide an informative, safe and comforting look at the nature of despair and the ways you can overcome it. “Reminds us that we are not alone, suffering is not new, and healing is possible. Interfaith Resources—NEW BOOKS From Jewish Lights Publishing, SkyLight Paths’ Sister Imprint

CHRISTIANS & JEWS—FAITH

TO FAITH Tragic History, Promising Present, Fragile Future Rabbi James Rudin

Can Christians and Jews overcome 2,000 years as hostile strangers? For two thousand years, Christians and Jews have coexisted in an uneasy state of tension, mutual suspicion, and often hatred and violence. But in recent years, courageous Christian and Jewish leaders have together confronted the past with laserlike intensity and commenced the urgent task of building bridges of solidarity, mutual knowledge, and respect. This extraordinary effort, coming after two millennia that were frequently filled with intolerance and distrust, reverses a tragic history and creates a new and constructive relationship between Christians and Jews. But it has not been easy. How did this happen? How was it possible to begin the process of overcoming centuries of stereotypes, caricatures and bigotry? And does the development of constructive Christian-Jewish relations, albeit still fragile, offer a successful model to resolve other intergroup conflicts? This probing examination of Christian-Jewish relations looks at the major issues facing both faith traditions to guarantee that the recent hard-earned gains and achievements will not be lost or weakened in the difficult years ahead.

PREVIOUSLY ANNOUNCED—Inspiration LIVING

INTO HOPE A Call to Spiritual Action for Such a Time as This Rev. Dr. Joan Brown Campbell Foreword by Karen Armstrong

Stepping out of ourselves, beyond the walls of the church and into the thick of humanity to create beloved community.

Christianity / Spirituality 6 x 9, 144 pp (est), Hardcover 978-1-59473-283-6 $21.99 Avail. October 2010 Author’s Home Area: Cleveland, OH; Chautauqua, NY

“As people of faith, we are the people of hope.” From this inspirational premise, Rev. Campbell leaps into the underlying question: “How do we live into this hope?” Drawing on her amazing life experiences, this visionary minister speaks out on the pressing issues that face us today: renewal, reconciliation, forgiveness, love, justice and community. With a bold, distinctive voice, Campbell asserts that we have the capacity to transcend the barriers we have constructed that separate us from one another. She poses that “who is my neighbor?” may well be the most crucial question in our world where so many are hungry and hurting and weary of war. She calls us to life lived fully—not carefully or cautiously, but fully engaged with the world and with the messiness of humanity. And she dares us to act as the one people we are called and created to be—to claim our freedom to care, to risk and to step out into the unknown. The first book by Dr. Campbell, Living into Hope captures the essence of her wisdom gained from years of world travel and experience, and offers inspiration and challenge for all who would claim their lives as people of hope.

Rev. Dr. Joan Brown Campbell, former executive director of the US office of the World Council of Churches and former general secretary of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA, is director of religion at the historic Chautauqua Institution. She currently serves as chair of the Global Peace Initiative of Women and is one of the founding members of the Council of Sages for Karen Armstrong’s Charter for Compassion initiative. Dr. Campbell is a sought-after lecturer. Karen Armstrong is the bestselling author of The Case for God, among other books. A powerful voice for ecumenical understanding, she was instrumental in creating, launching and propagating the Charter for Compassion, a global, multifaith cooperative effort to restore compassionate thinking and action to the center of religious, moral and political life.

PREVIOUSLY ANNOUNCED—Islam GHAZALI ON THE PRINCIPLES OF ISLAMIC SPIRITUALITY Selections from Forty Foundations of Religion— Annotated & Explained

Translation and Annotation by Aaron Spevack, PhD

The first English-language publication of significant portions of the “Forty Foundations” of the Islamic faith, authored by one of the greatest scholars of Islam.

Religion / Islam 51⁄2 x 81⁄2, 208 pp (est), Quality PB Original 978-1-59473-284-3 $16.99 Avail. October 2010 Translator’s / Annotator’s Home Area: Boston Aaron Spevack, PhD, visiting assistant professor of Islamic studies at Hamilton College, is founder and director of the Bukhari Institute, which offers educational programs on the arts and sciences of the Islamic world. He is a frequent writer for IslamAmerica.org.

Many consider Imam Abu Hamid al-Ghazali (1058– 1111) the all-time greatest scholar of Islam. One of the great legal minds of his time, he was also one of the foremost sages of theology, philosophy and Sufism. His writings on the interrelation of law, theology and mysticism were central in establishing Sufism as a core dimension of orthodox Islamic practice. Muslim communities all across the world today still base much of their practice of Islam on Ghazali’s writings. Forty Foundations of Religion is Ghazali’s own summary of his magnum opus, The Revival of Religious Knowledge, which he described as the “very essence of the knowledge of the Qur’an.” The Foundations are a brief and powerful summary of Islamic faith, worship, law and spirituality. For all who are interested in Eastern spirituality, Sufism and interfaith dialogue, Foundations offers a concise and affordable alternative to the extensive (and expensive) translations of the original Revival of Religious Knowledge. This is the first publication of significant portions of the Foundations in English. Original translations of selected highlights are accompanied by insightful commentary that makes the core message of this great spiritual master relevant to anyone seeking a balanced understanding of Islam.

Translation and Annotation by Rabbi Rami Shapiro Foreword by Rabbi Zalman M. Schachter-Shalomi

The wisdom of Jewish spirituality and mysticism can become a companion on your spiritual journey.

Religion / Judaism 51⁄2 x 81⁄2, 240 pp, Quality PB Original 978-1-59473-275-1 $16.99 Translator’s / Annotator’s Home Area: Nashville Rabbi Rami Shapiro is an award-winning author, storyteller and essayist. He is author of The Sacred Art of Lovingkindness: Preparing to Practice; Hasidic Tales: Annotated & Explained; and The Hebrew Prophets: Selections Annotated & Explained (see p. 49 and below; all SkyLight Paths), among other books.

Tanya, “It Was Taught,” is one of the most powerful and potentially transformative books of Jewish wisdom. Written in 1797 by Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi, the founder of Chabad Hasidism, Tanya sets forth the fundamentals of Jewish spirituality and mysticism. While a focus of daily study by tens of thousands of Hasidic Jews, Tanya is little known outside the world of Jewish mysticism. Until now, its kabbalistic terms and esoteric language have made this essential text of Jewish spirituality inaccessible to most readers. In this engaging volume, Rabbi Rami Shapiro offers a contemporary English translation of key selections of Tanya coupled with commentary designed to clarify and amplify the wisdom it contains. He also outlines the philosophical and spiritual framework on which Tanya is based—God’s nonduality; the five dimensions of reality and their corresponding intelligences (body, heart, mind, soul and spirit); the purpose of sacred commandments as catalysts to God realization, and the hallowing of all life through godliness—to help you understand the selected Tanya translations in a way that enhances your own spiritual development. “Opens one of the all-time classics of Jewish spirituality for beginning students of all faiths. [It] not only unlocks Tanya but also adds a classic of [Rami’s] own to our library of personal yearning.” —Lawrence Kushner, Emanu-El Scholar, Congregation Emanu-El, San Francisco; author, Honey from the Rock: An Introduction to Jewish Mysticism and other books

SAINT AUGUSTINE

OF HIPPO Selections from Confessions and Other Essential Writings— Annotated & Explained Annotation by Joseph T. Kelley, PhD Translation from the Augustinian Heritage Institute, The Works of Saint Augustine: A Translation for the 21st Century

The restless heart and searching mind of this influential early church father can offer spiritual and intellectual companionship for your spiritual journey. Augustine of Hippo (354–430), theologian, priest and bishop, is one of the most important figures in the development of Western Christianity. He is known as much for his long interior struggle that ended with conversion and baptism at age thirty-two as for his influential teachings on human will, original sin and the theology of just war. Cherished as a model for the pursuit of a life of spiritual grace and criticized for his theory of predestination, Augustine is recognized as a living expression of the passion to understand and communicate the deeper meanings of human experience. With fresh translations drawn from Augustine’s voluminous writings and probing facing-page commentary, Augustinian scholar Joseph T. Kelley, PhD, provides insight into the mind and heart of this foundational Christian figure. Kelley illustrates how Augustine’s keen intellect, rhetorical skill and passionate faith reshaped the theological language and dogmatic debates of early Christianity. He explores the stormy religious arguments and political upheavals of the fifth century, Augustine’s controversial teachings on predestination, sexuality and marriage, and the deep undercurrents of Augustine’s spiritual quest that still inspire Christians today. “Rescues the eloquence and relevance of Saint Augustine for contemporary readers. This is a book for students, scholars—and any earnest seeker in search of a great companion.” —James Carroll, author, Practicing Catholic and Constantine’s Sword

TALKING

ABOUT GOD Exploring the Meaning of Religious Life with Kierkegaard, Buber, Tillich and Heschel Daniel F. Polish, PhD

Challenge yourself to delve into a deeper interfaith dialogue. The modern age of religion is characterized by dialogue. Jews and Christians together explore the realities and meaning of living in proximity to one another. Yet for all the good will and sincerity of intention, too often such discussions fail to progress beyond well-intentioned pleasantries to the challenging content that can truly deepen our understanding of each other. This fascinating and accessible introduction to the theologies of four modern religious thinkers will help you break through the superficial generalities to plumb the depths of religious differences and embrace the commonalities. Examining the lives and works of Søren Kierkegaard, Martin Buber, Paul Tillich and Abraham Joshua Heschel through the lens of their treatment of the Bible and the biblical patriarch Abraham, you will take part in a discussion of the very phenomenon of religion and what part it plays in living a fully engaged human life. Topics include: • The limits of human understanding and the inability of the finite human mind to comprehend God • The language with which humans can speak about God • The interpretation of religious symbols as acknowledgment of God. “A profound analysis of the forms of religion for our times. The value of this book lies in Polish’s ability to point out the value of all four authors’ works for an authentic interreligious dialogue.” —Catholic Library World

CARESHARING

A Reciprocal Approach to Caregiving and Care Receiving in the Complexities of Aging, Illness or Disability Marty Richards

Rebalancing the prescribed roles in challenging caregiving situations so all involved are supported. The word caregiver typically suggests someone doing all the giving for a frail, physically or mentally challenged, or aging person who is doing all the receiving. Marty Richards proposes a rebalanced approach of “caresharing.” From this perspective, the “cared for” and the “carer” share a deep sense of connection. Each has strengths and resources. Each can teach the other. Each can share in grief, hope, love and wisdom. Richards shows you how to move from independent caregiving to interdependent caregiving by engaging the spiritual and emotional aspects of caring for a loved one. Whether you are a daughter or son, a husband or wife, a sibling, long-term partner or good friend, Caresharing offers a multilayered, reciprocal process that will help you keep your spirit—and your loved one’s spirit—alive in challenging times. THE LOSSES

OF OUR LIVES The Sacred Gifts of Renewal in Everyday Loss Dr. Nancy Copeland-Payton

Find hope and renewal in life’s natural cycle of ordinary losses and new beginnings. Going beyond loss as a problem to be resolved, a grief to be worked through, Dr. Nancy Copeland-Payton, a spiritual director and ordained clergywoman, reframes loss from the perspective that our everyday losses help us learn what we need to handle the major losses. Weaving in spiritual and classical themes, personal and scriptural story, Dr. Copeland-Payton shows us that by becoming aware of what our lesser losses have to teach us, the larger losses of our lives become less terrifying. Each chapter includes a spiritual practice and questions for reflection to help us: • Mine the hidden depths of painful losses of things and places • Traverse the devastating loss of relationships and the heart-wrenching death of people we love • Overcome the steep, dark slopes of loss of beliefs and faith • Venture past our fear of the losses of aging and our own death. “Capture[s] beautifully the paradox that the losses of our lives can become our gains. By weaving story, experience and faith … shows how our deepest hurts may be the soil that nurtures the seeds of our transformation.” —Sr. Clarissa Goeckner, prioress, Monastery of St. Gertrude, Cottonwood, Idaho
