LONG BRANCH The Office of Community & Economic Development (OCED) remains a positive force for sustainable community and economic development despite the lackluster economy. The OCED offers diversified funding assistance toward business development, housing rehabilitation assistance, parks development, infrastructure upgrades, redevelopment assistance, senior citizen activities, youth development programs and much, much more.
“OCED projects bring people into the city, promote the economy, and save taxpayers money.�
The OCED offers the Community Development Block Grant Program, Urban Enterprise Zone Program, Long Branch Housing Rehabilitation Program, Parks Development through NJ State Green Acres Assistance as well as other services. The CDBG Program started in 1974 and has been a mainstay in the City offering financial as well as technical assistance. The Annual Taste of Long Branch

nce a year, the great chefs and bakers of Long Branch are invited to step out of their kitchens and come together for A Taste of Long Branch, the premiere food-tasting showcase held at Rooney’s Oceanfront Restaurant.
With participating restaurants and bakeries stationed around the rooms, guests are treated to an evening of culinary excellence and bountiful, unlimited tastings of signature dishes. Rooney’s cash bar is open. Tickets for this popular event are sold-out quickly, so early reservations are recommended.

The Taste of Long Branch is a night to eat, drink and be merry with a nourishing purpose of benefiting the Kay Guadagno Memorial Award & Scholarship Fund at Monmouth Medical Center. The award and scholarship fund was established to help carry on the spirit of Kathryn “Kay” Guadagno, Assistant Vice President of Community Relations/Ambulatory Services at Monmouth Medical Center, who passed away in July 2013. Kay served as a guiding force in strengthening Monmouth Medical Center’s ties with the community for over 35 years and was a very close friend of the Greater Long Branch Chamber of Commerce. he Great Iron Pier of Long Branch history is long gone, but need not be forgotten. Just go to the center of Pier Village plaza, stand at the gazebo on the promenade, and look up. The imprint of the majestic twin towers that once stood at the entrance to the Iron Pier stands tall in the current architecture. Erected in 1879, it’s fashioned after the West Pier in Brighton England, and is by far the grandest of the piers in Long Branch history. Constructed to accommodate the large steam ships of the day, a New York tourist could enjoy a round trip for 60 cents. Refreshment stands, benches, and rocking chairs were scattered along the 600ft structure built of tubular iron steel that allowed people to walk out over the water, and enjoy the pleasures of sea and sunshine. Jaeger’s Restaurant on the pier was the McLoone’s Pier House of its day. In1893, the pier was hit by a tugboat and cut in two. By 1908, what was left of the beautiful Iron Pier was torn down. Today, the Pier Village towers are a memory marker of a by-gone era, but not a forgotten dream. Plans to build a magnificent Long Branch pier that would stand the test of time can still be found on drawing tables after all these years.
