02 LOLA KLEIN - pergola A museum should be more than just a public building where the elite can admire the art. A museum should be art itself, reaching further than the select target group. Pergola contains five seperate buildings, connected by the enormous green roof construction. Those buildings have an exhibition hall for temporaty art in the centre, while the permanent collection is facing the public space. The buildings are from glass on the ground floor, so people who are passing by can get a glipse of the art that is being exhibited. The faรงade on the second floor is made out of half translucent glass, where the dynamic game of light and shadow from the green roof begins. Pergola combines a public building and the public space.

03 LOLA KLEIN - emergence

The design for the expansion of the University High school in the centre of Melbourne, Australia is based on the following three conceps: maintaining the unique green atmosphere, dramatising the edges of the building towards Royal Parade to fit into the urban context - whilst softening towards the courtyard & connecting the highrise hospital with the lowrise residential buildings on Royal Parade. In the building the functions are strictly divided into four categories: Renaissance centre, general learning centre, general / coffee & canteen, sports. Based on David Chipperfields Atrium, the functions are designed in a triangular shape, allowing the children to access every part of the building, and creating flexible study spaces.

The shape of the building could be concidered an unusual one. The roof is accessible via several points, to maintain the unique green character in the middle of the lively city of Melbourne. The title of this project: emergence, captures this concept perfectly. Emergence is a phenomenon whereby larger entities arise through interactions among smaller entities. The rising of the building, from the grass in an emergence. Programs: Sketchup, Photoshop, Indesign, Vectorworks. Grade: 8/10

04 LOLA KLEIN - eschers garden of sculptures The routing is the experience in Eschers garden of statues. The original pattern that was placed on the square in front of the Escher museum in The Hague, is used in the design for the garden. From a bird’s-eye view one can recognize the original pattern. This pattern is, pushed down, where the pattern remained in the form of ramps and balconies. The route runs around the centre piece of the collection. The visitor does not enter the garden itself, but can behold the statues from the ramp, inspired by the Guggenheim by Frank Lloyd Wright in New York. The surrounding walls are mirrors. This results in a complex and dynamic scene. An element characteristic for Eschers work. The balconies create a connection with the square. People who are not planning on visiting the museum are able to see a part of the collection from these balconies. This creates a social engagement. Programs: Rhinoceros and Grasshopper. Grade: 7/10

05 LOLA KLEIN - modelmaking studies

MODELstudies MAKING

A series of four models using different materials and techniques

STRUCTURE AND D E T A I L (left) A wall is designed with the measurements of 320 x 190 mm. One should implement the Fibonacci serie. The design is inspired on the previous design: Detail and Expression. A fragment of the previous work is chosen, which has been extended. Again, glass and steel have been chosen as materials. This creates a modern and light construction. By adding spacers between the seperate elements, the elements seem to be apart of eachother. Grade 8.5/10

DETAIL AND E X P R E S S I O N (right) A mass, a vertical and a lineair element meet in one detail. The design contains two masses, which are connectect through a glass element, consisting of smaller glass elements. The glass elements and the masses are connected through steel lineair elements. Glass and steel are the materials who create a neat, modern atmosphere. By placing the detail on a black underground, the contrast between the black and the light modern construction is exagerated. Grade 8/10

THE CUBE Students were ought to design a cube of 10 x 10 cm that is interesting from all angles and by only using three shades of grey. Grade 8/10. THE PILE Make an interesting composition by using three spacial elements: the cube, the cardboard panel, and a wooden stick. The composition should be unexpected and dynamic. Grade 8/10

06 LOLA KLEIN - drawings and sketches

&

DRAWINGS sketches A selection of drawings and sketches throughout the years.

Both sketching environments as sketching objects is displayed. I have experience with drawing objects from example, designing by sketching and sketching a space on location.

Different techniques are used: pencil, fineliner, marker. I also have experience in working with watercolour, acryl paint and the collage technique. Grades vary from 7,5 to 9/10

07 LOLA KLEIN - huidenkoperstraat Commissioned by architectural firms IM Architects and Studio Modderman a design is made for the renovation of a building at the Huidekoperstraat in Amsterdam. The building is to be the headquarters of a large cooperation in the Netherlands. A large void in the middle of the building creates a modern, bright and pure appearance. In this open space, wooden boxes are placed, where meetings can take place. Under these boxes, the hanging plants result in a green look. In the facade an incision is made in order to replace it with a glass entrance. I have done the visualisation of the project and had a minor influence in the designing process. I have indivudually created the Sketchup file, which is send to an external rendering company. Images shown on this page are the result of the rendering company based on my Sketchup file.

08 LOLA KLEIN - green, heritage & the city Green, heritage and the city is an urban design project with the focus on landscape architecture. The location is a suburban area outside of Melbourne, Australia. The location has a lot of heritage buildings and clear axes, while the landscape is very dynamic in height and waterflow. Those two very different landscape structures will be combined: the primary roads will be the historic axes with the heritage buildings as landmarks, while the secondary roads will follow the natural lines of the landscape. The area will have a green atmosphere, as there will be green façades and green public spaces. As the target group for this area is mostly families with children, there a multiple playgrounds designed thoughout the area. These will function not only as a playground for the kids, but also as the meetingpoint for neighbours and will house the social interaction of the neighbourhood.

This summer Lola Klein Douwel volunteered at our office as a trainee. We came to know her as a keen and eager young student. We never had a trainee who was looking for work experience even before starting the study. .. She worked on several projects including the renovation of an appartment in Paris, a house in Gorssel, a school in Amsterdam and student housing in Hilversum. We can recommend her to any colleague looking for an intelligent and hardworking young draughtsman or architect-to-be. Sincerely yours,
