SHOP RESIDUE

Shopping malls dominate and shape very much the urban life in Hong Kong. Huge demand for economic activities further create more and more shopping complexes, and in fact residual malls have been found all over Hong Kong.

Such residual spaces are space wasted but at the same time, they represent a desire and opportunity to change.

The project aimed to investigate the problems and the opportunities of these malls through design approach.

Riviera Plaza, a mall which has been emptied for 20 years, has been selected as a role model of how residual malls could be transformed and revived to survive and give alternatives to the economic-activities-dominating society. The project explored the possbililty of seeing malls as community living room through art. The practice has been using a lot in small neighborhood and it is hoped through art, exploration and interactions could be found intriguing again.

LION PAVILION This project was kick-started for Hong Kong Young Architects and Designers Competition: a temporary pavilion for the West Kowloon Nursery Park. The concept of Lion Pavilion is originated from the Hong Kong spirit – Lion Rock. which our team believe, is a concept that for WKCD, the to-be cultural apex of Hong Kong should never miss. In terms of functions, we hope the pavilion could serve as shelter for the open space and provide comfortable seating for users. The Lion Pavilion is formed by concrete ploygon rings and the lion silhouette shaped creates the sheltered space. Concrete rings are designed to include seatings on both sides and the combination of the rings allows differentiation of sunlight. Lion Pavilion is positioned towards pacific, symbolizing hope and faith in Hong Kong’s future.

THE BRIDGING PROJECT To Kwa Wan Kowloon City Road has it own unique urbanscape with the East Kowloon Corridor bridging over their daily community space. The wet market underneath is the vibrant hub where it creates and should create the community. The project aimed to redesign the community space through 1) Improvement on unpleasant walking experience, 2) Introducing food waste management system for better hygiene and 3) Upgrade of the community hub and open space, etc. It is hoped that through redesigning spaces under corridor, the Kowloon City Road community could be bridged with more comfortable environment.

RUBBISH STATION

This car park is mainly for vehicles, but still many vehicles are parked along the road due to insufficient parking space, causing the roads even narrower.

The rubbish station is surprisingly clean. Ironically, there are many trashes and junks along the road of the wet market area.

This car park is owned by the community centre, only members of the Hong Kong Jockey Club have the key to access and use this car park.

Rubbish

Wet market is one of the symbols of To Kwa Wan, and there is an agglomeration along the space under the flyover. However, they create a lot of junks which leads to road blockage.

OPEN SPACE

The layout of East Kowloon Way Flyover Rest Garden. The main activity of this space is gambling, which creates a stressed atmosphere to newcomers. The environment is indecent as it is surrounded by trashes and railings, and the sittings are separated.

Food waste and leftovers are created from the street market.

The food waste converter is stored in each shop.

The food waste is converted into fertilizer through the food waster converter.

Take PARK in Art is a series of art intervention co-organised

by Art Promotion Office and Hong Kong Public Space Initiative based on the project Seats Together.

Being as one of the co-curators, our team hold 5 events at 5 different parks in Hong Kong nurturing interactions between art, community and public space. Memstory at Kowloon Tsai Park and Morse Park co- and re-created the fading community and story through posting, story-sharing and co-performance by the young and elder generations. Inspired by Checkerboard Bench and Can Elderly be the Park Designer? with their respect to Checkerboard history and co-creation within community, Memstory would like to re-present all the above values at the perfect community space – Park.

| Kowloon Tsai Park

Planes skimming low, with the guidance of Checkerboard hill – this picture reminisced the ironic history of Kowloon City. We used to hear the sound of airplanes flying across the clear blue sky. However, this experience is no longer available because of the demolition of Kai Tak airport and the disappearance of the Kowloon Walled City.

How can we keep this collective memory alive?

An installation was installed in the park as a station for story collection and drama script co-creation. The co-creation of the script transform the memories shared by kaifongs into a story that belongs to the community, and cherishes the community’s history. Posting and story co-creation were hoped to re-establish the fading neighborhood.

Co-Umbrella is committed to promoting sustainability with Sharing Economy concept.

We believe “Sharing” prevents unnecessary consumption, and thus excessive production and wastage. Co-Umbrella shares umbrellas in community to promote above concept in the form of “Recycle, Reuse and Share”. We aim to avoid sudden consumption of umbrellas from unexpected rain. We strongly believe that “Sharing” reflects also the spirit of mutual assistance and can even bridge up our community.

Co-Umbrella sharing system was first trialed at 5 spots of Chung Chi College, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. 40 collected umbrellas were repaired and shared. Recycled plastic materials are used to make umbrella badge in order to avoid using excessive materials.

Umbrella donation was also opened to university students to enlarge the sharing circle, any more importantly, promote the sharing culture.

Co-Umbrella was invited by Chung Chi College to circulate over 140 umbrellas in college area.

Those were umbrellas produced in previous Chung Chi Anniversary but would not like to be delivered in official ways. Co-Umbrella developed over 20 spots covering the whole Chung Chi College for this 2nd trial. The trial lasted for over 1 year. Very few of them are still circulating within the campus even for now.

2019

Launching Aberdeen!

Collaborating with Teenage Warehouse, Co-Umbrella kick-started its very first community project outside The Chinese University of Hong Kong at Aberdeen.

With the help from production house and makers at Teenage Warehouse, technological advancement for umbrella tracking is foreseeable. Community engagement is also further explored. Partnering with umbrella expert, Mr. Joseph Kam, umbrella repair workshops are held for Aberdeen community.

It is hoped that broken umbrellas could be revamped through community power. In fact, at Makerday, the first few smart umbrella stand protoypes were tested and workshops for umbrella badges were held to engage more involvement from community in promoting sharing-economy!

City Reflection Hong Kong, 2017

Reflective facade is the metropolis’ signature. Modern life under these giant blocks are filled with interactions. Supressed personalities underly deeeply and ambiguously beneath reactions. People are sometimes like mirror, like reflection.
