Colon Cleansing Equals Improved Health!

If you are willing to spend the time to exercise and invest in your personal hygiene and your appearance, it should be just as important to make sure that you are healthy on the inside of your body. Appearances mean a lot to some, but they can never measure up to the value that you get from cleansing your body on the inside. Your colon is used for eliminating wastes from the food that you ingest. It is vital to keep your colon clean and functioning properly. After a healthy, preservative free diet, colon cleansing is the best thing that you can do for your colon. The benefits far out weigh the costs when you consider the health benefits that you derive from colon cleansing.

There are many concerns regarding the preservatives and toxins that surround us in today’s environment. Toxic substances are not only found in the household cleaners that we use daily. But they are also found in our children’s toys and the biggest culprit of all, in our food. Let’s examine some of the preservatives that we can find in our food

1. Propyl Gallate, prevent fats and oils from spoiling and is often used in conjunction with BHA and BHT. Propyl gallate prevents oxidation, so it is used as a preservative in vegetable oil, meat products, potato sticks, chicken soup base and even in chewing gum. Though it is not designated as a carcinogen, it does have many adverse side effects in some people, which include skin irritation, and 1

allergic reactions that constrict breathing. It also can cause extra skin sensitivity. People who have asthma, an allergy to aspirin, or liver or kidney problems, should avoid propyl gallate as much as possible. 2. BHA and BHT – Both BHA and BHT protect fats from oxidation, which is damage due to exposure of the fats to oxygen. In fact, they work in a similar way as does vitamin E. BHA and BHT are often added to potato chips, dry breakfast cereals, enriched rice, and foods containing animal fats and shortening.

BHA and BHT might just be contributing to the upsurge in ADHD and ADD that is sweeping through the nation’s children, because BHT and BHA are known to cause hyperactivity in children. By avoiding foods containing these unnecessary preservatives, parents can help reduce their children’s hyperactivity levels, without the use of drugs.

In addition to causing hyperactivity in children, BHT and BHA are considered carcinogens by the United States Department of Health and Human Services and still the FDA allows them to be used in foods. There is something terribly wrong here, so the wise choice is to avoid BHA and BHT whenever you can.

3. Heptyl Paraben -This preservative is used in beer and non-carbonated soft drinks. Studies show that this additive, which is rarely used, is safe. Unfortunately in regards to its use with alcoholic beverages, it has never been


tested with alcohol. Once again government bureaucracies just aren’t doing the jobs that we think they are.

4. Sodium Nitrite (Sodium Nitrate) - Nitrates are used in curing and preserving foods, mainly meat and fish. The process of curing involves the use of salt, sugar, or some form of dehydration. In each case, the goal is to make the food unattractive to the bacteria that cause food spoilage. This controls bacteria because the are tiny organisms that require moisture, oxygen and food in order to survive. Take away any one of these things and they die.

Are Nitrates and Nitrites carcinogenic? The debate rages on, but here are a few facts on this topic. Roughly 25 years ago, some researchers raised the possibility that nitrites could be linked to cancer in laboratory rats. This suggestion received a lot of media attention. What received less media attention, was when it turned out that they were wrong. Indeed, the National Academy of Sciences, the American Cancer Society and the National Research Council all agree that there’s no cancer risk from consuming sodium nitrite.

5. Sodium Benzoate (aka Benzoic Acid) - is commonly used in fruit juice, carbonated drinks and pickles to help prevent the growth of microorganisms in these acidic foods. This preservative has been known to cause anaphylactic reactions, which are severe allergic reactions, in sensitive individuals, and may also adversely affect the behavior of children diagnosed with ADHD. When taken with vitamin C, they combine and form benzene which is carcinogenic especially when combined with high heat. 3

6. Sulfites (Sulfur Dioxide, Sodium bisulfite) - Sulphites, also known as sulfites, are naturally occurring compounds that are used as preservatives in foods such as dried fruits and vegetables, sausages, some deli meats, and condiments. Sulphites are used as food preservatives to maintain food color, prolong shelf life, prevent microorganism growth, as an additives in certain medications and to bleach food starches.

There are many people that can ingest sulfites without any adverse reaction. However, some people, including asthmatics and those with aspirin allergies, may have severe reactions to sulfites, including swelling of the throat, hives, or even death. Other symptoms include headaches, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), behavioral disturbances, rashes, drops in blood pressure and loss of consciousness. Sulfites have also been linked to the destruction of vitamin B-1 in the body.

7. Ultra Pasteurization - This term refers to a type of high-temperature processing that gives milk and dairy products an extended shelf life of up to 50 days. This process may damage the fragile components of milk, for instance flattening milk proteins so that enzymes can no longer help break them down.

How These Preservatives Effect You


We live in a “Fast Food” society. Try as we might to eat healthy, there are many occasions when we simply have to eat on the run. Even when we do our own cooking, most of us do not check the label to see what preservatives are in the foods that we eat. Take a simple food such as noodles. Scientific studies show that the waxy material that coats the noodles contains a carcinogenic substance, so it is not even safe to consume noodles on a regular basis. Over time the toxins that we consume will build up in our bodies and in our colon in particular. These toxic materials can cause food allergies, irritable bowel syndrome, and even cancer.

Colon cleansing offers the inside of the body the chance to rejuvenate itself and restore it optimum functionality. Keeping in mind that the colon’s main function is to absorb water and electrolytes, so it is important that you use the correct colon cleansing agents in order to keep the colon functioning at peak performance. Some laxatives can cause dehydration, scaly skin and rashes. All of these symptoms are signs that the colon ios not functioning properly.

Common Colon Cleansing Procedures

1. The Enema - One way to fully cleanse the colon is with colonic irrigation. This is accomplished by washing out the contents of the large intestine by flushing it with water. Sometimes the enema can contain a mild form of cleansing soap, or medications designed to treat specific problems that the patient has in the colon. During the course of the enema, fluid is passed into the colon via a tube inserted into the anus. An “evacuant enema” uses soap or olive oil to remove the built up feces. In a “therapeutic enema” drugs, usually corticosteroids, 5

are mixed with the solution that is inserted into the colon, in most cases, for the treatment of proctocolitis. 2. Colonoscopy - A colonoscopy is a medical procedure for examining the interior of the entire colon and rectum using a flexible illuminated fiber optic or video camera. The colonoscope is introduce through the anus and guided up the colon by a combination of visual and X-ray controls. It is possible to obtain specimens for microscopic examination using flexible forceps passed through the colonoscope and to remove polyps using a diathermy snare. This procedure is performed under a doctor’s supervision while under local sedation.

3. Natural Therapy - Natural therapy uses psyllium husks, flax seeds, slippery elm and natural herbs. You can find these products in most health food stores. The advantage of using natural products is that they they are time tested and most people will not have adverse reactions to their use. In rare cases, people do develop side effects from their use, so if you have any concerns, be sure you consult your physician before you start your regimen of treatment with natural products. Natural therapy takes a little time for the herbs or foods to produce the desired results. As a result, in this “I want it now culture!”, some people will become impatient with the process. 4. Manufactured Method – This treatment combines natural herbs, with medicines and in some cases with synthetic chemicals. These different remedies can provide excellent results. The main drawback here are the amount of products that are on the market and the amount of time it takes for you to sift through the claims to find the right treatment at a reasonable price. 6

5. Hydrotherapy – Hydrocolon cleansing or colon hydrotherapy is a technique which involves the removal of mucus waste accumulated in the colon by literally flushing it with water. The colonic irrigation is invasive, but does produces the quickest results. I guess it all depends on what you are willing to put up with in order to get the cleansing done quickly.

Once you determine the procedure that you want to use for your colon cleansing, it is important to remember that you need to maintain your clean colon after the procedure is completed. Eating natural foods that do not contain preservatives, losing weight and getting regular physical exercise are essential factors in your post cleansing activities that will keep your colon healthy and performing at its best.
