PATIOS, TERRACES & ROOFGARDENS

Patios, Terraces & Roofgardens Francesc Zamora The outdoor spaces are often referred to as intermediate, given that they are neither interior nor fully exterior; situated within an architectural framework, they are carefully planned and incorporate structural elements, a defined layout, and a series of accessories that can include anything from plants to furnishings. Designed to function as additional living spaces, they should provide the qualities necessary to fulfill this purpose, such as adequate lighting and ventilation, comfortable furnishings, attractive views, and a logical relationship with the interior. In this way, exteriorareas must create the sense of security and comfort associated with being indoors. The use of structural elements and accessories that are commonly foundinside a home can create this feeling of enclosure and containment. This is filled with images of patios, terraces and roofgardens around the world that illustrate the many ways you can enhance your own outdoor space and integrate it within your home.

The Ultimate Guide to Wood Francesc Zamora This volume presents descriptions of over 100 species trees and bushes from all parts of the globe. It also explores their utility as a renewable resource, prized for the ease with which it can be worked, its strength, versatility, and above all its beauty. The physical features of different types of wood underlie their structural characteristics, while their mechanical properties and availability have made wood a natural material for building all sorts of goods including structures, furniture, tools, vehicles and decorative items.

The loft concept has been evolving since it originated as an architectural style in the fifties and has come to represent an aesthetic trend and lifestyle associated with freedom. As a result, airy, open and light interiors have made their way into large cities and have become an important part of our homes. Among the projects presented here you will find a variety of examples; historical lofts, apartments with large useful surface areas, and houses, where architects and interior designers have successfully overcome spatial constraints to incorporate the characteristic spaciousness and functionality of lofts. Fans of lofts will find an inexhaustible source of inspiration and ideas for their homes in this book.

Houses. Residential Architecture Alejandra Muùoz Solano There is almost nothing that compares to feeling comfortable in one’s own home. Since the time when the nomads started to settle down, the house has been a reflection of those who live in it and shows the personal taste and lifestyle of its occupants.

The building was designed to accommodate acts of state, congresses, conferences and cultural events. The architects’ main task was to give a contemporary form to the interior, which will incorporate elements of the traditional Uzbek architecture. The exterior combines classical elements with a modern glass façade. 150 Best Minimalist Interior Ideas Do you wish you had a simple, sophisticated, soothing home? If so, a minimalist style might be just what you are looking for. A minimalist home strives for order and harmony in the relationship between spaces and the objects that they contain. The boundaries between interior and exterior are blurred. From an aesthetic viewpoint, the free-flowing spaces suggest the disposition of positive and negative, and the transformation of architectural forms into synthetic shapes enhanced by the visual power of light and color. One inevitably thinks of white when discussing minimalist architecture and interior design. The use of such a limited color palette responds to the same need to reduce everything to a bare minimum for its powerful effect.

Passive strategies derived from the bioclimatic design of a home are those that consume less and, therefore, are most beneficial to the environment. Mainly, they consist of achieving a high degree of thermal insulation, they take advantage of the orientation of the building and the greenhouse effect as a source of heat in winter, and they facilitate cross-ventilation to cool the space in summer.

The Passivhaus certification is an European seal originally from Germany and Austria, which summarizes the main premises for a bioclimatic profile house: - high level of isolation and reduction of thermal bridges - high levels of solar gain - good air quality inside the home, using a mechanical ventilation system with heat recovery - excellent level of airtightness

Heat-energy combined cycles are dual systems that produce electricity and heat and reduce energy consumption by 25 %. As they are domestic systems, electricity is consumed where it is produced, thus there is little loss due to transfer. These combined cycle devices are designed to operate during the day and release a consistent low heat, and the cost is recouped in three to four years. Their price ranges between 540 and 1,083 euros. A standard model can produce approximately 2,400 kWh of electricity per year and approximately 18,000 kWh of heat.

1. Heat exchangers 2. Auxiliary burner 3. Combustion fan 4. Balanced flue 5. Stirling engine and alternator

If the aforementioned points are complied with, the housing virtually requires no additional system of heating or cooling generated by active strategies which, as we have seen, consume higher levels of energy. If you require any auxiliary systems, install an integrated system for heat, hot water and ventilation. Finally, if you live in Europe (latitude between 40° and 60°) the following energy limits are set: - The total demand for energy for heating and cooling should not exceed 15 kWh/m per year. - The total primary energy for appliances, water heating and climate control must be less than 120 kWh/m year.

Waste that can be used to make compost

HOMEMADE COMPOST

HOW TO SAVE WATER

decomposes many more things, such as paper and cardboard, teabags, coffee dregs and biodegradable nappies. Homemade compost is a high quality organic fertilizer that is far better than chemical fertilizers, which are more aggressive for the environment and harmful to health.

Every day large quantities of waste are thrown away, and this could be easily reused or recycled at home. This is the case for organic or biodegradable waste, which can be used to make compost. It is mainly kitchen waste (such as leftovers from fruit and vegetables) and from the garden (such as cuttings, earth or dry leaves). However, organic fertilizer

regulations, even in Mediterranean countries where this resource is scarce. A system for collecting rainwater should be planned in the design phase, as it requires the installation of a separate collection network for the bath, shower and sink drainpipes.

Drinking water is only guaranteed for 67 % of the world population and some 20 % do not even have access to this resource. However, the use of rainwater or greywater purification (washing machine, kitchen and shower) is not covered in any construction

The installation price is between 2,150 and 3,250 euros, and the payback period, depending on the price of water in each country is 10-15 years. Water savings can amount to 30-45 %.

The image shows a rainwater tank by Graf, which collects and stores rain water that can be used for the toilet, washing machine and to water the garden. If the house has a roof garden, this garden stores between 50 % and 90 % of the rainwater that will gradually yield to evapotranspiration, while the remainder could be collected to be reused. The diagram represents the rainwater collection system; the picture in the next page shows the collection room for this water.

The diagram shows the greywater separation network for Kyoto House by Pich-Aguilera Arquitectos, from the washing machine, shower and sink.

Making homemade compost is not complicated. There are composters on the market that are affordable and very easy to use. In large gardens, they can be used in a shaded corner. In this case, you just have to remember to stir it around at least once at month.

Hansgrohe sells Pontos AquaCycle systems, which processes greywater from the shower and bath through a mechanical and biological process in which clean water is produced that can be reused for the toilet, laundry, household cleaning or watering the garden. This system will halve the consumption of drinking water but it needs to be separated from the sewage network, which is the toilet water that is sent directly to the sewer. The simplest system (AquaCycle 900) is composed of three 80-gallon tanks. After a pre-filtration process, water is subjected to a double biological treatment and then to a UV disinfection. The energy consumption is 1 or 2 kW per cubic meter. The result is recycled clear water that meets the EU directive on bathing water.

The German company Graf sells composters such as the 70-gallon Eco Composter, with a wide opening for easy filling and a removable cover. It is made with recycled polyethylene. The compost is removed through the small front door or by lifting the composter.

IBIZA SURPRISING ARCHITECTURE 1.0 PHOTOGRAPHS CONRAD WHITE

THE UPDATE

Ibiza Surprising Architecture 1.0 Photography by Conrad White Texts Francesc Zamora An insider’s view of the surprising dream-houses to be found on Ibiza, which demonstrate the enormous variety of architectural styles on this Mediterranean island.

TEXTS FRANCESC ZAMORA MOLA

Ibiza has been always an island with a unique identity and a special allure. Even now, Ibiza has never lost any of its magic; the curiosity of the world is still enchanted by the island. From an architectural point of view, a myriad variety of styles is to be found all over the island; authentic Ibicencan style, Norwegian style, Mexican style, Arabian style, Greek style... you name it.

76 // Can Martín

This house stands on a property that spreads over 15,000 m and consists of embankments on farmland oriented northwest-southeast. Surrounded by Mediterranean pine forests and olive, orange, almond and carob trees, the house spreads out on two floors for a total of 450 m not including a service basement and the exterior spaces such as terraces and a pool. The ground floor includes a living area, a kitchen, guestrooms and a guest bathroom, while the upper floor is reserved for the master bedroom. The house takes on modern design features with generous spaces and large openings, which ensure an intimate connection to the spectacular surroundings, while letting natural light and air in. A cool and calm ambiance is achieved through a selection of materials that is limited to concrete, glass, metal and the neutral colors of white, gray and black. In all, the Ibizan proportions of the house, its simple materials, its lack of ostentation, and the eclectic modern touches that give it an inviting atmosphere, are the reason why this house does not go unnoticed and has become a landmark of adaptation to the characteristic landscape of the island.

76

The main theme of this book is to give the reader an insider’s view of the surprising dream houses to be found on Ibiza.

The Sourcebook of Signage Graphics Julia Schonlau A detailed look at cutting-edge vector based sign and wayfinding designs from top creators and sites around the world. Most of the sign graphics is vector based. Vector images are composed of curves, lines and points, and therefore can be easily re-sized and enhanced to produce a superior quality and much smoother graphics. They allow you to spin, stretch, mirror, tilt and shift the base points to create sophisticated creations and designs, which is absolutely essential for creating usable sign graphics. That’s the reason why most designers use vector graphics programs to produce signage.

Softcover 192 pages 19 x 24.5 cm 9.2 x 9.2 in Spring 2014

1000 CUTE CHARACTERS

Julia Schonlau Most of us are not even aware of the extent to which our world is being populated by characters. They are everywhere—trying to sell us cornflakes, leading us through a computer game, entertaining us in a movie... They even surprise us in an art gallery. This book takes an in depth look at commercial and personal contemporary character design. For a commercial purpose characters can have a huge advantage over real people: they are more adaptable, and often easier to apply to different media. Some designers invent characters out of a personal interest and these characters often mirror the personality of their creator. Whether they are grotesque and sinister or cute and loveable—great characters move us because we recognize something human in them. But most of all they are lots of fun! 8

INTRODUCTION: SID SHANTI

That first trip to Ibiza changed my life.

I have been captivated by food and cooking for as long as I can remember. My earliest memory is of taking ingredients for an English breakfast into primary school to cook for a class lesson. I had the blessing of my teacher but the scorn of my brother - we were in different years and he liked my breakfasts! Cooking is not just my greatest passion, but also my vocation. My career really began when I started work at the famous London media haunt, the Groucho Club, where I completed a three-year apprenticeship. At the same time, in the early 1990s, I was studying the theory and practice of classical French cuisine at Westminster College. Even before this I had gained wide experience of the hospitality sector, ranging from the Royal Box at Headingley cricket ground to more mundane breakfast responsibilities at some of London’s grand hotels. At the Groucho I worked steadily through the kitchen until I became Chef de Partie on sauces and roasts. It was a satisfying stable position. That stability was cut short by my hobby. Ironically, a hobby that became my career until I settled on Ibiza! My first big trip abroad had been to Goa in India in 1990. Inspired by its free-party scene, on my return to the UK, I began spending my free time and money organising events and buying records. Soon my hobby took over my life. I was recognised as one of the leading DJs in the then hugely popular and exciting Goa trance movement which was spreading across Europe and Asia, particularly Britain and Japan. I was fortunate to be able to deejay on every continent and almost every major city in the world during a short career spanning about eight years. One of the perks of touring was that I was invited to eat at the most noted restaurants everywhere I played. These experiences kept alive my passion for food and cooking as I held down residencies in London and Tokyo, ran my own monthly night at Brixton nightclub The Fridge, produced records and released mix CDs on various labels. It was my career as a DJ that first brought me to Ibiza in 1998. Mike and Claire invited me to play Manumission, the biggest party at the world’s largest nightclub, Privilege. I was there on the recommendation of “Mr Nice”, Howard Marks, who had been a friend of mine since I invited him to play music in the back room of my party at The Fridge. Howard was narrating the infamous Manumission film along with broadcaster Chris Needs and Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh.

From Ibiza Spotlight.

Hardcover 296 pages 25.5 x 19 cm 10 x 7.4 in Available

I went back to London, finished my DJ commitments and packed my essentials: knives, chef’s whites, records and Technics 1210s. Then I moved to the island for good. In my first year, 1999, I set up the roof terrace Shanti Town, at the Manumission Motel, a true den of iniquity. It was a roaring success. Every Monday we would feed up to a 1000 hungry clubbers using nothing more than a barbecue made from an old bath and the wire base of a single bed frame. Running this revived my passion for cooking and for a couple of years the twin arts of music and food overlapped, especially when I took over the kitchens of the old Blues Bar in the port of Ibiza and the Manumission Diner was born. At the same time as running these more public ventures I also began to cater private villa parties for clients such as Jade Jagger and Dan Macmillan. This work soon extended to cover yachts, fashion shoots, music videos and promotional events with corporate sponsors like Orange and Vodafone. Meanwhile, my passion for the sort of music I was expected to play as a DJ had begun to wane. Trance had morphed into a different genre and it no longer excited me. I decided to give up deejaying and return to my first love of cooking. My last professional DJ commitment was for Heineken in 2001, headlining a five-week tour of Guangdong province in China. Back in Ibiza, in 2004, I was able fulfill a long-held ambition and opened a restaurant. I set up, managed and part-owned El Faraon, a restaurant of over 100 covers serving modern European food. I was responsible for all aspects of the day-today running of the business. It was a new venture and within twelve months it was receiving plaudits: on the island Pacha Mag ran a feature in June 2005, while America’s Food & Wine magazine described El Faraon as a “top five Ibiza restaurant” (July 2006) The restaurant was sold as a going concern in 2007. Since then I have focused on the multifaceted challenges of private catering. Over the years this has given me the good fortune to cook for many notable individuals including: Jools and Jamie Oliver; Puff Daddy, Sir Tom Hunter, Sister Sledge, Mark and Margy Fenwick, Bryan Ferry, Skin, Peter Crouch, Christian Audigier, Kelly Hoppen, Thandie Newton and Oliver Parker, Ozwald Boateng, Bruce Parry, Dynamo, Chris Gorman OBE, Chuck Bone, Tracy “Cat Daddy” Mills, Bruce Parry and Jaime Winstone. Some testimonials from these satisfied clients can be seen elsewhere in the book

10

These one-off events bring together, and benefit from, the skills i’ve honed in the music and food industries. I also continue with private catering as a personal chef for a number of clients and when requested I produce bespoke dinner or lunch gatherings. To give you an idea of what it is like to run and coordinate something like this, I worked with a camera crew to create a video diary and you can see the 30-minute film here:

http://vimeo.com/16245769

For the last two years I have been privileged to be the private chef for Carolina & Pete Tong and their wonderful family. Given my long standing passion for food and music, this has been more than a pleasure. The juxtaposition made me feel it was time for me to put pen to paper and write a book. 11

GRILLED ASPARAGUS, PATA NEGRA HAM CRISP, CONFIT RAFF TOMATO

ESPÁRRAGOS A LA PARRILLA CON CRUJIENTE DE JAMÓN DE PATA NEGRA Y TOMATE RAF CONFITADO

SERVES: 4

PARA4 PERSONAS

The crunch of the asparagus, and intense flavour of the Pata Negra ham crisp collide together with the sweet texture of the confit Raff tomato in this dish. If you can’t find Raff, which are intensely sweet, use buffalo tomatoes.

Ingredients 20 x Asparagus spears 8 x slices of Pata Negra ham 2 x Raff tomatoes Extra virgin olive oil Salt and pepper

Ingredientes 20 espárragos enteros 8 rodajas de jamón de pata negra 2 tomates raf Aceite de oliva virgen extra Sal y pimienta

Method Preheat the oven to 180ºC. Prepare your Pata Negra ham crisps and confit tomato as described in the accompaniment section, then set aside. Snap or cut the base of the asparagus stems until no connecting tough fiber remains. Rub them in olive oil and season. Heat a griddle or frying pan for 2 minutes on a medium to high heat. Cook and turn the asparagus for 2-3 minutes. Serve as shown as soon as the asparagus is cooked.

Create Your Own Gothic Steampunk Character Enthusiasts of gothic and steampunk will find all the inspiration they were looking for in this guide. Jorge Balaguer presents 25 characters typified by common elements in both trends, from the taste for Victorian aesthetics, mystery, romanticism, to literary references in science fiction and fantasy, among others.

Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction that typically features steam-powered machinery, especially in a setting inspired by industrialized Western civilization during the 19th century. Steampunk works are often set in, in a post-apocalyptic future during which steam power has regained mainstream use, or in a fantasy world that similarly employs steam power. Steampunk perhaps most recognizably features anachronistic technologies or retro-futuristic inventions as people in the 19th century might have envisioned them, and is likewise rooted in the era’s perspective on fashion, culture, architectural style, and art.

The drawing process takes place in just four steps: from the preliminary pencil sketches in black and white to the final full color artwork. Each step is accompanied by simple instructions and tips so that any amateur can get the tools and technical expertise needed to draw like a professional illustrator. Characters Gothic Steampunk Guy, Girl, Soldier, Hunter, Horse and Rider, Train Driver, Aviator, Space Soldier, Victorian Lord, Outlaw, Pirate, Swordsman, Mercenary, Robot, Warrior, Marshal, Vampire, Detective (Sleepy Hollow inspired), Mechanical, Vampire Girl, Witch, Scuba Diver, Medieval Knight, Fairy, Vehicle Inventor

The term steampunk’s first known appearance was in 1987, though it now retroactively refers to many works of fiction created even as far back as the 1950s or 1960s.

Softcover 384 pages 22 x 34 cm 8.6 x 9.4 in

Steampunk also refers to any of the artistic styles, clothing fashions, or subcultures, that have developed from the aesthetics of steampunk fiction, Victorian-era fiction, art nouveau design, and films from the mid20th century. Various modern utilitarian objects have been modded by individual artisans into a pseudoVictorian mechanical steampunk style, and a number of visual and musical artists have been described as steampunk.

Metal Heads. Heavy Metal & Hardcore Graphics A selection of the most innovative metal and hardcore graphic design of recent decades in all their various subgenres and creative areas. Metalheads, enthusiasts of apocalyptic songs, of a dark and experimental scene, will find in this volume a compilation of graphic elements from this musical genre that reinvents itself every day to survive. It has nothing to do with T-shirts, posters on adolescents’ walls, or nostalgic 70’s vinyl collections. Rather, it is about radical aesthetic works of artists, designers and illustrators, open to the influence from other artistic fields. They have crossed the boundaries of genres, into territories that are unexplored, complex and full of nuances.
