Dear friends of Loesje! Loesje goes international also in November. She travelled a lot in this month and made lot of poster actions and text writing workshops in Berlin, in Latvia, in Belgium and in the Netherlands. However she continues her journey to Warsaw to spread the streets there also with her messages in December. Loesje is taking part in some very exciting projects about LOVE: CONFLICT: IMAGINATION. She got inspired about the friendy competition of Memefest and decided to help organising the Oddstream Festival in Nijmegen. She is very happy to introduce you her new friend Katja Lindens and her new officemates the HALMA crew in Berlin. To bring some summer breeze into your winter dreams you can also read about some adventures in Ecotopia. Loesje prepared many posters for you in November. We hope you get inspired and stick some Xmas presents on your streets! Yours international Loesje from Berlin

November is my favorite month of the year. It’s not only my birthday, and birthdays of friends of mine, but also Loesje’s. So many reasons to celebrate and have parties! For Loesje’s birthday I’m preparing an exhibition, showing what we have exhibited here at Loesje’s Imagination the last 5 years and a photo compilation. Since we are also celebrating Loesje 20 years in Germany and 5 years in Berlin! Me and Petra are also giving two workshops aimed at discrimination to a group at the Humboldt University, and exhibiting these posters at the University the next day. I’m also writing a speech for the party, cleaning the office and helping with the promotion. For the rest I’m doing finances, EVS evaluations and distribution of books. Rola. Doing, done: + Sweden called, so I was there for one week. Very cool! + Planning Loesje’s birthday party. Safaa. In December I'll be working amongst my usual duties on the, promised in the last number, “Internet Issue” of our bulletin. Hopefully you'll find it a nice starter into 2011. For my delay-excuse I only can mention that unfortunately in November almost all of us here in the international office were quite often away. So we needed to handle everything in a bit limited presence of the others and thereof lack of time for some planned extras. Maybe for the "Entschuldigung" to those who were waiting for it, we'll be able to show you our new shop, where heaps of new cool gadgets with Loesje texts will be available at moderated prices. Some are outstanding and original present ideas 4 ideal for any occasion. Artur.

Finally got the feeling that I can get rid of my herniated vertebral disc. November busy as usual, many text writing workshops, poster action at the Humboldt University against discriminative advertisements and celebrating Loesje's birthdays. The life in Berlin still adventurous, although -20°C sounds a little scary. Petra.

Hranush is having a busy time the last months of her EVS, preparing for kick starting Loesje Armenia once she gets back, going on trainings and investigating possibilities for the future. Ghost writer Rola.

LOESJE AL INTERNATION BERLIN Hello! This month I am spending my time running around. Lots of things to do but fun! I was on the STREAM IT! training for the past 10 days, where 40 people from 6 countries came together to do workshops and have discussions about media and communication. This week I am going to Amsterdam with Julia Vernesson to give a talk on International design specifically talking about the Masta Magazine and the recent Loesje book 'What borders do you cross to be free'. I will then be home in Scotland for 4 days and then it's December already!! NOOOOOOOOO!! Tara.

Hi there people from all over the world! As the newest board member of Loesje International, here is a little introduction of myself. Loesje and I go a long way back. Because of my interest in language, writing and organising I did my work experience for my study Cultural and Social Development at the Dutch Loesje office in Arnhem. That was in 1996/1997. A year that changed my life in many ways, it was such a new and free way of thinking, I loved it! I met people from everywhere in Holland and other countries, experienced that there are many ways to think and act and gave many text writing workshops, especially with school kids. A year later I was asked to go to Linköping, Sweden to work there as a volunteer of the International Loesjeoffice. And so I did. An interesting year followed. I discovered that it was more difficult then expected to settle myself in a country where they spoke another language. All together it turned out to be an interesting, educational, funny, friendly, fascinating year.

Loesje has a new board member

After that I wasn’t that active for a while. I always did read her bulletins and the posters, of course. A while ago a lot of Loesje-things came back in my life. Giving writing workshops, meeting Loesje people from the past, visiting the Dutch Loesje-office. And.. the question if I would like to become the new board member of Loesje International. Not the easiest task, with all the things going on at this moment. But I’m looking forward to help the Dutch girl, which I learned so much from, to stay alive and kicking outside the Netherlands! In all these countries where people are also awakened by her. What I’m doing with the rest if my time: a few months ago I started my own company (www.katyo.net ). I’m organising & coordinating (festivals, workshop days, voluntary coordinator), write & edit (web)texts, support little companies with their social media and everything else that comes my way and I’d like to do. All in the field of art & culture, human and society. Have a nice day! Katja Linders, Nijmegen, Holland

October – it's been a good month! Loesje has been sticking posters in her hometown again, has done loads of writing and is enjoying the colourful leaves of autumn. Texts about work, the new anti-squatting law, flirting, the government, neighbours and travelling have been written. The people of the Dutch office are very busy with giving workshops, for example at mosques, city halls and youth centers.

And there's more news: the Dutch office is going to move to another district of the city! We're looking forward to settle ourselves in that new neighbourhood, where there are more crowded streets and a lot of multicultural shops. As an add-on, we're even going to start a small shop to sell products and stuff and thereby giving people a better chance to get to know about Loesje and her activities. Summarized, there are a lot of things going on at our

Furthermore, we organized the annual ‘bosjesweekend’ where plenty of members and friends of Loesje got together, had interesting discussions, writing sessions and were up for some action. We created street art out of old newspapers and magazines and spread them in the city. Since the streets are really up to some creative and mind-tickling decorations, now that the days seem to get greyer and are kind of affected by a wintery dull, we were all motivated to change something about it! Of course, also a nice party evening with the theme 'hippie or ’psychedelic' cheered up the whole crowd and brought new and old Loesje people together again. 6

place, inside as well as outside of the office. Therefore also in ourselves. It’s all good, ‘cause having a flexible mind oneself is one of the basic requirements to create an open-minded outer world, right? So see you around, and if you catch a glimpse of some energetic, poster-sticking girl on the streets, don't hesitate in joining her for a good time ;) Susanne

Netherlands – our actions

We're more than very happy to inform you about 4 open text writing workshops in Polish and English in November (14th, 21st and 28th Nov) and December (5th Dec) in Warsaw. All of them take place in Praga district that is considered one of the fastest changing areas in Warsaw – as to culture, art and local society – so we expect also some local topics at the workshops.

Autumn news from Warsaw

By mid December we'll also have a new website and new series of postcards, thanks to the support of the municipality of Warsaw, that provided a small grant for our activities. Moreover, we'll have two workshops with teachers, working in schools. We cooperate with them on an educational project, that involves topics like intercultural education and dialogue. So – five local workshops for Loesje's birthday! Welcome!

Are you sorting rubbish? Do you prefer bike instead of car? Maybe you are vegetarian already? All those steps help to decrease carbon dioxide (CO2) emission level and shows that you care about the future of our planet. But a lot of people and politicians are still acting that it doesn’t concern them and they have some reserve planet where they can go. To show that we all should start to think and act, there was a worldwide campaign on the 10th of October called the „Global work party”. People in 188 countries showed what they can do in decreasing CO2 emission level. Loesje Latvia was taking part in „Global work party” with text writing workshops in three Latvian cities – Liepaja, Riga and Ventspils. The workshop in Liepaja was a part of our Loesje posters writing and photographing project „White and Black Revolution” and was the 20th city action of this project. This was the 3rd city action already in Liepaja and we can be sure that Loesje is there for a long time as our activists from this beautiful sea-side city is full of ideas of how to bring Loesje to city inhabitants. In the capital city – Riga workshop was taking part in the new-born bike cafe „MIIT”. As well as in the Liepaja, workshop ended with future plans that were fulfilled in the next week – second meeting with the same working group and lay outing Loesje posters with the greatest texts from creative writing workshop.

8

After writing new Loesje texts in the Ventspils creative writing workshop, the day was concluded with spontaneous poster spreading action in the city. The next morning a lot of local people were wondering who Loesje is; speaking to them about climate changes from posters in bus stops and walls. On the „Global work party” there were 7347 events taken out in the whole world, putting climate changes in the agenda and the importance of decreasing CO2 emission level in the world. But only one day full with good initiatives anyway is not enough for changing our climate situation to right way again – it is important that every member of society to understand that it is his or her responsibility to be green. Some tips for where to start, check the web page of the campaign - www.350.org. Here is one tip already – take a look around in your city and find a place where you could plant a tree when spring will come. Eduards Loesje Latvia

festival for participation, communication and multimedia

WANTED Independent European Music and art-installations Oddstream is a communication and multimedia festival where the participation of the visitor and the interaction with the location of the festival plays an important role. It will take place between the 31st of May and 5th of June 2011 at the Vasim (a former factory) in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. Loesje and Masta are co-coordinators of this event, together with PINA and Memefest from Slovenia. We use the word participation as opposite of passivity and indifference. Oddstream brings and shows inspirational examples of participation from the arts, culture, communication and media together, let the visitors participate in the festival and doesn’t avoid the debate. The theme of the first edition of Oddstream is: love and conflict. For this festival we are searching for independent European Music and art-installations that fit the theme of the festival. For music suggestions please email to music@oddstream.org including a link to the music. For suggestions related to art-installations email to exhibition@oddstream.org with information and images of the work. Deadline is 15th of December 2011. Thanks! the Oddstream - team www.oddstream.org

New members Loesje is doing well in Belgium. Since summercamp we have some new active members that support Loesje each in their own way (e.g. sticking posters, promoting our workshops at their school, coming to Dutch members’ weekends dressed up as a hippie etc) And at the Dutch Loesje office we have a Belgian EVS’er (Kaat). So with me, that makes two Belgians at the Dutch office. Enough to have some influence and secretly add Belgian topics to the papers we write on :)

DO YOU HAVE A PLAN FOR PEACE

Loesje Belgium New series As a result we made a thematic poster series on the Belgian political deadend street situation. Since the elections on June 13th we still don’t have a new federal government. And before that we also had a temporary government and numerous governments have fallen the last couple of years. Actually, I’m not even able anymore to give you a clear overview of what happened, because it’s too much. Too much talks, too little action. In the last elections the Flemish (Dutchspeaking part of Belgium) voted massively for a Flemish nationalist party. Which of course doesn’t really help to form a federal government in which both the French-speaking Wallonians and the Flemish have to cooperate and govern the country. So instead, nothing really happens, except for endless talking and arguing about more regional independence and language regulations.

Loesje Belgium No Border camp From 25 September-3 October activists from different countries camped in the centre of Brussels for a week to protest against immigration procedures in the EU. They prepared and did actions and demonstrations in the streets of Brussels and they organized and followed different workshops. Also Loesje gave a text-writing workshop. These are the posters that were made there. You can also download them from loesje.org/ posterarchive (select ‘Belgium’) Plans In November we plan to have a first online text writing workshop through Skype. And on the 28th of November we’ll have a real old fashioned text writing session in Ghent in the afternoon. So possibly, you’ll find more Belgian posters in the next bulletin. We also brainstormed about organizing a wakeup call for the Belgian people because they seem to have gotten numb from all the non-politics in their country. And we dream of making a Belgian Loesje book to reach more Belgians.

Ecotopia 2010 During three weeks in August, an ever changing group of people made up a camp in Wiesenburg in Brandenburg, just a bit more than an hour train ride southeast of Berlin. As the name suggests Ecotopia is about an ecological utopia, but one that can be lived here and now, together. At the camp it meant that we recycled waste, cooked vegetarian food, made decisions through consensus and created the program ourselves. Ecotopia offered an open space for workshops, film screenings and performances on environmental, social, political and other issues, whatever connected in the widest sense to ecology. The event was meant for people of all ages, and at the end there really were people from the age 0 to 80 at the camp, and for one day a big group of pensioners, sightseeing. Everywhere there were also children of different ages running around, the older ones had their own program and the younger ones their own sand pit. Also some friends of Loesje had found their way to the camp, mainly not knowing about each other going there. On one of the sunny days, a small group gathered at a table to write Loesje texts. There was another table full of posters and books, where some people stopped by, or then they joined us to listen to the stories of the warming up. We had also kids that drew pictures and wrote in their own language. Even if there was a lot of coming and going, the concentration of the core writing group kept to the end, thanks to the calm and relaxed atmosphere of the whole camp.

and some visiting friends of Loesje The month of August was the rainiest one, since the beginning of weather registration in 1901, with precipitation of nearly 157 l/m. It didn’t take down the mood of the people that arrived to the camp, but probably because of the rain a lot of people didn’t come, even if they registered to the camp. This left a gap in the budget, as extra food was ordered and tents and compost toilets bought, but the arranging team will ask the town if they can make Ecotopia 2011 in the same place and hope for better weather and a bigger camp to get the remaining costs covered. I totally recommend making a visit to Ecotopia. It’s possible to stay for anything between one day and three weeks, and even longer if you want to help building or dismantling the camp. The participants pay for their stay in Eco’s a camp currency which is calculated according to income. You can have your own tent or camper, or sleep in a common tent on a camp bed, a warm sleeping bag or a quilt is good to bring. And good shoes, I had really bad ones and had to dry them at the campfire every night; usually they were wet again when I got to the tent. You don’t see the water puddles in the dark! Oh, those summer memories //Maria, who made seed balls and new friends, learned joggling tricks and new things, and especially liked the food and just being and the biking and the swimming and giving workshops and the fireplace. Ps: Check ecotopia2010.org or the facebook group with the same name.

OUR NEW OFFICEMATES

HALMA crew The European Network of literary centres HALMA connects literary centres of Europe, organizes intercultural exchange and allows actors of literary life – authors, translators, promoters – to experience the variety of different cultures.

We are very happy that HALMA moved in with Loesje. I really like the creative, friendly and relaxed atmosphere in the office and hope that we might be able to work on a common project together with the Loesje team.

The Halma network creates alterable structures which promote dialogue and exchange between European regions. Within a framework of cooperations, events, and scholarships, Halma creates a forum for transnational encounter.

This year HALMA was busy with the organization the mobility grants program. Altogether, thirty HALMA writers travelled all over Europe this year. We have received travel stories and poems from writers and you can read them in the library on our website.

As in the game "Halma" (Greek: jump) the network provides ideal opportunities to move from one European house to another in order to work, to research or to realize projects, since literature and culture have developed a deep and sustainable connection in many places. 16 literary centres in Central and Eastern Europe have founded the network. An enlargement, particularly towards Western Europe, has already begun. Currently HALMA represents 26 literary institutions.

16

We are also planning two projects for next year: On the 100th birthday of the Polish writer and Nobel Prize winner Czeslaw Milosz we ask authors from ten countries to write Letters to Milosz and comment on cultural values in Europe. In September 2011 we will then start the project “Literature in flux” and travel with a boat full of writers along the Danube from Bulgaria to Austria.
