You hold in your hand the third edition of the MADE IN catalogue. In 2011, it was released for the first time at the ISPA congress in Toronto. We developed the MADE IN SWEDEN catalogue as a communication tool for artists and presenters based in Sweden who wanted to increase their visibility and business operations internationally. It was such a success that in 2012 we opened it up to the other Nordic countries. MADE IN the Nordic Countries was born. In 2012, we distributed the catalogue to more than 6,500 presenters and international practitioners in North America, Asia and Europe. We use delegate bags as a distribution channel at various performing arts fairs, markets and major network meetings around the world. This year, you will also be able to acquire it from our website, www.locoworld.se. The format and the simple but straightforward information provided in the directory fill a need for those who want to know more about the performing arts in the Nordic countries. The MADE IN directory gives you overall knowledge of what is currently available and what is going on at the moment. The catalogue is produced annually, and the information in it is as fresh as can be. The catalogue is funded by the artists and institutions presented in it. The presentation is therefore based on the motivation of the artists themselves to find new markets and work internationally. We guarantee their international commitment.

News this year is that we have the pleasure of getting the views and reflections on the topic Why Nordic? from three prominent and experienced presenters: Alicia Adams, The Kennedy Center, Washington, staging one of the biggest presentations of performing arts and culture from the Nordic countries ever, The Nordic Cool Festival; Samme Raeymaekers, December Dance, who has put together an interesting festival on contemporary dance in Bruges and AndrĂŠ Theriault, independent Curator and former co-director of the Tanz Im August Festival in Berlin, with many Nordic acts on its programme over the years. February 19 - March 17 2013, The Kennedy Center presents Nordic Cool, an international festival of theater, dance, music, visual arts, literature, design, cuisine, and film from the Nordic countries as well as Greenland, the Faroe and Åland Islands. – Why are you presenting artists from the Nordic countries? The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts is the national center for the performing arts located in Washington, DC. The Kennedy Center has a long history of presenting international festivals that represent and reflect the diverse heritage and culture of the people of the United States. Over the decades since the Center’s inception we have presented the world’s greatest artists and companies in festivals highlighting the cultures of France, Germany, the UK, China, Japan, Australia, Central Europe, the Arab countries, India etc. These festivals include all of the performing arts plus other disciplines—the visual arts, film, literature, and the culinary arts. We have looked around the world and became interested in focusing on northern Europe because it was a part of the world that we had not focused a major festival. So, Nordic Cool 2013 is a curated festival that was announced in March 2012 and will take place February 19 - March 17, 2013. It will include approximately 700 artists from the five Nordic countries, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Iceland and Greenland, Faroe Islands and Aland Islands. – How did you discover Nordic performing arts? I discovered Nordic performing arts to a greater extent when I began to research for the Nordic Cool 2013 festival. Of course, I had seen many of the Nordic artists that appear on the international performing arts circuit in America and around the world. But, by traveling specifically to the Nordic countries many times to see performances, meet with artists, companies and cultural agencies I was able to discover many more

– Why do you think the Nordic performing arts works for your country? I think that the Nordic performing arts embody many of the values that are exemplified by this region of the world—nature, environment, innovation, children, gender equality, technology etc. These universal values are extremely important to the world and are expressed distinctly in the work of the artists from these countries. The Nordic voice is unique and important; one that for which the people of the United States have great appreciation.

performers that would substantially increase the pool of talent for me to draw on for Nordic Cool 2013. As the curator of the festival I have been very pleased with the extraordinary work that I have seen.

SAMME RAEYMAEKERS Programme director, December Dance, International Dance Festival, Bruges – Why are you presenting artists from the Nordic countries? First of all because I feel and think that during the last ten years this performing arts scene is becoming very interesting and internationally renowned. It’s tempting to shift all dance artists from the northern climes into one easy stereotype. The trouble is, while the clichés of Dionysian passions are tempered by cool, Apollonian reason – such a dichotomy fails to embrace the diversity and distinction of what each choreographer, company or collective actually creates. One thing is sure, it’s a very innovative and thrilling scene. Every year I organise an international Dance festival: December Dance. Every uneven year I invite a choreographer, he or she is then the curator of that edition of the festival (Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, Akram Khan, Wim Vandekeybus…). 7

Every even year I focus on a country or region. Therefore I decided to focus this year (2012) on the dance scene of the Nordic countries: Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden and Denmark: December Dance 12: Nordic Waves. – How did you discover Nordic performing arts? The last few years I tried to see as much as possible. Several festivals such as the first editions of the Swedish performing arts platform (show-off.se in Stockholm) and Full Moon Dance festival in Pyhäjärvi, Finland and others gave me the possibility and opportunity to see a huge amount of performances from the Nordic countries. Since a few years there is the Ice Hot platform, unfortunately always at the same time as my own festival. So in 2012 I decided to make my own Ice Hot in Bruges. ;-) – Why do you think the Nordic performing arts works for your country? People here like to open their minds for new input. New dance scenes. They like to be surprised and astonished. And they will be by the musicality of Tero Saarinen, the quirky rhythms and playful humour of Jyrki Karttunen, the aesthetics of Kenneth Kvarnström, the grandeur and the renewal-urgency of the Cullberg Ballet and Göteborgsoperans Danskompani, the sensual theatrical accuracy of Ina Christel Johannessen, the dark, daring and monstrously beautiful kinetic poetry of Erna Ómarsdóttir, the maturity of Kitt Johnson, the hypnotic roughness of Carte Blanche.. And of course all the new upcoming emerging artists, the young generation... All these artists make this region a wonderful performing arts scene. One we want to discover over and over …

Independent dance curator, co-director Tanz im August Berlin from 1998 - 2012. – Why are you presenting artists from the Nordic countries? The reason for presenting any work is because of its potential for moving an audience – emotionally, kinesthetically and intellectually. It has not been difficult for me in the past few years to discover a number of choreographic works coming from Nordic Countries with this quality. The most interesting ones are, in my view, those where the so-called cliché elements of Nordic dance such as the steady presence of Nature or the overwhelming sound of Silence are incorporated into works created for an informed international audience. Also, a radical understatement type of humor which makes us smile real big rather than laugh out loud is another unique characteristic of a number of Nordic productions one could see in the last season. Although these elements are not reserved to Nordic countries alone, the way of mixing them in a stage work might be. And it’s great to witness this as an audience member.

ANDRE THERIAULT

– How did you discover Nordic performing arts? To truly be able to appreciate Nordic dance, I think one must experience it live, preferably in a northern city with a local audience. This has been my path to discovery, made somewhat easy by the short distances separating Berlin from most of the northern capitals. This is also a unique privilege which dance curators have – a travel budget. It’s simply nice to see where the audience laughs and you don’t, remains attentive while you jitter in your seat, and where there is consensus in the reaction. The specificity of a cultural context in which work is created is thus highlighted. My first big exposure to Nordic dance was during a dance platform in Stockholm several years ago. The Nordwind festival in Berlin and Hamburg is also an important window. – Why do you think the Nordic performing arts works for your country? Why do such stage productions “work” in Germany, in Berlin ? Well the truth of the matter is that they don’t always “work”. When things “work” it’s not because they are from Iceland or Finland, it’s because it’s good work. It’s that simple. If work transports us intellectually or emotionally, a spectator won’t bother with reminding herself that this product is from a northern country. The focus of attention will be on the experience, won’t it ? 9

PERFORMING ARTS ICELAND Performing Arts Iceland, PAI, is the umbrella organization of all main players in Icelandic performing arts. PAI’s aims for international activities are: •

Promote the work of Icelandic artists on the international scene

Stimulate knowledge amongst Icelandic artists about the international market

PAI is a member of ICEHOT - Nordic dance platform, IETM and ITI as well as working with other partners in the Nordic countries. PAI website is the main portal on Icelandic performing arts, companies and productions. Performing Arts Hub Norway is a network organisation mainly focusing on the independent performing arts sector in Norway. PAHN is a national competence and information centre, supporting and promoting the performing arts both nationally and internationally. The organisation offers service and information to its members, local and national government, and civil societies. One of our core activities is local, national and international advocacy work focusing on the independent performing arts field. PAHN is also the distributor of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs travel fund that supports exchanges in the performing arts, as well as coordinating international exchange projects. Norwegian artists are receiving more and more international attention. PAHN is working to strengthen their ability to operate on the international arena. We work closely with the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Norwegian Arts Council to create conditions to handle the demand for Norwegian performing arts. PAHN also engages in international networks to ensure an ongoing flow of communication and information.

AABEN DANS Through the body, Aaben Dans tells the story about being human. In an ongoing investigation of the possibilities and the expression of dance, Aaben Dans works in combinations of sound, images, music, movement and words. The performances are directed to audiences of all age groups – from infants to adults. Artistic director and choreographer Thomas Eisenhardt works closely with the prize-winning director Catherine Poher. Aaben Dans is a regional dance theatre in Roskilde Municipality, Denmark. The theatre produces two new performances every year: one for young audiences and one for adults. Most of the performances tour both nationally and internationally. Local work is closely connected to international work, for example in the biannual: SWOP – International Dance Festival for Children and Young People.

ASTERIONS HUS | THE ASTEROID FESTIVAL Asterions Hus has toured Danish theatres, schools and culture houses for some years, forming a very popular attraction for young theatre audiences in Denmark. Artistic director Peter Kirk has developed a very expressive theatre language â&#x20AC;&#x201C; between the realistic and the grotesque, comedy and tragedy, text and extreme physicality.

In recent years, Asterions Hus has ventured into more mature performances for adults and has extended to outdoor performances too. They have their own space and laboratory on the harbour front in Copenhagen and are increasingly touring internationally â&#x20AC;&#x201C; where they are ready to perform in English, German and French. Touring has so far been to: Norway, Holland, Germany, England, Scotland, Turkey, Cyprus, Italy, Korea, Egypt & Canada. HMF BRÆNDENDE KÆRLIGHED Brændende Kærlighed (Burning Love) has been one of Denmark’s foremost street theatre groups for more than 25 years. Their non-verbal style of acting appeals to all ages and walks of life. They have conquered the streets from Moscow to New York with their comical and physical expression. They insist on producing stories on universal and topical themes. Their performances always reflect human foolishness in a recognisable and caring manner.

I FEEL GOOD – a pungent comedy about goodness. A small plane from Feel Good Airlines has made an emergency landing and out of the wreck climbs three characters: the handsome captain, the lovely stewardess and a most annoying passenger. What happens when you hit the ground and are struck by pure goodness? I FEEL GOOD is a poetic and edgy love story told in Brændende Kærlighed’s physical and comical theatrical style. No words but a lot of gibberish. The show is sponsored by the Danish Arts Council.

CANTABILE 2 Cantabile 2 is an international performance theatre based in Vordingborg, Denmark, under the artistic direction of Italian Nullo Facchini. The company has established itself as one of the most important Scandinavian performance theatres on the basis of its extraordinarily vivid visual language, often combining poetic and humorous features in unique, sensual imagery. Cantabile 2 has its main focus on the creation of human specific performances, which deals with the universal sensitivity of humans as emotional beings and relates to the spectators as individuals and not as a mass. Cantabile 2 creates its performances to suit specific buildings, events, festivals etc. and on various scales and budgets â&#x20AC;&#x201C; often as co-productions. Cantabile 2 also organises the theatre festival Waves, which gathers performance and street theatre companies from around the world in Vordingborg. The Waves Festival takes place the last week of August every other year.

C:NTACT C:NTACT is an independent organisation dedicated to ethnic, socio-cultural integration, based at the Betty Nansen Theatre in Copenhagen. C:NTACT’s aim is to professionalise personal stories, enabling non-actors to present them on stage. This simple yet effective method creates a profound identification and understanding between performers and audiences. C:NTACT’s touring group, Taskforce, consists of young people with different ethnic, social and cultural backgrounds, who tour all over Denmark and abroad to tell their personal stories. The performances are always concluded with a debate between the performers and audience on the topics presented during the show. C:NTACT offers different workshops, where we professionalise any given target group’s personal stories/ experiences and present them on stage. C:NTACT also works internationally, co-creating major projects with local partners in, for example, Palestine, Jordan, Malawi, Latvia and Greenland. 22

DANSEHALLERNE Dansehallerne is a large centre and venue for contemporary dance. You will find the main department of Dansehallerne in the setting of Carlsbergâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s old mineral water bottling factory in Copenhagen, and a small department located in Jutland. Uniquely, Dansehallerne gathers all the main players and areas in the field of contemporary dance. Dansehallerne has at its disposal two stages and a smaller informal foyer stage. DET ANDET TEATER | THE OTHER THEATRE An independent theatre, founded in 2004 by director and dramaturg Barbara Simonsen, its experimental productions ranging from erotic audiodrama in art cinemas to the international music-performance Fermata, co-produced with Roy Hart Theatre (FR). Fermata is the story of artist Charlotte Salomon and voice teacher Alfred Wolfsohn, who developed their creative vision in the shadow of Nazi Germany. Danish reviews called the show “a beautiful experience. Sweets for the soul, the eye, and the ear. A voyage through the life work of two people that is beautifully and harmoniously unfolded through Simonsen’s sensitive and visually focused staging. … A beautifully orchestrated visualisation of a series of Salomon’s paintings.”

Flying Pigs is an ensemble of seven Danish artists who dare to dream, think and create the impossible: if pigs could fly, this is what they would make for the stage. GAZART Gazart, led by choreographer Tali Rázga, creates critically acclaimed dance performances for a wide audience, from toddlers to teenagers and adults. Gazart’s performances for teenagers and adults embody current topics of everyday life – what we’re all talking about, but don’t quite grasp in an intellectual sense: issues ranging from war to love or gender. When creating performances for toddlers, Gazart convincingly reflects their marvel at the simple, but magical – like drops of water or crystals of snow. CARL KNIF COMPANY In an age of throwaway art and sleek production thinking, we find something that stands out. Dancer and choreographer Carl Knif is more than just personal, he is singular, almost peculiar; his art does not resemble that of anyone else. Helsinki Dance Company works in connection with Helsinki City Theatre, a large repertory theatre. HDC is the biggest contemporary dance company in Finland. Since it was founded in 1973, the company has been directed by Jorma Uotinen, Carolyn Carlson, Marjo Kuusela, Nigel Charnock and Kenneth Kvarnström among others. The company’s excellent reputation is due to its multitalented dancers as well as the works of prominent choreographers. NINA AIRAKSINEN DANCE PRODUCTIONS produces freelance-based international contemporary dance productions in Turku, Finland. Björn Säfsten deals with how our understanding of signs and symbols in gestures can be questioned by transformations. He does so through small-scale and larger creations for stage and through alternative concepts of choreography for various different contexts. Today, he runs Säfsten Produktion and is also creating commissions for other companies. His well-known ability, in close collaboration with his performers, to create an aura of a total, intense presence mixed with a precise movement vocabulary has garnered much attention. BOXES (on categorising; order, chaos) is a collaboration with composer Daniel Nelson and the Nordic Chamber Orchestra on stage during 2013/2014. Cullberg Ballet has performed around the world and is an important element in the international presentation of Swedish culture. The company also engages in national outreach through its tours in Sweden. The company collaborates with a variety of national and international choreographers and performing artists who create works for both large and small stages. Cullberg Ballet’s activities encompass projects and productions, including sitespecific appearances and collaboration with dance training programmes. Anna Grip is the company’s artistic director. Cullberg Ballet was founded by Birgit Cullberg in 1967 under the auspices of Riksteatern, Sweden’s national touring theatre. The company currently has 16 dancers from nearly as many countries. DANSSTATIONEN Dansstationen is Sweden’s biggest free venue for contemporary dance, and more! Dansstationen (the Dance Station) reaches out to 25,000 people each year with dance. Our goal is to show contemporary dance for all ages, based on questions about body, gender, sexuality, identity and other themes that contemporary dance art deals with. Since 2004, Dansstationen has resided in the heart of Malmö at the Palladium, a unique venue for dance and music. Our work comprises three elements: guest performances at the Palladium in Malmö, the Touring Company which co-produces and tours for a young audience, and the SALTO! Festival which stages dance for young people in the region, where around half of the school children have seen one of our dance performances since 1996. We are also part of the European FTE network for a young audience and the Aerowaves network to promote young choreographers in Europe. Our co-production, “Made in Sweden”, has been staged in eight Nordic cities.

DORTE OLESEN Danish-born choreographer Dorte Olesen’s creative genius can be expressed in one, single statement – she breaks all the rules. She stages productions that cause friction and challenge established ideas. By literally poking them in the eye, Olesen provokes the audience to think again, regardless of whether they do it from anger or delight. She has created many outstanding works, among them Ful Flicka (2004), Pudel (2005) and the large scale performance Women Chopping (2007), which has been performed in Stockholm(SE), Berlin(DE), Malmö(SE) and Nancy(FR). She has also choreographed for the Royal Dramatic Theatre, Stockholms Stadsteater and Göteborgs Stadsteater among others.

Trip the Light Fantastic is a dance company that produces the work of Ingrid Rosborg. Ingrid is a performer with a background in visual arts and Kung Fu. Her work is visual poetry in which movements, shapes, and gestures combine with outside apparatus to create metaphoric images. Her work strongly emphasises the body in motion. Each movement phrase is a research in its own right. Ingrid is consciously working with the body in relation to time and space and she is intrigued by the absurdity of the unexpected shift of focus between the body and the psyche. “I AM” is touring throughout 2013 “A poetic fusion of my two occupations; dancer and construction worker” A 25-minute solo in which Ingrid takes her occupation as a tiler onto the stage. An intense piece with strong imagery created by the contrast of delicate movement work and the powerful presence of a drill-hammer.

Jeanette Langert has been called one of Sweden’s most intriguing choreographers, while the press has praised her unique, idiomatic style. Her uncompromising attitude has expanded the boundaries of dance. Langert’s minimalist approach both moves and startles her audiences. Among her choreographic achievements are the highly acclaimed fuktig (2011), Julie3 (2010) – which was commissioned by The Göteborg Ballet – inuti (2009), Fröken (2008) and MERA MERA (2006). The solo work, Kopplad, premieres in December 2012 and in spring 2013 Langert will choreograph for the Royal Swedish Ballet in Stockholm. LENA JOSEFSSON & KOMPANI RAANDE-VO Lena Josefsson is considered to be one of Sweden’s most high-profiled, unique and innovative choreographers. From the Zaire of her childhood, she possesses an incomparable sense of rhythm and music. In 1988, she founded her own company, Kompani RaandeVo, which has since gained an astounding reputation for high-quality pieces and frequent touring in Europe, Africa & South America. The company is based in Örebro, where the most recent piece, RISKZON III “this is not Disneyland”, premiered. Throughout her career, Lena Josefsson has always managed to bring something new to the dance scene while maintaining her originality. Critics have said that without Lena’s shift of perspective, Swedish dance life would be much gloomier. Lena Josefsson was awarded the first Cullberg Prize ever and the Thalia Statuette. 152

MALIN HELLKVIST SELLÉN Malin Hellkvist Sellén is one of Sweden’s most questioning and intriguing choreographers, with pieces and projects for both adults and children on her resume. Often referring to her work as physical reflections on a specific theme or topic, she alternates between solo performances and larger group pieces. Her choreography is as clearly political and philosophical as sensuous, physical and emotional. Hellkvist Sellén examines choreography as a corporeal and linguistic practice. Among her latest work is ”Pink promises”, a solo for Marianne Kjaserund deriving from examinations of certain modes of social dancing and bodies politic. In 2010 Hellkvist staged ”Within reasonable limits”, a piece that emanated from an open public call for non-professional and professional dancers. 2012 she presents a new project with long-time collaborator Minna Elif Wendin. 154

Marika Hedemyr is a Swedish choreographer of contemporary dance. She creates dance theatre for stages and public locations, averaging of one or two productions per year. Minna Krook is one of Sweden’s most well established choreographers of dance performances for children. She created the first dance performance in Sweden for babies, “Oh, Hello Baby”, for which the company received much acclaim. NorrlandsOperan Dance is one of the strongest platforms for contemporary dance in the Nordic countries. They present and co-produce national and international work. Over 25 productions a year are staged at their venues. The audience in Umeå has had the privilege to see new original work come to life from some of the most renowned Nordic choreographers such as Ina Christel Johannessen, Kenneth Kvarnström and Jo Stromgren as well as international ones like Akram Kahn, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Michael Keegan-Dolan under the leadership of Annelie Gardell, Director of the Dance Department. PHILIPPE BLANCHARD Philippe Blanchard has created both independent and commissioned performances at the forefront of Swedish contemporary dance for the past fifteen years, his works developing into installation-like studies of human behaviour and relationships. Suggesting rather than telling, Blanchard’s finely layered pieces address the creative potential of each viewer by making room for interpretation, uncertainty and wonder while consistently providing subtle details to rely on. His latest production ”How About You?” focuses on the search for oneself in the other. Performed by two identical twins, the piece unfolds as a journey through images of intimacy, rejection, celebration, and loss. The next creation – a new collaboration with the team behind ”How About You?” – will explore the subject of appearances and the elusive aspects of identity. ”How About You?” is touring throughout the 2013 season, while the new production is expected to premiere in the autumn. 162

Hailed by the Swedish press early in his career as ”one of our greatest choreographic talents”, and with over 30 successful creations for institutions such as the Beijing Dance Theatre, Le Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève, the Royal Danish Ballet in Copenhagen and the Royal Swedish Ballet in Stockholm, he has now proved them right. Pontus Lidberg works with a narrative form of dance theatre. He often involves contemporary music and his collaborations with composer David Lang have been especially acclaimed. Pontus Lidberg is also a prominent film director. In 2013 a major collaboration between his own company Pontus Lidberg Dance and NorrlandsOperan will premiere his version of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring.

QUARTO is a Swedish/Brazilian duo founded in 2003 by the director Leandro Zappala and choreographer Anna Mesquita. They invest in a long-term research within interdisciplinary art, deeply rooted in the interaction between theory and practice, together with artists and researchers. Engaged in philosophical questions regarding power relations and the body, they seek to generate thought and subjectivity through a radical experience of the body and imagery. Their latest performance, BEAUTY OF ACCIDENT, challenges the following questions: What happens to the body when dealing with a 500m rope? How can movement originate from the object? How to return subjectivity to the object, once this is lost in order for it to serve a logical use? How can the object be redefined? What is an object? What types of forces do these bodies evoke? Regionteater Väst is a touring theatre and dance company for children and young people in the region of Västra Götaland, which includes 49 municipalities in the west of Sweden. Due to this extensive area, we are one of the largest touring institutions in the west of Sweden as well as one of the largest producers of performing art for children and young people throughout the whole of Sweden. We have two production venues, one in Borås where dance is produced and one in Uddevalla for theatre. Skånes Dansteater is Sweden’s largest independent dance company, a contemporary dance repertory ensemble presenting works by Swedish and international choreographers. During the past 15 years, Skånes Dansteater has presented relevant and engaging performing art to a wide audience. From grand scale performances on northern Europe’s largest stage involving orchestra and choir to small scale, intimate face-to-face site-specific performances. The company consists of 16 dancers from 10 countries. Teater Sláva is a singing, running, travelling and teaching company. Choral singing in harmony conveys the heart and soul of Sláva developed over the course of fifteen years. But Sláva is also a high-energy physical presence on stage. Devised work is rooted in powerful body-voice training in the ensemble tradition of European total theatre, producing performances that are visually striking and poetic.
