he events come thick and fast once you hit June, but with the tropical weather and lack of rain the challenge increases as we now have hard ground to cope with as well as the extreme heat, which is affecting both horses and riders. Evie and Alfie who’ve both got a lot of blood in them don’t struggle as much in the heat and I was rewarded with both horses being placed in the top six at BCA. Rackham followed, an event I hadn’t been to before but was told how lovely it was as it was ‘right next door to Coobelands’ at Pulborough. Luckily I went on from Hickstead to walk the course the night before and it took us an hour to find once we’d got to Coombelands! Worth the trip but definitely not next door to Coobelands. Buzz was in the money again coming fifth in the BE90. But I failed to get placed with Alf mainly due to our 8 faults show jumping where he spooked at a quad riding past the arena. We headed to Eridge next, a fairly local event, in a stunning setting. The main question at Eridge is the terrain, maybe the hilliest event there is. They’d done an amazing job on the ground which was like sponge to walk on and no one minded paying the extra £2 on the start fee. The time is notoriously hard to make, I managed to squeeze inside last year on Evie, using her racehorse assets. However, this year, despite ‘pedal to the metal’ all the way round Alf still came home with six time faults. I’m currently in the lorry on the way to Tweseldown with Alf. Buzz was also meant to go but with temperatures scorching to 32 degrees we thought it was kinder to leave the Cobnemara at home. He appared very annoyed at this and bounced the whole way round out hacking with mother! Tomorrow I leave for Ardingly with two horses for a week of training, socialising and possibly drinking with other horse mad under 25s. After last year when there was an incident involving Vodka and blue flashing lights, spirits have been banned. Oli just phoned me up boasting about his supplies of Sambuca. Keen not to break any rules he then began to explain to be that Sambuca is not a sprit but an after dinner liquor and therefore not banned...
