2017 was a successful year with so many events organised. Highlights included our garden party at the hospital, quiz nights at the Ritz, party night and music night at the Oaktree, as well as our Christmas music concert. We also purchased many items during 2017, the slit lamp and the scoop stretcher being the latest additions. Over the year we had help from other organisations. We had an offer to work with the Hornby Exhibition Group resulting in us receiving a donation from them, The Masons in Burnham arranged for the War Memorial to be upgraded for us. However, the biggest surprise came from Burnham & Berrow Golf Club, Captains - Peter Amos and Jane Moreton nominated the Friends to be their major charity for 2017. Throughout the year they ran many fundraising events including a full day charity tournament in the summer which ‘The Friends’ were invited to (we sold items to raise additional funds for the hospital). Another initiative was to place our collection buckets in various bunkers on the golf course and anyone landing in the bunker had to put a £1 in! There were also raffles and a silent auction. Peter and Jane presented a cheque for £9600, a truly outstanding amount of money for the Friends to use on projects within the hospital. We were amazed at the generosity of the people and golf members within the club who have donated and for all the hard work that was put in by Peter and Jane on our behalf. If you would like to support the ‘Friends of Burnham Hospital’ or become a member, then you can contact Bernard on 01278 785727 or 07856 213289.

Parkinson’s Support Group Monday 12th February The Parkinson’s Support Group meets on the second Monday of the month at the Catholic Church, Burnham from 2pm - 4pm. The group can offer friendship, advice, information and social activity. At our next meeting on February 12th, Lisa Dollery will be talking to us about her seated Pilates class, demonstrating how easy and beneficial this type of exercise can be. Some of our members already attend and can recommend it. If you enjoy singing, then our sea-shanty group is for you - we need more voices! Don’t worry if you are not a great singer, just be prepared to have fun! The sessions are on alternate Tuesdays. Contact Carole for more info on 782428. Hope to see members old and new at our next meeting. If you are thinking of coming along for the first time, please feel free to get in touch first on any of the contact numbers: Christine Manners 783696; Malcolm Conyers 01934 740282; Kim Lewis 787022.

February Flower Frenzy Tuesday 13th February The club ended 2017 on a high with a wonderful demonstration by the talented international demonstrator, broadcaster and TV judge, Jonathan Moseley at The Princess Theatre. We had a nearly full house and it is believed everyone that attended really enjoyed it; the floral displays were ‘out of this world’ and a few people were lucky to go home with them as raffle prizes. 2018 brings changes to the Club; we are moving to the Catholic Church Hall on the second Tuesday of the month. This venue has ample parking at the rear of the building which should make things easier for everyone, so you have no reason not to come! Our first demonstration for this year is on 13th February when Ashley Stockton from Taunton will delight us with his flowers and chat depicting ‘February Frenzy’. The demonstration commences at 7.30pm but arrive a bit earlier to enjoy a complimentary tea/coffee and a biscuit beforehand. New members will be most welcome; the fee for the year is £37, visitors are welcome for a £6.50 charge, and the flowers are raffled at the end of the evening. If you come as a visitor and decide to become a member, your visitor fees will be refunded. It is hoped you will come and join us, as it’s a very pleasurable and informative evening at the Burnham Evening Flower Group.
