Easter is a time of change... ... a time when we remember a last supper, the ending of a life and a resurrection. It’s also a time to contemplate our passage through life. And a wonderful place to do this is one of our beautiful churches where you will be given a warm welcome at this special time. Whatever anybody says about Blackpool, there’s truly nowhere like it in the world. I should know, I’ve lived here all my life! April sees the last four home games at Bloomfield Road. A season that started brightly with a 2-0 win over Everton for Keith Southern’s testimonial, has fizzled out. On April Fools Day we play Crystal Palace. So welcome back Ollie! Then Burnley (13th) and Sheffield Wednesday (16th) and finally Derby (27th).

The cricket season starts this month, which means summer is just around the corner! Easter is traditionally the time for planting out in the garden. Anzac Day 25th April Where does the word April come from? It could come from the Latin word aperire, "to open," because it’s the month trees and flowers begin to open. To this day Greeks call spring ἁνοιξις which literally means opening.

ANZAC stands for AUSTRALIAN & NEW ZEALAND ARMY CORPS. Anzac Day marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the first world war. The pride endures to the present - Anzac Day remains an important national occasion in both countries, as well as in Britain.

The Romans named the months in honour of divinities. April was sacred to Venus, so April could have come from Venus’s Greek name Aphrodite (Aphros). The Anglo-Saxons called April Oster-monath or Eostur-monath, the period sacred to Eostre or Ostara, the pagan Saxon goddess of spring. It’s from her name that we get the modern term ‘Easter’.

Anzac forces landed on 25 April 1915 near Gallipoli on the Turkish Aegean coast. Meeting fierce resistance, the campaign lasted for eight months, leaving 10,000 ANZACs and over 33,000 British dead.

St George's day is the 23rd day of the month. St Mark's Eve follows on the 24th. There is a superstition that the ghosts of those who are doomed to die within the year will be seen to pass into the church.

Although the ANZACs were a minority of the half-million Allied men who served at Gallipoli, the troops from the two young nations were often at the vanguard and became renowned for their doggedness despite what the British regarded as a lack of discipline. A full 10% of the New Zealand population (then just under 1 million) served overseas during World War I.

April showers are caused by new solar energy evaporating water from winter’s wet ground. The warm, moist air rises into the colder, higher atmosphere. These thermal streams form a cumulus cloud when they reach the atmosphere's condensation level. Thus starts the process for April showers. The birthstone of April is the diamond.

Two roads...

...diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveller, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same, And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference Robert Frost

St.Georges Day 23rd April

St. George is the patron saint of England. His emblem, a red cross on a white background, is the flag of England, and part of the British flag. St George's emblem was adopted by Richard The Lion Heart and brought to England in the 12th century. The king's soldiers wore it on their tunics to avoid confusion in battle.

Who was the real St George and how did he become England's patron saint? St George was a brave Roman soldier who protested against the Romans' torture of Christians and died for his beliefs. The popularity of St George in England stems from the time of the early Crusades when it is said that the Normans saw him in a vision and were victorious. St George is always depicted as a knight carrying a shield with a red cross (or a banner with a red cross), generally sitting upon a horse and always killing a dragon.

Here are two possible origins of our ‘April Fools Day’. In 1582, Pope Gregory XIII decreed that with the adoption of the Gregorian calendar, New Year's Day be April 1st. moved to January 1 from what was Don’t be fooled! We’ve warned you! April 1. Those that celebrated the Old New Year's Day on April 1 were ‘April Fools’. OR In the early Roman calendar, April 1 was the first day of spring, the spring equinox. Many celebrations of many cultures observed this day as the coming of the renewal of the earth and life. There would be sacrifices and gifts given to the gods. When the Christians came into power in the Roman empire, they created a celebration we call Easter that replaced the spring rituals. The old celebrations were ridiculed and made fun of. And people who observed these celebrations were persecuted. This was a chance to make fun of those who do not follow the correct beliefs.

Who was St George? Saint George (ca. 275-281–April 23, 303) was a soldier of the Roman Empire, from the then Greek-speaking Anatolia, now modern day Turkey. Saint George, "Liberator of captives and defender of the poor” is one of our most venerated saints. Immortalised in the tale of George and the Dragon, he is one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers and is the patron saint of Canada, Greece, Portugal, Russia, Palestine as well as, of course, England. King Edward III (reigned 1327 – 1377) was known for promoting the codes of knighthood and in 1348 founded the Order of the Garter. It was during his reign when George came to be recognised as the patron saint of the English monarchy With the revival of Scottish and Welsh nationalism, there has been renewed interest within England in St George, whose memory had been in abeyance for many years. This is most evident in the St George's flags which now have replaced Union Flags in stadiums where English sports teams compete. Strangely St George’s Day, on April 23rd, still remains a relatively low-key affair.

Good Friday commemorates the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ at Golgotha. Jesus was arrested in the garden of Gethsemane through the help of disciple Judas Iscariot who received money for betraying Jesus. Peter also denies Jesus three times during interrogation. Jesus is brought before Roman governor Pontius Pilate. Pilate declares Jesus innocent and washes his hands to show he has no part in his fate. However he hands Jesus to the crowd to be crucified with two criminals. After three hours Jesus cries out and gives up his spirit. There is an earthquake and the curtain in the temple is torn from top to bottom. The centurion on guard cries out “Beyond all doubt, this man was innocent" (Luke)

The Green Man is a sculpture or drawing of a face surrounded by or made from leaves. It was coined by Lady Raglan in 1939. Branches or vines may sprout from the nose, mouth or nostrils and these shoots may bear flowers or fruit. Commonly used as a decorative architectural ornament, Green Men are frequently found on carvings in churches. "The Green Man" is also a popular name for British public houses. The Green Man motif has many different faces and variations. Found in many cultures around the world, the Green Man is often related to natural deities springing up in different cultures throughout the ages. Primarily it is interpreted as a symbol of rebirth, or "renaissance", representing the cycle of growth being reborn anew each spring. The Green Man would appear to be pagan, perhaps a fertility figure or a nature spirit, and yet he frequently appears, carved in wood or stone, in churches, chapels, abbeys and cathedrals, with examples found dating from the 11th century through to the 20th century.

The Blackpool Time Travel Assocation. New members welcome. Next meeting Last Wednesday.

TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED THE 1930s, '40s, '50s, '60s and '70s!! First, we survived being put to sleep on our tummies in cribs covered with bright coloured lead-based paints. We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, locks on doors or cabinets, and we rode our bikes without helmets. We would ride in cars with no booster seats, no seat belts, no air bags, bald tires and sometimes no brakes.. We ate worms, mud pies and drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle. We shared one drink with four friends, from one bottle, and no one actually died from this. We ate cakes, white bread, real butter, and bacon. We drank lemonade made with real white sugar. And we weren't overweight. WHY? Because we were always outside playing... that's why! We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on. No one was able to reach us all day. --And, we were OKAY.. We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride them down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes.. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem. We didn’t have Play Stations, Nintendos, Sky TV, DVDs, mobiles or laptops. WE HAD FRIENDS - and we went outside and found them! We just walked to a friend's house, knocked on the door or just walked in and talked to them. We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth, AND NO-ONE GOT SUED! At school not everyone came top or made the sports team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!! The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law! Our generations have produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers, and inventors ever. Witness the past 50 years of innovation and new ideas.. We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility... and we learned how to deal with it all. If YOU are one of those born between 1925-1970,

CONGRATULATIONS FRIEND, YOU’RE BEAUTIFUL JUST AS YOU ARE! 29
