publisher’s POST Little things really do mean the most, but sometimes we forget to cherish them. Thankfully, the holidays come back around every year to remind us! While creating this issue, Regina and I strove to capture the vibrant nostalgia we feel during the holidays along with the ever-glowing warmth of local tradition. Among our favorite annual holiday traditions is the Roswell Nutcracker (p.22) presented annually by Roswell Dance Theatre and the Tolbert Yilmaz School of Dance. It was a conscious decision to put their Sugar Plum Fairy on the cover (again) – this time portrayed by longtime local dancer Lillie Jones. Can’t you almost hear Nutcracker music when you see it!?
What I find most fascinating about Roswell during the holidays is how all aspects– local business, culture, family and community– involve each other so seamlessly (more so than usual, which is to say a lot)! We want to express our most sincere gratitude for our clients and advertisers – we absolutely could not keep this up without your support! Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah and Happy “Roswellidays!”

Recap: Big Pumpkin 5K Run
This first time event for The Cottage School raised funds for program enhancements and campus improvements. Nearly 500 runners enjoyed the unique two-lap course, which was certified as a Peachtree Qualifier by The Atlanta Track Club. “The fact that we had such a high number of participants in our first year speaks volumes about our community connection,” said Kim Weber, Race Director and Advancement Director for The Cottage School. “We really wanted to host an event that would bring our students and families together with our community.” The Return of the Big Pumpkin 5K Run was hosted by The Cottage School and CrossFit North Fulton and sponsored by several community partners. The Cottage School is excited to host the next Big Pumpkin 5K Run on October 31, 2020 and is planning the addition of a “Little Pumpkin 1.5K Run” for our younger runners.

What’s not to like about melt-in-your-mouth pastry filled with dried fruits, apples and spices (cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg)? Judith shares a recipe from her dear Irish friend Marian Lynch. Your home will smell wonderful as they are baking in the oven – comforting and delicious. Oh, and you should know, despite the name, there is actually no meat as such in the recipe (but eaten as a traditional part of Christmas from the 16th century, and back then, the ‘meat’ may have just meant the filling part). Today it’s a sweet treat not to be missed this season!

Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. Combine the flour, salt and powdered sugar in a large bowl. Add in the ground almonds. Rub in the butter and margarine until it resembles breadcrumbs. Blend the egg yolk, lemon juice and the water together and gradually add to the dry ingredients, until just enough to hold together. Turn the pastry on to a lightly floured board and knead lightly. Cover the pastry and put aside in the fridge to relax for at least an hour or overnight. Roll out the pastry very thin and using a pastry cutter cut in to 2 inch rounds. Spoon 1 tsp of mincemeat on to half the rounds. Brush edges all around with cold water. Place another on top and press edges together. Prick with a fork. Bake for about 9 minutes until the pastry is golden brown. Allow to cool in the pan for a few minutes and then place mince pies on a cooling rack. Sprinkle with powdered sugar.

BY FRANK MACK Vin25 is so cool. It’s one man’s vision of a perfect wine bar. Dug out of an old stone cottage, fire pit outside, gravel lot. All of it under huge oaks. You’ll find it down Green Street, up Plum Alley and just off Canton Street. It’s an inside secret to an inside secret that is Roswell’s restaurant scene. But it’s nothing compared to the charm of its owner, humble star and locally grown talent, Mr. Phillip Cooper. Coop started so low down the pole he wasn’t even in the building. He began as a kid parking cars at Rays Steakhouse and by brains, guts and pure grit he became a top Sommelier, a feat in itself. Then owner/creator of Vin25. Then, owner/creator of Citizen Soul in Alpharetta. And finally, owner/partner of Cellared Roots Hospitality. A small but mighty restaurant group. Every step of the way he exudes class, maturity and heart. I’ve been impressed by him since reviewing Vin25 in 0’12. It was pure genius then and even better now. Glorious, gorgeous, lovely, a little local treasure with a parking lot. But remember please, it was nothing until Coop came along. Taking a shell of failure forgotten and dilapidated. That was his sweat and the dirt was real too. And turning it into this, a bit of heaven down an alleyway off a side street.
With a wink and a nod, Coop sipped his wine and looked well satisfied. I’ll tell you what. I’m going to have to leave the nest and visit his new place Citizen Soul in Alpharetta. He says it’s four times the size with a kitchen as big as Vin25 is in total. Imagine that! So why not us? Why Alpharetta for this huge new investment? Why is another great young restaurant person leaving Roswell to open a great new restaurant? He wants you to know that business is good and Roswell has been a great place to be and continues to be. But he is joining the people saying “Parking, Parking, Parking.” If we do not invest in ourselves and build a Parking Deck that is free for all, including me and you and you, we will be left behind. And if we fall far enough behind, well then, simply put, our golden goose is cooked.
Along the way he has proven he certainly understands work, food and ambience. But his real secret is in the people. Everyone matters. From dish pit up, everyone is important. Customers great and small are all treated special. You know he’s listening. He reminds me a lot of my father, as in, I hope to be like him if I ever grow up. He’s a smart cookie, proven in the real world, and you’re wise if you listen when he speaks. So over a bottle of very fine wine we shared a few bites of absolutely amazing food. Chef Sean Clark’s Braised Lamb Shank is like butter off the bone. The flavor is amazing, world class, you just can’t prepare this dish better. Roasted rapini, Casio e Pepe polenta and a local mushroom brood. Translation, roast lamb n’ potatoes, out of this world fantastic, no better anywhere. So it was obvious that the partnership with Chef Clark proved wise.

Join us at the beautiful Byers Theatre at City Springs as Artistic Directors Nancy Tolbert Yilmaz and Mary Lynn Taylor, along with the Roswell Dance Theatre, present their rendition of this holiday classic. And what about art in Roswell. What are your first impressions of that? Not a day goes by without an announcement for an art exhibition, a creative class or a public event in this city! It’s pretty clear that Roswell sees the connection between a culturally rich environment and a thriving community: the investment in the arts is bringing measurable effects to the city’s economy, health and well-being. A vibrant arts scene draws people to the community attracting visitors, getting residents involved, and increasing pedestrian activity, which makes streets safer. The arts are magnets for creative entrepreneurs who in turn attract new residents, customers, businesses, workers, and tourism. The integration of the arts into the way Roswell thinks about itself has turned the city into a pretty spectacular place to work, live and play.
Q3: I know it’s early, but what is your vision for the Arts in Roswell?
In September, Ghila Sanders was named Executive Director of the Roswell Arts Fund following a three-month nationwide search, taking the reins from Rochelle Mucha, founder. We met up with Ghila to learn more about her vision for the future of Arts in Roswell.
You’ve been on the job about a month now. What are your early impressions of Roswell? Roswell is an immensely welcoming community that pairs the charm of an historic small town with a deep understanding of what modern living is all about. I have already experienced this community’s culture of generosity in so many ways, from the 10U40 fundraiser that benefitted the Arts and Parks, to being invited to serve as a judge for the Roswell Youth Day Parade. It’s been such a pleasure getting to know some of the people and places that make this community so unique. 26
Right now I’m meeting as many people as I can - listening, absorbing, and making connections between people, ideas and resources. But I’m a big believer in having a vision for the future. I picture a community where art is a way of life, available at every stage and age, and embedded into urban planning, civic conversations, and education. A community where we are purposeful and intentional about investing in art and artists to advance the city’s vision – “Modern Spirit, Southern Soul.” On a personal note, I was born and raised in Italy and grew up surrounded by all kinds of art – music, dance, literature, drama, visual arts. History teaches us that times of greatest prosperity go hand-in-hand with cultural flourishing. The City of Roswell understands that creativity and innovation are deeply connected. That’s why they designated the Roswell Arts Fund as their advocate for the Arts.
Q4: Once developed, will you share your strategic plan and budget with the public? Absolutely! We get funding from a variety of sources, including fundraising activities, grants, and from the City of Roswell. Mark your calendars for next year’s festival on Sunday, October 4th, 2020
October 6th There is something unique and special about the Roswell Wine Festival. Other events in the area feature wine, host music, and take place outside but it’s the distinctive combination right here in historic Roswell that makes it among the most sought-after events in all of Atlanta. The 2019 Roswell Wine Festival was held Sunday, October 6th and one of the key ingredients to the event’s success is the superior wine selection. This year festival goers had the opportunity to sample over 300 wines along Canton Street. Peggy Robinson, Roswell Wine Festival co-founder shares, “We always try to make the festival very approachable. If you’re new to wine, our event is a great way to discover new grape varietals and producers.” The Brown & Company VIP tent is an event keystone and featured food from local favorites Table & Main and Osteria Mattone along with more premium wine selections. Dwight Cunningham, co-founder, states, “We curate all of the VIP wines. This year we featured over 35 ultra premium wines including a winery only selection from Thomas George Estates, a red blend from Screaming Eagle’s sister winery Jonata as well as a beautiful Bordeaux from the acclaimed Chateau Margaux.”
Atlanta’s only Master Sommelier, Michael McNeill, also took part in the event. He was a featured speaker along with Phillip Cooper from Vin25 as part of an educational wine seminar held in conjunction with the festival. Music and wine always pair well together. Soulful singer Alex Guthrie returned to headline the festival on lower Canton Street. He is currently on John Legend’s team as he competes to win NBC’s The Voice. Other musical performances were provided by long-time favorites Monica Spears and Derek Worth along with blues band the Breeze Kings. Over 100 local businesses and artists participated in the event, including Roswell Magazine. It is a great way to connect with the community and come together for a great cause. Each year the Roswell Wine Festival donates proceeds from the event to a local charity. For the very first year, the event will support three deserving non-profits. The primary benefactor will be the Roswell North Elementary Foundation who will use the funds to build an outdoor classroom at the school. Additional donations will be made to Star House and North Fulton Community Charities.

For hardworking pet parents, leaving your dog at home or in a kennel is the most difficult “goodbye." Throughout the day, you might feel pangs of guilt for their loneliness, boredom or separation anxiety. Man’s best friend would love to be with you at all times, but having a career renders this unfeasible. Fortunately for everyone with two legs or four, Roswell will soon be home to Dogtopia, a renowned dog daycare brand, at the Connexion Shopping Center. The team at Dogtopia of Roswell shares a lifelong passion for pets. General Manager Laura Ruiz (pictured above) owns a dog named Pepper with her husband and almost three-year-old son, and she has long felt called to pursue a career caring for animals. “In the pet care industry, I am able to merge a lot of my passions into one. I get to build great bonds with amazing dogs and their families, share my experience with other dog lovers, and I work with dogs every single day,” says Laura. “At Dogtopia, we have endless love for them all. And we stop at nothing to make sure they’re happy, safe and fulfilled even when you can’t be there.” 30

Kaitlyn Patrick (right) is the Pet Parent Relations Manager and a dog mom of five. She spent three years working at an animal hospital, where she “laughed with pet parents about silly things their pets have done, and cried with them as they say goodbye to their beloved companions.” Kaitlyn says her time in the veterinary industry was tough, but it “prepared [her] for a new life at Dogtopia, and the creation of happy memories sure to follow.” Recently, the Dogtopia team met with the folks at the Roswell Visitors Center, where they were given a list of local dog-friendly establishments. Funny enough, the list ended up being basically every establishment in Roswell. “There is a thriving dog and pet parent community here and we are so excited to become a part of it,” says Kaitlyn. From their new location, pet parents from Roswell and surrounding cities can pass through on their way to work and rest assured their dogs will be in good hands, staying safe, happy and entertained all day. Prior to being allowed in open play, each dog must pass an evaluation to ensure they are a good fit for the group. Upon approval, dogs are thoughtfully sorted into one of three different playrooms based on temperament, play style, social queues and special restrictions. This process is designed to ensure safety for all dogs and reduce anxiety for pet parents. Each playroom is temperature-controlled and equipped with rubberized flooring for soft steps and slip prevention. Individual HVAC systems circulate fresh air to keep the pups as healthy as can be in their “home away from home.” Using the Dogtopia smartphone app, pet parents can check in on their dog via webcam and expect to see them playing happily. The app can also be used to schedule daycare appointments and view the monthly schedule so your furry family member can attend extra-fun-filled event days.
“Mornings are pretty busy,” says Kaitlyn. “Our dogs start their day in open play and engage in stimulating activities and games with their Canine Coach practicing tricks, playing with bubbles, playing follow the leader, etc.” Then, pups are rewarded with downtime from 12 to 2 p.m. during which they can rest, nap and enjoy lunch (or medication if needed) while their Canine Coach cleans the playroom. “We sometimes bring in extra treats, such as protein bowls and peanut-butter Kongs, so the pups always have something exciting to look forward to!” Considering a day in the life of a dog at Dogtopia, pet parents can feel at-ease during their nine-to-fives. Life is too short – even in dog years – to not live it up on the daily.

A few pros of having a personal trainer are experience, accountability, proper technique, faceto-face interaction and motivation. A few cons may consist of scheduling conflict, cost and an inexperienced trainer.

I’m obsessed with stunning flowers, design and traveling – a combo I’m thrilled to call my fruit of labor. I love putting wedding couples’ and business professionals’ minds at ease by “blooming” their event visions into real life experiences. With that comes my immense love for details, creativity and personalizing each event – along with my awesome design team and Australian shepherd, Macallan (a.k.a. my doggie design assistant). Two things people might not know about me are: 1: Traveling is my love language; and 2: I’m actually not born-andraised in Georgia. This Cali girl was born in Sonoma, CA (a.k.a. wine country) and raised in San Diego. College transformed my passion for flowers into a reality where I majored in Horticulture: Floral Design. A Horticulture education grew roots in my heart and formed my first entrepreneurial business: Blooming Hites. It’s been a wonderful nine years and counting working with blooms and decor designs. Blooming Hites was only a few years old when I decided to spread our wings, fly to Georgia and call “Hot Atlanta” our new home. We set roots here in Roswell, but our design team has been able to take floral and design adventures all over the world. We can’t wait to see how many places our clients’ events will lead us to. Fun Fact: A California poppy is our signature flower in the BH brand. I grew up with gorgeous California poppy blooms surrounding me and whispering to my heart. It wasn’t until after our studio fire mishap and all of the community support we received from our BH family, Roswell community, family and friends, did I realize our signature California poppy was destiny. It turns out that this specific flower rises above the ashes and blooms after forest fires. They literally sprout from ashes – how cool is that? They know how to keep blooming no matter what season of life they are in, and I hold that deeply close to my heart as inspiration and a pretty reminder to persevere every day. Keep Blooming.

SAM ROBB LIVED BIG. He was described as “larger than life” by those who knew him. As a sophomore in high school, he stood six feet five inches and weighed two hundred twenty-five pounds. He also made friends easily with his gregarious and outgoing personality. When he was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, Sam tackled treatment just like he would an opponent on the field. He fought hard and always assumed the best. Unfortunately, four years after he thought he had kicked cancer for good, he noticed that he got winded during exercise and went back to the doctor to find out he had relapsed with a tumor on his lung. Never one to give up, Sam created the mantra, “Fightin’ till the last breath.” A number of nationally renowned doctors felt the surgery to remove the tumor was life-threatening. Refusing to live in fear, Sam sought out several opinions until he found a brave surgeon who agreed to go for the “long ball” and remove the tumor and a lung. Sam passed away during surgery.

His family formed the Sam Robb Fund, a Named Fund of CURE Childhood Cancer, in an effort to cement his legacy and continue his tenacious fight against childhood cancer. Their original desire was two-fold: to fund the Sam Robb Fellow at the Aflac Cancer Center and Blood Disorders Services of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and Emory School of Medicine. In this way, Sam is able to help train the pediatric oncologists who will serve future cancer patients with the same love and caring attention that he received. The family also directed their funds to support CURE’s Open Arms Meal
Program. In 2018, Sam’s family identified an area of great need and decided to move part of their fundraising efforts toward healing the emotional and psychosocial needs of patients and families in treatment. So instead of supporting families through meals, they now support them through CURE’s Counseling Program. Sam’s mother and father and his three sisters continue to be committed to the Sam Robb Fellow. In fact, 2019 saw the naming of the sixth Sam Robb Fellow, Dr. Juhi Jain at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. There are now five former Sam Robb Fellows working in pediatric oncology in Dallas, Pittsburgh, Colorado and Florida, as well as here in Atlanta. The funding provided by the Sam Robb Fund allows doctors working on their specialty to focus on their medical training without the burden of raising money. Once they completed their training, they can focus on healing children. This year, the Sam Robb Fund crossed the $1 million mark in funds raised since inception. This amazing feat has been accomplished through various annual events – events that Sam would have enjoyed – including an annual golf tournament, basketball tournament and Brewfest event. But it is also a testimony to the commitment and dedication of his family, friends, community, and volunteers who have poured their time and talent into building his legacy.
