THE ESSENTIALS (with Barclay Butera, Interior Designer)

9 Staple Items You Must Have In Your Home

Nothing cozies up a room like pillows. I am known for mixing and matching patterns and colors, I love the way these new pillows from my Azul bedding collection liven up this room.

I know when I first move into a home, I love to shake it up with my favorite wallpaper. This is a bit more of a time investment, but with the millions of choices out there, you can really infuse your personality into your new home.

Design your room around a good rug, or change your rugs seasonally to give your room a facelift! Look how this Prism rug from Nourison brightens up an otherwise very dark floor.

Nothing says “welcome home” at the end of a long day quite like a chic, wellstocked bar. I take my vodka on the rocks with a twist!

Deck the walls; good art can set the tone for an entire room. It’s not always the frosting on the cake. I’m partial to nautical and ocean scenes these days, I dare you not to relax when looking at this!

Mirrors add instant pizzazz to any room. I love the way they reflect light; especially by a window or with a fabulous chandelier in the same room.

Stay Cool, Add Heat in the Kitchen With Sub-Zero and Wolf Showrooms

Look up to your ceiling! When you find the home of your dreams, a stunning chandelier in your entryway immediately makes a statement.

If you have any opportunity at all to include cute barstools into your design schematic, then do it! I love the effortless, casual way they influence how we dine, visit, and have cocktails with friends and family.

Good lighting and wonderful lamps are critical to the balance and proportion to a room. My new Marble Cove Couture lamp has plenty of style and is a work of art in its own.

Why You Need Hard Floors in Your Next Home Melissa Kovach, Vice President, Warren Christopher Q: What is the most popular wood that home owners are choosing to put in their homes these days? Melissa Kovach: The most requested wood we’re installing now is Engineered Western European Oak—an updated timeless look very popular now in design circles. Warren Christopher’s Euro Oak platform gives us a wide range of options for custom colors. The last few years have definitely been leaning towards the “grays” but we have come up with tons of custom colors that go more toward beige, taupe, and griege tones. The coordinate with most home styles, and don’t limit our clients to furnishing exclusively around gray.

Q: Gorgeous! Is it practical? MK: That’s the great thing about our Engineered Western European Oak—it’s ridiculously practical! For families, pets, beach life, or in the mountains—it’s sturdy, user-friendly, and stands up to a variety of weather and usage conditions. We have numerous options for texture as well (wire brushing, tumbling, antiqued, and more). We also finish most of our floors with an Ultra Matte Oil or Hard Wax Oil Finish. This is great for daily and yearly maintenance—literally, my seven-year-old cleans our floors! It’s also made from soy beans and coconut oil, which assist in retaining moisture in the floor. Q: What is a style wood that will never go out of style? MK: The European Oak is truly timeless—an elegant, classic that will never feel dated or stale.

Q: What are the advantages to using real wood versus vinyl? MK: There is nothing that will look and feel like real wood. Real wood provides an elegance and patina that enhances your home like no other. For most people, their home is their largest investment—protect and enhance your investment with gorgeous, classic, and enduring real wood flooring. What are your top tips on how to clean your hard wood floors and make their beauty last? Maintenance will depend on the type of finish on the floor. We supply Maintenance Instructions & Cleaning Supplies for each client after the flooring install is complete. Re-coating or refreshing your flooring is key to making the beauty last for generations. We recommend re-coating your flooring every few years. A re-coat is a quick and simple process—we hand-abrade the existing clear finish off your floors, and add a new finish to protect the color of the floor. Although this technique does not eliminate deep gauges of scratches, it brings luster and beauty back into your valuable floors.
