Welcome to the 10th Edition of Spotlight Magazine

s we continue our roller coaster journey through 2020, it is easy to sometimes feel overwhelmed and a little lost. We hope that by giving a platform to local business, community groups and organisations, Spotlight Magazine is helping to restore some normality to your life. We’re delighted that, despite the Covid-19 restrictions that continue to affect us, our latest issue is bigger than ever. Proof, if it were ever needed, that life goes on in this wonderful community of ours.

Rotary Queensferry and Queensferry District and Community Council. There is also a feature on Queensferry Heritage Trust. If you run an organisation that would benefit from being featured in Spotlight, just drop us a line at hello@spotlight-mag. and we’ll happily include it. Finally, a heartfelt thank you to everyone who helped us with the distribution of the last issue. We were overwhelmed with some very kind and generous offers of help - so many that we were unable to respond to every one. We will get around to thanking everyone who offered help in due course, and to potentially accept your assistance for a future issue. If you need additional copies of Spotlight, please call Words & Pictures on 0131 319 2105 to arrange to collect some.

This issue covers what would otherwise be a time of festivity and good cheer. No-one yet knows what Christmas this year will look like but is almost certainly going to be different to anything we’ve experienced before. For this reason, we’ve tried to adopt an appropriate tone with messages from Christmas in Queensferry and Queensferry Parish Church to inform and inspire you.

Whatever the next couple of months hold in store for you, your family and your business, please accept our very best wishes. Stay safe and we’ll see you in 2021.

In this issue, we pay a visit to Craigie’s Education & Environment Project and we hear, as always, from regular contributors,

Church News by Rev David Cameron

A Christmas like no other…?

with some unusual gifts for the bairn: Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh!

Imagine the scene, shouldn’t be too hard given the rumours around the cancellation of Christmas being mooted in the media of late… Christmas without: The switching on of the lights in the ferry; the school choirs singing their socks off; the Queen and Gracious Lady hitting the button; the sleigh with Mr Ho Ho Ho meandering around our streets; the family gathering around the table; the visits to friends and family near and far; the church services even at the unearthly hour of midnight(!); the city an adventure playground of rides and music and lights and laughter; the hot soup and mulled wine, the donuts and pretzels; the trees and lights and decorations... A Christmas like no other…? Well let me take you back to a day when none of the above happened. There was just a cattle shed out the back of a local inn; a mum and a dad and a new born baby; a star in the sky to give them some unexpected light; a distant choir gie’ing it laldy and waking the babes; surprise visitors – a few ordinary blokes down from the hills – shepherds, complete no doubt with their flock, and afterwards some grand looking travelers complete

That’s it – no fairy lights – no tinsel – no trees – no turkey – no sleigh – no donuts but yet the hope and love born on that first Christmas Day has trickled down through history – over 2000 years of it and it is said: ‘that of all the armies that ever marched, all the navies that ever sailed, all the parliaments that ever sat, all the kings that ever reigned-put together-have not affected the life of those on this earth as much as that one, solitary life.’ This child was Jesus and through his life, death and resurrection the world has been able to discover hope and love, forgiveness and peace, purpose and joy even when the situation around us lacks the sparkle and wonder that we so often take for granted. Why not invite Him into your lives this season – his coming makes all the difference! Wishing you and yours a healthy and peaceful Christmas - especially this year. PS check out the websites of our local churches this year to see what special events we’re planning – whilst the buildings may not be fully open the church is alive and well!

Christmas in Queensferry S adly, due to COVID restrictions and the safety of the community, no Christmas Lights Switch on event can take place in 2020. However, all the lights and decorations will be installed as normal. The committee is planning to broadcast a pre-recorded video on what would have been the switch on event night, Thursday 26th November. Plans are still being finalised at the time of writing but we are hoping to have various performances, a message from Santa and a switch on. Please keep an eye on our website and Facebook page for details and the broadcast link. Please note there will be no event to attend on the High St, the broadcast is pre-recorded, please watch from home or indoors, as per social distancing regulations. We thought this may be an appropriate time to look back at how we got to where we are today, thank you for your support over the years... Prior to 2008 the Christmas Lights were supplied by City of Edinburgh Council (CEC), funded by a sub group of the former Queensferry Business Association (QBA). This consisted of a number of large concrete blocks holding a scaffold tube with a decoration fixed to the pole, dropped at various locations and powered from the nearest street light by cable. QBA (i.e. local businesses) paid £5.5k each year to CEC for the lights & services. In 2008 there was a significant shortfall in funding and QDCC negotiated with the 14

Almond Partnership to pick up the cost in the event of any shortfall in funding, on the understanding that efforts would be made to raise funds to cover the costs. An AGM was held early the following year and the Christmas in Queensferry (ChiQ) committee formed around the constitution that had been prepared in 2008. The committee quickly realised that the present approach for the Christmas lights was not sustainable. Businesses were reluctant to sponsor the less than attractive Christmas lights and were looking for something more in keeping with the conservation area. ChiQ enquired of Christmas lights suppliers what was available in the market place and one supplier, Blachere Illuminations, came forward with an exciting and refreshing proposal. At the same time, we learned that The City of Edinburgh had allocated capital funds to install power infrastructure for the Christmas lights so we were able to influence the positioning of power connections. Funds were successfully raised to cover the costs of purchasing the lights and we were very fortunate that Balfour Beatty who were working on the Forth Bridge refurbishment provided labour and materials to install the lights. ChiQ was also able to use Ferry Fair contacts for hiring the stage and transitioning the lights switch-on event to a new level with some degree of professionalism. That’s when we set up a small procession and the Rotary Club’s Santa Sleigh had joined the event, forming the basis of the events for the coming years.

ChiQ continued the plan from 2009 and applied for a Lottery Grant from ‘Awards for All’ to purchase the next phase of the lights which consisted of the Kids Decorations at the Bellstane, The Council Office decorations and lamppost “wrap-a-rounds”. ChiQ was successful with the application to Awards for All and received £4500 along with a very successful fundraising campaign being supported by Evans of Leeds, Edinburgh Airport, Partnership Grant and number of smaller donations that all added up a total of £15,000. Balchere, facilitated by ChiQ, held a competition in P6 classes; Queensferry, Echline, St Margaret’s and Dalmeny and judged the winner, whose decorations we still use today. What ChiQ hadn’t reckoned on was the 2010 winter, which was the worst on record and the switch-on event was canceled because of the heavy snow that fell. Since then, however, ChiQ has never looked back. Organising each

year’s events and lighting, fundraising throughout the year, with great support from the likes of Edinburgh Airport, local housing developers such as Cala and Taylor Wimpey, Almond Neighbourhood Partnership, Tesco Bags of Help, Scotmid, Rosebery Hall, QDCC, Orocco Pier who arrange the fireworks every year and many, many local businesses who sponsor the decorations and/ or provide support. Without that funding and the work of the ChiQ volunteers, none of this would happen. The last few years we have managed to replace most of the lights to new energy efficient LED’s, improved the decorations, bought power supplies for the new lamp posts, developed the stage event involving younger performers recently and seen spin off events emerge, such as the Hawthorn Bank Carol Singing. If you would like to get involved, in any way, such as sponsoring the lights, fundraising, physical help with installations, marshalling, administration, etc, then please get in touch with us through our website or Facebook page, www.facebook. com/ChristmasInQueensferry Thank you and Merry Christmas from all at ChiQ. 15

Kirkliston Gala Day

irkliston Gala Day has been around since 1928. On only ten occasions since then (1940 – 1945, due to World War II and then from 1959 – 1962, due to a lack of local support) has it failed to take place. 2020 so nearly joined the ranks of these missing years due to a global pandemic. Despite this, and just before a fresh round of Covid-19 restrictions took hold,

the 2020 crowning of the Kirkliston Children's Gala Queen took place. It was a crowning ceremony like no other. After being delayed from June it eventually took place on 12th September at Conifox Adventure Park and without the crowds that normally line the way for the Queen and her court. 18

Georgia Scholes and her court stopped at The Cross to lay the wreath at the war memorial en route to Conifox. The hard working committee and a small gathering of friends and family bore witness as Gracious Lady, Elaine Robinson, crowned the 2020 Queen. It was a demonstration of resilience and a proud celebration of a tradition that goes back generations. A request on the Gala Day facebook page is now looking for volunteers to help with the 2021 event:

DCC has continued operating remotely using various online tools. Monthly meetings are held on the fourth Monday of every month except December, are open to the public and are currently conducted using MS Teams video conferencing. Anyone wishing to join the meeting or to raise any points, should email us through our website. The position of Minute Secretary is presently open for anyone wishing to devote a small number of hours a month, attending the monthly meeting to take notes (approx two hours) and writing up the minutes via Word and email. Applications and more details through our website. Planning: The CALA public virtual consultation on the Builyeon Rd Mixed Use Development proposal, which ran up until 9th Oct, was well engaged. CALA will now make final adjustments from the feedback prior to submitting a detailed planning application for the site to CEC. The Ferrymuir (old Corus site) planning application has been granted permission, construction can now commence. Transport: A proposal from City of Edinburgh Council (CEC) to extend the 20mph limit on Bo’ness Rd from Walker 30

Drive to Echline Ave was presented early Oct. The High St refurbishment plans continue to be developed by CEC, Ironside Farrar and the Steering Group. The Spaces for People High St plans, which aim to trial a one way (west to east) traffic system from Gote Lane to beyond Sealscraig, with widened pavements, are still in finalisation at the time of writing. Environment: Now that the bird nesting season is over, CEC have commenced trimming of foliage from public owned land across paths and pavements. QDCC respectfully requests private home/land owners to check their property perimeter for intrusions and trim as required to allow safe access for all. Please note that the next scheduled test of the Dalmeny Community Alert Siren will take place at 11:30am, repeated again at 13:30, on Thursday 19th November 2020. The alert will consist of a repeating, variable pitch tone in 60 second bursts. The all clear will be a 60 second all clear tone (flat pitch). Each test will last no more than 5 minutes. Health & Wellbeing: The drive through flu clinics appeared to have been well managed with positive feedback. The walk in clinics are scheduled for Sat 14th and Sun 15th Nov.

Please see for details and eligibility. Health in Mind are presently running their final sessions for Queensferry as funding is ending. Please make use of these final sessions if you need help, as popularity will build a strong case for future funding allocation.

he Queensferry Heritage Trust, which currently has just short of 100 members had its 5th birthday in April this year, but obviously there was no celebration to mark the occasion. The Trust, a registered charity, was set up to stimulate interest in the beauty, history, and character of our town, an ‘Outstanding Conservation Area’. Over the last five years, between October and April, we have organised a series of talks in the Masonic Lodge, on a wide range of topics related to Queensferry past, present and future. Unfortunately, the programme had to stop in February, but the work of the Trust continues.

You may have heard that we organised the replacement of the glass in the Provost’s lamp on Villa Road in January – the Burgh insignia on each of the four panes had all but disappeared over the years. Just one of a number of projects. Our first ‘Doors Open Day’ event was held in September 2016 when we got permission to allow the public into the ‘Forts’ – the WWI gun emplacements near the Forth Bridge. Over the last three years, In conjunction with Queensferry History Group, The Masonic Lodge and Greenferry, we have done the same, featuring the Vennel Churchyard, and last year we included Queensferry’s other three churches. We were delighted to see such interest from both local people and visitors. Our ‘Research group’ tirelessly delved into the life and times of one of Queensferry’s greatest worthies – Dr John Mason, who lived on Station Road. Not only the headmaster of Queensferry School, but a WWI veteran, a war poet, Past Master of the Lodge, eminent local historian, and founder of the original Burgh Museum. One of our most ambitious projects is ‘Digital Queensferry’ – to produce an on-line, searchable, library of documents 36

relating to Queensferry’s heritage and history. This will include published and unpublished works and will be free to access by schools and private researchers. We continue to have representation on the Community Council, as well as the Forth Bridge World Heritage Management Group. Perhaps one of our most immediate and demanding roles is our involvement on the Steering Group for the High Street Improvement Works. As we all know, this, and the proposed ‘Spaces for People’ project are an on-going saga. If you would like to know more about the Trust, please look at our website – We welcome new members. Our subscriptions are normally £10 per year for individuals and £15 for family members, payable on 1st October. However the Committee propose to wait until ‘normal service is resumed’. All members have an opportunity to contribute to our various research projects or activities, so if you are interested, contact us at Queensferry Heritage Trust is a registered Charity No SC05644 and an affiliate member of the Scottish Civic Trust. 37

he annual QCCC / Rotary Charity Golf Day was held on Monday 21st September at Dundas Parks Golf Club, South Queensferry. The competition is organised by the Rotary Club of South Queensferry and benefits Queensferry Churches Care in the Community also known as Queensferry Care. QCCC was formed twenty-five years ago. Its mission is to provide quality support services to older people and their carers in North West Rural Edinburgh, enabling them to maintain an independent lifestyle within their own communities.

able weather - so no excuses on the day! Activity and play was organised with strict social distancing following all the current Government Covid Guidelines. The successful golf and fundraising day was enjoyed by all. The grand sum of ÂŁ2,775 was raised through team entry fees, hole sponsorship and a very successful online raffle. A great effort for a well-deserving charity. The day was organised a little differently this year, but achieved a tremendous result all round. QCCC and the Rotary Club of South Queensferry would like to thank all players, volunteers, sponsors and raffle prize donors. Thanks are also due to Dundas Parks Golf Club for use of their challenging course.

The competition saw fourteen teams with a total of fifty-six enthusiastic golfers play eighteen holes over a well-prepared course at Dundas Parks in reason-

Spotlight on Food

ollowing on from the successful introduction of our food feature in the previous issue of Spotlight, we continue with a visit to Dakota Edinburgh which, as local readers will know, is located at Ferrymuir, South Queensferry.

clean taste of the spinach. The salmon is an original take on Christmas dinner and as it is lighter option than some other seasonal roasts, it leaves plenty of room for pudding! Dakota’s Christmas pudding is everything you would hope it would be and more. The spicy notes of a traditional pudding mixture served as an individual portion with fresh berries and a heavenly brandy anglaise. You pour the anglaise yourself but there’s no point in measuring - you’ll want to tip the whole lot in!

Despite the busy trunk road and supermarket nearby, the elegant surroundings quickly make you forget where you are and the newly refurbished grill is reminiscent of an elegant city centre, boutique restaurant where hours can be spent in good company with fine dining.

At the time of writing, covid-19 restrictions are fluid so we cannot guarantee what, if any alcohol you will be able to order to accompany this dish. Our recommendation is to book in as a guest and either order room service or enjoy dinner as a resident, with an aperitif and digestif in your room!

The new, seasonal menu is now available at Dakota and the dishes featured here are (pictured l to r above) a perfect Christmas pairing. First, a fillet of salmon with spinach, tartar hollandaise and buttered new potatoes. This is followed by desert of Christmas Pudding with brandy anglaise and redcurrants. These are part of the set festive menus served from the 30th November until the 23rd of December, costing just £20 for both courses, or add a third course and pay just £25 for all three.
