MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — It is the time of year you see high school kids with flowy dresses, corsages, tuxedoes and boutonnieres. It is prom season. But why do high schools even have a prom and what is the history of this rite of passage? Good Question. “Wasn’t it when Prometheus took fire from the heavens and tossed it into a disco ball, starting a crazy party?” joked Cameron, a Fridley High School Senior. No, prom doesn’t come from Prometheus, instead prom is short for promenade. Before prom became a big money and a big deal, people marched in to the senior class dance. But not in high school, historians believe prom started as a college event — largely to celebrate the end of senior year. Historians discovered the word “prom” in a journal in 1894 of an Amherst College student who went to prom at nearby Smith College. As American teenage culture grew stronger in the 1940’s, prom became the senior dance at high school. In the 1950s and 1960s, prom moved from the school gym to fancy ballrooms. Prom has had some interesting tangles with the presidency: in 1963, President John F. Kennedy had to cancel a fundraiser at the Beverly Hilton, because the hotel double-booked a school prom. The Hilton tried to cancel the prom, but the president decided to cancel his event. In 1975, President Gerald Ford’s daughter, Susan, got to have her prom at the White House. Prom has also become a scene for culture wars: with schools being sued over banning interracial couples, and same-sex couples. However, what started as a casual party, transformed into a dance where high school kids wore their Sunday best, then into an event, and today it is now a spectacle.

Exclusive Interview What was an incident that happened in your life that you would like to share with readers? What should you look out for when you’re growing up? My freshman year was probably my hardest year of High School, being young and in high school is a challenge and full of peer pressure. I started hanging out with people I never really hung out with, gang bangers, drug dealers... I got a wake up call, I accepted help, I accepted the fact that I had problems and needed help. What is the one thing you did that anyone can do to achieve what you have? I changed myself and my ways for MYSELF. I never gave up, no matter how hard things got in my life. Everyone can change themselves because it is never too late. Who was the most influential person in your life besides your parents? The most influential person in my life was my school psychologist Shannon Keehan. Was there a teacher that inspired you in the classroom? My ROTC Teacher Major Richard Ruiz. How? Major started at the bottom just like me. Just like others. He is a marine Corps verteran, he has changed and taught me a lot. Major never gives up on his students, as much as they nag and complain, he pushes them. He is always happy no matter what’s going on in his life, he always has a smile on his face. How have your friend reacted to your accomplishments? How has this challenged you? The friends I have now have been really supportive of me and my accomplishments. It made me feel really good because they always ask me how I did it, how I changed, how “I got better”. Of course I still have those friends that are stuck in the same spot we were all in, but they don’t want to change. What do you like to do when you’re not in school? On my free time I love to work out, I like working. Having a job keeps me happy and so does working out.

· 1 loaf rustic bread, cut into 1/2-inch-thick slices · Flaky sea salt, such as Maldon · 8 ounces fresh goat cheese · 1 cup mixed fresh herbs, such as basil, mint, and flat-leaf parsley · Extra-virgin olive oil, for brushing and drizzling

· 2 pounds assorted heirloom tomatoes, cut into 1/2-inch thick slices if large; halved if small · Red-pepper flakes

What was an incident that happened in your life that you would like to share with readers? What made you decide to be a teacher? My decision to be a teacher was not based on a single event. It was a byproduct of years of experiences with incredible teachers. Their genuine interest and passionate teaching grew like seeds within me until I knew that I wanted to do the same. I wanted to inspire a generation of young people the same. What is one thing all students can do to get the same result as Mahsa? Students can deny their natural inclination toward complacency and push toward personal growth, both academically and personally. Who is the most influential person in your life beside your parents? My wife of 18 years.

Was there a teacher that inspired you in the classroom? How? I was inspired by many teachers. I can think of my High School history teacher. He was fun, challenging, and personable. I had a good experience with my high school drama teacher. He took time to talk and find about me as an individual. All the teachers that I have been impacted by took the time to connect with me and to challenge me. What do you like to do when you are not teaching? I am a fine art oil painter.
