About the School:

Oak Grove High School, located in the heart of the Silicon Valley in South San Jose, was established in 1967. It is a comprehensive public high school serving grades Nine to twelve. The school has been recognized as a California Distinguished School, as well as an Annenberg Leadership School. Oak Grove is one of 11 traditional high schools in the East Side Union High School District, which also serves charter schools and alternative education (or small-but-necessary) schools. Oak Grove High School's mission is to provide a safe, caring learning environment where students achieve the academic, personal and social development required to become life-long learners, pursue post-secondary education, compete in a changing job market, and participate in a multicultural, democratic society.

The Science Club: Oak Grove is making an initiative to create the next generation of scientists in America. The purpose of Science Club is to promote interest in science among all Oak Grove students and the San Jose community. We hope to spread both science interest and knowledge to students and their families by making Science Club a fun, welcoming environment where science is relevant and useful. We hope to develop and expand the critical thinking and problem solving skills among the students who participate in Science Club. Some activities the club has done in the past are chemistry and physics experiments, field trips, science fairs and competitions, movie and video nights, telescope projects, optical illusions, and innovative thermal regulators for small satellites.

Q: Why did you Select the Students? A: I selected the students because they have closely examine how science and technology affects the world around them. Each of the student’s projects have a real-world application, whether it is Ocean Acidification or the Civil Engineering of Buildings, or Space Satellite projects. Scan For Video Interview

Q: Were there any incidents that have happened in your life that you would like to share with the readers? What made you decide to be a teacher? A: Becoming a teacher was not my original plan. I began as a graphic designer for a marketing department. I later recieved my teaching credential in science. I have taught biology anatomy physiology for Reswick science in advance science research.

Q: What is one thing that students can do to get the results as these heroes? A: I tell them at first they need to define what is success to them. They need to make good decisions in order to achieve their goals. The students have pursued a topic of interest and as a result are able to conduct research that can give back to their community and society by making people's lives better.

Q: Was there a teacher that inspired you in the classroom? How? A: When I was a high school student I was deeply inspired by my social studies teacher, Ms. Weight. She taught us that we had to define our own realities and shared her life stories with us the stories were often inspirational for us to overcome challenges and motivating many of us to pursue ways of making life better for others from her we learn the Moliere quote, "The greater the obstacle, the greater the glory in overcoming it."

Q: How do the other teachers and your friends were at your accomplishments and how it has a challenge you? A: Fellow teachers and my friends are supportive. Even though I have many things going on around campus between student clubs in academic courses, my friends often lend an ear and words of encouragement when times get rough.

Michael Pham Q: Can You talk about a scientific learning experience? A: I participated in a competition called Tech Challenge, an engineering competition hosted the Tech Museum of Innovation. Last year, my team’s designs had been failing and there was a real struggle to get anything working. A few days before the competition my team gave up on the design and walked out on me. I worked late nights in order to get something to the competition. In the end, design was not finished in time but was better to have tried and failed than to have given up.

Q: What kind of exploring do you enjoy doing?

A: I love the outdoors. During the summers I bike, sometimes I’ll do a hundred miles in a single day exploring. In the evenings I observe the night sky with my telescope. Amatuer Astronomy like I do is probably one of the most humbling hobbies there are. I love to explore space and the stars with my telescope. Enjoying what the universe offers outisde this world. Looking out into the night sky, you get a sense of how small your place in the vast universe is.

Q: What is a sacrifice you made in your life for science? A: Just recently being in track and having a very important science project, I had to decide to miss my first track meets in order to keep data going for my project. In the end, my science project ended up winning an award and I still did well in the track meet by getting third in my event.

Q: Was there a teacher that inspired you in the classroom? A: Yes, at Oak Grove Ms. Claudio has been a huge influence more than just in science but in being a leader on campus and in wanting to become a scientist. She helped me build my club with the goals I had. While being in her Advanced Science class this year, Ms. Claudio was able to help flourish and become interested in science.

Q: What inspired you to study space and satellites? A: When I was a kid I visited Lockheed Martin Space Systems and that was when I became interested in space.

Q: Who was the most influential person in your life besides your parents? A: The most influential people are my grandparents because they always took time to invest in my life. From fishing trips in the summer to help with math homework my grandparents have played a huge role in the development of myself.

Q: What is the proudest accomplishment of your scientific career thus far? A: Creating the heatsink model for a satellite has been a great acomplishment. I hope this technology can open the doors to my space career.
