WHAT A WEEKEND! The Merrick Festival this past weekend ended with a perfect day. The rides, fun crafts, booths, demonstrations, food and more were in abundance. The wind and the iffy weather on Saturday didn’t stop the crowds from enjoying the festival. See more photos on pages 8 and 9.

Calhoun Choir alumni pay tribute to Talbot Thayer photos by Megan Kapler

They came from Oregon, Washington State, Iowa, Texas, Florida, Georgia and the tri-state area; they graduated Calhoun in the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s. They made this journey home to see old friends, to join in song and pay tribute to their high school Choir Director S. Talbot Thayer. Everyone had different experiences in relationship to this director. But all would say though that he gave them tremendous gifts that they cherish to this day. They gathered on Saturday, September 8. Starting time was 7:30 p.m. but many showed up early as they didn’t want to considered late. Within minutes of Mr. Thayer’s arrival, over 150 voices joined in song and the mood was set for the night. – Charlie Greco

The celebration of Mepham High School’s 75th Anniversary jam packs a week of enthusiasm, spirit and pure pirate pride. With the participation of students, teachers, parents and community, past, present and future, it should sure be a celebration to remember. The festivities kicked off on Sunday, September 9, where all alumni were welcomed back to what was their second home and enjoyed presentations in the auditorium as well as a performance by the jazz band. After, they continued with a tea party in the library, and cut the red ribbon on the new restoration project that the Alumni Association funded this summer. As the day activities came to a close people remembered the importance, pride and tradition the alumni instilled in the school years past their graduation date. The celebration continues all week long as the student body participates in what has always been an annual tradition. From the start of the week, students are dressing in the assigned theme brought to them by the Student Government. It was acceptable for students to wear pajamas on Monday, be mismatched on Tuesday, and have a twin on Wednesday. They can represent their favorite sports team on Thursday and proudly show off the school colors on Friday. Students will conclude the day with

Residents in county Legislator Dave Denenberg’s 19th District left no stone unturned as they voiced their complaints about community policing and quality of life issues at his community meeting on Thursday, at the North Merrick Public Library. Legislator Denenberg’s invited guests were Problem-Oriented Policing (POP) unit night shift Sergeant John Barrett and plainclothes Sergeant Michael O’Mara of the First Precinct in Baldwin; and night shift Sergeant Burt Fried of the Seventh Precinct in Seaford. The consolidation of the two

precincts is on track for November 1, after which the Seventh Precinct will be called the First Precinct. Legislator Denenberg, who was present for only a short portion of the meeting, between other obligations, was adamant about reminding those present that he voted against the reduction in Nassau County precincts from eight to four. “The number of patrols are keyed into the number of precincts,” Mr. Denenberg explained. “And that’s your final defense. It’s getting more difficult to respond, and I don’t like it.” Mr. Denenberg complained that the Seventh Precinct is running out of room

removes the injected air. The injected air is then treated with activated carbon before being released into the atmosphere. Additionally, a chemical oxidation process will be used to treat another VOC – chlorinated ethene compounds – found in the groundwater. As the chemical oxidant comes into contact with the contaminant, a reaction occurs that breaks down the contaminant into carbon dioxide and water. The DEC is accepting written comments on this proposed plan for a 30 day period which began on September 10 through October 10. The plan is available for public review at the reference

The state Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is proposing a new plan to clean-up remaining contaminant's in the groundwater beneath and near by the Busy Bee Cleaners on Merrick Road in Merrick. This is a voluntary cleanup program and follows another cleanup effort at the site during the 1990s. The Busy Bee site, at 1818 Merrick Road between Montauk Avenue and Beach Drive in Merrick, has been a dry cleaning facility since the 1970s. According to DEC documents, the facility released dry cleaning waste – tetracholoroethylene – (PCE) which caused soil, soil vapor and groundwater contamination at the site. A soil vapor extraction system was installed in August of 1994 and operated through April 1996. Bill Fonda, spokesman for the DEC, told Merrick Life the “system put in place

in the 1990s didn’t address groundwater contamination on or off the site, which this plan will remediate,” he said. Robert Bernstein, owner of Busy Bee Cleaners, said he has “worked for many years with the DEC and will take the next step to address the groundwater issue.” The DEC has issued a proposed remedial action work plan to cleanup the site and is seeking public comment. This proposed plan will treat groundwater contaminated with volatile organic compounds (VOCs) using air sparging, a soil vapor extraction system and chemical oxidation technology. Air sparing is a process that physically removes contaminant's from the groundwater by injecting air into a well that has been installed into the groundwater. The VOCs are carried with the injected air into a vadose zone – an area below the ground surface but above the water table – where a soil vapor extraction system

Dress for success Bellmore’s Brett Cohen has put himself and his hometown on the map with his prank on passersby in Times Square some weeks ago. At first, the YouTube video shows him hanging around the same area in a T-shirt. Then you see him emerge from a building with a button-down shirt, greased hair, sunglasses and most importantly, an entourage of bodyguards and camera men. Suddenly, everybody thinks he must be famous. The main message of the video is how easy it is to fool people. But the flip side is how important it is to dress for success. Because so many famous or rich people dress casually these days, young people may get the idea that they can too. And that can hurt them in their efforts to impress possible employers. Just as sports teams have uniforms, many places of employment do too, whether it is white shirt and tie or business casual. Even business casual requires certain brands and styles. Always, good grooming and cleanliness are important. When you dress for success you will be amazed what can happen.

Happy New Year Next week, our Jewish readers will be observing the New Year, often walking to temple for services. This is a time of celebration, of rededication, of gathering with family and friends. We wish all a very Happy New Year, and we thank our local temple members and spiritual leaders for all they do to make our community a better place in which to live.

from page 3 and officers are now being housed in $300,000 trailers. In addition, the Seventh Precinct only has one holding cell, with a maximum capacity of four. “The First Precinct ranks first in arrests in the county,” said Mr. Denenberg, claiming that it was irresponsible for County Executive Mangano to cut the number of precincts in half. Legislator Denenberg criticized Mr. Mangano for continuing to reduce the county’s police force from 2,700 to “twenty-three-and change” over the past three years, which he said jeopardizes public safety despite a documented increase in violent crime. Mr. Denenberg also condemned the county executive for his elimination of special patrols such as Problem-Oriented Police, Heroin Taskforce, Anti-Gang Unit, DWI, plainclothes and traffic enforcement. “These officers are here to do the best they can for you,” Mr. Denenberg pointed out. Sergeant Barrett presented summer crime statistics regarding burglaries and auto larcenies. In the First Precinct, north

of Sunrise Highway, 11 auto thefts and five burglaries were reported in the Merrick area alone. Of the 11 auto thefts, eight vehicles were unsecured – unlocked, with open windows or with keys in the ignition – and three vehicles were broken into. Sergeant Barrett commented that the eight unsecured vehicles was “unacceptable.” In the Seventh Precinct, south of sunrise, there were 14 burglaries and 25 auto larcenies this summer (of the 25, six were in Merrick, eight in Bellmore and 11 in Wantagh). It was reported that the eastern part of Nassau County has seen an uptick in burglaries due to drug users needing fast cash. Several of the burglaries have also been “inside jobs” by day laborers working in unoccupied homes. Sergeant O’Mara advised the audience to take appropriate actions to avoid burglaries, such as removing window air conditioning units, which can be pushed in to gain entry into the house; locking sliding glass doors; and asking your neighbors to keep an eye on your house. If you are going to the gym, he said, be

Nassau County as “creeping Queensism.” Sergeant Fried agreed that in his 35 years living in Nassau County, he’s seen a tremendous change: more cars registered, properties sold and subdivided, and every piece of vacant land developed. “It’s a changing world, and one good thing can bring about two bad things,” he said. Sergeant Fried blamed many of today’s problems on young people who have no self-respect. “If you have no self-respect, you can’t respect your neighbors,” he asserted. Tom Carroll of North Merrick complained he could not back out of his driveway due to vehicles not making full stops at signs on Old Mill Road. He also noted that trash was being thrown out of cars onto the street. A of Merrick resident griped about speeding on weekends on Kenny Avenue between Merrick Road and Sunrise Highway. One resident’s complaints centered around the loud noise from motorcycles. Another, who lives in South Merrick, complained about people parking cars at night and urinating in public at the Town of Hempstead fishing pier at the end of Merrick Avenue. He claimed that it was useless to call police; the sergeants present responded that their job was to prioritize 911 calls. Claudia Borecky, the president of the North and Central Merrick Civic Association, and William Pezzulo, president of the board of trustees of the North Merrick Public Library, both commented on the need for a better police presence at school crossings on Merrick Avenue. In April of this year, a crossing guard was hit by a car near Old Mill Road School on Merrick Avenue at Old Mill Road. “When you guys sit there in a car wearing a uniform, this will stop,” said Mr. Pezzulo, whose own child was hit by a car on her way to school. “We will take this to the inspector. This stuff can’t go on anymore.” Sergeant Barrett said he would send a directive to watch for traffic violations near the Merrick schools. A representative from Legislator Denenberg’s office brought up the point that some issues are town matters, rather than 911 matters. The Town of Hempstead has its own code of enforcement division, so if, for example, you have a complaint about bright lights, you should call the Town of Hempstead’s Buildings Department. The Town of Hempstead’s main phone number is 489-5000. Jessica Tauber, also representing Legislator Denenberg, assured the audience that they could always call Mr. Denenberg’s office, and the legislator would make complaint phone calls on their behalf, to avoid any hassle. Legislator Denenberg’s district office phone number is 409-8524, and his legislative office phone number is 571-6219. In the end, the point was raised that even though they have plenty of complaints, people are hesitant to call 911 for fear of bothering the police. “You’re doing yourself a disservice by not calling 911,” said Sergeant Fried. Sergeant O’Mara agreed, “We need more people to call 911.” Residents were warned against trying to handle unlawful situations themselves. Instead, they should call the police, who have the expertise to get the job done. “You should always call 911 if you need us,” said Sergeant Barrett. “You have an accident and you need an accident number? That’s when you go to the stationhouse.”

Questions we've been asked... My mother may soon be applying for Medicaid. How does this affect funeral arrangements?

Merrick Cinemas Sponsored by:

60SP1205LR

The most recent Medicaid regulations now permit individuals to set aside a portion of their assets in an irrevocable trust account in order to have funds for future funeral expenses. The process is reasonably simple, and no doubt the most difficult aspect of it is the recognition that you need to begin making anticipated funeral arrangements for someone near and dear to you.

• A family will make an appointment with us to discuss what kind of funeral arrangements will be preferred. • We discuss options and record their wishes. The discussion covers not only the funeral home services but cemetery, church, monument inscription, newspaper notices, etc. We inform the family of exactly what those costs are at the present time. • Those funds can then be deposited in our FDIC insured PRE-PLAN Trust. This Trust pays sufficient interest to allow us to guarantee the funeral home costs which can be expected to be higher in the future because of inflation. • While the funds remain in the name of the individual who will be receiving assistance from Medicaid they are not considered an asset which otherwise would affect Medicaid eligibility.

We Deliver • Open 7 Days

If we can help you with this important matter, call us and our knowledgeable staff will answer your questions. Moreover, there is no cost or fee involved in establishing a PRE-PLAN Trust. 14SP1205LR

TOH hosts 9-11 Memorial Service Thousands of Nassau County residents gathered on the sands of Point Lookout Beach for a sunrise 9-11 memorial service on Tuesday. This was the same spot where residents looked to the west in the wake of the terrorist attacks that fateful day, 11years ago. The memorial service, sponsored by the Town of Hempstead, is Long

Island’s largest 9-11 ceremony. After a somber, yet uplifting one hour service, residents were invited to write the names of loved ones who were killed at the World Trade Center on the “Heroes of 9-11” panorama. Attendees were also encouraged to write personal messages on the tags attached to small Americans flags, handed out at the ceremony and placed at the base of Hempstead Town’s Twin Towers replica. Finally residents caste white carnations in a reflecting pool under the World Trade Center beam, a poignant reminder of what was lost. “I am proud to stand with the families of the victims of 9/11, reverend clergy, firefighters and our patriotic residents as we continue to forge links in our unbreakable chain of love, eleven years later,” said Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray.
